A friend of mine, Larry Tussy, from Liberty, Indiana, participated in this. He was a mechanic that worked on my vehicles and sadly passed away last year. On his tool box he had a small plaque attached to it that had 1969 Plymouth trouble shooting contest. His brother now has his tool box.
When I was a freshman in high school our school was 2nd in the nation in the Plymouth trouble shooting contest and they got to go somewhere for the finals. I don’t think it was Indianapolis for some reason I thought they went to D.C. but I could be wrong. Rosemount HS,Rosemount MN. The teacher was Richard Rabanus…I don’t remember who the two students were that got #2 in the nation but the teacher almost always got the state title and went to the finals. I doubt if Mr Rabanus is still with us because in 1975 he was already 40ish. He was the auto shop teacher and you had to be a junior or senior to be in auto shop and I was only a freshman. I did have him for metal shop teacher. He was pretty strict. If you called a drill bit a drill bit you got to do 25 pushups or if you called sandpaper, sandpaper you would get 25 pushups 😆😂!! It’s abrasive cloth!! 🙄
All 100 cars had the same problem but what was it? How long did it take the winning team to trouble shoot the problem? Did the students actually have parts to make repairs (to diagnostic and fix the problem)?
Good day, maybe you can answer a question for me. Did 1969 383 Road Runners ever come with a 150mph speedometer. I met two owners that had them and when I asked them if it was original they said yes. It had to be ordered though according to the two owners.
It did not. That would have been the Plymouth GTX speedo. We have seen '68 parts on '69 Road Runners, but verifying a 150 speedometer being on the car since new....oof.
I can attest that Chrysler used 1969 Road Runners for the 1969 Plymouth Troubleshooting contest. I was a senior in high school at the time but was not in auto mechanics. There was at least one team from our high school that participated in the local contest. I don't remember how well they did. I thought it was cool that the guys got to troubleshoot Road Runners.
This was awesome! Love it
Thanks!

That's a great and very interesting story. Brilliant job!👌👍
This is interesting. Never had any idea this history
Thanks Harry! I plan on doing a bunch of these on other muscle cars as well.
How cool is that? VERY COOL!!!
That contest would have been fun to watch!

What was the troubleshooting bug that the students had to fix.
Bad ground
Did fastest team get a car? Man do I wish I was born back then. Anyone know anyone that participated in any of these events?
That would have been cool. I'll have to relook and see what they got.
What did the top trouble shooters win?
That is really cool however those Vin numbers 266200---266300 is actually
101 cars
True. It's in that VIN range though.
Were these cars Automatic or 4 speed?
All autos, John. Thx for asking.
Pure BS. You think people will believe it just because you say it?
I welcome the proof showing otherwise.
You're a positive individual, aren't you!?!
