The rate and sheer pace of advancement by Hyundai / Kia / Genesis is absolutely mind-blowing. I liked the previous Kona but this new one is even better; aggressive styling without being over the top, amazing tech and LOVE THE BUTTONS! Lookin at you Tesla - never a fan of going through a menu to find a simple function when a button will suffice. Keeps you focused on the road.
Best looking Hyundai to date. Love how it has family resemblances with other models in the range without being a cookie-cutter shape. Hyundai Kia are doing a fantastic job with their design. For me, the perceived quality over camera seems to be better than that of the Ioniq 5. I really wasn’t impressed with the interior quality of that when I first sat in it.

The current Kona is already such a great EV, and this one looks like it is multiple steps up. I really hope they don't hike up the price much, because that was also one of its strong points.
Dirk, I don't think the price will increase much as this is a very competitive segment and they need to keep the price well below the Ioniq 5. They also need to compete with the Bolt EUV which has the US tax credit available
Ooh, I love the new look of the Kona. Great vid Ginny 👍 The boot looks a lot more useful than the old one. That trick with the parcel shelf is good, but it’s not new, I’ve had it on various cars over the years
Another great review. I don’t like this standardisation on 10-80% charging time as it’s different based on battery size. Maybe time to add 100 miles or 200km?

@@chrispnw2547 Don't worry the car won't be crushed, I'm sure it will live on for many more years, but I use it for business and I sit in it for 6-8hrs / day, so before it starts to look tatty it either becomes our spare car or gets sold on. Not keen on how it looks outside, but the interior is very good. I don’t need a new car at the moment, but Depending on how it is to drive, I would seriously consider it in 2 or 3 years time.
I have the current model Kona and love it. Range is brilliant and the drive is relaxing and very comfortable. Late last year I did a drive from Manchester to London on a cold day in heavy rain with everything switched on except cruise control and I didn’t suffer any range anxiety. This new one looks even better and I can’t wait for my local dealer to get a demonstrator so I can have a proper look. Can’t wait to see your upcoming road test.
My friend has a Kona EV, and he loves it. He downsized from a Volvo and doesn't regret it. He has twice driven from Wroughton to Birmingham and back (220 mile) journey, without range worries, especially as its nearly all motorway. I will definitely look at this new one when it arrives at the dealers.
I have an ID.4 and the window switches are brilliant imho. I never accidentally put down the rear driver window when I meant to open the driver's window. The Rear button allows me to lower all the windows at once. I love the way it works.
That looks like a great car. I like all the things they've done. That said, living in Canada, I wonder when one might be able to actually get one. I waited a year for an Ioniq 5, only to be told by my dealer that the wait was actually 3 to 5 years (!). I went to the Tesla dealer, and had a new car in 3 weeks. I really hope they can supply these at scale, but a great car you can't get is just a unicorn.
Just a quick one the old Kona 2022 has a lighted charge port with a light band around the port which is quite bright, so I don't know why you would need a phone to look for your charging port clearly you have not drove and charged the latter model, the new light looks as big as your phone LED, maybe changed due to the heating feature. Still a brilliant car.
Those alloys remind me of the old soccer ball alloys off a Saab 99 EMS - definitely no bad thing. This is a big leap from the current model of the Kona.
Having the charge port at the front seems it is looking for trouble, any accidental bump and the whole charging system could be disabled. Wouldn't it be more convenient to have the port on the side? Good review Ms Ginny.
It’s a curious one. Clearly to match the Niro EV but placing it at a (probable) 38k for the long range but with “intro” level charging speeds. I love the looks and will seriously consider this from my SoulEV in 18 months time, but it’s not going to be much of an upgrade except the additional range. Still. Great looking car and clearly well designed inside and out. V2L is a winner and it’s going to do very, very well!
I prefer the charging port on the rear side because in my mind, many accidents do occur in the front and even a minor front accident would likely damage the port causing the repair cost to rise significantly.
