Moraine losing her powers at the end of Season 1 so that she gets something to do and a different character arc in season 2 dealing with stuff without her abilities feels way too close to Yennefer's arc in the Witcher series. Characters losing powers have been done to death already. It is going to be very repetitive and boring. It is just a sign of the showrunners have no idea what to do with those powers so they just go the lazy route of removing them entirely for a while.

Then again Moraine probably hasn't been stilled, only Shielded with it tied off. One of the forsaken did it to another forsaken in the books. So she'll only be without power until someone can work out how to remove it.

It's probably tied in with the whole Moiraine Lan Nynaeve love triangle. Nynaeve is the one who heals something like this later, and given the scenes with Lan, it's clear she's going to feel some reluctance to restore the warder bond. It's a more subtle Perrin's wife setup, to make one character feel guilty by harming another one.

I had not read any of the books but I was mostly impressed by the Season One and this video is mostly helpful looking at the eighth episode which is also the finale. It was conclusive but it was not as painful as it could have been for the characters. There was a lot of time invested in Moiraine Damodred however the Wheel of Time Prequel book that I am close to finished reading has her as the main character in that book. She does have a knife to the neck of the Dragon Reborn which was her mission to find but the group of potential dragons were not very interested in saving their own skins. The Ogier died without any fight too. The reason why Egwene was restored to life was because nobody cared if she lived least herself. Putting that aside it was still a lot of fun to watch. I really liked it.

  • @Seanbsxxx

My first thought is: I think the reason that Ishamael was smiling was because he wanted Rand to use that much power to "Destroy him"... Not because it "killed" him, but because doing so cracked the seal over the Dark One's prison, thus making it easier for the other Forsaken to escape, as well as the Dark One, eventually. Secondly, we've seen Logain being stilled and it wasn't the same animation with the one power that Moraine experienced from Ishamael. In fact, it looked more like he cast a shield over Moraine and "tied it off", which is something the Forsaken have done in the books. Someone strong enough could use the One Power to untie Ishamael's shield on Moraine eventually. As for season 2, I'm hoping that Thom Merrilan finds Matt and leads him away from the Aes Sedai, hopefully towards wherever the others end up, so they finally reunite. I expect it to be the Western coast, where they get caught up fighting the Seanchan.

I think "Sean B" (the OP) is exactly right about the reason for Ishamael's smirk.
One reason for this belief is that it fits perfectly with the show's agenda to make almost all of the guys into incompetent bungling (or useless) idiots.
For example, the only thing good Rand accomplishes in the last several episodes, perhaps the only thing since Episode 1... is to be Egwene's friend. Other than that, he's been useless... except (probably) to crack the seal.
(Likewise, Perrin, Mat, and Loial have also been useless, except for Perrin killing a few Trollocs in Ep1 and Loial with the Waygates. BTW, Lan is an idiot, too, because "You've killed us all." Moiraine to Lan at Shadar Logoth.)
I disagree, however, about Moiraine... I think she got STILLED... which will set up the chance for someone to heal her... I'm guessing Egwene.
This is consistent with the show's other agenda to turn Egwene (and to a lesser extent Nynaeve) into Mary Sues.
(Ex. - both being MOST of how the Trolloc army at Tarwin's Gap was defeated, and Egwene apparently healing death itself. The latter is being a MEGA-Mary Sue. Additionally, Nynaeve rescued herself from a Trolloc, fought off Machin Shin, apparently healed some dead Aes Sedai after Logain killed them... and Egwene rescued both herself and Perrin from the WC's.)
Of course, IT IS POSSIBLE that Moiraine was simply shielded... which would be better writing... BUT the writers are absolutely LOUSY, which is just another reason that I think Moiraine was stilled, not shielded.
Season 2, I expect, will be at least as much "The Moraine (and Lan) Show" as season 1.
In turn, that means less screen-time and budget to spend on our main characters.
Adding the Seanchan is just going to make things even more complicated, which means S2 will probably be even more of a crap-show dumpster-fire than S1.

