By far the best review of the Kpex. Thanks!
I purchased a brand new Dewalt when my Craftsmans miter saw blew apart. I been a finish carpenter for 20 years. They bought the Kapex at work and I used it for a day..
Sold my brand new Dewalt miter saw and stand that I paid 600 bucks for to a friend for 400 bucks and dove in the stupidly expensive Festool world..
I won't go into why because unless you spend a few days with the Kapex and sanders it just seems really stupid..But I am really happy with the tools..Hate the friggin price and they just raised the price
I can give you my saw 4 ft for free to test it. Miter Saw is an old idea because has just about 1 ft cut and cannot be used on boards. It shall be retired. I invented a "Parallel Guided Power Saw" which can be seen on you tube under this name. My saw can cut up to 18 ft or more. Look at my saw and let me know what you think. My saw may replaced miter saw, table saw, and router table. It can carry also grinders, drills press, hand saw and more.
If I was in the home remodeling trade, I’d definitely buy Festool products with that dust extraction system. Definitely worth the money, it’s saves time with cleanup but more importantly saves your lungs. Thanks for the overview.
Man is this video enlightening about the features of the Kapex, I didn't know the half of it! Thanks for a great review 👌
Great job, Dave. Awesome job explaining the key attributes of this killer saw. Great video too!
Don’t love the earrings Dad, but you did an awesome job and I am not only buying a one, but saving your video so I can see it again when the saw is in my hand. Be safe and be well.
So glad you did this video - it's saved me a heap of cash by NOT buying it. It struggled through the last piece of timber, and turn the wood around to complete a trench cut? what's that all about...
With trench cutting every slide mitre saw is the same or you have to put a backing board against the fence to get the cut all the way through. This was just one way to do a trench cut, personally I always use a backing board.
dave nice video and very informative, you are one of the better video makers that festool has
Great review as usual, would be great to have on site for finish work.
Thanks for the review, ill be getting one soon.
Great review Dave. Thanks.
👍🏾 For a very well detailed review. Discovered quite a few things I never knew existed on this saw because of your video. One thing though. I don’t find that lockout feature very useful since most guys these days will probably know how to disable it. It’s probably more useful for preventing kids from operating the saw. JMO😊
Good tutorial/overview - thanks. One thing: It would be useful to know the maximum width stock it will cut.
Mikita blows that saw away . I don't need to make a price tag statement on the job site with the kapex. Just perfect miters baby! !!
Great review
Its a good saw i am using near about two years cool nice performance
Excellent review. Thank you.
That is a nice..saw. Great review !
Great Video. Very well done.
Hi Dave, great video. No need to read the manual, so thank you! Just a question, what length did you cut the hose for the dust extraction?
Dave, great review and thanks for the tight pace. It's clear that you PLAN what you want to say and show and having a camerman is a huge plus. One critique I have is with your calling the Kapex a "Chop Saw". I'm not trying to make the "Calling this a chop saw is like calling a Porsche a horseless carriage" fanboy argument. I'm suggesting that this a dual bevel sliding miter saw with the ability to make precise tenons using partial depth cuts is not a "chop" anything. but a precision instrument.
Great video, if I had the money, i'd buy into the festool ecosystem. All these negative commenters are just jealous that you are working easier then them and getting the job done right with no mess...
Good video mate. I have the 250mm dewalt xpr mitre saw at present buts it's had a few very hard years and served me well but seeing there's a shop in London selling the kapex for £850 which is $1300 I might just go for it.i will miss the xpr however
awesome stuff
Hi Dave, I really enjoyed your presentation of the Festool Kapex 120. Could you please provide us with the plans for the crown stop extension? I like that vey much. How long is it, and how did you attach it to the crown stop. Thank you, E
Maybe one day I'll be able to justify one of these magnificent tools...
Great job.
Too all thinking of purchasing one of these. Yes they cut great BUT Yes they have a lot of failures and need very expensive shipping costs to get repaired. Had mine fixed under warrantee the first time for undiagnosed (at first) problem with tilting motor left. This time it seems to be burnt out motor. Mine has been used lightly in my shop. I carry 2 dewalts in my truck and one is 16 years old. Do your research on the problems these saws have prior to purchase.
Dave, I just bought a kapex, seems like there is a lot of flex when extended, 5 times more than my dewalt. Does yours have that flex, I can easily more laser line over an 1/8" right to left.?
I read that it was rock solid, mine is not, any adjustments to look for?
