I'm sure there's plenty of books that have accounts of battles to draw inspiration from. Christ a decent rts game will teach you not to attack the front lines with cavalry.
I actually think they still could have had Arya kill the NK - IF they did it correctly. If we saw what Dan and Dave promised: "A showdown between Jon and the NK is coming. One more intense than Hardhome, more intense than Beyond the Wall. It's going to shock the fans" If we saw Jon, Briene, Jamie, Jorah or anyone with Valerian Steel fight and kill the WW's and then Jon went 1v1 vs the NK- I can totally see the NK winning that fight and kicking Jon's ass, but before the NK can kill Jon- he's saved from Arya. It's a payoff that would have more worthy than the one that we got.

Spear/shieldwalls outside of the walls can be useful (especially when the enemy has no firepower) because it buys your archers on the walls more time to shoot at the enemy, though clearly nobody on the wall was taking advantage of this anyway

That's not all they put there artillery right in the front so when the cavalry dies the artillery may deal enough close range damage to end them only to run out of ammo at the last second. The fucking Greenskins are better strategists than these people cause at least when they charge they are smart enough to ensure that some "sneaky git" is going to be right behind and ruin you and they are smart enough to launch squigs at you. At least they put their artillery right behind some big boyz.
Yeah she was one of the actresses who actually read the books and dived as deep as she could into it. She learned how to sword fight left handed because the character in the books was left handed. Now she is ambidextrous because of it and actually helped form the idea of that double edged staff Gendry forges for her that can be broken and dual wielded. Now only if D+D could’ve had the same attention to detail as Maisie did. Tbh ASoIaF still uses plot armor. Samwell should have died at the Fist, or at White Tree, or Crasters, and Jon should have died in the Skirling Pass. Its also never an important character that dies to happenstance, except maybe Khal Drogo and the infected wound.

There's heavy foreshadowing that Gollum has a very significant role to play, it's highlighted many times, and when he destroys the ring it's a satisfying payoff. It rewards the mercy of both Frodo and Bilbo. Arya coming out of fucking nowhere doesn't pay off any foreshadowing or complete any arcs. It's just a plot twist invented on the spot for the sake of avoiding the expected.

Why did they even go that far north of the wall to get a wight to show Cersei and Daenarys? Take some low life criminal on death row and kill him on the other side of the wall. Anyone that dies north of the wall turns into a wight at that point in the show. If they did this then NK doesn’t kill any dragons and wall is never breached. They would have to build ships or cross the bridge of skulls at westwatch-by-the-bridge. Also why are the heavily armored knights of the vale not on horseback? I’m sure heavily armored lancer cavalry would do much better in a charge than the Dothraki would with kopesh swords and some horse archers here and there.

Nope this review is an injustice First viewing everyone will read into the episode differently but how we perceive it will determine our willingness to bring it to life. There is a song of ice and fire, a pacing between light and dark and an elegant dance between writer and director. When we get the well light visible footage that is the creators telling you, pay attention we’re trying to show you something, when it goes dark hampering your view that is the director saying you’re in the moment now. Know you’re aware of the intricate relationship of the footage. It twists and bends around each other and welds together to form the visual present that you’re in. The episode is a complete show, there is no tell but if you pay attention to what they are clearly showing you. You get the first payoff, they have made the viewer be the ones to tell the tail. This doesn’t mean you go about it as I’ve stated before with your own ideas. The concept of the episode is that everything that is going on is happening in precent time. So placing ideas like changing up the battle plan is not going to enlighten you or help the situation as it is already in motion. It is the pawn pieces in play at the beginning. The Dothraki and one tiny Jorah. All on horses ready to charge. Previous dialogue has Jon stating in a speech that we cannot defeat the dead in a straight fight. But way are the Dothraki doing the exact opposite. This all comes down to how crafty the dialogue and building of the show is (tick 2). The dialogue in the previous episode comes over as a speech but the dialogue when moved into the present comes across as Jon trying to tell the Dothraki there actions will not work. We now know why the Dothraki are heading a charge. All those Jorah conversations with daenerys about the ways of the dothraki and how they only follow a person of strength is the reason they didn’t listen to the little crow of the North. They didn’t want to change or adapt to the treat, treating it as a normal battle. You get the visual to allow you to get this information but you need to get the ability to tell the part from previous episodes. So the first payoff given to you by the writer, is a great reward for your devotion to the show if you’re not too lost in the dark in order to find it. The viewer is essential a three eyed raven. Viewing the past to bring information into the present allowing it to make sense. Then the director takes over and now you are in the charge with the Dothraki. You get to see it exactly as they would when riding out to meet their maker. So they charge like they normally would, you get to see tiny Jorah hedge in the charge as he is aware this will not go well, then as soon as the first projectile lands we get a brief light up of what they just galloped into. Bringing forth the next payoff. You cannot fight the dead as you would a living army. You think your ideas for fighting the dead would be superior, it would never work as the writer has informed you that the outcome would be the same. Now you have an idea of how you can go about finding the payoffs hidden in the story. In writing there is always a reason for why things are happening and then the conclusion comes delivering all the payoffs.

