    I had really soft water and no reading on the GH or KH water test kit. I added bags of crushed coral in my sump. Worked a charm. Now and then I add some crushed eggshells too, directly to my Yabbie tank. Raised my PH as well as added calcium to the system.

    You mentioned in videos that having too much calcium can affect other nutrient uptake in plants and having too many carbonites in the water can also prevent PH from going to the optimum 6.2 to 6.4 range. How do you measure the carbonite concentration in the water? I'm from the aquarium hobby and would like to know where you find the best balance of carbonites for growing produce and keeping fish in your systems. Thank you!

      Just maintain a stable KH of at least 4, you can use potassium bicarbonate to achieve that.

    Hi, great video as always. We are growing mostly lettuce in our system, but they are pale and a lot smaller than the ones we planted in the soil, would you have any suggestions? Thanks

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  10 лет назад +1

      Usually, when lettuce is pale, and there is plenty of sunlight, it's a nitrogen issue. Test your nitrates. If they're low and you can keep your ammonia in check, I'd bump up your feeding to get a little more nitrogen to your plants. Good luck!

    Have you seen or know who may have seen how it would be applied with positive results at all?

    • @ZipGrowInc

      Hi Jeff Letendre that's just calcium carbonate, which you can use in systems with low pH. If you have neutral pH system, I wouldn't recommend it. Good luck!

    Does calcium chloride hurt fish in small quantities?

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  2 года назад +1

      Good question. Chlorine in small amounts can be toxic for fish. Calcium nitrate (PureCal) is a great substitute for calcium chloride when working with fish. However, make sure the fertilizer packaging states it’s “ammonia free” as ammonia is also toxic to fish.
      Fish are able to handle low levels of nitrates, but higher concentrations of nitrates may harm them.

    hi calcium hydroxide is hard to get where I'm from but calcium carbonate is more avalible white lime. Can I use calcium carbonate to raise the ph and if so how much per gallon I would have to use and must I also use it 50/50 with potassium hydroxide to keep the potassium and calcium at balance levels thanks.

    • @robinkazi8849
      @robinkazi8849 3 года назад

      yes, it is recommended to use 50/50. You can use CaCo3/white lime.

  • @molanas
    @molanas 10 лет назад

    I have well water and it's extremely hard ...like 11 and comes from the tap at 7.4+ ph and a little less if it has rained a lot. 250ppm cal/mag if I remember correctly. I maintain the system around 6.4 (6.0-6.7 being low or high). My ppm meter reads between 700 and 750. I alternate my pH up with hydrated lime or potassium bicarbonate (earth juice). I started using the EJ as a buffer and pH up until I saw your video suggesting using hydrated lime. My carbonate hardness would fall to nothing if I didn't add anything. I have been unable to test actual levels though. Do you see any issues with anything or give any advice to ward off issues?

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  10 лет назад

      Wow. That's hard water. Honestly, that's workable but only in a very old, mature system where you aren't topping off significant volumes. I will say that if your system is running down into the 6.0 range without adjustment, you're probably ok though. If you do have tons of calcium in your source water though, I'd recommend cutting back on the amount of calcium you're introducing regularly. This is assuming that what you're doing now isn't working. If your system is running a nice pH range (6.0-6.7) and you're not seeing deficiencies, then what you're currently doing is probably ok. Is your ppm meter measuring Ca specifically, or is it a general measurement?

    • @molanas
      @molanas 10 лет назад

      Just a general measurement. I have been adding a mixture of RO and well water to top it off. I haven't seen any noticeable change in my water hardness though. The test strips are always on the max. Been doing RO water for about 4 months or more. The only deficiency I have at the moment is sun. Are there ways to test for individual nutrient levels? I am planning on expanding the system into a greenhouse with much better sun exposure and probably 2.5 times more sqft and 4 times the volume with high roof. Many of my plants are really reaching for light so my fruit production has been limited. Supplementing light has helped but not enough still. Have been relying on southern sun coming into first floor windows. That is now quickly diminishing. Thanks for all the videos. I have learned so much and it has definitely given me the confidence to spread the word. Overgrowing the current paradigm!

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  10 лет назад

      aquapontif Ok. Well, if you have a bunch of built up carbonate in your system it may be dissolving back in, but I really think that that's unlikely with a pH of 6-6.4. If you're not seeing deficiencies, I don't think you probably have a problem. If you have access to RO, continue using it, and work on that light! I'm really glad that our videos are useful to you. Thanks for watching!

    Speaking about supplements, I saw in another video a suggestion to add trace minerals into your system as a way to have healthier fish, plants, and food for the family. I believe in taking supplements on a regular basis, to include trace minerals, for a stronger immune system. Have you heard of this and what do you think? Will you actually be intaking more trace minerals from your veggies if you add them into your system? Will the plants retain the trace minerals, making them even healthier for people?