Thanks for taking the time to do this review, Dave. One thing more... let's talk plastic. Being that there is so much of it, we should dig a little deeper and get past that gorgeous green. I would assume a certain level of tech behind any plastic used on a tool of this level. Do you know of any published Festool information about it? Is it fiber-filled nylon for instance, or Delrin, or....?
Very clean for a saw he uses every day
+Matthew Prevail My tools look Brandnew for their age 15 years or older, thats is the difference a de walt saw like most People say throw in at the car and thats and then say the saw cuts accurate make me laughing, there are fools and fools them self. I working with Festool Former Festo more Than 20 Years now no de walt will hold the Quality over such a long time. I have no Money to buy cheap. and one thing You register your tools From Festool,in a case it get stolen you pay i think is 100 dollar in US and you get a new one.
Don't know what BS juice you've been drinking but as an owner of a Dewalt for the past 8+ years with regular abuse I can EASILY say that it still cuts with SURGICAL precision, easily just as if not more accurate than festool and at half the price lol Don't get me wrong festool make outstanding saws but are no where near worth €1500 worth of outstanding, I'm sorry but if you've bought a festool then you're just a fool who got suckered outta his money lol.
Dom Reale I've been a joiner/ cabinet maker by trade for the past 8+ years, where fine trim work and surgical precision cuts is the goal of the day and I can tell you now the DeWalt is just as good as any Festool out there once you've aligned it properly (I've used both). Don't get me wrong Festool make outstanding products but if you've dropped 1500 on one then I'm sorry you've just gotten suckered out of your money, Festool are good but not €1500 good!
powertothebauer Just a heads up festool does not replace stolen tools in the U.S. it is only in the UK that they offer this warranty coverage.
i need this saw
great video
I can give you my saw 4 ft for free to test it. Miter Saw is an old idea because has just about 1 ft cut and cannot be used on boards. It shall be retired. Really intrigued by this saw. Would love to own one. For me its a shame its so over-engineered, makes the price a hard pill to swallow.
The rotating bevel handle (too slow for day to day trimwork). The million knobs and adjustments are great, but most of us build houses, not spaceships.
If they had one that was a bit more simplified for a more reasonable price I'd own one for sure.
Nice Video. You hit on all the features. Where do you store that little wrench for the laser adjustment? It also fits the "locks" on the fences which it looks like you either removed or lowered all the way down
There's good reason why the Festool mitre saw is a lot more expensive than its competitors - it really is far better. But I still have my DeWalt DW718 for any external/rough work where real precision and fantastic dust collection isn't an issue.
ishortland why is it better most any saw can be fine tuned and the blade means a lot so if you fine tune a dewalt or a ridgid and put a good blade on it it will make the same cut I think these high priced tools are for people who have no clue on how to work with one soon festool will make one that cuts it for you I have no money issues and will only spend more if there is a good reason and I can't find it with festool except there dust collecting but I could care less about saw dust everywhere it shows you did something lol
Hey Dave great video! where do you get your blades sharpened and how many times can you sharpen there blades as they are very pricey?
Hi Dave, learn a lot from your videos. I need your help, my KAPEX is hard to rotate/the miter. It is stiff and has gotten stiffer over the years. I have had it for 10 years. Other than that problem, I love the saw.
John
If I read the Festool specs correctly, the depth of cut on their saw is only about 3 1/2"... which means he was just barely able to cut through that 4x6. I've decided to go with the DeWalt DWS780. It's a 12" saw for less than half the price and its depth of cut is 6.75". if I only did interior trim work, I might consider the Festool, but sometimes I'm building furniture and sometimes I'm building decks. I need a saw with a little more cutting depth than I can get with the Kapex.
you used this saw every day, however, that saw looks brand new one XD
@G-Shock Jock even taking extremely good care of it just sliding a piece of wood will put scratches on the table!
great video with lots of information. but what about the blades? do you need festool blades? what variety, etc?
This is praise
What i great saw im sure if i had 1500.00 bucks i would love it. Im saving to get the planex for drywall i know im gonna love it after using porter cable for years. If you have that kind of money yes but at the end of the day the trim is up with my 500 dollar ridgid!!!
Interesting how some people commenting here simply focus on the price and that is has plastic. I resisted buying Festool for years. Once I finally did, I could kick myself for wasting money on tools that don't perform as well or last as long. Extremely accurate well thought out tools across the board. If you want to cross cut 2x4s the get a Makita or a Dewalt. This is a Finish Trim saw. It can do other things as well. The vacuums are the best in the industry. Yes They are $600. A Porsche is also more than a Mustang. They will both get the job done, one just does it better.
