Touring and playing the world over for over 55 years such a wonderful feeling to continue learning : ). You're a kindred soul my brother beside being a gifted soulful player ! Bless your soul !
Ah, what a lovely compliment Bubba. Thanks mate 🙏
Just end up laughing about how good this is - many thanks Paul
Paul, I love how you don't do the typical guitar instructional lesson but take us on a journey with you to places where we get to imagine all the possibilities. Thanks🙏
Ah, cheers P D, I appreciate that. 👍
Jesus, what a joy you are to watch, the fact that I am actually learning something at the same time is almost inconsequential, long may you continue.
😎🎙🎸✅
Thank you Julian, delighted to read such a compliment 😊
I’m absolutely in love with this series!! I’ve been really enjoying and finding the exercises useful. Thank you very much!!
Well thank you Kenny, I’m delighted players are enjoying my wee videos 😊👍
There's something about the music you play, and how you play your guitars, that inspires and fills me with so much positivity and incentive to play my own guitars; Thank you so much for your intuitive approach to playing music on the guitar.
What a lovely compliment, thank you altadena57. 😊👍
Just beautiful! The voicing, melody and listening to your descriptions coerces me to play!
Thank you 63Spatch. Yes, go get that Geetar 🤣
A truly honest musician with a beautiful natural feel, Thank you🙏🎶🏴
Thank you Stephen, what a lovely compliment! Cheers
Your series of tricks in various keys with open strings is like manna from guitar heaven. For me you have shown techniques and their explanations that I had not been taught or have learned. I agree with some others that key of B would be awesome as well. As always - thank you very much for sharing your skills and knowledge! Cheers - Bob
Thank you Bob, I’m delighted to read such nice comments 👍
You are amazing! You should have 100k subscriptions. I'll be watching!
This is the first "Tricks of the Trade" episode I've watched, excellent, simply excellent. Time to go seek out the other keys. These episodes remind me of what Ford Thurston used to put out. What ever happened to Ford? He just disappeared. Bummer, that dude can flat out play,
Thanks man, delighted you like this vid. Hopefully you’ll like the others in the series. 👍
That old Les Paul Junior is killing me. Mr Cook's guitars are to die for. Love the Celtic flavors. I have found a source for years of satisfying music for me and my friends
i always come by to spend a second seeing what you're up to...and end up watching the whole video twice through. always a joy to see where you end up!
Ah, thank you Kevin 👍
Beautiful music. Easily one of the most valuable video’s on RUclips. Thank you for this. Great teaching and tips.
What a lovely comment, thank you Dave! 🙏
Love to see your creative approach and beautiful melodies that always surprise and delight! Thanks especially for breaking down some of your Key-of-E trick bag licks...lot's of noodling potential there! 😀
Delighted you liked it Gordon. And if you are the same Gordon Lee who kindly put something in my PayPal tip jar, then thank you, that is appreciated 😊👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Yup, happy to throw some fun money your way every now and again--really enjoying your channel and getting some inspiration & ideas on breaking out of cliches!
Fantastic...I play something similar that I've been messing around with....but you've opened up some very cool ideas that I can use to expand what I'm already doing...i love moody melancholic chords...I stole most of mine from listening to Johnny Marr of the smiths...but this lesson out jangles even him....thanks for sharing your idea's ...I cannot watch one of your videos without wanting to pick up my guitar..I know as far as I'm aware you haven't mentioned him as an influence...but .I'm hearing a lot of Richard Thompson in your playing I think its the celtic thing...if you haven't listened to him I reckon you would love his stuff...I cannot recommend one album of his in particular as like Mark knopler Richard Thompson hasn't really ever done a bad album ever....he rarely gets mentioned when ever list of great players but I think he is one of Britain's greatest song writers and guitar players ...OK I'll recommend listening on you tube to live versions of shoot out the lights....or maybe calvery cross...or...Wall of death...
Thank you Paul. Actually, yes I LOVE Richard Thompson! He did the film score for Grizzly Man - absolutely haunting guitar work! Such a talent 🙏
"E is blessed." Paul, you're a gem!
Cheers Owen 😊
I just got out of hospital to see this video available....you always make me smile... you bring a healing factor to the people with what you do...God uses you in unique ways to touch souls for the better...and I for one thank you sir...as I lay home healing.🙏
Wow, what a lovely comment Joe. Genuinely delighted to read such nice words. And I agree with what you say. I wish you a speedy recovery Joe. Rest up and allow time to do what it does. 😊
What world were we just visiting again? That is so beautiful, Paul.
