- This is an Elders Zoom session about the Manchester Housing Clearances( 07-11-21) which concentrates on the 1950s & 60s in Hulme. It is based around the memories of Brenda and Doreen who were both brought up in different parts of Hulme during these housing clearances
So lovely and moving. Resonates with my own feelings of loss. I have lived in Oxford now for nearly 40 years but the Hulme lanscape still appears in my night time dreams. Thanks for posting this.
Absolutely fantastic Brenda thanks for sharing your story on RUclips.😊
So proud of my mum, Brenda, and auntie Maureen.👏👏👍🏻💂♂️🇬🇧🇺🇦🏴
So sad not to be able to walk down the old streets of of my childhood --see my old house,my school,my Grans house. All just memories now-Mulberry street school,Stretford Rd. shops, Leaf St.baths, Hulme Hippodrome,Freddie and the Dreamers visiting our pie shop--I could go on but it just makes me even sadder.
My sentiments exactly.I went to Mulberry Street School.Went shopping on Stretford Road every Saturday.Worked a Saturday job at Woolworths.Saw Pauldens burn down. Also went to the Hulme Hippodrome. Those were the days! Lovely memories of Hulme.
Very enjoyable, brings back lots of memories.Thank you.
Hi there my partner's looking for information about her mum who died when she was quite young. My partner shares her mother's name Catherine Cooper Jones. Catherine's mums maiden name was O'Connor her parents owned a chippy in Hulme Agnes and Daniel O'Connor. Maybe someone you know or yourself might know what chippy and the owners as she's eager to find some family history. Any information would be gratefully received ❤ I love this video I worked in the science park not so long ago but I've wondered around Hulme and it's just amazing to see what it use to look like ❤ xxx
I remember seeing those individual baths, at Broadfield Road baths, in Moss Side. That was our local swimming baths in the 1960's. Also, my friend's auntie lived in one of the streets near Hulme. She told us that hot tea came directly from the tap. We believed her. Of course, it was just that the pipes were so bad.
wow, I feel so sorry for those people living in such a depressing era. The area looks so run down and depressing.. nothing to be proud off ..
I've heard about the old Hulme from my mum because her dads side of the family lived there and she remembers going as a little girl. They were Charlie and Mary Mountain and their daughter Winnie. I remember meeting my great grandma once when I was little, she lived on Mancroft way, just near the Mancunian way.
In reference to the Leaf Street Baths, if anyone has a photo of that end of Leaf Street, I'd be very grateful. My Great Grandparents ran The Bath Tavern, at 108 to 110 Leaf Street opposite. My Grandfather (Victor Carlisle) was born there 1919.
We got moved out to Hattersley and my Gran got moved out to Wythenshawe. I have distant memories of starting nursery school at Mulberry St and sleeping on cots and getting a bottle of milk, also mum taking us to Alexander park to go fishing with our little nets.
as a young lad my family on Warwick st junction of Emden st i remember going to the paper shop to get my victor comic happy days
I preferred the Rover & Adventure comic!
1959 through 1961 i used to go to the procter gym , it had a trapease , stage , sqash courts , 5s court