Well said.
Steven McGhee, ditto, and then some.
I agree, when time is money, you want something that is easy to use, reliable and accurate. You get what you pay for!
Nice.
Tips and Test.
Very important if you would like to saw with precision. (avoid torsion as much as possible)!
Always choose a Miter saw with a handle positioned in a vertical line above the saw blade.
Everything must be aligned, slide rails, handle, and saw blade,it is much better this way the blade will not tilt.
Because there is some torsion in the aluminum housing .
And choose an engine with softstart on it to prevent wear of the gear and worm shaft.
It is very important that everything is aligned.
Here are some examples to show how the handle must be positioned above the blade.
Bosch gcm 800 sj / Bosch gcm 8 sjl / Evolution rage 3 / FESTOOL KS 60 / HITACHI C12RSH2 / Bosch GCM 8 SDE / FESTOOL KS 60 E KAPEX / Metabo KGSV 72 Xact / Bosch PCM 8 SD.
(This also is the case with the Miter saw without the slide rails).
(If you want). You can test it yourself at home if there is torsion in the aluminum housing.
Step-1. First you make a saw cut from +-5 mm deep in to a flat piece of wood about +- 20 mm thick to this with the normal handle positioned on the right side of the Miter saw (the wood it will remain in place until the test is completed).
Step-2. Then repeat this by pushing the saw blade down with your hand (finger) on the aluminum protective cover were the saw blade is cased in. Just now only do this without the running engine.
Step-3. Now you can see if the saw blade will be positioned in or next to the saw cut. If the saw blade is (+- 0,2 / 0,5 mm) next to the saw cut then there is torsion in the aluminum housing (test is completed).
Step-4. therefor it is much better to choose a Miter saw with the handle positioned vertical in line above the saw blade.
Conclusion: how further away the handle is from the saw blade how more chance of torsion in the aluminum housing.(don't go for that).
Thanks for the tip... makes sense and I'll keep this in mind when shopping. I was looking at a Makita but I think the rails are to the side and not centered.
Milwaukee 304 DB ?
Which saw is the best "Festool Kapex 120" or "Milwaukee 304 DB..?"
Thanks!
i would love to get a kapex but ive also heard so many bad things about the motors burning out and such.
if you drop motor/blade on left or right side ,what max angle you can cut ,how deep ? Nothing about blade diameter ,and why only 10 "?
Is any reason why we did not see that ?
Does that camera have some kind of automatic keystone correction or something? Because it's tripping my eyes out, having trouble watching the vid. Great saw though and good overview.
Try to till saw to the left by 45 degree and after to the right and cut any timber. You will find a problem with cutting when till to the right. I moved right fence as far as I could to the right. But when i tried to till saw to the right by 45 degree fence was still on the way. If you compare geometry of the both fences you will see that right fence bigger than left. Although right bar which have adjusting handle is thicker than left one and this is restricting 45 angle setup as well.
Please correct me if i`m wrong
You're meant to remove the extra height fence completely. If you can't slide it all the way off there is a little screw that needs to be removed in order to get it off.
wow. its a bloody saw mate. Been a chippy for years and have never wanted to talk about a tool like this
LOL why are you watching tool porn videos then?
how about the accuracy of the angles? did u have to tune it or was it tuned
my bad on the image stabilization, we tried it and it didn't work well and we can't find a way to turn it off. As for the blades I use the factory 60 tooth blade I own 2 of them and send them out to get sharpened. One of the blades is over 3 years old, and still going strong.
Our shop just bought this saw. The saw will not complete a "touch-up" cut on compound miter cuts with crown molding laying flat. The blade guard catches the tip on the crown. Anyone else having this problem?
It is super
Yeah that was my Producer/cameraman on that one! I will change that now in the title.
thank you for your support!
Dave, Is there a way to defeat that switch at the Top of the Handle? My Fingers lack the length to Press that switch and then turn on the saw by pressing the handle with my hand.
do the dado can pull more right? why need to flip a wood?
confuse
Fences should slide forward for trenching so you don't have to flip it. Would only be safe at 90 degrees, but it could be figured out.
The Festool green on the window blind!
For all the people on here praising the Dewalt, How is the dust collection? I agree that the XPS light is good and they are good miter saws however they are messy. The Kapex is the ONLY miter saw made that collects 95% of dust when cutting. I can cut inside a customers house with virtually no clean up. I complete jobs quicker, cleaner, and make more money because of that period.
