Coleman Heater
Coleman Heater Catalytic avacado heater.
Thanks for watching. Have you ever used one of these? Do you have any special memories connected to these?
2 words, "Coleman Quality". Nobody, in my mind beats Coleman quality. Love this beautiful Avocado heater. Why they stopped making these baffles me. It's tried and true. It's not any unsafe than the Mr. Buddy heater, obviously after you light it OUTSIDE. With any burning heater, propane or white gas, you need to have good ventilation. Some might say that Carbon monoxide output is the issue, but it let's off very mininal Carbon Monoxide. The issue is Oxygen depletion, with any fuel burning heater. So, wither way you have to have some windows cracked in the tent. I've used my Coleman with no issue, accept one must've been used with gasoline, which let's off an odor, but the other one I use has no odor. Mine are both made in the 60's and run like a champ.
@jshoota19ify Coleman makes excellent products, no doubt. I would blame the UL (Underwriters Laboratory) as the reason these aren't made anymore combined with people not wanting to take that extra step of lighting it outside. The good news is, that Coleman products are built to last, so even though they don't make them anymore, people who know what's up can still get them.
Thank you
What a cool stove I'm going to be on the lookout for one big fan of Coleman stuff take care my friend and GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
Excellent & God bless you and yours
Good as new.
I hope so.
Remember though, new for thus thing was 1974. Absolutely no safety rules on place.
As it should be.
I had an idea about your A-Team style shopping cart! Fill a large section of large diameter fuel-line with the White Gas. Put pet-cock valves (used on motorcycle gas tanks) on both ends. Attach it under the main basket of the A-Team cart, around the underside perimeter by using conduit/pipe hangers. That would hold a LOT of volume and be out of the way.
You could fill that tubing by putting one end in the bulk can, with a smaller piece of tubing under the valve used only for filling purposes, and draw the fuel out with a big/fat syringe at the other end; similar piece of "filling purpose tubing" at the syringe end too. When the syringe gets fuel in it, you're SHTF fuel-reserve storage line is full. Close both pet-cock valves, remove both fill-tubing pieces and you're done! You can refill a heater from either valve, on the fly.
You Sir....
Are a GENIUS!!!!!!!!
My dad had one.
It wasnt Coleman.
It was smaller in diameter.
Had straight sides.
Was blue.
Dad brought it camping and mom banished it from the campsite.
A year later he bought a Montgomery Ward lantern that was blue also.
The lantern made as much heat as the heater.
A year after that he bought a Coleman two burner stove.
This was @ 1966.
Why did she banish it? Do you remember? Was it the smell that turned her off?
A lot of times, Coleman would special make items for Sears or Montgomery Ward and it would be the same item but a different color.
I bet if you still had that blue heater today, collectors would pay a pretty penny for it.
I know I would!
@@T_B she didnt think it was safe, thought it was a fire hazard.
When you light it, the large flame
is kinda scary.
WoW what a cool product. I've learned alot watching your channel.
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Yeah, this could be a handy little heater for a shop or something. Today most heaters are all propane.
Acquired one of these when my Dad passed a few years ago. Pulled out of my attic today and decided to check it out. Your video helped a lot. Mine was made in 1977 and it’s almost perfect.
I'm glad I could help. It's getting into the teens (Fahrenheit) here, so it's time to fire mine up as well out in the shop.
Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing a great memory
We had the previous "fly eye" model. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS light outside in a clear area.
Used it to warm up the 8x10 canvas tent inside about 30 minutes BEFORE we entered for sleeping.
Had one corner of window slighty open for ventilation. Shut off soon as into the sleeping bag.
A few times, relight in the morning when it was below freezing, and snowing, while putting on clothing.
Still own the "fly eye", and "advacado" which was free from an old neighbor.
Old "Coleman" white gas gear, more dependable than propane, in my experience. Can use automotive fuel in a pinch.
Modified my Peak One lantern to have cooktop. Perfect for backpacking. No wasting the pressurized canisters, carrying empty. White fuel bottles get lighter by the day, reuse, and easy to refill, unleaded gas if necessary available everywhere.
That's why I love Coleman stuff. And absolutely for sure!.... Light it outside. The camera didn't pick it up properly, but these things can be a raging inferno when first lit.
Once it settles down it kicks out a wonderful heat.
Stay warm & stay safe buddy.
Thank you
Very informative, thanks for posting this video!
You're welcome, thank you for watching.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
That thing cleaned up pretty good. I've only ever seen these at like flea markets in the past. Glad it didn't take too much too get going. I was half expecting it to have a primer plunger being white gas and all. Reminds me I have an old Coleman 2 burner white gas stove I need to finish repainting the fuel tank for it. Just waiting for warmer temps so the paint cures properly.
That's awesome.
I love love love Coleman stuff, especially old Coleman stuff.
I have more for the channel here just haven't gotten around to it yet, stay tuned!
@OliveDrabAlliance Near as I can tell, mine is a 1958 413e. I'll put that up on the channel once I get some more done to it.
@@pipingandcamping Excellent!
Definetly old enough to remember this kind of heater. Looking to buy one now.
I almost fired mine up tonight out in the shop. It is sitting right next to my kerosene Heather, but this is the one I would have fired up.
Pick one up !
Thank you
Made back in the day when the products and the people that used them were a hell of alot tougher than today , great video, thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching. Definitely from a different era.... just like a lot of us.
Thank you. I've seen several of these heaters. You've done a nice job with this video.👍🏻
Thank you. They are pretty good heaters, but I know they can be a little intimidating or off putting for some people. It's probably time for me to revisit this topic.
