Your hair is FAR too long to START with add on hair....I'm glad you figured that out. I use a double strand of yarn at the ends to do it....works out great and doesn't cause extra weight. Shamed to admit it took me several pulled or stressed neck and shoulder muscles to figure that out.
I'm going to try this tomorrow!!! I bought 5 packs of hair, so I'm going to make the parts a little smaller!!! Thank you for sharing.. Much love to you and the fam :) BTW you ROCK..
It's amazing that people are saying go whit what a great tutorial and still moaning about how to moisturise, and take down. Ermm have you heard of cutting the ends off and unravelling??!! Or spraying the roots with your favourite moisturiser? You've done a fantastic job at making faux locs light weight and quick style for many people who would have never tried before. Thankyou for taking the time to create styles that actually work.
Well some of us have never usef synthetic hair in our entire lives, so no we haven't heard of doing those things. That's why we ask hair gurus we trust, like nap, to help us understand.
Although I'm relaxed and not ever planning on getting locks :P , I always watch any hair video you put out. I really appreciate the work that goes in every video, always detailed, informative and clear. Love it
Whitney you are a genius. One of the reasons why I never tried this hair style was because of the amount of hair you would have to use. It just sounded too heavy & time consuming. Your method seems much better. Changing the natural hair game! Now I can't wait to try it.
Ugh I'm late! I was so concerned with updating my google cover art I'm 45 minutes late to the viewing! Let me shut up now and watch! Oh my goodness, that's frightening you had an allergic reaction to the hair. It wasn't that confusing, it was no E = mc^2 or nothing! But you have to be thorough so no one blames their failed faux locs attempt on you. All that hair is just mind blowing. I would make smaller sections because if I were to make my twists that large with the amount of hair I have, I would be left with about 10-12 locs....when was the last time you've seen someone with 10-12 locs?! Look at that smile on your face...ooh, what you make for dinner?! Never mind this isn't a vlog I have no right to ask that question. Wait what were those words in your hands...oh long layers, whew, no subliminal weirdness going on (not saying you'd do that!) This is really COOL and Fabulous Whitney, a good way to achieve a new look without committing to locs and it's one HECK of a protective style! Great tutorial, 2 thumbs up, thanks for sharing and enjoy the rest of you day...whew! Awe love the shout outs...oooh I see my 3/4 pic on the tweets, I recognize that rim of the ear anywhere, thanks girl!
This looks beautiful on you Whit.. but GIRRRRR~L *lip pop+smack*.... I am SOOOoo scared of what the take down of this would look like on my hair after I have slept on it for a week. Will you video the take down?
clarissainjapan Hey Clarissa! That is a good question because I thought about how the synthetic hair might intertwine with our hair after days or weeks of wearing them.
Wow, I love the way this looks! I don't think I'd use synthetic hair, though. This process reminds me of African threading. I think I'll try that one day when I have the time! lol
I have locks but I really appreciate this video. I had a very very similar experience to the one you had when I was installing faux locs (or for me, loc extensions) a couple months ago. I almost finished and I thought "hell no, this is too heavy and too stiff!" I'm definately looking forward to trying this method. Question though - could I use acrylic yarn and do this instead of synthetic hair?
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, the top of the loc by my scalp is tight, and the bottom where I light is tight, but the middle area keeps unraveling and becomes loose but still attached because it's already been lit. What am I doing wrong? Am I not pulling it tight enough?
+Ku'ulei Dow I think what you should do is first leave like a half and inch to an inch of space between your scalp and the twist so it's not so tight, for the twist to stop unraveling you should twist it tighter, and lastly for the ends it just depends where you mean...like where you attached the synthetic hair for length/something to burn or the end of the synthetic hair where you burned it
Oya's personality just melts my heart. She's so goofy! I love how she repeated no car wash! Lol You can tell she lives her grandparents too. The look in her eyes when she was talking to your dad.....priceless. She's going to be so family oriented. Loved this vlog!
