I'm looking for a similar replacement for my Michelin Latitude Cross ( 225/55 R17 w 101 XL ) for my Subaru Forester, I'm looking for something with around 80% on road/20% off road capability ...what recommendations do you have ?
only downfall is sometimes that tyre does come in your wheel size :( the 4 5 and 4s need to be available for smaller cars like the 205 gti etc I think. 15 inch and up. otherwise your bang on and I love these reviews.
After watching for years, I'm still floored with the all testing and explaining of everything. The amount of time you put it into your videos is amazing. Watching the production value go up video after video great to see. Great work
I have recently moved from the Michelin Pilot Super Sports to the PS5 on my 420hp RWD M140i. The difference in grip levels is staggering, I have gone from lighting up the rear tyres in the dry in 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd, to having almost immediate grip from a standstill. Absolutely transformed the capabilities of the car.
Hi mate how old were your PSS? I'm in a similar boat, looking to switch out the PSS on my Maserati Gransport (similar power, RWD, similarly spins up all the way to third). I was thinking 4S but I heard they have soft sidewalls and aren't as sharp and I don't want that. I'd go toyo r888r which are AWESOME from testing on my previous car, but they also tend to sandblast side sills when warm which I'd want to avoid. Yokohama AD08R are also apparently great, haven't tried those. Are the PS5 as sharp as your previous PSS?
@@Tom--Ace Hi Tom, I suppose it depends on your use case and how you drive the car. The main benefits for me for the PS5 over the PSS is the all year round usability. They are night and day different in the cold/damp/wet conditions. The PSS only provided any level of grip if it was bone dry and over 12/14 degrees C. Im sure you've experienced this. In truth I only went for the PS5 as I can't get the PS4S in my tyre size. Whilst the 4s won't offer much more grip in wet/dry conditions apparently they are a lot more rewarding when pushing on. Either way I would 100% recommend switching from the PSS to PS5 or 4S especially if you live in a climate like the UK.
I definitely have much more confidence in purchasing the Primacy4+ after this. I was going to spend more money on the 4S (or wait until the 5 was available in my area) but decided on the Primacy4+ and I'm ecstatic to see data supporting my decision. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to providing accurate, easily digestible information.
Do they suit an S class? Looking between both the PS5 and the primacy 4+, the emphasis is safety and comfort. Not worried about performance as it is an S class. Leaning towards the Primacy, naturally. Your thoughts are much appreciated
As someone who lives in a warmer climate (Queensland, Australia), I for one was happy that the testing was done on a warmer day as it was more applicable to me! 🙂 Also, really interested to see the extra data including the other brands as I was comparing to some of them, and my preference for the PS5 was confirmed independently. Thanks for these videos, that are very informative, and really well presented and explained. 👍
THANK YOU ! It’s so rare to see a test between different categories of tyres ! This will make choosing between Touring and Performance tyre much easier. Your test clearly shows the importance of choosing the right category for your application. The Touring tyre is probably the safest for the average driver with no piloting skills thanks to it’s predictability. Also it’s more refined for everyday driving. The UHP is the tyre for a GT, shining when driving fast on the road. But it’s not for the track. The UUHP is definitely the one to choose for driving at the limit on a track. Also, the data for TÜV shows that tyres should be tested when worn, there was some good and bad surprises in their testing…
UUHP is more for agressive road driving and part time track warrior if you really want the best of the best its the cu2r there bascialy road legal race rubber.
I've recently changed my Golf Gti's tyres to the pilot sport 5 and I'm amazed by the improvement from the falkens I had before (dealer fit). No more needless wheelspin when getting out from junctions, more confidence inspiring in any condition and MUCH MUCH quieter when on motorways. Super happy, I just wish I had changed over sooner.
This again confirms to me that I made the right choice for PS5 for my Alfa GT. Perfect all rounder, which still keeps the comfort, but also wouldn't be ashamed if taken to a track day. After 3k KM with them I can say that I'm superbly pleased, and happy to see the life expectancy, plus with the added bonus of keeping the wet performance when close to end of it's lifetime. Also can confirm the wet performance is really amazing, I felt super safe during my speedy highway night drive across Europe in the pouring rain recently. Perfect tyre for GT cars in my opinion. Happy Michelin customer. :) P.S: Astonishing test as always John!
@@jeronimjurakovic2919 I think you wouldn't loose any of the performance of PS4, but you would get more lifetime out of PS5. That's what Michelin claims, and I tend to believe them. I did not drive the PS4 so cannot say anything personally though.
I have Primacy4 225/50 17 on my Cruze, it's incredible in the wet and also provide low noise levels.... Confort is also strong, first time using Michelin and really like it.