Tons of inspiration here. Also - explanations I can understand! Many thanks indeed!
As expected... and always delivered ... great licks to work with
Thank you Paul
Thanks Lance 👍
Fabulous video the key of E is my favorite key ....new tricks to learn here!
Thanks man 😊
So excellent Paul, thank you.
These little tricks of the trade, they really do take a bit of detective work to reverse engineer what you've done free playing while inspired.
I've been playing since 1974 and find myself in the same position explaining everything I do to my guitar playing Son.
Again, thank you Sir.
Thank you HK Guitar, appreciated 👍
You crack me up! How good would you be if you knew what you were doing?? Paul the sound you get is stunning! Studio's would be proud of that sound! ☺☺ Oh look at the happy subscriber jump! 😎
Thank you so much Brian 🙏
Oh my Lordy. What a wonderful player you are. This is a great lesson. Thanks.
Thank you StolenSon! Appreciated mate 👍
"Remember you can slow RUclips down." Lol. I will definitely have to do that if I want to learn all the wonderful stuff you're sharing. But even if I wouldn't, it's still a joy to watch and hear you playing. Thank you.
Thanks from Kingston, WA. Refreshing and creative.
Thank you James, glad you liked it. Greetings to you in Kingston, from way over here in Edinburgh Scotland 👋
Yes, such beautiful playing, and tone, Paul. That guitar!
By the way Chuck, on a different note - you and I recently talked about the Dumble you bought in the 80’s. So I’m sitting in a hotel bar, idly thumbing through this month’s Guitarist magazine - and there’s a photo of your exact Dumble! They even quote the serial number!
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Wow, what a coincidence that is. I was going to mention that article to you. That was right after Mick Taylor did the RUclips video.I have a copy of that magazine here. My amp also appeared in Vintage Guitar a few years earlier. I ended up selling the amp to a shop in London. The guy said that it was for him, but I had my doubts about that. The shop ended up being a “middle man” for the amp, as it went to someone else. The guy would not tell me who actually owns the amp now. I wish that I knew. Is there a way for us to communicate by our personal emails? Wait a second, this is a recent issue of Guitarist? I would love to see what that’s about. Mine (funny I still call it my amp) was serial #128, delivered in December, 1986, after a 5 month wait. I still have a Christmas card or two from Dumble. I’d like to be able to email you directly. The amp was featured in Guitarist Magazine Issue #416, February 2017. I thought you were referring to this issue. I would just love to know who owns it currently. Why was it in the Guitarist that you saw? Thank you, very interesting, the saga continues.
@@chuckmatses6803 Hi Chuck. Yes, if you email me at paul_ursusarctos@hotmail.co.uk (these contact details are also on my RUclips’s “About” page), then I will send you photo is of the article. It’s the most up to date “Guitarist” magazine and is Issue 483 👍
Not at all surprised with the Celtic tones in E. I think Em, B, and Bm would all play nicely together in that band.👌
They may seem a bit out of sorts, but the rub brings them all together.🙂
You said one of the most important things here, "It doesn't matter if you don't know what it is when you are playing in the moment because you can work it out later, as long as it sounds good." So true. The flow of the moment is how timeless music is made. Every band interview has at least one story of how they were just jamming and a particular lick just sent them down a road that turned into a favorite tune. The only time we really need to be specific is while playing/recording with people who are not familiar with what we're doing.
I'm sure you and your band mates started jamming and someone says, what is that, and off you all go.
Always my favorite part of playing.
Thanks for sharing. Lovely set of chords and approach. Cheers!
Thank you Simon
Paul you have extraordinary dexterity, and inventiveness to match!!! Thank you so much for putting this on RUclips!!!🧡😀☮
🙏
Thank you Jeffrey, delighted to read such nice comments 😊
I’m loving your little lessons. So easy to learn from cheers mate keep them coming 👍🏼
Thank you Matthew 👍
That is so beautiful. So special. Thank you.
You are SO APPRECIATED for doing this.! Thank YOU Paul Stafford Cook. WOW.
What a wonderful lover the guitar is, endless exploration of pleasure and discovery of self.
Your videos are just absolutley awesome! Im so glad i stumbled upon them.
