I agree, but he mostly does that when he reads a label that smugly goes on and on about "sustainability" and how they are "dedicated to saving the planet one can/tin at a time"!! Then you'd see the toss and some weird sound effect like a broken wine bottle!! The words "up-cycle" did have me worried a bit, that a toss was imminent, regardless of the nice art on the box!! LOL ;D
In reality, I get a bit, how do we put it - um, suspicious when the packaging is mega fancy. My experience with many foods is that the food seldom turns out to be mind-blowing when I try it due to the fancy-ass packaging. 🤣🤣
Agreed. Matthew Carlson is very refreshing. RUclips is a sea of chronically online weirdos who don’t seem like well adjusted people. By comparison Matt seems like a guy you’d actually meet and hang out with in real life, as opposed to being a weird entity that only exists in my phone screen…which is what MOST RUclipsrs feel like to me lol
My last life was as a print production supervisor. What you’re looking at is a box that was printed as CMYK (or several PMS spot colors)+Spot varnish+foil stamping+emboss/deboss+diecut. Either way…it’s pricey. You’re proof that the print industry is not dead.
@@TryinaD - Agreed. Unfortunately, most are resistant to paying for something they feel has no value. Which includes the DESIGN as well. As designers and marketing pros we know what can add value to a product.
worked in silkscreen and large format digital printing for years myself (now a painter/fabricator at the same company) and i'm still a sucker for nicely designed packaging
Thanks for the video. I agree about your thoughts on the packaging and inclusion of art. While it shouldn't compensate for the fish itself, it is a great addition that can bring more joy to the world. Art is life!
When I'm eating Fishwife, I feel it is socially acceptable to join my coworkers in the lunchroom and eat straight from the can/box. I eat in my office with any other canned fish.
@@Marko-bh3plthe people in my household love the smell of sardines but the people in my house are also cats so that may have something to do with it. 😂
Another great video flick Matthew. For many years I smoked salmon and steelhead trout for myself, family, and friends. Usually in a teriyaki orange brine. The really hard smoked jerky style from the thinner cut belly strips was like crack cocaine. On another note. There is no such thing as trout or fish "tenderloin". There is the loin on the back atop the spine and the belly meat under the spine. The choicest parts of most any fish are the cheeks. Succulent and tender morsels of fish deliciousnessessess. On still another note, now I need to go and get some Fishwife! Mahalo senior!
I like the "Matthew goes on a tangent" part of the video it adds a very interesting piece to the video and it's just as watchable and entertaining as every other part of the video because it's just so naturally woven through. Beautiful work.
Thank you, Julia, for sending the loot! This was a funky box, a fun video, and it was all thanks to you! Matt, you need to get R.D. Jr. to paint one of his supercars like that box!
Certainly, the International Cat League would fully endorse this product. What, you've never heard of them? They produce many of the cat videos seen everywhere on You Tube!! ;D LOL
I liked when you used include the price. This looks great, so I'll look it up, but comparing taste to price is a valuable inclusion to your wonderful videos 😊
I put my Fishwife boxes up at my desk at work and get many questions about them. I’ve turned a few folks on to the tinned fish just because they love the design so much!
Letss goooooo matti boy the love is real! Great lil video that can looks delicious and I was waiting to see some sippage u never fail to deliver the goods. Yo and keep that hair growing let’s get back to the Trader Joe’s review era look. Priceless ✌️🐠🍻💚
Great video Matt!! I picked up a box of these jerky gems awhile ago at a place called Botanica and I think about it most every day. Delicious. Fishwife is next level. And I agree, I'm happy to pay extra for the mind-blowing packaging. It's just another thing to brighten your day.
I randomly got your videos in my feed, for Christmas my mother gifted me some fine canned sardines, I noticed the brand was from one of your videos. Thank you 😅👍🤣
Beauty added for its own sake (i.e., serving no functional purpose) is the bohemian definition of art "l'art pour l'art". Wonderful to see something so lofty applied to something so mundane as fish!
Actually surprised to see a freshwater fish lol Always thought most tins were saltwater- but now that I think about it I have seen tinned Pike and Catfish.
I'm here because @shopwitchvamp mentioned you on her Tumblr. Love the can's box design, I know I'd keep it. All the cans sold near me are so boring looking :/
