  • Some know the history of June 27th as it relates to Houston culture and some even know that Jermaine Dupri originally made the beat for Kris Kross his group in the early 80's. JD explains the history of the beat to the iconic Houston anthem and how it was created.

I'm from the old school and I took a moment to read all 96 comments and I couldn't help but notice one very important thing was left out...JD DIDN'T ORIGINALLY COME UP WITH THE BEAT!!! Look up The Romantics-Talking In Your Sleep. For years I told people I think all the variations originally came from this song. When they heard it, they agreed. I've always said it was relooped. I took it as confirmation when Heit The Great made an upload about it. I thought JD would have mentioned them, but he didn't. I like all of the variations, but June 27th was in my opinion the pinnacle and nothing can top that.

@digitaltrademusicDJ Michael price and Darryl Scott are the founders of slowing down music since the early 80’s the entire idea came from our car culture back in 83’ and how folks in Houston ride slow on the streets. Where ever you heard in 85, definitely was already founded before 85. Thats what made Dj screw start Dj’ing in the 80’s before he left smithville tx and travel to Houston to link with the founders and created chopped and screwed music in 91’

It's the ones who smoke blunts witcha, see ya pictas, now they want to grab they guns and come and getcha! Fun Fact about Screw, his main talent as a DJ would be blending 2 songs with each other at the same time for a long period of time, in which alot of DJ,s didn't do back then, and still don't do. Jermaine is leaving out the huge missing piece in his breakdown of the June 27th version. Screw actually put some of his talent inside of his version. He put the Notorious Big Warning sample as a hook while blending the warning beat a tad bit inside of the Kriss Kross. That's why the June 27th version sounds completely different from Jermaines original version. Screws version sounds crazy slowed down with the Biggie sample in it. He was definitely ahead of his time with putting his own spin on it, because alot of people still think to this day that screw only used 1 beat for June 27th.

K, im a have to go back and listen to the original Kriss kross version, because the June 27th sounds nothing like their version in my opinion. Im not sure if Screw manipulated the tempo in a certain way, or just looped a specific part of the instrumental to give it a different feel compared to the original. But Screw practically enhanced that beat to a different level than what the original sounds like. That's the entire reason why we have RUclips videos like this discussing June 27th. The sound and feel of it is just waaaaaay different.