We don’t really think too much about this concept but when Arya kills the Night King. The scenes depicting her and those who aid her are progressing through the actions of the characters themselves making her journey the present. All scenes away from her and those not accompanying her need your interpretation of the past.
The play-by-play was appreciated because I legitimately couldn't fucking see half the shit happening in the opening part of the battle and I really don't want to rewatch it.

She is actually quite competent in that regard. She also leveled complaint at the directors in the chase scene with the waif, where she was running away wounded and thanks ro her, they toned it down. She did a good job, given the shit she had to work with.

The actor isn't exactly the greatest thing ever but if you see him in other movies, he's alright. In most of Star Wars he's trash but that's not his fault. When you realize that the Night King could have just kept sending blizzards for a week or two and forced Jon and co to either abandon the castle to avoid a large chunk of the army from freezing to death/deserting, or forced Jon's army into marching from the castle to fight him at a location of the Night Kings choosing. He didn't even need to send blizzards, he could have just done a traditional siege and starved the defenders out. Whitewalkers are perfect for conducting a siege. They don't need to be fed or paid, they don't get demoralized from long campaigns away from home, and they don't die off from disease.

What infuriates me is that a large story in an omnibus handles an undead invasion like this a million times better than a multi-million dollar show. Gotrek and Felix, while set in the Warhammer Fantasy world with vastly different magic systems and technology (mostly renaissance stuff for the main human faction) still understands the very basics of this kind of this shit, AND actually dives into some nuances of how a siege like this would go. This shouldn't have been a one-episode thing. Winterfell is a massive fortress with countless defenders and some of the most brilliant minds in the setting. This should have been a long, drawn out siege of attrition, where the Night King is sending wave after wave of his minions against the walls of a fortress that the defenders have spent weeks preparing. It should have been a series of brutal, violent battles where the defenders spent day after day throwing back countless waves of wights, fighting to the brink of exhaustion while the dragons wear themselves to the bone trying to burn as many of the wights as possible. The defenders employ every defensive tactic under the sun: oil, spike traps, spear walls, holding key choke points. Everything. But the wights just keep on coming. Each character would get their moment to shine contributing to the defense while trying to work under the pressure of the fate of the world on their shoulders. But nope.

@@Longshanks1690 - Completely changes the tone from a series where the more tactical characters are ones to succeed to one where good guys win against bad guys. - "Hold the Door" was a poor time paradox. - Arya's whole story with the Waith was pure plot armour and her suddenly learning to master face changing and bake pies made little sense. - Cersei receiving no consequences for having burnt down the most important religious building in Westeros and those within it, as well as betraying the series' premise of succession being complicated (the entire basis of the War of the Five Kings) by immediately making her queen. - Jon Snow becomes a Gary Stu who gains the support of the entire north when he would've had no chance without the army of the Vale. - Tyrion going from being excellent at political manoeuvres to being a failure in Mereen, as well as the entire Mereen plot having been made a waste of time. Sure, Seas 6 definitely wasn't awful...
The episode immediately after Tywin's death on the shitter is noticeably worse, lol. They are completely fucking clueless without GRRM and they cant write old-English sounding dialogue to save their fucking lives so they just gave up and all the characters talk like Americans now. Then the fight happens and 2 characters die and the entirety of the enemy force is destroyed and the symbolism the whole show was trying to push (throne not important, it's life vs death) is destroyed with them. You have to at least admire Maisie Williams for beng honest and vocal about her disappoinment, even though she was excited to do the scene, but she knew it was stupid and bad writing. Even someone as young and inexprienced as Maisie could see what hacks D&D were at writing.
Shes not even that young or inexperienced she's an adult with adult opinions and this is the worst writing in the world it's not that hard to notice how terrible it is. Especially if you're part of it
They've had a few good additions to the show that havent been in the books as i undestand it. They seem to be decent with dialogue(mostly). Storytelling tho, last half of the the show feels like someone took on too many responsibilities so everything turns out half baked or gets completely neglected.

I just realised that the undead dragon blows a massive hole in Winterfell's huge stone wall in one shot, and then later it can't kill Jon with it's fire because he's hiding behind a tiny little stone. LOL.
The reason for that is because the undead dragon is badly injured by the time it goes after Jon. You can see a couple of shots of it as it tries firing but the blue fire isn't coming out properly. It's not a plot hole, it's just not very clear because it's so dark it's nearly impossible to see anything...