I cold ordered some of these and some other fishwife stuff when i got a craving for more tinned fish recently. I hadn't even thought to check here if you had already covered them! Glad to know what I'm in for now
Random comment when I was on my addiction I must of watched all your videos and falling more into my addiction I left your page for Good because of just being down and out but now with 4 months sober I can say yesssssssssss I’m back bby thank you for being you ama give sardines a try
Lots of good stuff to comment on in this episode Matt. First, really nice T-shirt, love the artwork, and speaking of it, I agree with you. In a world filled with ugliness, especially now with wars, riots, mass shootings, etc., why not make something of beauty. As an artist myself, I appreciate any efforts to make a beautiful graphic presentation on anything you can imagine. Not saying this box is "suitable for framing" or anything like that, but I did notice you did not toss it aside like most others you review. LOL. Yes, kind of a "cat food-ish" appearance when first opened is not a food marketer's dream, I guess. And I imagine a dinner party with it as an appetizer or entree, and friends or potential friends invited, would be "instructive"! "Let the guest list be self- pared down" for the next time I imagine would be the outcome!! :D Good one, but does not look like a replacement for fresh caught trout out of a high mountain lake on a backpack trip to me. But it would be a nice portable alternative for the times you get skunked on a fishing trip where you hoped to sample the bounty that Nature has to offer. I've become a "softie" in that regard lately about that, and would opt for the canned fish, maybe tiny tots, rather than harm one of God's creatures just to eat a "wilderness meal", ...unless I was starving to death, of course! LOL ;D
Ive been out of the canned fish game since high school. Dines, oysters, herring. Used to get the canned corned beef too. Time to reenter the game... big y has matiz sardines for half off
Hello friend i keep seeing your videos about canned goods and i think i may have one you would like to try i know you enjoy Nuri sardines but have you ever tried Tenório tuna? The brand itself is 143 years old from Portugal and while it isnt cheap its not overly expensive i think you would enjoy it since i think you appreciate well made canned goods. Have a good day folks.
Hey Matt! Can you please try the aldi brand sardines (Northern Catch) in spring water? I know you are not a huge fan of deens in water. Neither was I until I had these. I was pleasantly surprised when I first had them because they were so good, especially with some hot sauce. And on top of that, 1 can is only 1 dollar. You gotta try them out and do a review!!! Thanks!
hey man i searched up "ligo canned sardines and found no videos" i aint never tried the best sardine cans in the world, but i swear the ligo brand from the fillipines is top notch, never have i had such plump and melt in your mouth sardines, they arent hard at all like your flat canned sardines. they have different flavors too. the coconut curry one is very good and the traditional tomato one is great as well, eat with room temp white rice
Matt, you got me hooked on the sardine habit too. I have a small can every Saturday nowadays. Is there an HEB supermarket in NY? Stumbled across two cheap brands: Mina skinless and boneless sardines in extra virgin olive oil. It was $3.58, which I find to be mid-range pricing. The other was Beach Cliff sardines in tomato sauce. It was quite cheap, only $1.22. I'll wait til this Friday and toss a coin to see which one I try first. I tried a lot of Trader Joe's brands and they weren't bad at all for the money.
It would have been HILARIOUS if you wound up hating the trout jerky because then I could always comment: "That's what happens when 95% of the budget is in designing the packaging and 5% is in preparing the actual product!" 😂
Could you please tell us which sardines are kosher, and which ones are not, I'd really appreciate it. PS in my shower at college, I had no soap holder. So I used a coat hanger, and a sardine can and made a soap holder that hung right from the faucets. You put holes in the bottom of the can, and that keep the soap from getting mushy. Have you found uses for the cans? That would also make a great video All the Best! 73 DE W8LV BILL

That's an extremely expensive box to print. I bet they're double digits per box.

I liked the box too, yeah, yeah, yeah...😎

the box has a hipster fiesta type of vibe.
Of course, and very popular in San Fran's homeless camps, relatively cheap and good food, not like the crabs at Fisherman's Wharf!! LOL