How sad is it that a light in the charging port is "brilliant". These are things that should be in all cars automatically. Nothing brilliant at all. Come on manufacturers, give us this stuff immediately, it's basic. Love the channel guys.
Nice review. Like the focus on the practicalities rather than the quality of plastic! Design looks amazing. Those lights might get more easily damaged in a car park though? Range almost isn't even worth commenting on nowadays with these new cars but good to see full thermal management of the battery..
Definitely a nicer car and will be on my shopping list. Our current kona we really like it performs great. Yes the plastics bit hard a dark gray and the floor a but high . But as long as they improve. Currently 64kw net your saying the new one 65.4 kw net that an improvement. We regularly break 300 mile range
Great review and congratulations for travelling to Germany to do it....... unlike some who have missed so many of the features that you reveal! Such an improvement on the old model. It's a pity about the price, still too high, the shorter warranty than its sister company and the charging speed, despite it's improved charging curve. But those buttons!! Well done Hyundai for such a safety improvement and well done, Ginny, for emphasising it. Now you need to work on the government and NCAP to support such an improvement.
I still don't like the styling. If anything I think it's worse than the old one, which is quite an achievement. I don't know why people have a problem with one set of window switches and a toggle switch, It seems like a much better idea to me. It's a bit disappointing that they haven't improved charging speeds, given what you see in other brands. The interior is better in terms of screens and seats, but I prefer the more simplistic layout of the previous model. All in all, I don't think they have moved things on far enough. The previous model was a game changer in terms of what you were getting for the price, this doesn't really feel like that, but they are now limited, because it can't be as good as their more expensive models.
All the interior improvements look awesome, but to me it looks hideous now, and also why make it bigger? I would be more impressed if they made it smaller whilst improving the space and interior. Don't tell me that's impossible because it's not, look at all that wasted space at the front nose, look at a honda jazz. Why do cars keep getting bigger, my parking space doesn't get bigger!
I like 99% of it, but the charge port is still in a dumb location. Bumpers are designed to be sacrificial. Deer are all over my area and it isn't an if, but when situation as to when you have an encounter with one. Putting something that NEEDS to work properly 100% of the time in a location easily damaged makes no sense. Put it up high in the front, on a fender, rear quarter panel, or near a tail light like a Focus. Pretty much anywhere other than the front bumper.
Very awkward design. Large blank panels, oddly proportioned, lights that look out of place and too small - it has a lot of Ssangyong Rodius about it, which is widely accepted to be an automotive design catastrophe.
Did they improve the issues with the previous model ? Need a longer reinforced jack lifting points to put the car on jack stand and floor lift at same time (DIY at home) The charging door is not ideal at the front of the car - easy damage in light crashes plus side of the road charging cord will run over the hood paint. Best location is right rear side - same side as street chargers. Even Tesla got this wrong. Hyundai still puts those parking sensors right where they get hit more often on the bumper cover: when a car bumps you in a parking lot, the sensor bracket breaks inside the cover and your are in for a $300 part and 5h labor Did they replace the cheap "Rocket" brand 12V battery with a better one ? Do they still have that tiny washing fluid reservoir neck where you splash fluid everywhere trying to refill ? Buttons near the cup holders are prone to liquid splash and electric damage - make them waterproof or relocate Does the heads-up display still slides down by itself every time your park the car ? (can only turn it off) Are door and center console arm rests still as soft as construction bricks ? On first generation Kona, the fabric seats comfort was very poor, leather ones were good Is there more knee space for the front passenger ? First gen the glove box sits 2 inch from knees Another problem with all Hyundai and Kia is brake pads are too tight inside calipers and seize if car is used in rust belt area such as in Canada, pads start wearing very fast and are hard to remove from the caliper My suggestion, wait 2 years before purchasing any refreshed Hyundai/Kia models. They always have issues with new production - non necessarily big issues but sometime issues can be annoying and before Hyundai get a software fix or the improved parts
If I had a family, this would be the car. Love that it has no piano black, seemingly all physical buttons too. I predict the only flaws to be the charging speed (10-80% really should be 30min nowadays) and the price. I'm skeptical if they can price this competitively to Model Y RWD.