    • @fy4b230
      @fy4b230 2 года назад +9

      @@Concepcion30 yup. Exactly.
I try to shut out my book mind when watching this adaptation. So I understood what they were going for…5 women channeling together with 1 of the women being Nyaneve who is basically the equivalent of a nuke in magic power take out the army and Rand, the DR, takes out what is supposed to be the Dark One/Big bad. Even though the dark one tossed Moraine aside like a puppet and seemed to be playing with Rand, although I loved his smirk they showed when Rand “disintegrated” him..it just felt underwhelming.
I liked how they foreshadowed future parts of the series with that dream sequence “battle” where Rand had to decide between what future he wanted, but it took away from showcasing his actual power and since we haven’t seen much of his power up to this point it came off as, again, underwhelming.
I think they had the right idea with what they were trying to portray, just really bad execution. Easy fix would’ve been Rand chipping in to help the women, unknowingly when he unleashed his power on the dark one. They even foreshadowed that he would have to “defeat the dark one” to save his friends and fal Dara from the trolloc army by Moraine straight up telling him that lol. Missed opportunity.

    • @icecream3265
      @icecream3265 2 года назад +15

They made a right choice to give a trolloc army nuking to someone else. In the books Rand carried finale solo. He defeated bad guys, teleported to battle and nuked trollocs, defeated main bad guy in lightsaber duel. It was confusing and extremely epic in the same time but other characters were basically doing nothing. The TV show isn't Rand driven as much as first book because they decided to follow later books which have a lot of different main characters so they had to give some finale moments for other characters. Also, minor spoiler, Rand is going to get some other moments to display his insane nuking powers very soon so overall for TV Rand's arc it should do better with this change.
The decision was right but execution was a disappointment of course. While scene of temptation was very good I felt like finale ass blasting of Dark One was somewhat lacking. Maybe it's intentional because it isn't exactly victory but it should invoke some emotions other than "that's all?"

But the reveal has happened now (also in a very anticlimactic way), and the DR channeling a Sa'angreal against a top-tier Forsaken should have been epic in scale, not a pretty green light. There were battles in the book with two other Forsaken that could have also been done nicely on screen, but they weren't even there. All the shock value reversed deaths in the first season will come back to bite them later, too, because it's tough to take any deaths in the show seriously now. This episode fell really flat.

Robert Jordan said it best when Rand was talking to Matt telling him that it’s best to leave storytelling to Thom because Matt keeps adding to and changing the stories. He says that the originals are better and he can’t do them justice like Thom. Maybe Rafe should have read the books so he knew Robert Jordan wouldn’t have approved this shite.

If you watch the bonus content on Amazon Prime, Rafe is a huge fan of the books, has been since he was a teenager. He explains why he had to make some changes, saying that a different media needs the story presented in a different way. Robert Jordan's widow, who was also his editor, seems to be on board with the path the showrunner is taking.

@@dalemoar3006 but where is the story? Everyone actually agrees that it’s too much to bring anything approaching a 1:1 portrayal of the books. But there isn’t a single scene from the books in the show. He’s changed the story completely. If that wasn’t enough to cancel Rafe from this project you can factor in all of the issues the story telling is creating on its own, like 5 untrained women defeating the largest army to ever decend on Tarwins Gap vs the camp full of trained Aes Sedai and warders getting trounced by a small army in the woods… or how Padan Fain ended up with the dagger and it wasn’t mentioned by Lan or Moraine that it was missing…. Or that stabbing Loial with it was a certain death sentence but we’ll for sure have him back next season because so far this season it appears that our main characters can keep dying but then get miraculously healed and are just fine. Rafe’s biggest accomplishment is making the final 3 on Survivor. If you really want to understand the motivations behind how this was handled look into Jennifer Salke and the agenda she has for Prime Video. She’s like the Sith Apprentice to Kathleen Kennedy.
This show can’t stand on its own merit let alone come close to doing justice to the one true source, Robert Jordan’s written word. It should be cancelled and go back on the shelf for 20 years until everyone forgets this attempt and the tech will be able to give us the actual story RJ wrote for a fraction of the cost. Or do a good animated adaptation, like Arcane did.

