Playing “solo”, without accompaniment. Let me show you how to do it!

  • Hi folks. I’m often asked for hints and tips on playing completely “solo”, without accompaniment. This is a hugely rewarding way to play, especially if you can reference the chords that would normally be shifting around behind you.
    You don’t need Theory as such. And you don’t need to understand all the big words that some music teachers throw around. If your ear tells you that some chords go together nicely (and that some don’t), then bingo, we’re on! Remember, many of our guitar heroes were young dudes who simply had good ears and talent. I do not think Clapton and Hendrix were thinking about modes and harmony concepts.....
    I believe it all starts with a general grasp of the cowboy chords, plus knowing where to throw in a diminished and / or an augmented. Then let your ears and creativity lead you. Granted, you still need 10k hours of practice but hey, no one said this was gonna be easy 🤣

    Mickey Baker, I remember that book, I had it in the 1980's and it transformed my chord vocabulary out of recognition, I am coming up to 63 so only a bit younger than Mr Ford (he is way more accomplished as a guitar man of course). Just one suggestion to learning chord for anyone, break it down to triads, learn major, minor, augmented diminished like paul said, then learn dominant triad, major 7th and minor 7th triads and you are good for a while, then build chord on four strings, that is good for extended chords, then you can learn other drop chords. When you got that use them in real life, use the major scale and see the realtionship between chords, use secondary dominants for more smoother transition to any chord, borrow chords from parralel key and explore, make ii - V movement to any chord, use tritone substitution ... a lot to explore :)

    • @tonyboyhume3878

    15:47 is A9#5 (Is used as an altered V chord, so can replace A7. Works well as a secondary dominant, going to D7 for example.)
    Note: It could also be treated as a G7b5, (that would lead nicely to F# m9).

    Reminds me of something I was doing by accident, but then looked into it a bit more. It started with basic major triad, then I lowered the bottom note a tone, to get a Dom7 inversion. Then from that triad, I was effectively moving the top note over an 7 semitone range (+/- 3) of alternative triads, but I was actually keeping the top note static and moving the lower 2 notes over that +/- 3 semitone range. It's a good exercise for finger swapping when you pass from + to /-. It also works, to some extent, with other triads, just keep 1 note static and try moving the other 2, keeping their relative fretboard position, through a +/- 3 semitone range. Keep the ones that sound useful and modify the ones which get too discordant.

    You know Paul I did a lot of theory before. Because of other arts I have to know everything I'm doing and why. But like you said you get rid of 90% of it Confusing part was every style uses a little different and I'm mostly depends on the rhythmic section dictates the style and then scales . the same names but in different places so that part was confusing at start. And there's a point where if you lose your flow and your feel it doesn't matter what you know so you have to realize that. And that's everything to me. But whenever trying to reach for new sounds you always go through that stage as you know But then I also knows they're simplicity how someone who don't know music listens what moves them and what moves me and what I was attracted to. And the correct mix to give it more tension and Dynamics which the more tension I like it so I do pretty much what you do. But my final verdict in music got to be I like chords and all rhythmic stuff and everything follows it. At this point . Awesome Paul great job is always. As always dig deep within that where true style is. Say like an old-timer who had nobody to listen to except his feelings and soul

    Great lesson once again Paul, thanks a million for these :-) Funny you should mention Robben Ford's video about that ugly Telecaster. I watched that some months ago and stole from it exactly the same things you seemed to do. I see them as passing chords, or chords that lead into the next chord. It's super to take the notes from those chords and improvise over them on your way to the 4 or 5 chord or back to the 1 chord. And I actually attended a Guitar Clinique with him in Cologne around 2008 and have had that Mickey Baker book since then. Actually it's right next to me here on my desk :-D

    Yet, another great lesson! Always a pleasure hearing you play, Paul! I like that you're focusing on chords because in my opinion, chords are the foundation of music. Quick question, since you started doing these lessons, does it help you understand your playing a little better? I'm gonna start practicing those Harmonized Major 7th runs, for sure! Thanks Paul, stay safe!

      Hi Krenar, thanks man. Yeah, I’d say teaching guitar definitely forces you to look at what you’re doing. It’s quite a weird thing for someone like me, because I’ve never really felt the need to understand what I was doing. I’ve never placed importance on theory and I rely heavily on my ears, my creativity and copying others 🤣. As regards those harmonized 7th arpeggios..... here’s a link to a video, where the player demonstrates them a heck of a lot better than me.

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Chief Brody 👍. As regards your question, no, the saddles are just the normal 3 uncompensated brass saddles that are true to the 50’s design. I’ve always found them perfectly fine for my style of playing. However my Dad plays less lead but way more chords .... consequently he prefers a movable saddle per string.

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  3 года назад

      Ah, I’ve never actually googled “cowboy chords” before. So apologies. What I meant by cowboy chords is “basic” chords (A, B flat, B, C etc etc) and NOT any fancy stuff like major 7th, 13ths, flattened 5ths, augmented, diminished etc). Hope that helps. 😁

      @simonbilleng2748 3 года назад

      @@paulstaffordcook8799 thanks for answering! Thats what I thought you meant, I think I need to bookmark this and revisit after I learn diminished and augmented patterns.
      Although, I do think that even after I learn that - what I still would love for you to talk about a bit more is the licks and lead lines between the chords. This was very heavy on the chord sequences, and yes You can do basicallt whatever inbetween with your lead and then land on the chord notes , and strum that chord, but a video of you sharing your lick library or your ”lead habits” would be very interesting to see :)

    • @paulstaffordcook8799
      @paulstaffordcook8799  3 года назад

      Yes, fair point. A catch all video might be useful, maybe entitled “lick library”. However, I’ve covered much of this in previous videos, albeit scattered over the years. The best way to see a players habits and approaches is just to listen and watch them for months / years. After a while you start to recognize little signatures. But as a summary, I basically play in two scales - the minor blues pentatonic (like we all know) and the major scale (doh, rae, me, etc). And to those scales I add things as the mood strikes, like passing notes, diminished runs, augmented runs, the “half step whole step” scale, plus a whole bunch of techniques to spice everything up. On a related note, my next video (coming out over the next few days) might be helpful to you - it’s much more based around “learn these actual licks”. Hope it helps 👍