Now I've seen MANY-a-faux locs tutorial. This is by far and most likely will always be the best one! They're flexible, light, varying in length (as most real locs do), and only use four packs. All of the other tutorials I've watched have results that are super thick, heavy-looking, shiny, and there are too many - making them look super unrealistic. If I weren't in the Army, I'd use your exact method to do some! Great job! That look really suits you.
Hi Whitney!!! When working woth synthetic hair boil water. After you twist, lock, or even braid your hair. Section your style into four section. Dip your twist, locs, or braids in the hot water to make them loose and weigh less as well. Be careful Make sure you have a towel to grab the hair out of the hot water. Hope this helps for next time :)
This is why you're da realllll hair guru ... honestly, I did the typical installation method for the faux locks and I was like man, I don't think Ill ever do this again ... this video has given me hope. Thanks Whitney
I've grown fond of locs over the past few years, but not fond enough to loc my own hair, so I'm grateful for this alternative option. This is a must try, much appreciated
You posted this at the best time ever!!!!! I always wondered why all the tutorials on faux locs required braiding with synthetic hair first and then wrapping...its just too much hair!!!!! plus its way too heavy. I'm so glad you posted this video....God sent
Loved it! I was just talking about doing these next summer after I'd seen so many beautiful faux locs over the summer back home in Jersey! Your dedication is such an inspiration, and so much motivation Whit! I have to get on my game lol muah!
Welcome to the wonderful world of loc's, Whitney. You were them well! I have had loc's for over 17 years, they were flowing around my hips. I recently had them cut because the length was pulling at my hair at the scalp and they were breaking off at my nape. I still sport them in a short hip bobbed style. I love your tutorials but I am especially addicted to your family channel, Olivia has stolen my heart!
@naptural85 can you give us an update on the dreads, like how long did you leave them in for, how was your hair after you took them down, would you do this again? Also can I suggest a video tutorial?... if you do it again can you show us how to crochet dreads in?... now that I'm thinking about it, your hair might be to long to crochet. Lol thank you for this video
I absolutely love all of your hair tutorials :-) I'll be celebrating 1 yr of transitioning 3 days before Thanksgiving and watching your videos has made me love the choice to go natural even more. So, thank you and please keep the videos coming. Be blessed :-)
I keep watching this video lol. It's GENIUS! It's another one of those moments while watching your videos where I'm saying "Why didn't I think of doing that / that way" LOL!!!!! This is why I love youtube LOL. Planning my first attempt at faux locs. I hope mines come out to my liking (fingers crossed). Thanks for sharing!!!
OMG, Thx!! I did about 1/4 of my hair the standard way & it was so heavy & painful. I pulled it out the next day. I am so happy I found your way. I'm doing it over now!!
This is sooo smart. I never thought of it this way. I always worried about the weight about hair. This helped me so much I will definitely try this now. Thanks xoxo!!
I have faux atm and I love them. It took 11 hours to do them but was definitely worth it. Instead of two strand twisting my hair, I braided my hair. I used deep wave and Marley hair, crochet the two types of hair through each braid and completed my faux locs.
OMG! I am so glad you posted this video. My hair is as long as yours here, and I was having a lot of trouble with finishing the ends without burning my hair. The tip of braiding the end with additional hair has just saved my style! Thank you! ugh!! Thank you so much!
I love how you've came up with a solution to stop the itching from synthetic hair! I haven't worn regular braids or weave in my hair for yeeeaars because it sets my scalp on FIRE! So the only braids I do are yarn braids since i can still keep up my co-washing regimine with them and you don't have to worry about them slipping off (plus no itch) but I think I may try these! Have you washed your hair with these in yet? Do they slip any?
Whitney, you are a life saver! I'm so lucky to have found your channel years ago because you have helped me immensly. I've wanted to do faux locs, especially now cos of the winter but I had no money to get it done professionally, and now I can do them myself with this amazing tutorial! Thank you so much.