Jon went on a Benny Hill style chase of the Night King the entire episode and Arya just teleports behind him and dunks on him. I’d like to see an after credit scene of Jon running into the Godswood out of breath telling them how he killed a dragon with a scream and that he is here to fight the Night King. That would bring the comedy of this episode to full circle.

Spear/shieldwalls outside of the walls can be useful (especially when the enemy has no firepower) because it buys your archers on the walls more time to shoot at the enemy, though clearly nobody on the wall was taking advantage of this anyway

I am a tactical enthusiast, I did had a god damned stroke watching this episode. I actually screamed out loud. Only someone who knows medieval tactics could do this much wrong. They had to know what to do right, and do the opposite.

I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but ASOIAF was my favorite work of fiction and up until they ran out of source material, the show was my favorite show. I can't believe they destroyed 8 years of intrigue in a single episode. I've never seen a shark-jumping moment like this before. Considering the stakes and the fallout, this may be the single worst episode of television of all time.

That's not all they put there artillery right in the front so when the cavalry dies the artillery may deal enough close range damage to end them only to run out of ammo at the last second. It is downright embarrassing that a show would go from famous for averting plot armor to infamous for excessive use of it.
Tbh ASoIaF still uses plot armor. Samwell should have died at the Fist, or at White Tree, or Crasters, and Jon should have died in the Skirling Pass. Its also never an important character that dies to happenstance, except maybe Khal Drogo and the infected wound.
This episode marks the point where GoT became what it originally sought to deconstruct.

Arya coming out of fucking nowhere doesn't pay off any foreshadowing or complete any arcs. It's just a plot twist invented on the spot for the sake of avoiding the expected.

Why did they even go that far north of the wall to get a wight to show Cersei and Daenarys? Take some low life criminal on death row and kill him on the other side of the wall. Anyone that dies north of the wall turns into a wight at that point in the show. If they did this then NK doesn’t kill any dragons and wall is never breached. They would have to build ships or cross the bridge of skulls at westwatch-by-the-bridge. Also why are the heavily armored knights of the vale not on horseback? I’m sure heavily armored lancer cavalry would do much better in a charge than the Dothraki would with kopesh swords and some horse archers here and there.

First viewing everyone will read into the episode differently but how we perceive it will determine our willingness to bring it to life. There is a song of ice and fire, a pacing between light and dark and an elegant dance between writer and director.
When we get the well light visible footage that is the creators telling you, pay attention we’re trying to show you something, when it goes dark hampering your view that is the director saying you’re in the moment now. Know you’re aware of the intricate relationship of the footage. It twists and bends around each other and welds together to form the visual present that you’re in.
The episode is a complete show, there is no tell but if you pay attention to what they are clearly showing you. You get the first payoff, they have made the viewer be the ones to tell the tail. This doesn’t mean you go about it as I’ve stated before with your own ideas. The concept of the episode is that everything that is going on is happening in precent time. So placing ideas like changing up the battle plan is not going to enlighten you or help the situation as it is already in motion. It is the pawn pieces in play at the beginning. The Dothraki and one tiny Jorah. All on horses ready to charge. Previous dialogue has Jon stating in a speech that we cannot defeat the dead in a straight fight. But way are the Dothraki doing the exact opposite. This all comes down to how crafty the dialogue and building of the show is (tick 2). The dialogue in the previous episode comes over as a speech but the dialogue when moved into the present comes across as Jon trying to tell the Dothraki there actions will not work. We now know why the Dothraki are heading a charge. All those Jorah conversations with daenerys about the ways of the dothraki and how they only follow a person of strength is the reason they didn’t listen to the little crow of the North. They didn’t want to change or adapt to the treat, treating it as a normal battle.
You get the visual to allow you to get this information but you need to get the ability to tell the part from previous episodes. So the first payoff given to you by the writer, is a great reward for your devotion to the show if you’re not too lost in the dark in order to find it. The viewer is essential a three eyed raven. Viewing the past to bring information into the present allowing it to make sense.
Then the director takes over and now you are in the charge with the Dothraki. You get to see it exactly as they would when riding out to meet their maker. So they charge like they normally would, you get to see tiny Jorah hedge in the charge as he is aware this will not go well, then as soon as the first projectile lands we get a brief light up of what they just galloped into. Bringing forth the next payoff. You cannot fight the dead as you would a living army. You think your ideas for fighting the dead would be superior, it would never work as the writer has informed you that the outcome would be the same.
Now you have an idea of how you can go about finding the payoffs hidden in the story. In writing there is always a reason for why things are happening and then the conclusion comes delivering all the payoffs.

