    Thanks for this, Graeme. Wonderful as ever.
    QUESTION - I had a problem in class a few hours ago when we were trying the walking backwards drill for Ko Uchi Gari. The idea was just to walk backwards, and sweep at just before Uke's foot hit the mat, but I found that I was always too out of step with my training partners to make this work. It seemed that their feet were coming down as I was still taking a step back, and moving backwards, combined with being on my heel of the foot moving backwards often meant that I was too far away for the other foot to connect, and reap. Do you have any advice?

      I recommend Both judoka take wide shallow steps and try skipping it for timing. Or just do above going slow and deliberate, partner helping to achieve credible timing. If you are too far away check your stance, make sure it is good back straight posture, and support foot should be top point of triangle when you sweep. Try adding weight to suppress and then draw uke's balance on the reap step, so they take a larger step than they would intend to. (that is on another video) Good luck

    I just started studying Judo, but I have been injured at almost every class. On my first night, we started with Osoto Gari--I have no martial arts experience. In your opinion, how should I go about training? I've been working on my break falls, but I'm horrible at them. I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

      Jason S Hi Jason;
      Yes breakfalls and rolling to gain confidence. It doesn't take long to get your automatic skills uploading the new programme (how to fall correctly) onto your computer (your brain) I get my students to do the breakfall repeatedly and adjust position to check they are correct and they auto correct their head/body/hand and leg positions.
      Dont get too much into the throws until you master the falls positioning unless you have crash mats as you risk injury and getting scared of falling, (which acts against the fearlessness that we must be comfortable with in relaxed standing fighting.) Do this training before class come early, or at home on a mattress etc

      You need to learn the difference between getting hurt and getting injured. Breaking a leg is an injury. Getting the wind knocked out of you hurts

    Could you do better camera work on these?
    You have much to teach us, why not more professional production values?

    • @JudoLife

      Yes, I can do better. It needs a step up. The pro judo refers to I am strong supporter for judo, (and actually semi pro coach.) Sound quality need the most work, a microphone investment planned. Very low budget at present am in a lifestyle not a $$$ job.

      You need better camera work.
      Shoot with two cameras mounted on tripods, and/or get a steadicam.
      There should be no shaking.
      Also, better lighting.
      Finally, the field of view is too big, human figures too small.
      We don't need to see the ENTIRE dojo in the background.

      OK have got the lights, better bring them out on bright days, will adjust this video hopefully improve it, thanks for your suggestions.

      Dude, you need to cut down the amount of space.
      Set aside a corner of the dojo for filming.
      The less depth of field, the better.
      Human figures should dominate field of view.
      Build a mini-studio for yourself.

      Also, it's a bad idea to film with windows in view.
      Possibility of disruptive reflections,
      and distracting movement in the background.

      The position of the sensei in question of the foot, he becomes unbalanced, so that when he drops for the first time is a fall "nothing beautiful to see," heel of the foot always on the ground or even there the boy would come out and "de ashi harai'', I would do it in a fight.

    • @marianacadete6190
      @marianacadete6190 6 лет назад

      in the same way that the sensei unbalances the boy, he also becomes unbalanced. think fast

      Interesting view, this technique was used by Nichida Sensei in 1984 Olympics he gained gold medal and this was his favourite throw. I trained with sensei, he threw me every day with it for 160 days, often multiple times. I am sure you can improve on my teaching, but I like this throw myself and used the side stepping version many times for Ippon in tournaments. I know the fundamentals are correct, it definitely works well.