I cut all my miters for baseboard on edge against the fence. What is the max height this saw can cut on edge? I doubt it can cut 5" base which my dewalt dw716 can accurately and easily. Does festool make a 12" non slide? Sliding miter saws are a problem child. Too many moving parts when really you don't need them for trim. For stairs or kitchens, sure! But a tight 12" dual bevel dw716 is all I need or want. Have wide stock to cut? Cut, flip, cut, power plane if necessary. There are way too many options on this saw. More things to break.
A draw back the dust shroud catches on the fence cutting bevels and cutting at 45degrees you have to take the fence off besides that it’s a top saw
I have the Kapex, and compared to others including DeWalt it's kilometres ahead in just about every respect. It IS a precision tool, and the saw blade leaves a very clean cut every time. I am still on the first blade and its sure done some work and still leaving clean cuts on the precision work that I do. I won't be ever using anything else.
Sam Sabastian
When the motor in your kapex blows up would you like to buy mine? Mine has one barely visible scratch on the miter table, other than that it's pretty much new.
what an amazing demo of tool porn!!!! cheers dave
Where can I buy this and for how much??
I like Festool machines - really I do - my TS55 saw and OF2200 router are amongst my most heavily used machines. But the Kapex? Just my opinion - but it's eye-wateringly overpriced for what it does. So during my most recent upgrade/renewal programme, I bought a replacement 305mm DeWalt 780 (1st fix + framing) and a dinky little 190mm Makita LS0714 (2nd fix + trim work) which came in cheaper than the Kapex - for BOTH of them........
a lot of it is worth
What is the size of your shop?
if only they did a 12 in version?
Dude I work with Ridgid's, Dewalt and Bosch's depending on who's my foremen for that job site. Set up a cutting station they all get the job done day in and day out. We do mostly common roof framing, compound cuts they all do it 45's you name it. I won this saw in a raffle is it better then a Dewalt?? FUCK YES!!! Your blowing smoke up your ass if you think any of those saws are even close in comparison to the Kapex it's that good.
Can you show me how you made the wood support? Please
What the hell kind of camera were you using. Made me sea sick when the saw was sliding lol
I invented a saw 4 ft or more. You can see it here under "Parallel Guided Power Saw.
Very nice how much i mean price
looks brand new for a "most used tool" just saying.....
At that price, I'd be cleaning my saw each day as well.
Fatih S
Most used, lol
Paid £850 for this and would pay that again. Much better than the others I've ever used in the past 15 years. You get what you pay for.
Yeah this would be a great bench top, cabinet maker saw I'm sure. But being a framer/finish carpenter iv been using my Makita LS1013 sinch 2005. I've never needed my saw to be more accurate than it is. It's pretty much perfectly accurate on bevels and mitre cuts. I've checked the accuracy a few times over the yrs n never once was it off. I'm not say it's the greatest saw in the world. The bevel lock sucks lol.
Other than that I love it, never did it let me down, it's seen rain, snow, extreme cold, always ran like a champ. Dust control on it seems average but not a concern for me since I'm set up outside 90% of the time.
The odd time I was set up inside I just hook up a vacuum to the dust port.
I can't fathom taking a ,1500$ "plasticy" saw to the job site, having it bounce around my van, using it outside in the elements, with probably 3 or 4 other guys taking turns on it lol
I'd just be too worried bout it. It's not for me as a house builer, but I won't say I wouldn't love it in the shop bolted down 👍
Iv'e used both, and the makita is a piece of shit in comparison. And Plastic? It has about the same amount of plastic as the makita: The motor housing, the blade guard, the adjustment handles etc. For a "plastic" saw, it's the most solid feeling saw I have ever used. Of course you can get the same level of accuracy from most saws, but it's just so much faster and easier to get it with the festool.
ollie young
Yeah Festool has it right with their ease of adjustability for sure.
The more I watch these reviews the more I want one lol
the Eiger Advocate I watched a video some guy had up, think it was titled 7 years with the kapex. That saw has gone through hell on job sites and is still going strong. I know guys who got them when they first came out and still use them. They are lot more robust that people seem to think by looking at them.
ollie young
Oh yeah no doubt.
I believe they are amazing tools.
I think the neon green buttons make it look like a Mate toy or something lol
But I'm sure they function great
heavy use of warp stabilizer here?