We don’t really think too much about this concept but when Arya kills the Night King. The scenes depicting her and those who aid her are progressing through the actions of the characters themselves making her journey the present. All scenes away from her and those not accompanying her need your interpretation of the past.
The play-by-play was appreciated because I legitimately couldn't fucking see half the shit happening in the opening part of the battle and I really don't want to rewatch it.

When you realize that the Night King could have just kept sending blizzards for a week or two and forced Jon and co to either abandon the castle to avoid a large chunk of the army from freezing to death/deserting, or forced Jon's army into marching from the castle to fight him at a location of the Night Kings choosing. Sun Tzu's The Art of War 101.
He didn't even need to send blizzards, he could have just done a traditional siege and starved the defenders out. Whitewalkers are perfect for conducting a siege. They don't need to be fed or paid, they don't get demoralized from long campaigns away from home, and they don't die off from disease.

What infuriates me is that a large story in an omnibus handles an undead invasion like this a million times better than a multi-million dollar show. Gotrek and Felix, while set in the Warhammer Fantasy world with vastly different magic systems and technology (mostly renaissance stuff for the main human faction) still understands the very basics of this kind of this shit, AND actually dives into some nuances of how a siege like this would go. This shouldn't have been a one-episode thing. Winterfell is a massive fortress with countless defenders and some of the most brilliant minds in the setting. This should have been a long, drawn out siege of attrition, where the Night King is sending wave after wave of his minions against the walls of a fortress that the defenders have spent weeks preparing. It should have been a series of brutal, violent battles where the defenders spent day after day throwing back countless waves of wights, fighting to the brink of exhaustion while the dragons wear themselves to the bone trying to burn as many of the wights as possible. The defenders employ every defensive tactic under the sun: oil, spike traps, spear walls, holding key choke points. Everything. But the wights just keep on coming. Each character would get their moment to shine contributing to the defense while trying to work under the pressure of the fate of the world on their shoulders. But nope.

- Arya's whole story with the Waith was pure plot armour and her suddenly learning to master face changing and bake pies made little sense.
- Cersei receiving no consequences for having burnt down the most important religious building in Westeros and those within it, as well as betraying the series' premise of succession being complicated (the entire basis of the War of the Five Kings) by immediately making her queen.
- Jon Snow becomes a Gary Stu who gains the support of the entire north when he would've had no chance without the army of the Vale.
- Tyrion going from being excellent at political manoeuvres to being a failure in Mereen, as well as the entire Mereen plot having been made a waste of time.

You have to at least admire Maisie Williams for beng honest and vocal about her disappoinment, even though she was excited to do the scene, but she knew it was stupid and bad writing. Even someone as young and inexprienced as Maisie could see what hacks D&D were at writing.

They've had a few good additions to the show that havent been in the books as i undestand it. They seem to be decent with dialogue(mostly). Storytelling tho, last half of the the show feels like someone took on too many responsibilities so everything turns out half baked or gets completely neglected.

I just realised that the undead dragon blows a massive hole in Winterfell's huge stone wall in one shot, and then later it can't kill Jon with it's fire because he's hiding behind a tiny little stone.

The reason for that is because the undead dragon is badly injured by the time it goes after Jon. You can see a couple of shots of it as it tries firing but the blue fire isn't coming out properly. It's not a plot hole, it's just not very clear because it's so dark it's nearly impossible to see anything...

Well when you think about it, that's sort of what happened in A New Hope. Han emerged from seemingly out of nowhere to shoot at Vader's tie fighter while Vader was chasing Luke

Arya Stark: found out about him like a week ago: murders him with ease
Jon went on a Benny Hill style chase of the Night King the entire episode and Arya just teleports behind him and dunks on him.
I’d like to see an after credit scene of Jon running into the Godswood out of breath telling them how he killed a dragon with a scream and that he is here to fight the Night King. That would bring the comedy of this episode to full circle.
And considering she has never seen him or even a WW EVER.

Well, actually the witch killed him. The cut wouldn't have killed him, but the witch intentionally poisened the cut while pretending to healing it. She admited it later to Dany while she was explaining why she hated him.

I'm pissed about everything, but the destruction of Sam's story arc pisses me off the most. What happened to the years of him gaining courage, learning how to fight despite his fear, and becoming a man who's willing to fight and die to protect his family and friends? I wasn't for a “you go girl” it was because, and I am using the words of D&D here “Jon killing the Night king was too predictable”. This reminds me of a quote I don't know where it is from “when you write your Story, so it ends up that the butcher did, but the readers figure it out before you finish the Story, so you rewrite it as the butler did it instead, you just end up ruining your own story”.

Actually there were two or three, if you assume the one shown with the Dothraki and the one briefly lit by dragon fire weren't all the same one.