    Warning! Book Spoilers:
I think Moraine is fully stilled (and not just shielded as some people have suggested), and if true I think it's actually a clever way to handle adapting what I've seen as a major problem between book and show: Moraine being captured by the Eelfinn and disappearing for the better part of 8 books. This story line creates a number of issues with the show, but the one I was stuck on was there was no way they were going to remove Rosamund Pike, arguably it's biggest star and main character, for 2/3's of the series and then just have her re-appear 2 episodes from the finale.
However, if she's in fact stilled, it allows her character to remain fully in the story while nerfing her ability to be the magical warrior. This comes with the added benefit of being able to axe the entire Eelfinn/Aelfinn arc (or greatly minimizing it). Frankly, adapting the finns was going to be a _nighmare._ Removing them takes very little away from the overall story (there are plenty of other ways for Matt to get his powers), while avoiding having to dedicate precious screen time to what non-book readers will see as coming completely out of left field.
We learn that stilling can in fact be healed, and that women channelers who are stilled have diminished powers, just like Moraine after returning from the land of the Finns, so I think this could make a lot of sense. For a minute, I thought they might even have Moraine take over the role of Cadsuane Sedai, but since I've seen the suggestion (and in fact Rafe Judkins apparently had a Twitter convo with her about it) that Cadsuane should be played by Shohreh Aghdashloo I'm _firmly_ against that.

I thought the last episode was the weakest of all the episodes, although episode 1 was also rough. For a supposed last battle it was disappointing, so let's hope there is more coming. The writing is weak and the character development is lacking, it's hard to care about these characters when we didn't get enough time to. This season needed a few more episodes. Also, there's so much telling instead of showing.
Some of the changes are fine but most of the deviations from the book are too under-developed, like the dragon being a man or woman was a good change, it created a lot of tension between the characters but I think it needed more time to really work. Especially between Rand and Egwene.
I don't know why Rand didn't have more dreams leading up to the last episode, especially with Moraine telling them to tell her if anyone spoke to them in their dreams, would have been an excellent plot device but it was underused.

    .
Liandrin is revealed to be a darkfriend in book 2. Moiraine says to Liandrin in episode 6 that she knows Liandrin has been meeting with a man in North Harbour. This is also the same scene where Liandrin reveals that she knows about Mat. I think Liandrin had a meeting with Fain, got that information from him, and smuggled the dagger out of the tower to him.

@@Tomy-im8zl for sure. One example would be episode 4. At least 7 well trained Aes Sedai (along with all their warders) had a very difficult time fending off maybe 50 or so attackers yet in episode 8 a girl that was sent away from the tower because she couldn’t channel more than a flame (Annalise) and yet she was able to weave a link between 4 untrained channellers and wipe out an entire trolloc army (5 ties the size of the largest army every to enter Tarwins gap). Another example would be when Nynaeve blamed her hate for the tower on the fact that her mentor was supposedly turned away from the tower because she was poor yet the Amerlyn Seat is a poor girl from Tear.
There are other examples. It feels like the writers team doesn’t have someone on the payroll whose job it is to watch for continuity.

