    I agree with the lady who will not buy from David Austin. Country Parson sb an embarrassment to send out a rose so small with a root system that is very weak. It is coming back after 'babying' for several weeks. E. Bronte is not as bad as the other but still is not acceptable. I was on hold for over an hour & finally hung up. This company has a excellent reputation why would they send out a rose like the one they sent me I can't explain so disappointed. I have bought roses from Home Depot & Lowes with no issues.

      It is always ideal to see a rose in person before you buy. Concerning David Austin roses, I only want to buy them locally from now on (in pots). That way I can see them first!

    I bought an earth angel from Lowe’s. My heart skipped a beat when I saw it. I would have bought more roses, but my garden doesn’t have much full sun exposure. Which roses would you recommend for partial sun? I’m in northern Virginia zone 7. Thanks! ❤

    • @TheRoseGeek
      @TheRoseGeek  4 месяца назад +1

      Is there a particular color you like? In partial sun, I really love planting One Time Bloomers. They will bloom for several weeks. I also have luck with Olivia, Bliss Parfuma, and Raspberry Cupcake,

    Many of the box store personnel don't know the suppliers of their rose shipments, let alone what understock they're grafted on. Pan Am is a big supplier for box stores in Ontario, Canada. Their roses are grafted on Dr. Huey understock which isn't the best for my northern climate. Most people purchasing box store roses don't even know they're grafted.

    • @TheRoseGeek
      @TheRoseGeek  4 месяца назад

      That’s crazy that they would use anything other than Multiflora in Canadian box stores!

    • @Thunderbird68-i2f
      @Thunderbird68-i2f 4 месяца назад

      @@TheRoseGeek Crazy but true for a couple reasons....First, being that Canada (especially Ontario) has a very limited number of growers that graft on multiflora understock specifically for the retail garden center and box store markets. These limited growers also impose purchase requirements and stipulations, which if not met, give garden retailers and box stores no choice but to resort to purchasing from American companies instead (ie: Pan Am). The American growers supplying the US are limited to grafting tender roses on Dr. Huey understock, unfortunately. So Canadian box stores end up with Huey grafted stock at a discount price - good for the retailer but less-than-ideal understocks for their customers.
      Second, is that customers and retail box store garden personnel, including managers, posess scant knowledge on understocks and roses in general. Roses have been branded by some people as being "the rich man's annual", lol. This lack of knowledge compells industry growers to determine what roses and understocks customers should plant. This abscence of knowledge on the customer's part also brings forth a lack of market demand for specifics. And thus, that inevitable wheel keeps turning when it comes to grafting tender roses such as hybrid teas, floribunas, grandifloras and David Austin roses on Dr, Huey understock. Hence, the "rich man's annual" continues to be very good for business, LOL! 😅
      A caveat for experienced rosarians/horticulturalists working at garden centers that sell grafted roses is that they cannot disclose to the customer that the roses they're purchasing aren't budded on the ideal understock for their climate zone, given that sales is the bottom line. Dr. Huey rootstock will survive cold climates, however; its canes will kill to ground level over winter whereas multiflora's will not. Tender varieties can get by on Huey, though; multiflora gives more vigorous and optimal results in my experience.

    That's quite a haul you have there in your car. Will these replace roses in your garden or do you have new planting areas for them? It would interesting to see a video on why the ones that are being replaced didn't make the grade.

      Great question. Someone else just brought that up.
      If someone had planted the soil mixture that came with the pot, it would indeed have been a problem for many soil types. This peat mixture wouldn't retain water and would prevent the rose from getting the water it needs. I wish I had thought about that more in the video and I am so glad you brought that up.

    • @TheRoseGeek
      @TheRoseGeek  4 месяца назад

      Yes. That would be the first choice to look for 3 or more canes. Good luck!

    Hi, Kim, I'm going to tell you something: Never again I will buy bare root roses from David Austin, this season was my first time and last, I am completely disgusted with myself that I've paid $35 for each bare root rose I got from them this early Spring and 1 even already died (Gabriel Oak), while at the same time, I bought from LOwes a bare root rose, Sunbelt Savanah a month ago($20), planted it, and it's so strong and growing strong and beautifully more then ANY planted from D.A. I'm totally disappointed with D.A and in awe with Lowes bare root roses.

    • @TheRoseGeek
      @TheRoseGeek  4 месяца назад +1

      I am sorry your DAs didn't do well. I too have already lost one this season. It looks great when it arrived, but quickly died. I honestly don't know what happened.
      I am so happy with the roses from Lowes also and hope that Star Roses brings more varieties to us locally!

    Interesting…… failure to recognize that peat soil mix might have led to an “under the radar” planting mistake by creating the soft pocket that can lead to winter freeze had the plant just been dropped into the planting hole might it not? Just wondering….

      Excellent question. Star roses is trying to move to Own Root when they are able. I actually didn't check these before I put them in the ground.
      I know that doesn't help if you are looking for Own Root. I will try to look at them when I am out next and will make a note to talk about them when I do the spotlights.
