i have a 2005 vw passat....and i take pride in it and the fact its made in germany...make me feel safe and makes me look at the car as reliable.....like wtf why would u build one in amerca...thats like the new jettas....made in mexico....you are ruining volkswagen.....mark my words if this continues inthe next 5 years volkwagens gunna fall off the map no ones gunna buy it anymore itll be just another amercan bs car company
VW is not stupid. They must have done their Due Diligence and they must have found that North Americans want non-descript sedans. And they have succedeed with this very nice, bland, non-risqué model. Personally I am more a CC guy or a 2011 Sonata guy. Now those are beautiful models that stand out from the other sedans out there. But maybe I'm just a guy that likes to stand out lollll!
@DASVWPOS I guess by your comments you don't read motor trend or car and driver!!! this car is so much better than the 2010 passat or any other year!!! Mexico is mexico if you don't want to buy the beetle or the jetta because they are made in mexico then buy the american made german engineered passat its quality is better than any of the compettitors and if u sat in one or drove one you would say its not a step back its a jump forward!!!
@USA4July1776 what pedigree and reputation are you referring to? and alienating what customer base? the customer base from 2000 and up? because if you don't know, volkswagen literally means "the people's car". the beetle, remember that? that's volkswagen. if you want an audi, buy a fucking audi and shut up. volkswagen was cannabalizing their own sales by making the jetta a 30 grand car... that's absurd... this is volkswagen we're talking about here. they wisened up.
I Love VW, but everytime I see this car nothings says Volkswagen. I see camry, accord, Avalon, impala, and 3 series from behind. Nothing about this car has the class or elegance of it's successors! The 2002-2010 models are the best year Passat, VW has ever made. Cram the technology they have in this one into the body deserving to bear the VW badge and they'll have themselves a winner. I hope they come to realize this..very soon!! It's the American car buyers fault for not demanding better desi
It looks just as cheap as the new Jetta. First they tried to go upscale with the brand and you ended up with a Passat that cost more than a BMW or Mercedes. Now they are going the other way. I don't think this will work out either. VWs have terrible reliability as it is, so making them cheaper at a brand new plant ought to be interesting. I've owned 6 VWs and each one was LESS reliable than the one before it. I decided in 1999 enough was enough and bought a 4 year old Mercedes instead.
Is this the new camry? i have owned every jetta since the mk2. my mkV will be my last vw. what have they done with the "drivers wanted" mantra? wow. i don't think americans will buy this when they can by a kia optima that is better looking, get's better mileage, is more reliable, and costs less when optioned out. then there are the lame cars from japan that look almost just like this piece of shiz. it's like they hired japanese designers! what were they thinking!
Nice profile, but the front end is bland and mistakable for other makes... I find also that it is a serious marketing error to call this model a Passat. It seems to me that the design team and the marketing team drink from the same fountain of creativity... and it's barely trickling out any kind of refreshment like a concrete fountain in a NYC public park.
guys you have to keep in mind that this version for N America it is difrent then for europe it it not as "fancy" as Europe model if i may say so it requiers less atention on details ,interior mostly after all it is a difrent market pepole in NA requiers difrent option it has to compete with a nord american companies not with europeans ones
I dont understand why so many are complaining about this car being "bland"...most VWs are...I too believe its classic german engineering. Understated, pure, and functional... purchased for its build quality, reputation, and attention to detail. I believe its designed to be a little more upscale/classy without having to move up to the Audi line. I cant wait for the tdi version!
@brbr28 nah bra. people buy those bland cars for one reason. reliable transportation. everyone knows vws are "tempermental". you buy a vw because you like to drive. if you wanted a point a to point b ride, you'd get an accord or camry... or nowadays a fusion. VW has shot themselves in the foot with this thing. not quite teutonic. not quite japanese.
Although I really like the new passat, to say its $20,000 is a little misleading...you wont get much for that price...the fine print at the end of the darth vader super bowl commercial shows an exspected MSRP of just under $33,000 for the VR6 car shown in the ad.
@nilcra do you think this means North Americans are more likely to use the hand brake in spirited driving like taking a hairpin rally-style to bring the rear around? Electric I would imagine would be either on or off - not allowing much wheel roll when applied.
manufactured in Mexico is to the Jetta has always been low quality to enter the U.S. market to competition, if you do not know in Mexico The Beetle is made for the whole world so much as Mexico has only the brands have strategies do not be ignorant
@seansound I think the electric handbrake which replaces the traditional handbrake does not work wel.I having problems, like grabbing when you want to go. This old new handbreake in US cars will be better solution.Old classic way is better choice.
Bland, boring, and generic. It's definitely going to sell like hotcakes in the mid-sized sedan market if priced right. Now could someone point me to the nearest CPO Passat CC?
@vr6pwrd I disagree with you on VW enthusiasts not liking the car. I see it as classic german engineering. The majority of previous VW automobiles were just as "bland". They are just taking design a different route.
@1949coupe My passat ran to 820,729 kms... reliablity wasn't an issue. (repair bills over the years: $2,819.00) btw, that Passat took me around the world and back :) I love it.
The video quality was great but the director of photography/videographer had no idea what they were doing. 2012 VW Passat on the other hand, yes please!
@70HeavyChevy that is a HUGE insult to hyundai. have you seen the new hyundais and kias? they are pretty sweet. they are definitely not the clunkers of old anymore.

bland but nice, which is what the majority of american drivers like. VW enthusiasts won't like this car, but thats not the target audience.
I would like the 2.0 TDi, great engine. But this car is a bit bland like everyone is saying. The new Sonata Turbo on the other hand....
those who criticize the Jetta low quality to better compete in the U.S. market. so you are to blame for wanting good nice and cheap
@tewkewl True. Hyundai's and Kia's aren't my style, but they do look better than that turd. It's disgraceful to German cars.
Handbrake on this Passat is non-electric. In Europe we have electric handbrake on all new Passat. Very interesting.
I hope this appeals to most americans because VW fans will not like this.. i know i dont. I will keep my B6.
That thing is so 1994 Honda Accord-ish... Not impressed. And what a nightmare front end to clean. Tilt!
think they could've changed the exterior a little bit and not just copied the '11 jetta
@vr6pwrd bland? it's going to have an optional 3.6 vr6 with 280 hp
@vr6pwrd bland? it's going to have an optional 3.6 vr6 with 280 hp
@PS2Gameplays i was about to write it looks like audi from behind
I want to see it on bags.....they should make that an option.
@jdomes I know...I figured that VMG woulda left the 1 off
This is not a German car. This is a japanese wanna-be. boo.