      @Tomy-im8zl 2 года назад +7

@@squiggs928 I hear you and I would like to answer it, but feel free to tell me if those answers do not satisfy you enough.
      1) When the Aes Sedai were attacked in the forest, there is supposedly an army, so even though it might have felt like 50 soldiers we should probably assume there was at least 500, especially because their king was there.
      2) There is also the element of surprise. They were attacked on many fronts, in a forest, and were not prepared at all, while against the trollocs, she had the time to prepare for the attack and it is also very much implied that she needed some preparation for this move.
      3) Nynaeve is considered to have the strongest chanelle power/connection than any aes sedai and the other girl (forgot the name sorry) who also seems to have special powers was there so isn't it possible that Annalise was able to be that strong just because she had access to their powers? I mean we see that the white power coming out of those 2 girls was way thicker than the 2 other women there.
      4) Regarding the Nynaeve blaming, the first time I heard it I felt like they were just gonna address that the reason for her mentor for not becoming an Aes Sedai was misleading so we could realize later it was not because she was poor, but another reason. Maybe she did not really want to leave her family, or she lied... and I felt like when they show Siuan’s story it aims at showing that her mentor was not rejected because she was poor. Unless they don't mention it in the following seasons, I would not call it a contradiction yet, I mean Nynaeve could just be mistaken/misled by her mentor.
I'm not saying this series was perfect, but I jut feel like as long as there is the possibility for a non contradiction hypothesis we should go for it because after all, it's still a fantasy/science fiction and not a documentary. But if you have others contradictions you'd like to bring, I'll gladly give my idea if you are interested.

@@Tomy-im8zl I absolutely love a respectful debate. Good on you for choosing to be respectful. I’m happy to engage. 🤪
1 & 2 together….. let’s say you are right and there were 500 attackers. The Aes Sedai set wards around their camp and they would have not been surprised. They said there were wards in the show but they wouldn’t have been a last second warning kind of thing from some of the most senior Aes Sedai in the tower. They also had a compliment of Warders. These are not men who get taken by surprise. Also, the editing of the show did not convey distances well enough. Where was the fight? It didn’t appear to be in the camp yet they were taken by surprise? And lastly… even with your suggestion that there were 500 soldiers…. The army of trollocs was at least 10,000 strong. Nynaeve even suggested 20,000…. These numbers don’t line up with the abilities of the participants.
      3. Nynaeve is the strongest female channeled since the breaking. She is forsaken level. The problem with Annalisa is that she never learned to channel like this. The weaves she threw at the trollocs were extremely complicated. Well beyond the training she would receive as a novice. Not that the show bothers to require people know what they are doing with the magic.
      4. This last one I suppose you could use this logic to explain it yet based on everything else in the show I suspect that they will just continue on and never bring that up again.
New stuff: why did Moraine take only Rand to the Eye. The only info she had to go on was him telling her that he is the dragon. Based on what? He can channel sure, but so can Nynaeve and Egwene… he didn’t have anything else to base his confirmation on. So why should she?
Do we really expect that a man like Lan, a battle hardened border lander who has been a Warder for 20 years travelling with Moraine, wouldn’t know that she had a tell? And how did Nynaeve track that tell behind an army of Trollocs who would have disrupted the trail and then there is the little issue of the trail entering Shadar Logoth. She somehow followed the trail into the city and then out the other side? How?
When Suian was a child she already knew how to channel? And her father let her take a 1000mile journey on her own because ‘a fish can’t touch the moon’? Another opportunity to make fathers look bad… kinda like what they did to Matt’s family (although that’s a book comparison and maybe shouldn’t be in this particular debate)
How did Padan again get the dagger? Last we saw in Episode 7 it was in Lan’s possession. The dagger is a huge plot device in the story. I’m lost as to its importance and delivery in the show.
What did episode 6 have to do with the show? The Amerlyn had a dream so they were going to throw 5 kids at the Dark One and hope that they were right? We needed an episode for that?
How did Padan Fain travel the ways when they clearly set it up that you needed to use the source to open it. Again on the Ways.. once the gate was opened, why could they not just reopen the gate to get Matt back. If Moraine thought he might be the dragon then they would have needed him. He got pissy so she just gave up on him? Seems like if she had been searching for the Dragon for 20 years and she had a Taveren in hand she wouldn’t walk away from him based on his snippy attitude.
Valda is a strong enough character to kill several Aes Sedai. How many rings were on his chain. Perrin gets free and he turns into an absolute pussy and then they don’t even give the kill to Perrin… Egwene gets the credit. The deviation from the books in this particular circumstance is really disheartening but I’ll let you read the books to get caught up on that one.
Sorry, I’m typing on my phone so I’m having a hard time going back and forth on your post. Let me know if I missed any of your points. 👍