Thank you TheKingKrusher 👍. Appreciated mate
Hi Paul, I've really enjoyed these Tricks of the trade in.... videos. I've been playing for 35 years and I'm still learning cool stuff! Thanks so much for your wonderfully informal teaching style. Go on, do one in the key of B, you know you want to!! 🎸👍
Well thank you Rik, delighted you like my little mini series 😊👍
Excellent. Thanks, I’ll put it to the test. You’re a very good player as well as informative 👍
Thank you Richard! Appreciated 👍
Paul, very inspirational lessons! Thank you!
My pleasure PE1978C. Cheers 🥂 🍻
Hi Paul, it's really an epiphany to see your explanation on how you outline the chords. I guess I'm already doing it to some extent, but I am not always aware of what I'm doing there. It is a low hanging fruit that is so useful to have in ones toolbox. Thanks for shedding some light on it. Always a pleasure to listen to you play and talk. Cheers, Thor
Hi Thor, and thanks for that lovely comment! And stay tuned, because guess what just arrived today from Holland…. My Oswald Stratocaster! It’s fabulous, I’m totally smitten! So I’ll try and get a review of it up on RUclips at the weekend 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Awesome, been waiting for that, and I guess I'm not the only one exited to see and hear all about it! I'll be up in the Norwegian woods in a small cabin this weekend with a couple of guitar playing friends. I might be able to do a video recording, 'cause one of them wants to use the opportunity to start using effect pedals. So maybe a "pedal for dummies" episode is coming up 😀 Cheers, can't wait to see your next upload here. Thor
Oh Thor, I’m jealous! That’s right up my street! I’m a big outdoors fan, camping, wildlife, cabins, peace and quiet…. Love it. Have a great weekend, and I’ll be hoping you DO upload the episode you’re thinking about. 👍
Man, you are so talented. I can't get over the melody you play. WOW!!! I'm def going through all of your video's. Thanks for sharing, Brother.
Thank you so much Roger, appreciated 😊
I'm glad the RUclips algorithm suggested this video. They know from 80 % of what I watch is guitar related 😂 You play beautifully and I love your humility and your accent is pleasing to the ear as well! I play alone mainly with the E often droning as with Voodoo Chile etc.. I love your clean tone on that beautiful little special, I'll be back for sure man! I'm trying to rededicate myself to the instrument after a long hiatus! Blues is right up my alley so I'll benefit greatly watching your channel I'm sure. Can't hurt can it? 😂 ☮️🎸🎶🎵🎼🙏
Thank you Stan, I wish you well in your return to the instrument! And I’m delighted you like my playing. Cheers mate 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Thanks for the well wishes Paul!! Yeah, I bought a Squier Affinity SSS and Fender Mustang LT25 modeling amp for my birthday last year and although I've had a back surgery and I'm probably going to be playing sitting for quite a while, I'll still be playing right? So I'm subscribing to your channel. I love you're playing, but it's not just that.
I like you're enthusiasm for the instrument and you're personality. You've got a great humility about you, a sign of good character. Plus I love you're speaking voice. You're accent is pleasant and you just seem cool.
Don't we all kinds divide people into 2 groups. Those who are cool and those who aren't? Right? So yeah, I like your style mate, cheers to you and I'll be seeing you. You'll probably see my comments. I'm recovering in a nursing home in Miami and everyone around me speaks Spanish. I speak very little so I love to hear the English language and I feel compelled to communicate with people who can understand or even appreciate whatever happens to pass through my mind at any given time.
Thanks for responding too , Tomo Fujita and Marty Schwartz are about the only other 2 who bother with that courtesy.
Don't get me wrong, Beato, Tyler Larson, Rob Baker, Paul Davids, and you know, the RUclips guitar community can all be helpful but I always get responses from Tomo. Marty Schwartz sometimes but alot of other guys are too busy. Either that or they don't think much about what I have to say 😂🤣
I'm mostly kidding and I'm pretty thick skinned anyway...I don't get offended easily.
So yeah, cheers and I'm gonna' hit subscribe and turn on all notifications and we'll see if I can learn some theory. I'm one of those who's not only had to quit playing for years but on my best day I could only jam in minor pentatonic 😂 Typical I know but I'm working hard on understanding the instrument.
Ok, enough outta me, thanks again for being cool enough to reply.
P.S. I don't know ANYTHING about you. I read that you toured for many years or something like that. It's possible I know you but just don't know where I should know you from?
In any case, I'm going to subscribe now before I get interrupted and forget 😂 I'll see ya mate! 🎸🎶🎵✌️❤️🙏
Thanks Stan, it sounds like you’ve been through a bit of an ordeal with your back… I wish you the fastest recovery. Thank goodness guitar playing is something we can do sitting down 🤣.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Yeah, thanks goodness for being drawn to an instrument that not only allows one to play seated, that's essential in my case. But drummers! They sit but they have to be athletes right? Contort their bodies in a way that would riddle me with pain.
