But then again, using this as a DD it's kind of expected. I just wish I could go more than 5 days without having to go back to the gas station
The reviewer was unprepared but I can tell his sincerity doing it. I have a 2008 3SS and I love owning it more than any other vehicles I've owned (which is a lot). Got mine in 2016 with only 73K on it and I have ZERO intentions of selling it. It's the type of vehicle you get a ton of looks in, great conversation starter and the LS2 under the hood is still on par with anything they make today. I also run 7 quarts and the extended filter to avoid the oil starvation issue (however, if you're not pounding on it all the time that oiling "issue" is non issue). If you haven't out Kook's headers on yet, you're literally leaving about 40 horsepower caged up in the block. Single best upgrade you can do without changing the internals or adding boost.
How's yours doing? I had an 05 C6 with intake, exhaust and headers with a tune about 10 years ago and I'm now looking at these. I tend to see a lot for sale with rebuilds or swaps but from what I've experienced and seen the LS2 is pretty reliable and will go for many miles. Is yours AWD or 2WD? I always wanted the AWD but am now leaning more towards 2WD. It also seems like the transmissions in these don't last too long.
Wow! This used to be my TBSS! Still looks great (I know this vid was a year ago). I assume its still here in San Diego. Had it shipped out from Michigan and owned it from 2009 to 2014. Still really miss it! Went to a cool guy though and the funds helped us finally get the house we wanted. Great review vid. It is a really fun truck! Watch those pot holes though!! :)
They are actually discontinued Forte F11 "Smooth" wheels 22"x9.5". The ones on this truck were sold by another wheel brand (Paradyme). They took the Forte F11 and powder coated it with that custom silver over black color. They are nearly impossible to find now. Here is an example of someone who had a set: www.tbssowners.com/forums/tbss-parts/56614-gi-paradyme-20x9-wheels.html www.wayneswheels.net/images/f/forte_f11_smooth.jpg
That is actually factory Chevy Blue. Most TBSS' were black, silver, or "red". Blue was an option, but not as common. The headlights were tinted with HID's and a black bowtie and SS badges were added. JDM drop spindles and muffler delete. I still really miss that truck!
I've owned mine since 08, new off lot...one thing to mention is they come with 4.11 rear gearing stock. Pulls extremely hard. Only thing to really take care of is trans...4L70e can be a weak point and run 7 quarts oil to keep from oil starvation at wot from stop. Oil pan is front pickup no baffle.
It’s a wonderful truck I got a 06 and had some mods added to mine fine tuned it flowmaster exhaust and a bigger air intake mines get just about 420 horses and it’s rear wheel drive. A beast coming down the road.
If you must have one of these set aside some money for a rpm level 5 trans or better. And when (not If) the trans blows take that as an opportunity to add a stall converter. A stall 2800 converter really wakes these trucks up without sacrificing street-ability.If you get the rwd version the trans may hold up better but, the combination of weight and horsepower tends to spell doom for the inadequate transmissions in these trucks. Also get baffles for the oil pan so the oil doesn't slosh away from the pickup tube under hard acceleration. There are also pickup tube relocation kits that address these problems. If you cant afford that just add a extra half quart of oil to the engine.
I know the feeling that he is talking about, I have always wanted one. And now I own a blue 2008 TB'SS with a lot of mod's, and you can't keep your foot from going all the way to the floor lol. Every day I have those Mopar guy's wanting to race my SUV.
Love the review Brother! My Sister and Brother in Law Live in NC! I bought a 93 Typhoon there and drove it back to Seattle 2800 Miles. Got a 07 TBSS a few months later and Oh Man I feel like I'm on the Moon. That SS is so Luxurious. Nicest Truck I ever owned.
00:43 Yea I remember 2009 the gas prices were way up but now it's better. Some how the 2006-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee Srt8 with 420 horsepower did well with their sales. Now the performance SUV market is becoming more popular. The Jaguar F-Pace, Maserati Levante, Bentley Bentayga not to mention the BMW X5-M and X6-M, the Porsche Cayenne and Macan Turbo, Range Rover Sport, and all AMG versions of Mercedes Benz SUV lineup.
I have both the 06 trailblazer SS and the 07 SRT8 Jeep grand cherokee and the srt8 takes off a lot faster from a stand still but I'd say they are both about equal in passing gear.
James Zamora I wouldn’t say it’s a weak point as it’s beefed up to handle the power, but it could definitely use an extra gear or two. The SRT8 definitely has a gearing advantage with the 5 speed and it helps that first in the NAG1 transmission is fairly short as well.
I purchased a new TBSS back in 2007, fully loaded - it was my fav vehicle I've ever owned - but the transmission wasn't so great. Owned a new 2008 as well because my '07 was stolen.
6.0L motor. City I got around 230 miles. Road trip was around 330. Not the best milage. But so fun to drive. Mine was AWD. Blew a lot of cars off the stop lights. Most people don't know about how quick this truck is. Good times ahead.
Most of the TBSS forums will say these have two big flaws, the oil pan design (oil starvation) and the 4l70e trans. You can fix the oil pan issue by swapping to a corvette C6 pan if 2wd or by getting the oil pickup tube kit for awd. Lots of these trucks have the trans go out as most say its too much weight and power for the 4l70e. Mine has no issues at 150k miles now and I still have the stock tranny and mine doesnt have the oil pickup tube kit. Other than a good general inspection, I would mainly be concerned with how the tranny feels when you drive it. If its solid, go for it. Its been very fun, comfortable and reliable for me thus far. Oh and heads up, the interior lights suck on these. Some of the bulbs were pretty dim on the dash and HVAC controls which seems to be common. I sent my whole interior out and had led's installed so that isnt an issue anymore.
Like Krysco51 said, tranny and oil issue. I added the pickup tube and baffles to my oil pan and upgraded the transmission to an RPM level V at 150k miles, the engine is stock and smooth as butter still. daily driver. great truck.
I got this truck last year around this time still have it I got the 2009 just put a k&n air intake on it trucks so fun for the price of them can’t beat them only thing u beating is the transmission lol