Caemlyn becomes a bigger part of the story about half way through the series. Elayne will be introduced at the White Tower where she will meet Egwene and Naynaeve and become friends. I went into this knowing that if they did 22 episodes per season, they could only really do justice to the books in at least 10 seasons. With only 8 episodes per season, there was no way for that to happen. So I sent aside most of what I knew from the books and tried to just watch it as its own thing. It still felt rushed and there are a lot of things I knew at the end of the first book that I "don't know" at the end of the first season, and some things I know at the end of the first season that I didn't know at the end of the first book.
It seems to me that show runners would do a better job if they stopped trying to make each episode some grand, sweeping, effects-laden mini-movie so they could produce more episodes per season. They drop so much character development for the sake of spending large amounts of money on effects and that has a negative effect on the story itself. I can sink more into the story if I better understand the characters and the situations they're in than I can if there are just some spectacular visuals.

Started with the show, which is good, following up with the audiobook in progress which will no doubt turn out better as a story
But what I think some critics of this show and other shows like the Mandalorian fail to grasp is that you have to limit the show (episode counts, episode lengths, effects and expenses) if you are marketing some thing to compete with the other Netflix priced streaming services, otherwise your one show would cause the monthly service cost to jump to $50-100 or more in a market where half the audience expects to pay less than $9.99/month.

    • @Salinz
      @Salinz 2 года назад +1

The issue is not that they had to limit, cut out, or change details. It's that the writing is bad. The world is not internally inconsistent and they have made changes which are FUNDAMENTAL to the story. The show has failed to explain why the dragon is to be feared because they did not want to explain the difference between the male and female half of the source. It's so bad that they actually said that Dragon was supposed to submit to the source to be able to control it. In the books that's how women control their half of the source, if a man does that he will be instantly killed.

He not only introduced Perrin to the wolf world, but also shows Perrin that he doesn't have to lose himself in it. Changing how the waygates are opened using the one power, means only channelers can use the ways, which were originally made for the Ogiers, who don't use the one power?? The last episode was very disappointing. Egwene doesn't know anything about healing. Loial and Uno( the guard with the patch) dying?? In the books, Loial is there at the last battle and Uno accompanies Rand in the hunt for the horn and dagger. In the books only the dark one can resurrect anyone.

With the deaths, what I'm wondering if this is the writers' entree into the use of balefire, which (canon) undoes events that happened before its use (the more you use, the further back its use undoes time). With Loial and Perrin dead (I thought also with Moiraine being stilled or shielded till you brought up next season's plot arc were (canon) she visits the retired but scholarly Adeleas and Vandene) a way to undo all of that was for Rand or someone to discover and use lots of balefire. Although he'd have to learn and use it pretty quick. Please the Creator, they'll get back to telling the story Jordan actually wrote for the second season!

I reached the 12th book last week and all I can say about the tv series is : SAD.
-> They didnt explain the male and female half of the one power.
-> And why would Moraine take Rand to face the Dark Lord as soon as she finds out. Would you throw a teenage boy who doesnt even know how to use the Saidin, who the whole world is dependent on, to the Dark lord without any training and preparation?
-> She gives her angreal for him to use. Completely beats the whole point. A male chaneller cannot use the angreal of female chanellers. And because men have been banned from chanelling male angreals are hard to find.
-> Introduction of Travelling. Moraine travels to siuan sanche for their "making love" scenes. Any sort of travelling is unknown otherwise why would Moraine bring them, on horseback, from 2 rivers instead of just making a gateway?
-> Creating this confusion that Egwene could be the Dragon reborn. The Dragon Reborn will be a man because the Dragon was a man and because of his fight against the Dark one, the male half of the power was currupted. Thats why the Dragon reborn is destined to go mad as he will wield the tainted saidin.
-> Not giving the whole story as to why the Dragon fought the Dark one. He was not ambitious or corrupted. They were losing the war. This was the last attempt to seal his prison. If not for this they would all have lost. The women didnt help them and they lost because of it. If the women had helped it wouldnt have been 100 male chanellers against the dark one. And women can link and increase their power but men cant. Men can only link if there are some women involved. Because the women backed out the men fell weak.
Oh I can go on and on and on. W0ke culture really really messed this up. If anyone has read Robert Jordans books he has given equally important roles to the men and women. If men have more power then they have a weakness. They cant link. wheras women can giving them equal if not a better footing. The entire plot would have collapsed if each charachter hadnt done what was necessary, whether it be men or women.
Edit: Also, Last and the most egregious. They killed LOIAL!!!!! and Padan fain killed him with the dagger. that dagger absolutely rots the person and the person marked by it dies horribly. Becuase Loial was killed by that dagger, he cant be brought back( even if the writers do some wierd bs).
This shows that the person writing the script doesnt know shit about the book.