I like the fact that you have fun with your hair. I may give this a try I always wanted locs but my hair is 3a 3b and curly so I didn't think I could loc it so now I'm extremely happy that I can do this. Tfs.
sheilayoyo Matted hair =/= loc'd hair...technically only people with curly/afro-textured hair can naturally "loc" their hair. White folk with straight hair do a lot of unsanitary things to be able to loc their hair--including not washing it.
AbbieThrills Ma'am anybody regardeless of race can naturally loc their hair. It just takes longer if their hair is straighter and more fine. Anybody hair can become matted. Also, it's not a stone cold fact that white people don't wash their hair when they're starting the locing process even more than black people don't wash theirs so it doesn't unravel It's always up to the individual. Don't negatively generalize a whole entire race by saying that, It's rude and ignorant as fuck.
keyla965 No, they cannot. And as a Jamaican with family members who are Rastas...it makes me supremely uncomfortable seeing white people co-opting locs and participating in cultural appropriation. Everyone's hair doesn't naturally loc. Matted hair, backcombing, putting wax in, not washing one's hair to "loc" it...is not natural loc'ing. I didn't know that saying white people do unhealthy things to loc their hair is "generalising an entire race." I wonder if my "generalising" is making life super hard for white people. I wonder if they're getting denied jobs, gunned down in the streets and locked up for being generalised as not being able to naturally loc their hair.
you are a genius Whitney, also noticed the difference in using just your hair underneath and now i'm going to do the goddess locs with your technique of adding the curled/wavy synthetic hair to the ends of my hair instead of the whole hair...you are just wonderful God bless you
Thanks Whitney, I'm going to try this as soon as I take my mini braids out in two weeks. I tried the first method and I experienced the stiffness, and they were extremely tight.. I didn't finish. But you have giving me a new outlook on faux locs. I going to use yarn which means I can complete this style for less that 5 bucks...I can't wait! Thanks again Whitney!
This is the easiest tutorial, thank you! I can’t just leave my 2yr old son w/anyone just to get my hair done. I ❤️ your videos, you make me feel like I can do anything. Thank you!
Whitney !! You have saved my scalp . I had box braids for one week and removed them because they were to heavy and caused my scalp to turn red and burn . I am so excited to try this out! Thanks for sharing.
WHITNEY!!!!! I have been wanting my hair in this style for YEARS and no one could do it. Now I can do this MYSELF! HA!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just read a comment, where a young lady said she was going to stretch her process out (Day 1: Wash, Day 2: Twist, Day 3-4: Wrap) and that seems like SUCH a good idea. Bc after an hour long commute to and from work everyday, the idea of sitting up and doing my hair all in one sitting - that's impossible lol. And my weekends are usually booked from start to finish. Im really excited to try this, I've been plotting on it for months but decided to wait until the holidays :)
I literally just finished a faux loc install last night! I wrapped around some not-so-mini twists I was already wearing. Can't wait for a faux loc wash day video!
Hey NaturallyNeesh ! Just one day! If you can't commit a day, split it into two half days! Twisting on Day 1, Locking on Day 2! After years of mini twists, this is a breeze! Lol! I hope you try! Xo!
No. This hairstyle is only for black people. So please stay away from our culture. Another user before me explained the idea of cultural appropriation. So don't try to do blackface for Halloween or something.
I've been contemplating on what protective style I should do for the new year and thank God I watched this video again. I am soo doing faux locs but gonna use expressions hair
This is the most GENIUS hair-do ever! I have all natural hair but I blow it out because in college it's so difficult (and time consuming) to deal with my hair in it's natural state. I'm going to try this because it looks so easy and amazing! And I've always wanted faux locs but I never worked up the courage to try this. Thanks soooo much for this video!!!!
Omg Whit I did faux locs with yarn before and they took me a week...I told myself I would never do them again! You definitely gave me a few ideas, I might try it again soon thanks!
I've wanted dreads for sooo long but its A LOT of money to get them done and I love this because its easy! Now I have a hairstyle for summer thank you so much
I am one month into my journey beginning locs with mini braids, and I wish this had come out when I was still a loose natural! I had so many problems with the heaviness of faux locs before, and this tutorial is amazing! I'm looking forward to having actual locs, but this is a great go-between for those who want the look but not sure if they want to commit!
