  • This video explains my preferred method for using BTI to treat my plants for fungus gnats. I have found that soaking the mosquito bits and then watering lightly with a highly concentrated liquid to be much more effective than sprinkling them on the soil. It's especially great because you can treat your entire collection in the same day.
    Step 1: soak 1 or more tbsp of mosquito bits in water for 24-48 hours
    Step 2: transfer the concentrate to a watering can and add a splash to each of your plants
    Step 3: repeat weekly until gnats are no longer present
    This has worked really well for me and I hope it helps you turn the tides against the fungus gnats in your collection! Links to the mosquito bits below.

    Been fighting Fungus Gnats for months after bringing in an infected plant from Aldi's (Note to self, treat all new plants as they are infected). Had them eradicated with mosquito bits and glue traps but unfortunately brought one infected plant inside and started the breeding cycle again. By the time I noticed a gnat go into my nose it was too late, they were everywhere. Back to treating again and will try your more concentrated approach.

    This is true. I let the top dry out and now those f'ers decided to move to the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. I have currently put 2 inches of sand on all my pots and its reduced the gnats by like 95%. I'll be doing this next to see if i can get to that 100%. I tried neem cake tea too but after a while my house started to smell strange when that evaporates. As far as the drainage holes I made sure to block that off with a terracotta tray and sand as well. It will be difficult of course to tell whether the soil inside is dry or not since the sand will dry off very quickly so you'll have to get an idea of how heavy the pot is when its watered vs dry.

    LOL, I dont want to annoy them. Correct they just migrate down. I also make a concentrated mix for a day or two.
    This time around I notice them coming from underneath the pots. Upon investigation they're thriving in harmony from the drain holes so I put my mixture in the reservoirs as well. Just watering from top and having vermiculite as top dressing did not solve the issue. I still noticed an abundance of adults on the sticky traps and in the vinegar water mixture.
    Best wishes for all the plant Mom's and Dad's.

      Same here…I think I have found about every mistake or problem in gardening. And I used to think gardening was “get dirt, add seed, put in sun and water =success.” - works sometimes, but mostly not quite,
      But the good side is that each time the problem occurred, learned the solution, and if you try growing the same kind of plant 5 times….you can usually see every version get better and better as you correct the mistakes and the plants do better and better.

    I absolutely hate the sticky traps! I invested in indoor bug zappers manufactured by Xiamen Laiken Lighting Technology. You get a 6 pack for around $40. They’re easy to clean, work as nightlights emitting a blue light that attracts gnats and kills them. I do use mosquito bit tea to bottom water for five to ten minutes every plant I can. I only top water with the tea plants I have to. My plant first aid kit contains mosquito bits, Neem oil, rubbing alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide. 😉 Thanks for the great video! ❤

      This stuff won’t kill the adult gnats! You can use sticky traps for those. The bti will chomp through all the larvae so that eventually there won’t be anymore adults flying around. I always did an application 1x week for 3 weeks and that usually takes care of it. You can also release hypoaspis miles which are amazing beneficial insects as well 👍

      Simple easy solution and far less confusing than this video:
      •saran wrap wrap
      •Jar (anything really)
      •tape or rubber bands.
      •Apple cider vinegar
      Pour a few ounces of vinegar into the cup/jar, place the plastic over the top of the jar and make the seal tightly to the point it stretches. Next secure your seal with tape. After that use a toothpick and poke roughly 10-15 holes into the plastic. Be sure they’re not too big tho and also space them out. This little trick will also captures fruit flies in days!! The more fruit flies around the house the more cups you should make to quickly rid them. The strong oder of vinegar will attract those little pests creatures. Enjoy!! Hopefully my directions were clearer.

    I've thought maybe after using this product, let the plants dry out a bit, but have a decoy pot of wet soil. This is so you can feel confident that any adults in the area will lay there instead of in your dry pots. Then, you take the decoy pot and put it in the oven on 450° for 72 hours.

    This is what I would do based on your info. Tell me if I'm far off. If the potted plant soil is already moist and does not need watering, then spray evenly (enough to penetrate 2 inches) with the strong solution (2 heaping tablespoons/quart). If the soil needs watering, then drench until it comes out the bottom with a weaker solution (4 tablespoons per gallon?). Apply weekly. Thanks. TO ADD: I also spray neem weekly on my leaves for aphids & leafhoppers/mold. NEVER had these overwrinter issues until I skimped and used Miracle Gro PM in my last pot-up and now I'm paying the price. Come back months later, if you see gnats crawling around inside the garbage bag, throw it out. I did this with the Miracle Gro to be sure MG was the issue and when I looked inside the garbage bag months later, there were gnats all over the place!! To get the adults - Get a couple of bottles, put some fruit smoothie in the bottom, civer the top with cling film and tape it onto the bottle around the edges, pierce a small hole in the top of the clingfilm and leave the bottles around your plants. They will go into the bottle and cant get out, cider vinegar is rubbish, it barely does anything in my experience.
    Mix diatomacious earth into the first couple of inches of soil. Kills the eggs.
    Use the mosquito dunks to water when watering day, but if not then use a spray bottle to spray the soil. Kills the larve.
    And of course yellow traps to catch the adults and check how bad the infestation is.
    You can also use neem oil mixed with water and a bit of washing up liquid in a spray bottle to treat the plant on top, it deters the gnats, and is also good for other pests like spider mites.
    Ive had to do all of this previously to get rid of the little twats.
    Provanto is also oretty good but obviously a chemical treatment, but it does work, use with caution tho.