Looks like they have addressed a lot of the issues of the previous model which I have on lease. My only criticism is the slow charge rate. They should be able to offer at least 135kW like their competition, the MG4 and ID.3
My 205 HP 2019 Kona rated at 275 mile range gets easily 300 miles in city driving and I am absolutely not trying to drive normal but little more dynamically…
I don’t have an electric car. I took an ICE Kona for a test drive and thought the ride was very harsh. It will be interesting to hear a review of the handling on the road. Looks like the Bayon crossed with a new Kia. The interior looks great. When will we start to see really good cars at a more affordable price?
Interesting car. I currently drive a Hyundai Inoniq 38k Premium. The new Kona could be my next car as it slightly bigger than the old Kona. Hyundai’s achieve amazing efficiency. If the new Kona can achieve 300 miles on a full 65kWh battery that means you could expect at least 4.5 miles per kilowatt. I would take that.
Better looking than the IONIQ 5 IMO --- nice color too, at least in the video's flattering illumination. Great looking interior and functional. As long as there are no technical glitches and not too pricey , this EV will be a winner .
Yes love it, have only had my new Kona Ultimate 3 mths though. Too early to change just yet. Just wondering if power increase is enough to cope with the extra weight!!!!!!
I’ve had my Kona E for 4 years tomorrow and I haven’t had any problems except for the charge port door freezing up occasionally in our Canadian winters….it’s the most enjoyable car i have ever owned. I can see all the upgrades to the 2023 model making it the best small EV on the road. Behind Tesla, Hyundai come a close second in EV manufacturing.😅😊
Great review, thank you. The new Kona sounds like a very good car, however, it's biggest problem is the price of the MG4. As it is for all the other ev car makers without exception. At the moment only MG seem to have grasped the reality that there are still millions of people driving around in ICE cars that they bought second hand for a few hundred pounds because that's all they could afford. Until ev manufacturers understand that people cannot pay even £30k for their cars the type of aspirational car that the new Kona represents will still only be affordable to a relatively few people. Interestingly, Tesla seem to be starting to do something about this and are making huge reductions in price right across their range yet I haven't seen a motoring journalist report on this so far.
I love the interior of the new Kona Electric, it is very divisive. I'm undecided about the exterior of this car however especially the front end. it almost looks like Hyundai took a leaf out of the Tesla model Y & model 3 front end a bit fish like.. I suppose the look could grow on me though I could get used to the divisive front end..it is unique.. I also think that having the charge point ou the front of the car is somewhat divisive too. if one should have even a slight front end collision It would make charging the car somewhat difficult looking at you Kia with your new Niro EV.
Out with the audio issue…actual buttons to control things thank the lord…👏👏👏👍 While I may never buy the brand - Hyundai are just doing it right especially with the warranty side. Keep it going and let’s see what they do next.
Refreshing to finally have a vehicle with a common sense interior. No wide screen TV like centre screen. Could never understand the fascination with them. Especially if you can't use a phone for obvious safety reasons but you can to adjust anything on a touch screen. Not quite sure how it will stand in court Especially as all designs have to comply with legal regulations. The car certainly looks good.
I sat in the new kona at the fully charged event in Harrogate yesterday, A massive improvement over the old one in terms of quality. A car I would seriously consider for myself now where as with the old Kona, I wouldn't have.
Except driving in freezing rain conditions will make it impossible to open the port on the front of the car. I know it, because I own an Audi A3 etron PHEV and many times had to forget about trying to open the port and just drive using gas till temperature rose above freezing to let me open it. Gas filler port is in the correct location in the back facing side on the passenger side. This always opens!