I love how your tutorials are so simple to follow along with and you explain the directions really well. And the music was great! Thank you! You're appreciated :)
I have a sensitive scalp as well. I leave my braid hair soaking over night in the vinegar water bath. It really helps. I love this look. Thanks for sharing.
Honestly i never even thought about faux locks. ..even though i knew i wanted to go into locks eventually. This will Def get mew ready for the next chapter in my natural hair journey. .....thanks! !!!!
The green bag that you said was lower quality was the one that I used for my faux locs. I made them about hip length. They lasted me the about 2 months, the summer. At first they were pretty stiff, but after a week or two of moisturizing, they softened up so much and looked more natural.! Next times when I do this style, I definitely want to wash them in vinegar because some parts of my scalp was ON FIRE!! Great idea!!!
For everyone whose hair isn't as long I twisted my own hair from the root then added yarn to the ends to add length. Then wrapped the hair. It kept all my love flexible especially after dipping in hot water
best faux locs tutorial ive ever seen.. very detailed.. im now gona try this myself, given the fact that I've been wanting locs for awhile now...thanks Whitney :)
Thank you so much for your tutorial! I have wanted Faux Locs for ages but haven't been able to commit because of how heavy it can be after all is said and done. I cannot wait to get to follow your instructions and finally make this style my own. Thank you Whitney!
Ooooooh, so that's why my scalp was so itchy when I did my faux locs. My scalp itched so much that I cried myself to sleep for a whole week until the conditioner that I sprayed on my scalp finally started to loosen them a bit ! I will most definitely start washing my braids in acv before use AND also try that method of braiding synthetic hair to the ends of your natural hair! Now with this I won't be loosing my edges because of someone braiding my hair too tight.
OMG!.... can I say I love you....my hair texture is similar to yours....and every time I watch your videos it gives me hope of growing long natural hair for my 2 yr old daughter and I. Such a blessing.
i take your word for it because your tutorials have made my natural hair process soo much easier and managable! I always wanted locks and this is a compromise i can even do myself!! :) totally trying it out as my protective style this winter! WHOP! :) THANKS!!! :)
So I tried these and they came out great, I even had two people with dreads comment that they were jealous. My only complaint is that because they are connected to my hair only with a wrap, they slide out easily (especially because I blow dried my hair and its extra silky). I think I'll style them mostly in a top knot to hold em hostage. Thanks Nap!
Whenever you do something, you're always super innovative with it. Your channel is truly a leader in the natural-hair community. thanks, Whit.
Oh and I forgot to mention, but I used a little under 4 bags of hair for this look!
Very cute.
Your hair is FAR too long to START with add on hair....I'm glad you figured that out. I use a double strand of yarn at the ends to do it....works out great and doesn't cause extra weight. Shamed to admit it took me several pulled or stressed neck and shoulder muscles to figure that out.
You are too smart!! I love how you used your natural hair underneath instead of two layers of synthetic hair on top of your natural hair!! Genius!!
i absolutely love this whitney....
im gonna try dis for my next style...
*lovefromghana*
I'm going to try this tomorrow!!! I bought 5 packs of hair, so I'm going to make the parts a little smaller!!! Thank you for sharing.. Much love to you and the fam :) BTW you ROCK..
omg finally a different and easier way! now i can do it MYSELF.
Exactly, I was watching other videos on this and it seem so difficult but I love Whitney's way.
So agreed, I love being hands on 🙌
It's amazing that people are saying go whit what a great tutorial and still moaning about how to moisturise, and take down. Ermm have you heard of cutting the ends off and unravelling??!! Or spraying the roots with your favourite moisturiser?

Xo! Thank you so much RelLieF !
Whitney you are a genius. One of the reasons why I never tried this hair style was because of the amount of hair you would have to use. It just sounded too heavy & time consuming. Your method seems much better. Changing the natural hair game! Now I can't wait to try it.
