Wentworth Woodhouse: Off Limits - Bedlam |

It's true that Wentworth Woodhouse has over 300 rooms, but we often say that there's nowhere to put anything. That's because so much of the site is currently derelict and unuseable.
Over 20 of those derelict rooms are in the Bedlam Wing at the House. These were originally used as bedrooms for unmarried male visitors and visiting male servants. Today, they're empty spaces, badly affected by water damage, dry rot and general neglect. But there's so much potential here!
We're always saying that we have a House with over 300 rooms, but there's nowhere to put anything. Our 'Off Limits' videos will show you exactly why that's the case and why every penny that we raise for this iconic site is so important.
We'll have more extended looks at other areas in the house we've shown in our shorts previously, as well as some new 'Off Limits' areas coming soon too.

Are there any photos of the interior of bedlam when the Fitzwillam family still lived in the house?

Not as far as we know, but we've not yet fully catalogued all of the items in our own archive. It's possible that some images do exist and we'll share them on this channel if we find any.

Bedlam is the south wing of the house and was used during the time the Fitzwillam family in the house as guest accommodations for single men and their valets and could get very rowdy hence the name “bedlam”.

We show where in the House this is at the beginning of the video. Bedlam is the wing to the south of the House, used as guest accommodation during the time the House belonged to the Fitzwilliam family and was accommodation for students during the Lady Mabel College Days. It is now a mostly derelict space, though some rooms are used for storage.

Bedlam used to be a place in the eighteenth century, a large building in London where they kept people we would say had serious mental illnesses. It was on the site of the current Imperial War Museum.

Bethlem Royal Hospital
is and was since probably the 14th century a mental hospital in London. It ganed the nickname Bedlam which was then used as a slang word for chaos , perhaps through usage in 17th century plays. The hospital still exists, not on its original site.
