When Siblings Can't Quite Get Along - Wildlife Rescue Dade County Ron & Rose (1/29-2/3)

  • In the last video I shared from this nest, I may have been a bit hasty in thinking these two had worked out their differences & come to an understanding.
Don't get me wrong - I've seen much more intense "bonking" between siblings, but R8 definitely has a tough time sharing the nest with the dominant R7. I did include a couple of quick clips of the very minor beginnings of these episodes - nothing intense... but yes, sometimes these two tussle pretty good. We can understand that it's a normal event, while still having some trouble processing it.
BUT... there is a sort of advantage that comes from the adversity of being the second-hatch. Every season, we see eaglets that appear to be at a worrisome disadvantage due to all of this - and it is true that those eaglets do often get a bit less (or even nothing at some feedings). Here's the thing to remember - When they do get a feeding, it's a GOOD feeding. Even more important is the unique and important skills these eaglets develop in their effort to get fed. They come up with clever "routes" to get to the feeding parent, especially when they see an opportunity. This is a very handy skill for an eagle - plotting and strategizing, while learning to work around potential threats! These eaglets are also often quick to start working on self-feeding skills, getting the hang of the steps to handle prey, and going through the motions, so to speak, early. Even if they're not physically capable of unzipping a fish or defeathering a bird just yet, they are demonstrating an understanding of how this whole feeding process works, and that's great!
We do see a lot of this from R8 already - s/he's learning all of these types of skills, and it's remarkable to watch. An eagle's life is surely not an easy one, and it ultimately only benefits them to get a little edge on facing adversity early on.
Rose & Ron are not new to this parenting thing either, and Rose seems especially skilled at feeding both eaglets and even providing some distraction here and there. All in all, both eaglets look to be doing great. As an update to the clips in this video, it sounds like reports are claiming R8 had a pretty successful feast today.

thank you for your very informative narrative. I really appreciate learning new things to understand eaglet behaviors and nest dynamics in general. I must say that I am impressed with R8's instincts and strategies in dealing with the dominant sib. R8 knows when to submit and assume nonconfrontational posture even before R7 makes it over to bonk. Like you mentioned, some valuable survival skills learned and practiced here. I really like the way things are progressing with this nest and the adaptability of little R8. It definitely helps to have stellar parents too! Thanks for the video! 💖🦅

I’m still peeking and running lol… I really want to see them grow up as I’ve seen ALL the R’s do, but I know my limitations and can’t ask them to be anything but eaglets trying to survive. So I’ll wait until they outgrow their parliament judge’s wigs and start to look more like Dracula… I do pray they settle down by then. Rose and Ron are awesome parents. ♥️♥️♥️♥️

Yes It’s a papason (sp) chair erected to assist the eagles in nest construction.

It can certainly be a bit hard to watch the bonking, but it's equally amazing to watch the second-hatch navigate the challenge & overcome it. Every year, we get some amazing stories of eaglets that overcame & they are so very impressive!

Great explanation. I do feel this dynamic is actually beneficial for their cruel future. It is very peaceful in some nests (like Captiva nest) which is nice to watch but may not be a good training field.

Exactly... It's a trade-off in some ways. I have a family member who grew up practically having to raise herself due to her single mother's alcoholism. Childhood was not necessarily easy for her, but she has grown up to be a very accomplished, independent woman - effectively breaking that cycle. The same applies to animals - every challenge has the potential to teach a valuable lesson. Though we'd like to see everyone have smooth sailing into life, it's just not that way, and we have to try to see the silver linings on the other side of the challenge.
