I've raised worms for 40 years, my dad did also. We used the highest yield of protein chick starter, soaked it in 5gal buckets of water until it ferments, then feed. The red worms love it.
Thank you for your videos especially for the one on eggshells. I have been grinding them by hand. It was hard work, took ages and never gave me the fine powder I got after 1 minute or so in the grinder.
I have been vermicomposting for about a year now and I have enough to really good a good organic start and test this year. I will also be using worm tea [already have on some cuttings] and liquid seaweed going all organic this year.
Having given up on worm composting for years after the meltdown I am now going to start again after watching your videos and since I have time to see to the compost properly now that I have retired.
great video's Larry . I have learned so much. but in the process of learning it has just created many more questions. I wont bother asking when you have so many fans that are still waiting for you to answer their questions. we all hope you can find some time to address some of them. God bless and looking forward to knew videos
Have been raising red wigglers for the past few years decided to try European nightcrawlers. Ordered the worms and set up a 27 gal tote with natural bedding ( leaf mold, compost, shredded leaves and a bit of native soil). When the worms arrived I dumped them in the bin, gave them a good shower and left them alone for a few days before feeding them. After giving them a good feeding, I checked the bin a week later to see how things were going. The food was all gone, but even after I fed and covered them, these little darlings were climbing up the sides of the tote. The red wigglers have never done that. So now when I feed them, I disturbed them as little as possible and do it under a good light. Live and learn. Just subscribed to your channel, look forward to taking a closer look. Stay well!!!
Thanks too for the excellent tip on feeding compost worms. Years ago I had a 10 litre bucket with bought worms. Though I just threw the waste in it went fine till I put some mackrel scraps in it. It got so hot the worms melted. Did it stink. I could not save 1 worm.
The liquid that drains from the box is a great liquid fertilizer and allows you to use your scraps (they love tea bags).. If you add some brown material with your scrapes (which is better for your worms anyway) the moisture stays pretty spot on. Brown materials are organic things that sit and won't smell bad over time and are not overly wet. Popular ones include coffee grounds, AGED dead leaves/yard cuttings/grass (do not use fresh of any of those, the material should already be beginning to break down and dry. A leaf/yard pile is awesome for this) , shredded newspaper, chemical free wood pulp/saw dust (in small quantities-they break down very slowly). There may be others but don't give your worms citrus, onion family (onions, scallions, garlic, etc.), or chlorinated water. If you use tap water let it sit and air out over night or more. If you have a yard or garden check out worm tea (made from castings) and free range worms here on YT. There are so many great videos out there from people who know more than I do. Happy worming friends. Be blessed. --Caution,I heard someone crashed their worm farm with cornmeal so do your research and add it slowly.
I have a question I'm new doing this worm bin. by you adding the powder food and adding the wet news paper will that powder stick to the paper and still the worms will eat it
new to this. great video. can you throw as much of the worms into the fruit trees i have in my garden. any down side to these worms in the soil. thank you!
Cool Video Larry, I used to keep worms for fishing when I was a kid, now I', old and want to start fishing and worming again, are you still doing this? Thanks for posting
I don't use European night crawlers but the red worms. Do this European worms need to be in not so wet bedding. I ask you because my bean is always so wet that i can't sift it but I'm afraid that if i let it dry i will damage the worms.
You have a great assortment of worms =) I started with red wigglers last year and I'm looking forward to warmer weather when I can bring them up from the basement. I'm having so much fun with them! I'm subbing to your channel to learn more! Thanks for a good video =)
hey larry, i feel the same as you about earthworms (nothing cooler) but hey... you have to try putting down some fresh carrot pulp collected from your juicer and watch how fast it vanishes. like a full half gallon over night!!!
Where do you get so many worms at? Like do you just find them or go to a Walmart and buy out their whole fridge... And also do you fish with them to keep the numbers down?