Interesting insightful review of a car we are seriously considering once our Niro EV contract ends in Oct 23. Look far better than the new Niro but its price is likely to put it in Tesla territory and will certainly be an issue for us. If it is a Tesla or Kona, then Tesla are likely to win out.
Heated charge port is nice. Mine does have a light but any winter weather I have to either chisel the door open or scrape out the port to close to door after being out charging all night. Remember 300 EPA miles is combined range is about 10-15% less on the highway due to speed losses so that's 255 real world highway for the first leg of your trip and then you only charge from 10-80 so you lose another 30% off of the original 300, so another 90 off the top or down to 165 miles. That means on any long trip you are stopping for at least 40 minutes after just a shade over 2 hours of driving.
Definitely like the re-design. Really improved it. As long as the price is truly competitive, then I think it is brilliant. In general Hyundai & Kia are looking miles better than VW brands. Their design department is vastly improved..
Can someone tell me about charge costs please? I have a 7kw home charger for my plug in hybrid but if I make the change to full EV costs are important. A 10% to 80 would be interesting. Seriously thinking about this car, it looks great in the showroom
First thoughts: I like the design direction they're going in. It's nice and different and the interior is premium and functional. But a couple of thoughts: Those headlights positioned low and on the corners are going to be expensive sacrificial lambs in gentle parking scrapes... The charge port in the front is always in danger of damage in a front end shunt... The rear has shades of the original Fiat Multipla crossed with a Chrysler PT Cruiser... And the daytime running light/bar: are they permanently on at the back as well as the front? I've lost count of how many cars I see bimbling along thinking their lights are on because they can see the DLRs gently illuminating the road ahead and the digital dashboard is bright, yet they're completely unlit from behind; why don't manufacturers make DLRs operate at the rear as well as the front? And why don't drivers just leave their lights in auto mode...?
Very, very disappointed they totally mist what is the most crucial need for the next evolution in the electric car world, it’s fast charging, Hyundai should have increased the charging speed and gone to an 800 or 900 volt architecture. I totally love the new look design, but unfortunately will be looking elsewhere with my next car in 2025.
I love those light seats it makes the cabin feel light and airy, vw really have hot things wrong with the Id range, I’m a big golf fan had a mk5 to 300,000, and a mk 7 with 150, 000 so far both with lighter colour interior but the id range try’s to hide it from how boring it looks , Hyundai and Kia have got it bang on with there interior design, digital physical controls perfect the only thing I wished the sunroof could open , but the manual sunshade it great idea
I think they peaked with the previous design, this ones not for me. The Kona is my current fav EV though and I might be able to get a second hand one in 1-2 years.
I like the interior, exterior not so much, the old one looked better. I like that the drive selector stalk is at the wheel and the center console is smaller
Love it. If it comes to Motability then it’s certainly on my short list- my extra reasons for why it might be good for wheelchair users: charging point at the front ( so I can maximise space on driver side when parking up to let me get my chair out without then blocking a charge point on the other side of the car - which would happen with MG4); not an enormously intrusive centre console ( so I can fold my wheelchair up and get it on the passenger seat); nice boot space so when travelling with my partner she can chuck the chair in the boot. All in all looks great!
I really like the interior with all those physical buttons rather than touch screen options. Perhaps it is just the shock of the new, but it looks to me like Hyundai have borrowed the ugly stick from Kia and given this car a damned good thrashing with it 😆
What car in the Kia range is Ugly? None of them are ugly. I agree the front of this new Kona is not great but all the rest of it looks good but the best view of it is side on definitely.
@@sharonec5419 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. OK, I'll concede, they are not as brutally ugly as this new Kona, but to my jaundiced eye the EV6 looks a modern interpretation of what designers in the 1960s thought a car of the next century might look like. It's just a bit too over styled. Just my personal opinion, your milage may vary. Peace and love.
