*Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi (1922 -- 2011) was an Indian vocalist in the Hindustani classical tradition. A member of the Kirana Gharana (school), he is renowned for the khayal form of singing, as well as for his popular renditions of devotional music (bhajans and abhangs). He was the most recent recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, awarded in 2008.

There are countless very talented vocalists that practice Hindustani classical sangeet, and they do so very admirably. What makes Pt. Joshi's music stand apart is its steadfast refusal to be counted with any other prevailing style, school or gharana. While his training with Sawai Gandharva and other Kirana masters would have undoubtedly formed the mould in which his formative musical ideas were cast his journey into the world of music was a journey of discovery, driven by his own ingenuity and illuminated by his own creativity. Unlike some of the other masters of his time who strived to replicate the musical ideals of their guru in every nuance, every murki and every pattern, Pt. Joshi chose to let his music grow and take form, without the support of the scaffoldings in which it took birth. While it was seeded in the tadition of Abdul Karim Khan and Sawai Gandharva, it was not their music that he sang. In the forest of the musical giants of India in the twentieth century, it stood apart like a majestic Banyan tree, independent, self-contained and entirely unique. Listening to the drut bandish one cannot help imagine Pt. Joshi back amongst us, living his life which was merely a reflection of his music. Simple, indigenous and distinct.

vibhu agarwal The drut bandish (by ''Manrang'') is a Joshi favourite; he has sung it on many an occasion:
      Shyam bajaye aaj muraliya,
      Ve apno adharang guni so
      Jogi-jangal-jati-sati aur guni-muni,
      Sab nara-naari mile,
Moha liyo hai, ''Manrang'' kar ke.
      Happy to help! :D

Immortal and devine music; pathos, sense of dedication that constitute the mood of this rich raag comes to the fore that keeps the listeners absorbed and even cry at times.
It takes you down the memory lane of his lively and unforgettable concerts.

Many thanks Mr. Wajid ! I have heard him live few times. What a voice! No words to describe. At the same time his voice is feast to ears + range command due to years of riyaz . I was lucky to have heard this cheesa live in one of his concerts around 1977- it is forever etched in my mind.

Thanks a ton to Mr. Wajid for this divine upload. (Y) This is Joshi at his peak, indeed, and Yaman was something he sang with a different kind of love and fervour.
Vibhu Agarwal has expounded the beauty of Pandit ji's singing so very beautifully, one cannot thank him enough. :D The drut bandish (by ''Manrang'') is a Joshi favourite; he has sung it on many an occasion:
    Shyam bajaye aaj muraliya,
    Ve apno adharang guni so
    Jogi-jangal-jati-sati aur guni-muni,
    Sab nara-naari mile,
Moha liyo hai, ''Manrang'' kar ke.
The oldest recording of this bandish on RUclips is a 1960 Madras mehfil and the latest would be the grand old man renderring it in 2005 (at 83!) ''with the power that would make any younger vocalist green with envy!''

      :)
Joshi is my favourite artist from this field of Classical Music. Right from the dramatic hand gestures to the masculine voice production to those voyages in the higher octaves where his voice acquires a different texture altogether - everything has had a powerful impact on me. His alaapchaari is beyond compare and to hear him in his prime is an experience of a lifetime. I re-listened to this entire recording and how I wish I was there in the audience to appreciate the man as he performed live. Thanks again, Wajid saab, for the precious upload!