So that thing that always mystified me about the guitar as a kid. Or that thing that drummers feel calling them that didn't speak to me as loudly. I never knew there'd come a day where I'd be unable to stand strapped into a 6 # instrument but I really am glad I didn't feel drawn (or coordinated enough 😂) to REALLY be a drummer.
So it all worked out pretty well I think. I'm super positive and rarely mention my health. Sometimes it just comes out but my intention is never to receive pity , not when I'm doing better than probably 98% of the worlds population.
Relatively speaking I'm extremely fortunate!
Plus, you can't pity a guy with a new and decent guitar and amp. I have this little Fender Mustang LT25 modeling amp with 30 preset effects that are all adjustable with the amount of gain, chorus, reverb, delay... little practice amp but I can't afford a bunch of peddles or a processor right now, so it's perfect for my purposes. It's got a simulated acoustic that's really close in tone as well. Oh , and I play a Fender Squier Affinity SSS right now... good instrument for that price range!
So I'm doing great!! I've been surprised by life often enough. It's not my prognosis to never walk again, just temporarily out of commission but I should be able in time.
Thanks mate, keep up the good work! You really have a unique style and I enjoy your playing as much as anything I've heard, sincerely right? You play beautifully, it makes me want to dig in and practice. I wish you nothing but the best life has to offer. Cheers man! 🎸✌️🎶❤️🙏
Wow, thank you Stan, your general attitude is amazing and has made me stop and think. I will consciously let some of your words pop back in to my head the next time I’m feeling hard done by. Cheers Stan
Paul, Jim Haubert here, you are absolutely brilliant, love this series, great road map you're laying out for us!!!!
Thank you Jim! Delighted you’re liking my wee videos 👍
Paul this is priceless! Please continue with this series. I am someone who started guitar late in life and now play Irish Trad... but always wanted to expand my repertoire into electric but with very limited success until I found your channel. The content is superb and your ability to teach in a practical and relevant way is very rare. For the sake of those of, us young and old, please keep on showing the way!!
Thank you so much Paul, comments like that make my heart swell with pride 😊
Lovely tone as always and explanations! Thanks :)
Thanks Clint
So good. I will now try and break all this down. Awesome
Thank you Rob
Dude! You make anyone watching want to pick it up and play... like right now! 🎸🎸🎸
It's magic stuff, Paul. Love it. Keep me busy for a while - minutes 12-13 should take care of 2022!
Thank you Ian, cheers 👍
Absolutely brilliant mate. Thanks so much.
My pleasure, cheers Mike 😊
Ditto to all of the above. I was only thinking yesterday that I hadn't seen you play your junior for a while, low and behold. Another truly inspirational session. Keep them coming.
Thanks Mike, yes that Junior is a real joy. 👍
Hi, Paul! Thank you for all those inspirational lessons! Your videos always make me want to pick up the guitar. Greetings from Brazil!
You're a wonderful teacher. Seen plenty of tutorials and you communicate what you're doing and why better than anyone really. A huge THANK YOU BROTHER!!
Cheers mate
Wow, thank you so much lolwithme36dd 🙏. What a lovely compliment, genuinely appreciated.
Lovely guitar! Once again, after a lifetime of noodling, I play similar stuff. But, as in your previous videos, I’ve learnt some new ideas….a different way to go. Many thanks 👍🍷
Thanks Emlyn
Paul, I've been watching you. Love what you do.
Man you have the talent and are a joy to watch. Like others have said, you make me want to pick up my guitar and learn new sounds. Thanks!
Thank you Dick, it’s a thrill to read comments as nice as yours, cheers mate. 👍
Brilliant Paul! Lovely chords. I met your dad a couple of months back dog walking, was amazing to chat to him after so many years. Very glad to see and hear you are doing fine. Beautiful playing! Inspired me to pick up the old guitar, of which I've been neglecting, and attempt to play along. I'm stealing some of those chords! (if I can work them out). All the best, David
Well I’m suspecting from “DsmW” and your comment that you might be David Watt? Well if I’m right, hello David! Lovely to see you pop up on my wee channel. My Dad did mention he met you while out walking - he said you were looking “well, fit and strong” (or something like that 🤣). I was actually thinking about you the other day….. I was camping up on the hill above the south shore of Loch Earn, and I remembered going away for a couple of days with your family to visit your Uncle? (Uncle Jake rings a bell). I seem to remember it was a farm up that way…. Anyway, if DsmW is NOT David Watt then you must think I’m a total loony, so apologies 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Yes its David. Ah the croft in Glen Ogle, that was a wee while back! My uncle Donald's croft. A ruin now unfortunately (for about 35 years..).