Hey new worm farmer here. I'm wondering if I put red wiglers in with my night crawlers if they will kill each other off. I ordered 1000 today and have room for them in my night crawler box. I'm wondering because I feel like the red wigglers would help keep their that cleaner since they are really good at composting. I'm planning to use the red wigglers for fertilizer and the nightcrawlers to sell to fisherman
How big of a bin should i use for my 200 euro nightcrawlers? I want to try to keep a steady colony of 500 worms. I am currently using a bin that is 16 L x 11 W inches and is 7 inches deep. Is that enough for 200 worms? and will it be enough for 500 worms??
Larry, thanks for all of the information you are sharing. I have set up a ben and I have had it going for about two weeks now. I just purchased some night crawlers and worms from a sporting goods store. I wanted to see if I could get them to live. I have some potting soil, pet moss, and a little sand mixed together. I have placed straw and leaves on top. I will feed them about every three days or so with some corn meal, egg shells, and a little coffee. I haven't seen any signs of them reproducing and I was wondering how long that would take and how often should I replace my soil mixture ? Thanks again for all of your information.
Yeah what I was thinking too :) …. I also started juicing carrot , apple , celery , beetroot .. really nice drink , but it is the left over pulp that the worms really love !
Salute from Brazil! Very interesting vídeos! Do you know if it can be used as bait for fishing in saltwater? Did anyone ever try? I love fishing at the beach and feel tempted to start a worm Box!
Rolled oats not instant oats right ? If you had a 2# feed mix 1# oats and 1# cornmeal how many egg shells would you add ? Would a food processer /chopper work as well ? Or a blender ?
Hello, what is the white powder that you feed the worms, what components they carry. Hola, que es el polvo blanco que le echa usted de alimento a las lombrices, que componentes lleva.
Larry can this be done with a two bucket system the top bucket I will drill holes underneath If in case I decide to feed worms food scraps, as you said they will be more wet and will have some sort of liquid.
where do y put your finished worm poop? inside, in the garage. can I put it in the pale outside next to the wall on the north side? will they freeze, i mean their cocoon? thank you
Hi Larry. What is the optimum temperature to keep these worms? What is the warmest and coolest you think they would thrive? I am going to do this, but I am wondering what the best temp is. I am in Ohio.
Hey Larry I watch your videos and I found them very interesting, I want to start a worm bin with Red Wigglers but also have a 55 Gallon barrel I made into a vertical garden and installed a 4" PVC with holes in the middle. I want to use this European Night Crawler in this barrel.
I think the whole point of having a worm farm is to feed them healthy kitchen food scraps ! Not to buy worm food . They eat your food waist ! If you want to supplement that … add crushed egg shells for calcium and grit !
***** I see …. yes well I guess for our worm farms , it is good to feed them a variety …… keeps them happy :) I powdered up eegs shells for mine the other day :)

Yes equal parts corn meal and oatmeal also add some crushed egg shells which i put in my spice grinder! Also chicken mash is good!
Rolled oats is less processed but either will work! As far as the egg shells add some to the food but you can also sprinkle on the worm bed!
I've raised worms for 40 years, my dad did also. We used the highest yield of protein chick starter, soaked it in 5gal buckets of water until it ferments, then feed. The red worms love it.
Is there a recipe for using the chick starter (an amount) to the water? Thank you. I have started to grow worms.
See that corn meal in background, thats all you need !

How do you keep compost worms in the bin for those who use uncovered bins on shelves?
I have a question by giving them the dry dood and laying down the wet paper does the food stick to the paper and still eat it
Thank You Larry for sharing your very interesting and helpful videos..

Thank you for the tip Larry. Looks like a Great idea to me. Nice video! God Bless ✝

Chicken mash is what you start baby chickens on! It is very fine ground meal!
What size bin is it and how deep is your bedding
If you only feed with worm food will you only have worms in your bin instead of all the other bugs that come with composting?
So you soak your newspaper? I put myn in dry and it comes out soaked in less than a day. Is it soaked because they are breaking it down?

That depends on the kinds of worms and how many you have! You will know when it is time to change the bedding it will be very black.