Miter Saw is an old idea because has just about 1 ft cut and cannot be used on boards. It shall be retired. I invented a "Parallel Guided Power Saw" which can be seen on you tube under this name. My saw can cut up to 18 ft or more. Look at my saw and let me know what you think. My saw may replaced miter saw, table saw, and router table. It can carry also grinders, drills press, hand saw and more.
I know that some of festool tools are amazing but I can't understand why they are so expensive when u can do the same job with other tools who are way less expensive.... I am a big fan of all tools but festool cause I think each company has a down point even festool ... I am a big fan of a variety of tools from each company ..like the mitre saw I love the Bosch ... routers porter cable first and Makita and Bosch.... table saw delta wood be the best for me ..drills from bosch or makita and they are fairly inexpensive for example I got my drill set from Bosch for 1 70 $ .... and in my experience with guys who own festool tools they think that they are gods because they have such tools ... best furniture were made with hand tools and some power tools from black and Decker and the most common table saw was the Rockwell beaver ...and by the way I have a beaver Rockwell
... u only need the brain and some tools to help u apply what u have in mind .... although this saw I think it's about 3500 $ ....
Had it for about a year. Absolutely loved it. But the motor already went to shit. I’ve been a contractor for 10 years. My kapex doesn’t get used very often and stays in my shop. I’ve spent a ton of money on festool and love all the features they have but I’m not spending twice as much money for my tools to last a quarter of the time anymore. I’m pissed.
You know you have another two years to get it fixed by Festool, right? Festool has a three-year warranty.
@@chrisbellamy237
Shitty motors are what the Kapex is all about. If you have one sell it with about 2 months left on the warranty.
3 year warranty so you are covered
$1450 + тах. in store! 2x6 not cuts ?
Nice but I would never change my Makita LS1216L
DeWalt 712LX now for sale
I just bought a kapex. I've been using it for about a week and I actually hate it. I find setting miters a chore. The handle is seriously uncomfortable. You can't just pull down the blade to check a cut. You have to press the top button and the trigger to the half way point to drop the blade. I do like the bevel mechanism and it glides beautifully but it's just too awkward.
My Dewalt xps any day!!!!!
If you are going to buy one saw this is it been using one this week
on that last cut, our dewalt saw would do that cut in half the time. im sorry, but something with that little power is useless in heavy contracting. you need to run the most powerfull no questions asked. oh, and our saw also has all of thoes fetures that the festool has. did a pretty good job on the video though!
Amen 5 years later says me. I own a few Festool products ...the power is not there. They are not a good contractor choice for that reason. It gets even scarier if you take one apart very light duty shafts and bearings ...
French company "SPIT" introduce market with first gas nailer back in 1993... Now "SPIT" is part of ITW... Till 2003 Paslode was made by SPIT in France... Since SPIT becomes part of ITW, some products built in Illinoise (US) and for European market it build by SPIT in France... So, as you can see, on Paslode only three letters is American - ITW, and anything else from France...
You must work with Black and Decker then right. This saw is like a Felder saw compared to a Delta Unisaw.
Not a patch on the makita 305mm ls1214! I've used both and it's not worth the money
Hi I just bought kapex 120 last week and used it at work today. To be honest I'm not that impressed so far with it, quality to dewalt and Maikita is no better. Yes its got few nice touches like the adjuster turn knob which is great idea, but my biggest issue is rear lock clamp, when you lock your angle with flip down locking clamp, if you knock the handle like I did few times today it moves and really easy too. Is there a way to tighten is rear locking clamp as at moment its not fit for use. Hope you can help, great video
Check the Festool Owner's Group website. I've been banned from the site otherwise I'd help you.
Thank you (how much are they in dollars) and can you send me one like that
does any of this work, I do not see any news on this machine
wayyy to much almost 1500... hell nahh
$ 1500 are you serious, is that with or without Vaseline?
Memo Rodriguez Vaseline is not included 😂😂😂😂👍👍
@@johnsevillano3691
And sadly no kiss or reach around.
You must Mexican because that joke was intended to be said in Spanish. Si o no
Until they make one with a 305mm blade its not much use to anyone that works with anything other than small mouldings.
Nobody buys a 12" saw for fine work, as they deflect too much.
12" = carpenter
10" = cabinetmaker
having Metabo KGT 501-230-150 in combination with this..= to unlimited applications..
Why is that saw so clean? never been used.....
Aaron Elliott Because he takes good care of it and the tool itself with the dust extractor keeps everything clean.
What about the price dude you can buy 3 dewalt saws for that one
Kapex is not for eveyone. You get what you pay for. There are may saws you can buy at friction of Dewalt price.