New Video!! #NaturalHair DIY Faux Locs | Flexible + Lightweight Xo!
This is really COOL and Fabulous Whitney, a good way to achieve a new look without committing to locs and it's one HECK of a protective style!
Question though - could I use acrylic yarn and do this instead of synthetic hair?
i love how you always come up with more efficient ways of doing styles.
How To Remove Faux Locs Here! Xo!
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, the top of the loc by my scalp is tight, and the bottom where I light is tight, but the middle area keeps unraveling and becomes loose but still attached because it's already been lit. What am I doing wrong? Am I not pulling it tight enough?

Oya's personality just melts my heart. She's so goofy! I love how she repeated no car wash! Lol You can tell she lives her grandparents too. The look in her eyes when she was talking to your dad.....priceless. She's going to be so family oriented. Loved this vlog!
So very clever , creative and lovely!! Absolutely loved it!! ***** ❤❤❤👌

yeah i tried faux locs
I've grown fond of locs over the past few years, but not fond enough to loc my own hair, so I'm grateful for this alternative option. This is a must try, much appreciated
That is genius, Whitney. It looks easy to do.
Thanks ***** ! It's really easy!
***** wow your name is Whitney as well. I love your videos 😁
Whitney, you always find new things to share on your channels, you make this subscriber sooooo happy!!!
I've been wanting locs for a year, but never heard of faux locs. It seems like a great way to test if it would look good on me.
Give it a try imarockstarification ! They look very realistic! You'll definitely be able to see if locs would work for you!
You posted this at the best time ever!!!!! I always wondered why all the tutorials on faux locs required braiding with synthetic hair first and then wrapping...its just too much hair!!!!! plus its way too heavy. I'm so glad you posted this video....God sent

This is soooooo cool! But aint nobody got time for that!
Hahaha. That's want I say. Whitney has so much patience. I'd give up after 10 twists LOL.
MyMamasChild2 You and me both. The twists would be enough...but then the wrapping? #nope
I got 3 min into that vlog and thought "shheeeeee!"
The easiest way to install faux locs, naturals.
Naptural85, you are a goddess amongst women! Thanks a ton for this video. Seriously!
This video was the answer to my prayers! Yasssss! I love this woman!
Finally this looks way more manageable and pain free without the weight of the faux locs, I'll be trying these for sure.
Me too!😜
Yesss, finally a lighter and easier alternative for locs! Thanks for sharing Whitney! You look great!
you look great with locs!
Thank you! Aaliyah Muhammad
During your sectioning and detangling I was chanting "gorgeous hair, gorgeous hair..." ^_^ It's just so long, full and fluffyyyyy :)
This is the easiest tutorial, thank you! I can’t just leave my 2yr old son w/anyone just to get my hair done. I ❤️ your videos, you make me feel like I can do anything. Thank you!
So wanna try this! Thanks Whitney!
Yay! I hope it turns out well!
Whitney !! You have saved my scalp . I had box braids for one week and removed them because they were to heavy and caused my scalp to turn red and burn . I am so excited to try this out! Thanks for sharing.
i HATE dread locks in general, but you make it look so gorgeous and simple. LOVE IT!
WHITNEY!!!!! I have been wanting my hair in this style for YEARS and no one could do it. Now I can do this MYSELF! HA!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your amazing! Beautiful too...thanks for the inspiration :)
Xo!!! Aw, thank you so much Aaliyah A. !! I'm happy you enjoyed it
I just read a comment, where a young lady said she was going to stretch her process out (Day 1: Wash, Day 2: Twist, Day 3-4: Wrap) and that seems like SUCH a good idea. Bc after an hour long commute to and from work everyday, the idea of sitting up and doing my hair all in one sitting - that's impossible lol. And my weekends are usually booked from start to finish. Im really excited to try this, I've been plotting on it for months but decided to wait until the holidays :)
Loks are awsm. By far...very attractive on ya too. The best. ♡♡♡
I literally just finished a faux loc install last night! I wrapped around some not-so-mini twists I was already wearing. Can't wait for a faux loc wash day video!
