You don't have to take the whole bottom down, just the end where it lays on the bed & prohibits the "V" groove from fully seating. Then machine the opposite end pad where it sits on the bed to make it level. Think 4 times & cut once.
Great job on the fitment. I would rather adapt one then pay an arm and leg for one. Pass the savings to another project. Like you said in your case there were no other options.
The one thought that occurs to me as I watch this concerns hardness. The old steady was cast so would wear down instead of the ways wearing....the new one is steel so won't that put additional wear on the ways? (I'm N amateur so forgive me if this isn't a concern)

I think it is a valid concern but on a steady rest you aren’t really sliding it back and forth often.