Headlights in the corners of the ..bumper... great idea. Sorry fanboys, but it looks like a shoe. Let's make it look different so that it's not like the Teslas out there, all look the same. Good size frunk... just stick a plastic tray in the "engine bay". This review is struggling so much to make the most basic features look smart or groundbreaking. And ending with a positive, charge port in the front, useful when charging at the Tesla supercharger network.
I would be interested to hear how you think it compares with the Niro. I’ve been delighted with my Hyundai hybrid and beginning to start thinking about my next car, either stick with hybrid or go fully electric. I regularly have to make a journey of 220miles, since Covid I’ve got into the habit or driving nonstop so ideally I would like an electric car that could cope with trip.
It shows you don’t get a lot of snow in the UK. That charge port on the front is horrible. I can’t tell you how many times snow has snuck in around the gap and prevented it from being opened. Adding weather stripping has mostly fixed the issue but I still struggle at times. They need to move it to the back to protect it.
A little disappointed with that charging time would hope to see it improve by more than 5 mins and I find myself on the fence regarding the boxy shape. Everything else looks like a slam dunk.
My wife and I bought TWO 2023 Kona EV's. The first one late last year and it had no working interior heat. After multiple attempts to fix it, @Colonial_Hyundai recommended selling us another Kona EV. The same make, model and color! (but more money per month) Well, the second brand new 2023 has no heat either and they can't fix it! The Service Manager at the dealership literally left the building when we brought the second new car in with the same problem! Where is @Hyundai's quality controls? How can we get two cars with the exact same problem and @Hyundai Corporate thinks nothing is wrong with this. Maybe it is time for a recall? #hyundaikona #konaelectric #electriccars

The charging door is not ideal at the front of the car - easy damage in light crashes plus side of the road charging cord will run over the hood paint. Best location is right rear side - same side as street chargers. Even Tesla got this wrong.
Hyundai still puts those parking sensors right where they get hit more often on the bumper cover: when a car bumps you in a parking lot, the sensor bracket breaks inside the cover and your are in for a $300 part and 5h labor
Did they replace the cheap "Rocket" brand 12V battery with a better one ?
Do they still have that tiny washing fluid reservoir neck where you splash fluid everywhere trying to refill ?
Buttons near the cup holders are prone to liquid splash and electric damage - make them waterproof or relocate
Does the heads-up display still slides down by itself every time your park the car ? (can only turn it off)
Are door and center console arm rests still as soft as construction bricks ?
On first generation Kona, the fabric seats comfort was very poor, leather ones were good
Is there more knee space for the front passenger ? First gen the glove box sits 2 inch from knees
Another problem with all Hyundai and Kia is brake pads are too tight inside calipers and seize if car is used in rust belt area such as in Canada, pads start wearing very fast and are hard to remove from the caliper
My suggestion, wait 2 years before purchasing any refreshed Hyundai/Kia models.
I have an Ioniq 5, and I'm envious of the physical buttons inside. Finally they're listening.
My 205 HP 2019 Kona rated at 275 mile range gets easily 300 miles in city driving and I am absolutely not trying to drive normal but little more dynamically…
You didn't mention the rear wiper !
I don’t have an electric car. I took an ICE Kona for a test drive and thought the ride was very harsh. It will be interesting to hear a review of the handling on the road. Looks like the Bayon crossed with a new Kia. The interior looks great. When will we start to see really good cars at a more affordable price?
The EV Kona isn't harsh at all - do test drive it. In fact, most comfortable car I've ever owned and I've driven my Kona over 4 years 90k miles now.
I tried the ice and ev. ev much better performance on road, stability etc. I bought the ev
Better looking than the IONIQ 5 IMO --- nice color too, at least in the video's flattering illumination.
Great looking interior and functional. As long as there are no technical glitches and not too pricey , this EV will be a winner .
agree with you. just lest spacious.