Love!! Thanks for sharing
I just want to say that you look ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS with these locs, I LOVE ItT!
Yay, a great tutorial for locks that don't end up heavy and/or stiff!! thank you!
I want to do these but geesh it takes so long lol
Hey NaturallyNeesh ! Just one day! If you can't commit a day, split it into two half days! Twisting on Day 1, Locking on Day 2! After years of mini twists, this is a breeze! Lol! I hope you try! Xo!
I shall try. I can do it! lol oh and good afternoon!
I love how I can count on you to develop a simple approach for complex hair DIYs!!I appreciate your channel so much
girl if i were you i wouldn't use any extensions it's long enough already
she needed to to burn the ends thats all but yes her hair is crazy long!
This method is much less complicated to do and leaves less stress on edges as well. I can't wait to try them!
i don't have natural hair, will this work?
You probably won't be able to keep them in as long, but yup you sure can :)
No. This hairstyle is only for black people. So please stay away from our culture. Another user before me explained the idea of cultural appropriation. So don't try to do blackface for Halloween or something.
It would probably help to use hair texture paste when you twist/braid your hair
okay thank you!
Who died and made teacuptofu queen of black people..? #rollseyes
I was already about to put twist in my hair as a protective style. I LOVE this. Thank you so much.
Your natural hair is so gorgeous and has grown so much..... Love the faux locs too
I've been contemplating on what protective style I should do for the new year and thank God I watched this video again.
I'm totally doing this over my spring break. Thank you soo much. You were the first natural hair RUclipsr I ever watched when I first went natural
You're a genius! now I don't have to worry about the weight of faux locs taking out my edges or nape.
Thank you, and you have very beautiful hair!
Omg Whit I did faux locs with yarn before and they took me a week...I told myself I would never do them again! You definitely gave me a few ideas, I might try it again soon thanks!
Wow! I can't believe how EASY it is! I paid someone $$ to do mine w/yarn which kept coming loose on the ends. Now I can do this myself and save $$!!
hey Whitney, I've watched a couple of faux loc tutorials, BUT!!! yours is the best technique that I've seen, thank you so much.
I really hope youtube spotlights Whitney in their advertising like they have for the other people on here. She knows her stuff.
I've been loving the hair transformations! Lookin' good girl!
such a great THOROUGH & DETAILED video!!! love this style on you !!
You're a genius! This method looks a lot lighter than other methods I've seen. A must try.
I still can't get over how long your hair is!!! 😍
Your natural hair is absolutely gorgeous.
I've always wanted to experiment with faux locs and give my natural hair a styling vacation. This method is fantastic. You're the best Whitney! TFS.
Almost gave up completely on ptotective styles until I saw this video, so thanks for saving my natural journey you are awesome!!!!!!
Did these in 7 hours only used 2 3/4 bags of hair.. Thanks Whitney!
Honestly i never even thought about faux locks. ..even though i knew i wanted to go into locks eventually. This will Def get mew ready for the next chapter in my natural hair journey. .....thanks! !!!!
Four days off of work next week I can't WAIT to do this. Day 1: Wash etc.; Day 2: Twist; Day 3&4: Wrap them.
Omg this is the best faux locs tutorial ever! can't wait to try it!
Wonderfully gorgeous Nap! You make the most out of the versatility of our hair so simple and innovative!
Awesome tutorial! I never would have thought to soak the hair in ACV to prevent itching. This was a great video, and I love the results.
Wow! What a great tension free way to do locs that anyone can use. Great tutorial!
OMG!.... can I say I love you....my hair texture is similar to yours....and every time I watch your videos it gives me hope of growing long natural hair for my 2 yr old daughter and I. Such a blessing.
This is so beautiful, and your alternative method makes it seem so much simpler.
When you took that first bun down...!!! Yesssss! !🙌
Your natural hair though... OMG so gorgeous! I pray my hair grows that long one day!!!
i take your word for it because your tutorials have made my natural hair process soo much easier and managable!
Thanks Nap!