Thanks for watching
I found one of these last week WITH a gallon of fuel. I tried it out, the 40 year old fuel worked, but I'm gonna try it with fresh fuel. It is very warm!!
Great little ship heater & that is awesome about the fuel. I swear by Coleman. They make good stuff that's for sure.
Thanks for watching & stay warm
I have a couple of these heaters. They put out good heat. Especially the 5000 to 8000 BTU ones
I may have overstressed the dangers of these... just trying to be cautious. I've seen quite a few recently on fb marketplace and I might pick up one or two more.
Thanks for watching
Nice
Thank you.
Have a great day!
I helped my brother in law clean out a shed on property he just bought.
There was a Coleman heater in there.
He gave it to me.
Will be checking it out and cleaning it soon.
I just need to get a nice washcloth.
Might I suggest one of your wife's nicer washcloths?
They are excellent for cleaning old Colemans.
And congrats on the excellent score!
I just picked one up to restore and was wondering what exactly it did. Perfect timing on the video! Thanks
Awesome!
I'm glad to hear that.
GREAT jOB AS A COMONTATOR!!!
Thank you. I appreciate it very much.
Nice I have a smaller Thermos brand bare aluminum one with a dome top and snuffer…got it for cold weather camping…don’t like the smell of kerosene heaters …they used to be a big thing for cabins and ice fishing back in the day of Colman fuel stoves and lanterns…now the fuel is so expensive. Have fun stay safe.
The fuel is expensive, most heaters now are propane and that has also gotten expensive.
Hopefully someday the prices will come down.
Thank you.
I just bought one of these stamped 5/73 off of marketplace for $10, then $15 for a gallon of Coleman fuel at Walmart to try it out. We used to buy it for 3 or 4 dollars back in the 70s.
It is crazy expensive, but it won't gunk up your Coleman like gasoline will. Definitely better than anything with ethanol in it too.
I have one, used it quite a bit around 2005 tenting in crappy weather. Never gave a thought to carbon monoxide, but we survived. Now I have a battery operated CO detector to monitor this or a big buddy heater.
Awesome.
Coleman made/makes some good stuff!
If you you Crack all your windows you'll be safe. It's the Oxygen consumption that's more worrisome. That's why you have to have good ventilation even for the Mr. BUDDY heater. The thing about Mr. BUDDY HEATER is it shuts off when low Oxygen. Just open some windows and the Coleman is super safe.
Most really useful stuff is dangerous in some way. It pays to read the instructions and to be careful. CO poses a real risk, detectors are available. Another fun video by the way.
Thank you
That is for sure, chainsaws, power tools can all be dangerous but are very useful
"Wife's wash cloth" love it. 😮
Oh boy... She sure didn't think it was funny.
Just kidding, she is a good sport.
Thanks for watching
@@OliveDrabAlliance 🤔😂😂
After these get going, does it have a smell when using
No, the scary part is that you can't tell it is doing anything, no sound no nothing except the heat coming off of it.
R.I.P. Olive Drab. This sucks!! I really liked this channel, too.
When Mrs. Olive Drab sees this, he's a dead man. 🤣🤣
Btw, my Humanitarian Daily Ration got here a few days ago and I'll be trying your (#1) first then moving up to her (#2) choice. It was "packed" on 10/2021 but "inspected" on 1/2024. I called the shipper and they said it has a suggested 5.5 year shelf life. I saw your box in the background so I thought I'd update here.
Aw man... what did I do?
Oh... its the washcloths.
Just don't tell her and she will never know.
Hahaha
can you show a video how you get the top off to look at the wick?
That's a good video idea. I might start working on it tonight. I can tell you here that once you lift open the dome you will see the metal wick holder. It looks like it is one piece of metal, but it is two and unscrews apart. You might need to use some channel locks, just don't crush or dent it. Once you take that apart you can cut off the tip of the wick if it is nasty then feed the wick upward as much as you cut off and yiu are good as new. As long as there is enough wick left that is.
I have been looking since I saw this and today just got a 1960s model (has 66 on bottom) with the original box on market place for $20.00 it looks like it was never ran!
Excellent find!
There's nothing better than a great deal!
I need to send you my Big Buddy heater. That thing is a piece of junk. Shuts off on high, spits and sputters on low. Was like that out the box. Did a thorough cleaning, still the same
I'd give it a try.
What could possibly go wrong?
Can you use it to cook?
I'm sure you could. Put a skillet on top and I'm sure it would cook.
Olive drab,My favorite color❤
A sure sign of a fellow genius.
Thanks for watching
Once the ignition flame burns off, there is no more flame...the heat is generated by a catalytic reaction, not by combustion. Catalytic reactions DO NOT generate carbon monoxide...but they DO consume oxygen. Bottom line, you still need ventilation, but they're a lot safer to use indoors than anything that anything that has an actual flame.
Thanks for the info. We use this in the barn where there is a LOT of ventilation, but I would use it inside the house if the kerosene heaters couldn't keep up.
Thanks for sharing and have a great day
Bet the art director on STAR WARS used this as inspiration for darth vader scene???
Or that red and white Droid the Skywalkers tried to buy before R2D2
@@OliveDrabAlliance yesssss!!!!!!
Your wife's good dish clothes have superior dirt absorption properties.
Proven scientific fact!
Hahaha!!!
These things work great. And aren't as precarious as this video claims.
Looking at it now, I might have been a little over dramatic.
Thank you for watching and I appreciate the comments very much. I hope you'll stay tuned.
I'm thinking this dude's a little soft......maybe even a liberal. Coleman has always manufactured items for "men" to use. (just saying)
I try to stay neutral on youtube, but definitely not a liberal.
I figured that some of the younger viewers may have never delt with a device that doesn't have 100 built in safety features.