Hope you are fine and well Paul. Yer dad was looking strong and fit too!
These lessons are too cool. I’m sure someone’s done something like it before but with your style it feels brand new!
Was worried the junior was gonna be tough to tame when you first got it. Silly me! Sounds like it was built just for you now. Thanks as always 🙏
Thank you Padovann, yes that Junior is really unique, I’m so pleased to have it in my wee collection. Cheers Padovann, appreciated
So good Paul! I love this series so much. Please do that video on the Key of B!!
Thank you Josiah, delighted you like my wee series. 👍
Great stuff.... and damn I need a junior !!
This one of the best guitar series on RUclips!!! Love the Celtic vibes… I would love not to know what I’m doing like you!! Lol
🤣, thank you rcolang1. I’m genuinely delighted to be reading such lovely comments. 👍
Hi Paul ! Greetings from Akron , Ohio USA ! We all have our own music theory , If we didn't then we wouldn't be able to play . Sometimes it comes in different languages and signs from the heart and soul . Sometimes it a match of math , heart and muscle dexterity . Anyway I want to applaud you for tryng to un-code the unexpiainable . Cheers , and the Jr . sounds killer ! Love it !
Thank you Gangnam, glad you like the Junior! 🤘
Love the tones you are creating between your fingers and the p90
Thank you Jody, cheers 😊
There is so much here. Incredible lesson. I’m a fan!
Thank you JT Keel! Delighted you liked my wee vid 👍
Another gem of a guitar session. Thank you very much!

Love it when you break out the Jr. with the P-90's!

Almost reminds me of some of Guthrie Trapps stuff..
Very cool.

Ooooooffffttt you've done a stoater this time mate, didn't think you could do better than last time , you really brought all the vids in this series together for me, Just want to get on and learn some of those shapes how on earth are you going to top this one ? kidding :) although thats what your probably thinking, but you just keep doing what your doing cause your doing it right, thanks as always for posting, stay safe stay sane mate

My favorite "tuber" breaking down my favorite "steal" material; a lovely day indeed. Many thanks Paul. T'is also my wife's favorite tones from my morning musing on my homemade tele. Still, a long journey to reach your awesome ease and proficiency.
Ah, thank you Tim, delighted to read such a nice comment. Appreciated
Nice sounds-the steely dan chord would be E/A, so fret an open E but take your finger off the 5th string and use open A as the root
So refreshing to get back to basics in a video..( way too much pomp these days.)
Very nice Paul.
Thanks Bob 👍
the usual fantasticness
Ah, thank you Johnny!
Great series Paul - any plans to one in the key of H ? :)
I tried…. but I just can’t find the dam notes 🤣
You really need to be in a band/playing gigs. You're far too good to be keeping this talent to RUclips.
Thank you Richard 😊
Ah, a Gibson Les West.
Awesome
Love Vox amps.l play thru my Deluxe Reverb alot but l always go back to the Vox .Whats your favorite amp?(your Supro sounds great also) Sounding great
Actually, you mention your Deluxe Reverb….. Whilst my favourite amp (that I own) is my beloved Cornell Romany 12, I do think I could live happily ever after with a Deluxe Reverb!
Saturday Paul fever 🎸😎!!!!
🤣, love it. Cheers Belo
Fantastic mate. Hope I can pinch these progressions :))
Thanks W Boynton
Outstanding
Thank you Colin 👍
Gonna nick those 2 chords at the 6 minute mark. Will make a great intro to a song!!😆
Cheers Ian, be my guest 😊
Beautiful Paul, whens the new stratocaster coming?
Kevin
Thank you Kevin. And to answer your question….. It arrived TODAY, 4hrs ago. It’s stunning, and it’s genuinely surpassed my expectations in how it sounds and plays! I’m over the moon! So I will try and get a wee review of it up on RUclips this weekend 👍
Cheers Paul
Hi Paul, beautiful cords, thanks...what a string gage are you using? 11-52?
Hi Manuel. They’re 11-49. I tend to like 11s on Gibsons and 10s on Fenders 😊
