Yeah, for me; 1978 to '80, Combat Support Company, 3rd Battalion, 64th Armor...we still had the old M113's and M60 Tanks. Loved the PX, bought my first Professional guitar there. And my first Pro bass (still have it) from a shop in Schwienfurt. Watched some great bands at the Enlisted Club, when we were not in the field playing army...super nostalgic. MOS 19D10, Cavalry Scout. I wanna be young again...lol!

Thankfully Conn is still intact. Being used as a refugee camp at the moment. 1992 to 1996 2-64 Armor. I closed the gate for the last time Sep 2014. Handed over the keys to the last MP's. I spent over 19 years of my life on Conn and Ledward. Still miss it today.

When I was at Ledward, ‘73-‘75, 64th Armor was split up between 3, 3ID cities. Conn, Aschaffenburg & Kitzingen. Back then I think it was 2d&3rd Bn’s at Conn with 1st & 4th Bn’s at the 2 cities above. I was a tanker with A Trp, 3rd Sqdn, 7th Cav at Ledward. Bldg 205, 1st building on the right at the main gate had a huge eagle on the wall left over from the German Army days, but the swastika was chopped out of its claws. I could climb out my room window, sit on one of its wings with a can of Bud & watch the frauleins come in the walk-in gate. Did 27 months extended ‘all others’ tour, my first unit in my 27 year career. Came there an Pvt. E-2 and by some miracle left there Sgt E-5. My first & LAST arrest by the M.P.’s was in Schweinfurt too. Got some much needed ‘counseling’ behind the barracks by my PSG, and cleaned up my act. Retired Sergeant Major in 1999.

I have so many good memories hanging out in the barracks, gym, walking over to Ledward from Conn to go to the movie theater, taking taxis/trains to downtown Schweinfurt/other cities (amazing we navigated everything with no internet and no cell phones back then!!!). Had so much fun in Schweinfurt...met some locals that made my stay there very special. The Rock Fabrik!... took so much of my $!, but damn, it was worth it! Was there from 76-79 at conn. D co 703rd mait battalion. Spent a lot of weekends in the Top Ten disco and Bonanza. I had a Fiat 850 Sport and a red white and blue vw van. Drove all over Germany had a great time. Use to fill the van with buddies and go to concerts all over the place. Always wanted to take my family back to see what it was like. Guess I waited to long. But I had a great time while there. And met some of the best people I ever met in my life. I don't drink anymore are party like we did back then. I sure do miss those guys unfortunately many are gone now. But I hope to see them again in eternity. God bless all the folks that served in our military and those who served in Schweinfurt.

1982-1995: I was there before the McDonalds outside the Ledward gates. Before the Burger King that opened in '86 on Conn and then the Popeyes many years after that (also the KFC they opened down behind the officer's houses next the Schweinfurt Jr. High School by Askren Manor). I remember the taquitos, chimichangas & steak fajitas at the Chi-Chi's restaurant just outside Ledward (Abrams/Officer's Club). Took that shuttle bus back & forth between Ledward & Conn plenty of times. Bowled at the bowling alley out the back of Ledward Barracks & played plenty of basketball and racquet ball at the gym up there too. Watched them build Yorktown Village before it was abandoned. Bagged groceries at the commissary over by Askren Manor *officers tipped shit, it was always the enlisted guys who would tip the most (anybody remember the Dog House just across the street from the Commissary next to the day care center - - they made a mean nachos and had those giant cheese dogs). Visiting the mess hall for Thanksgiving was always a highlight. Bought comic books at the little bookstore on Ledward Barracks and then went down to the Shoppette on the opposite end to pick-up some candy. Ledward also had that sports store in the basement where we'd buy sneakers (about half-way down toward the dental clinic just to the right when you entered Ledward). Also not forgetting about that movie theater just up the block from the PX (watched a lot of movies back there). Played the hell out of the arcade machines which were just outside the barber shop before you went into the PX. Also spent plenty of time at the little library at the back of Ledward / remember the church back there too (had to do some community service there cleaning out their flooded basement). Anyone remember the "beach parties" at the Megadrom? They had that ridiculous bubble machine and spread sand all over the floors. Used to have fun at the Volksfestplatz when they would have the annual Folks Fest. In the Summer we would go up to the Sommerbad (now SILVANA) and swim in the various outdoor pools up there & visit the Animal Park in Deutschhof. I visit every year, each year it seems like more has disappeared. At this point I would say about 60/70% of the place is gone or converted (re: U.S. military infrastructure). Schweinfurt seems like a shell of it's former self. When you walk around downtown Schweinfurt you barely hear German being spoken sometimes (lots of Russian, Turkish and Arabic languages). They also just demolished the two nuclear reactor towers in Grafenrheinfeld (sort of a landmark for Schweinfurt). Too many memories to recall...

I was with C 3/4 Cav at Conn from Jan'Jun '93. I went Concurrent Travel with my wife and kids. We lived in the housing area across from Ledward. We were just a few blocks away from the elementary school and Commissary. I was supposed to be there on a three year Command Sponsored tour, however, while at Graf at the end of January, I got frostbite on my left foot that I had surgery on twice before leaving the states. That was the end of my Army career. I was medically boarded out as a SSG with 11 years of active duty.

Was stationed at Ledward 1965 to 1968, 1st Bn, 30th Inf. Assigned to HQ. Interesting to see the changes since then. My old barracks is still standing. The town of Schweinfurt has gone through incredible changes since then. Aside from the landmarks and the Main River, I barely recognized the place. See ruclips.net/video/pY5VZK1eIo0/видео.html.
Schweinfurt fell victim to allied bombers during WWII because of the many ball bearing plants in the area. Some of that damage was still visible 25 years later, and there were many townspeople who resented our presence. While many GIs got the cold shoulder when in town, I was fortunate to have a working knowledge of German and because I was born in Antwerp, Belgium. Any time I was approached by a hostile townee, I pointed out that Antwerp suffered more V1 and V2 rocket attacks than London. That usually shut them up. Anyway, here's an interesting link to the raids on Schweinfurt, one of which became known as "Black Thursday," due to the heavy losses of bombers and crews. www.historynet.com/world-war-ii-eighth-air-force-raid-on-schweinfurt.htm
There once was a GI bar called Lili Marlene's directly across from the barracks. My first night in Schweinfurt in the fall of 1965, my new roommates took me to Lili's for beer and bratwurst. There was an English rock band playing with a lead singer who had a distinctive voice and who was prone to changing song lyrics into dirty ditties. I thought he was a great singer and funny. I didn't hear that voice again until 1969 on the radio. The singer was Rod Stewart.
