(small gasp) Leopold! In all seriousness, I didn’t know much about Leopold Stokowski, but your videos have helped me gain an appreciation of him. I especially enjoyed the recording of “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune” here. Thank you for sharing.
The 1969 performance of the Schubert b minor is unusually poetic. The Stokowski approach benefits the music: free bowings, placement of the lower strings to emphasize focus and carefully rehearsed use of tempo rubato. Stoki insisted on playing on the beat. In other words, a near perfect synthesis of unity and individual style within the group. There is much to be learned from this man’s approach to orchestral playing.
A 6CD 'BBC Legends' set issued by ICA Classics features assorted broadcasts of "live" concerts in London which show Leopold Stokowski at his best. The works include Mahler's 2nd Symphony, Beethoven's 7th, Brahms's 4th, Berlioz's "Fantastique," Franck's in D minor, Shostakovich's 5th, Vaughan Williams's 8th and other works by Britten, Ravel, Scriabin, Falla, Prokofiev, Novacek and Klemperer. Bravissimo Leopold Stokowski!
3 days later, Maria Callas, also known as La Divina, died at the age of 53. As if 1977 couldn't get any worse.
Two more singers, though of a different kind, also died in 1977: Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley!

A very idiosyncratic conductor, one of indeed! Born & brought up in London, where did he get that accent from? Very strange!
