Hindsight is a wonderful thing, this game didn't stand a chance against FIFA 08 but looking back, this was still a pretty ambitious effort for their first true next gen debut (PES 6 on 360 was a rushed upgraded port of the PS2 version to the market to capitalise on the console and I don't really consider it a true next gen debut) despite it's limitations. Every now and then I go back to 2008 and still find a way to have great time, the AI is pretty great on this game and manages to surprise me.
Hearing the segment on AI in this documentary has made me interested in checking it out again. I still remember loving the demo when it came out. I kept spamming the Ronaldo chop move. It was great fun. I think seeing these extra moves made it feel like it was a leap from PES 6.
sorry konami, i'm a big fan of PES since PS1 came out, thanks for the memories. i only played up to efootball 2021. times have changed, you care more about money from online income, old players like me can only step back and switch to EA
It definitely took them a few years to find their feet on the newer gen consoles. They never hit the heights of the final couple of PS2 games, but they had some good years from 2010 to 2013.
The thing is FIFA wasn't the household game we know today until 2008, I don't think Konami were quite as prepared as EA were when it came to transitioning to PS3/360. EA rebuilt FIFA from the ground up and threw everything they had at revolutionising football games totally ran away with the market from that point onwards.
You’re a brave man if you go back and play it 😂. There a few fascinating little bits in here. Some of the new features and ideas were probably missed and/or under appreciated due to how poorly optimised the game was.
My guilty pleasure, because of Seabass im in a glory church of Pro Evolution Soccer best football game in history!!!! Time between PES 3-6 is a golden era of football simulation
It is obvious that Seabass and Co struggled with the transition to newer Gen but his body of work is remarkable. It is crazy to think that his games like PES6 are still hugely popular still and extremely playable.
2008 on ‘new gen’ wasn’t the greatest but I still find it pretty interesting to hear the Devs talk about the gameplay elements.

I wonder if the Devs had it performing any better on those Test PS3s yeah had.