Pretty sure Paden Fain got the dagger from a certain dark friend encountered in Tar Valon. Don't wanna spoil it for non-book readers.
While it's not perfect, I have to cut the showrunners some slack. Having to deal with COVID and losing a star part way through filming must have been a nightmare.
I think Perrin has as supposed to help Lan track down Moiraine and Rand in the Blight and Mat would have confronted Fain at Fall Dara. Also, the battle would have probably been much better without COVID restrictions forcing them to do rushed CGI.

I've been completely engrossed in the series and am eager for Season 2. I'm hopimg the poor editing will be addressed and corrected: first season jitters and Covid-19 could explain this season's poor editing🙏🙏, The acting, costumes and scenes have been outstanding

@@squiggs928 but no adaptation is an exact rendering of the book! LOTR, DUNE, FOUNDATION. NARNIA, COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. 3 MUSKETEERS. Not even the Hobbit or Harry Potter series. None of these books are chapter or verse exactly as written. It would not be visually possible or practical. As long as the SPIRIT of the story is maintained. That's why it's called 'adaptation.'

@@carolbriscoe9337 Nice. Your use of all caps and then how you cleverly insinuated that I don’t understand English was very effective. I’ve definitely got a better understanding of the type of person on the other end of this one.
Please tell me who ever said we needed or should have gotten a 1:1 adaptation? Nobody. Of course changes need to be made. But the thing is, all the examples you gave DID* give us a faithful adaptation. This has not once been true to the characters Jordan wrote. And even if you take the books out of it you are left with a show that needs a lot of help in writing and producing. The contradictions they are creating that they will need to fix is getting longer and longer. Add in Amazon is forthright in their drive for more ideological content. Their CEO of entertainment is the Sith apprentice to Kathleen Kennedy. Rafe has said he is changing the content to reflect his version of what the world should look like. He is open about this. He’s threatened to turn Perrin and Lan gay to piss off a fan of the books. Yes the guy was an asshole but Rafe is supposed to be a professional and when they knew what he was doing and Amazon backed it they should have been prepared for the shitstorm they were going to call on themselves.
Try watching any of your examples again and tell me how many things in each you can trace directly back to the written word. If it’s anything more than the names of characters or places then you’ll have proved my point.

I liked the show very much, it goes to show there's still interest out there to see a new type of Epic Fantasy. You're right, it's light when it comes to lore and world building, but strong on characters and production value. I'm sure there was a lot to consider and while us book fans can't have everything it's just great to see an adaptation that's taking it time get up off the grounds and most definitely improve for further seasons. Ignore the haters as they're not contributing to anything meaningful but bitch and moan.

I enjoyed the first season more than I thought I would. However I don't like the idea that people who die or are dying (like Lan bleeding out after Stepin attacked Logain) can be revived or "fixed". It takes the tension out of it. Feel like plot armor is a little too thick. Killing off main characters and smartly subverting expectations, like the early season of Game of Thrones, makes for a more interesting series. Hope I don't see too much more of this in season 2.

This is how media is made nowadays. Marvel resurected literally half of all people (which anyone with a brain knew was going to happen) and people praised them for it. Just watch 90s movies or movies made by people over than 50.