      I frequently let mine sit for about 48 hours and it seems to work well. It is totally safe for all of your plants; BTI is a specialized bacteria that only attacks fungus gnat larvae. It will NOT have any effect on mealybugs or other pests at all.
      The mealybugs are white, fuzzy, and don't really move at all. You will see them on the plant. If you see anything flying around, those are not mealybugs.

      As far as I know, it isn't possible to use too much, there just becomes a point where we are wasting the material. I don't know where that exact point is but I prefer to mix it up strongly and get the job done!
      Your plants don't need to be fully watered with the concentrate I recommend in this video. You can water them all normally and then just use a small amount of the mixture. That's the whole point of making it concentrated - so you can safely add some to all of your plants without fear of overwatering them. I use this on all plants in a single day, whether or not they need water. Then I can repeat again a few days or a week or so later. If you're going to mix up a full gallon then it doesn't need to be this strong but I don't think it's possible to harm your plants!

      It won’t hurt your plants. BTI is a selective microbial insecticide that targets fungus gnat larvae specifically. I don’t mess around with this stuff - I throw 2 massive, heaping tbsp in my 32 oz jar. It’s way more than enough, but that’s what I prefer! 😂

    • @B01
      @B01 2 года назад

      @@TheOracleMissy my point was if it's harming them they can fly away from it. DE when used correctly probably has lots benefits (heck I even use it in all my growing mediums at 1-2% volume) but flying bugs is not something it's designed to prevent or control. A whole host of other insects and pests yes but fliers not so much in particular. BTi is bae when it comes to gnats. Yellow stickies are what is commonly used with high success for the adults. One reason being any sort of top dressing and you are rinsing the DE down into the medium where adults don't go, only the larvae stays underneath the soil surface from what I know. So unless you are constantly top dressing the de dust won't be physically present to work. Not to mention if you have fans positioned properly providing adequate airflow on the leaves/tops of your plants it will just blow the DE dust everywhere. Plus all this leaves out the issue of many organic growers not wanting their soil completely dried out to not harm the beneficials within, and we all know DE is rendered useless when wet and must be dry to actually work. If you let the top dry out, don't have fans pointed at ur plants and no airflow then maybe a top dress of DE can help but since it's a dust and I'm assuming we are referring to indoor plants I'd highly recommend to majority of ppl to use sticky traps. Just my 3 cents lol

    • @TheOracleMissy
      @TheOracleMissy 2 года назад +1

      @@B01I lay a thin layer of DE on top of my substrate so when the gnats crawl around on it, it's essentially like walking through glass for them. The DE is effective in cutting them up. I seen alot of dead gnats the on top of my lids the very next day after laying down DE.

      You will need to use more bits for each batch of this liquid. The goal here is to get all of the bti to release via soaking and so after you use it all up, the bits should be pretty well spent. Will it be just as effective if you bottom water your plants will this only be effective if you top water?

    • @JohnDennery
      @JohnDennery  2 года назад +2

      I don’t think bottom watering will be nearly as effective. Most of the fungus gnats will lay eggs in the topsoil and the larvae will live in the top couple inches. I have no idea how much the bti actually travels through the pot but I’d guess that they will be more effective when watered into the top layers of soil.
      I have occasionally seen fungus gnats fly out of drainage holes though so bottom watering could help a bit but I think watering from above is the way to go. But you could experiment and be everyone’s hero! 🥳

      Sometimes they do come back months later but that’s much better than letting them constantly grow in number! It sounds like the solution I use is quite a bit stronger. I’m using 2 heaping tbsp, probably equal to 3 or 4 tbsp, and soaking those in a 32 oz jar. So my solution might actually be 3 or 4 times stronger than what you’re using. But yes, pest control is part of plant care and I don’t think it’s every truly finished. But it certainly helps to treat your plants at the first sign of invasion! Good luck with yours 🙏

    •saran wrap
    •Jar (anything really)
    •tape or rubber bands.
    •Apple cider vinegar
    • toothpick
    Firstly pour an ounce or two of vinegar into the cup/jar. It don’t need to be measured out scientifically or nothing. Next grab a piece of seran wrap to place over the top of the jar. Be sure it goes over the jar tight to the point it stretches. Next secure your seal with tape/rubberbands. After that use a toothpick to make 10-15 holes into the seran wrap. Be sure the hole’s aren’t too big tho and also space holes out. This little trick will also captures fruit flies in days!! The more fruit flies around the house the more cups you should make to quickly rid them. The strong oder of vinegar will attract those little pests creatures. Enjoy!! Hopefully my directions were clearer.