The only disappointment is that the turn signal Led light was not moved to the Seamless Horizon Lamp in front to the edges of the light strip!!. 😕
I got 2020 Kona gas. Next one will be EV for sure.
Looks great, just wished the battery was LFP, would have been perfect.
The charge port door is heated on this new Kona.....
Never been a huge fan of the looks of the Kona but hooray for the selection of actual buttons in the centre console!
Totally agree.
I am going to get one of these. Very impressed with both your reviews. Many thanks Ginny and Nicola.
I sat in the new kona at the fully charged event in Harrogate yesterday, A massive improvement over the old one in terms of quality. A car I would seriously consider for myself now where as with the old Kona, I wouldn't have.
the charging point should be on the front of all cars
Except driving in freezing rain conditions will make it impossible to open the port on the front of the car. I know it, because I own an Audi A3 etron PHEV and many times had to forget about trying to open the port and just drive using gas till temperature rose above freezing to let me open it. Gas filler port is in the correct location in the back facing side on the passenger side. This always opens!
They managed to give this one a rear wash wipe. Hurrah.
Interesting insightful review of a car we are seriously considering once our Niro EV contract ends in Oct 23. Look far better than the new Niro but its price is likely to put it in Tesla territory and will certainly be an issue for us. If it is a Tesla or Kona, then Tesla are likely to win out.
Will it be able to charge in 18 minutes like the Ioniq 5?
If price less than 💷 35,000 easily best car sale of the year
Really like the look inside and outside. Only that new clean front would look much better without the charging port.
🤔
Definitely stands out among SUV models in a good way!.
Body design and style.👍🏼👌🏼😉
is the sound not synchronized, or is it just my computer?
Definitely like the re-design. Really improved it. As long as the price is truly competitive, then I think it is brilliant. In general Hyundai & Kia are looking miles better than VW brands. Their design department is vastly improved..
Can someone tell me about charge costs please? I have a 7kw home charger for my plug in hybrid but if I make the change to full EV costs are important. A 10% to 80 would be interesting. Seriously thinking about this car, it looks great in the showroom
Why doesn't the Ioniq 6 have the bumper pixels like this? Kona should be Ioniq 3.
This is a massive improvement on interior and exterior.
Damn that exterior styling is an absolute mess.
We had to buy our Kona Electric last year and love it -- but this looks even better!
White interior is a no sale for me black all the way
Kids at the back: Mum! If we're not going to Mcdonald, I'm gonna squash you
First thoughts: I like the design direction they're going in. It's nice and different and the interior is premium and functional. But a couple of thoughts:
Those headlights positioned low and on the corners are going to be expensive sacrificial lambs in gentle parking scrapes...
It’s a Kia Niro. Even the boot opening/closing warning sounds exactly the same. Interesting appearance but I will stick with my Kia.
I'm still curious how it compares to the eSoul. I've always thought the Soul was a better value.
If I was looking for a new car, I'd consider this.
It’s on Motability getting it this month
Great looking car. But sadly still way too much physical buttons on the dash.
That charging port positioned off-center in the front totally ruins the look. Couldn't they put it somewhere less conspicuous?
Headlights in the corners of the ..bumper... great idea. Sorry fanboys, but it looks like a shoe. Let's make it look different so that it's not like the Teslas out there, all look the same. Good size frunk... just stick a plastic tray in the "engine bay". This review is struggling so much to make the most basic features look smart or groundbreaking. And ending with a positive, charge port in the front, useful when charging at the Tesla supercharger network.
Looking to get rid of my model 3 and this seems possible.
I wish they change their main logo to four dots
1:53 I wonder if the Tesla SuperCharger V3 Plug will fit. At least it doesn't easily fit in my Hyundai Ioniq Classic because of the top light.
Problems with audio syncing aside, I thought this was very interesting indeed. Thanks!
Hyundai makes crappy cars.....
Ginny indicated the charging port is now heated. Hopefully this will solve the problem of ice preventing the port from opening.