Tyre temperature and how it effects pretty much all aspects of driving is fascinating. Back when I rode my motorcycles, the difference of peak performance temperature between touring tyres (55°C), sports tyres (85°C) and race tyres (95°C) was quite something. In car tyres it's similar, and you can feel that, when the temperatures vary greatly between days.
I'm running a set of Conti ExtremeContact 235/50R18 tires on my older car. I like the idea of the Primacy being more comfortable. I will certainly consider them for my next set.
Was happy with my PS4, but was easy to overheat on occasional track days. PS4S now for almost 2 years excellent in every possible way, wet or dry performance, track performance, overall feel of the car and even wear is AMAZING.
I will never again buy tyres without consulting Tyre review. The depth and professionalism in these videos is amazing. This video was great in particular because I was always going to buy Michelin tyres but wait, now there's PS5? Where does it sit in relation to PS4S? Beautifully explained. Thank you.
The statistics provided by the TÜV really attest to the consistency in performance over wear with the Michelin tyres. I've said this before, but the Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres I drive on still perform like new at end-of-life in all situations. I'm on my second set on my Golf VII R. Fortunately, living in Australia means I can enjoy the high grip that comes with the high temperatures here, but they're still very competent in the wet. Thanks again for such an empirical and consistent test.
Can’t agree on the first bit. Cup2 have the most amount of grip when new and if you track them you will clearly notice a difference in performance between new and end of life. However I agree they aren’t bad in the wet, just be careful with aqua planning.
@@sunshine101spooger You're right. They do have a tendency to aquaplane when the road has a bit of water on it, but in the Golf R it's fairly predictable and manageable. Like you said, on the track they are awesome. Loads of grip, no feathering or jittering - just a pleasure to drive on.
@@Ratcher I was comparing the Cup 2 at its end-of-life to the standard road tyre Bridgestones that came with the car out of the factory. Those unpredictably lost grip in normal driving, even though they still had tread and about 25% wear left. With the Cup 2, I never had that issue. It did expectedly lose a bit of grip towards the end, but I didn't have to alter my driving like I had to with the original tyres that were fitted. Just clarifying my experience, I'm not disputing your experience.
Currently driving a M2 Comp, ive just put Pirelli P Zero Corsas on mine, They are quiet, Stick like glue and hard wearing. Ive tried everything, My last car was an M4. Well pleased.
Great video! I'd love to see how the Cross Climate 2 compares to these, and understand what (if any) compromises you're making for that additional winter performance.
I live in the tropics where the temps are in the mid 30s everyday. This testing data is actually super relevant to me and anyone else who lives around the equator.
Congrats! You are one of the very few that have such an excellent approach of combining very analytical driver's experience with statistics data. Keep up!
"There is a tyre for every person". Spot on! Totally agree with that. It all boils down to what do you want in a tyre for your car. What is your top priority and then the rest. There is likely a tyre that satisfies every want subject to availability of size of course.
This would be true IF Michelin (and all of the other 'majors') offered their models in a FULL RANGE of sizes (at least down into the 17" wheel sizes, if not 16"), for said models. Sadly, Michelin, in all of their wisdom and 'kindness', has never, and will never offer their 'miraculous' PS4S, let alone the even more ridiculously 'up-sized' PSS5, in the size I need (215/40-17), and which would ever possibly fit under my car's wheel wells. I am NOT buying a new ride, with a /35 or /30 rubber band profile, 19"-22" hoops as standard, just to experience their 'perfect' road tire. ☹
This is the Tyre Reviews test I have been waiting for, and the icing on the cake... the Golf shod with 225 40 R18 tyres, perfect car and tyre size selection from my point of view.
@@tyrereviews I'm not far off needing a full set of tyres, Pilot Sport 5 looks best for me, only slightly higher rolling resistance than the Primacy 4+ but real world road performance that almost matches the Pilot Sport 4S. (add in a stiffer rear sway bar and solid drop links and your understeer worries are gone)
I was very happy with the PS4 in 225/40r18 but when I tried the Goodyear Asymmetric 5 I literally fell in love. Same performance in every condition but a huge difference in tread life, +60% in my case.
Have been running the PS5 for around 4000 miles on a mk5 Golf GTi through this years hot british summer. Realise that as I swap from an all season for the summer which will make any performance tyre feel amazing, very familiar roads have felt a lot more precise to drive on compared to the PS 4 used for the last two summers (same car - Golf GTi Mk 5).The PS5 has been very confidence inspiring in the summer down pours - subjectively they felt a lot more surefooted and the TC/ABS hardly triggered. Where I was really surprised was how neutral they felt on the super hot days - previous experience with both PS4 and other brands, the super hot temperatures would feel really imprecise and spongy, especially on the magnificent top dressed british roads (in the same car) but with the PS5 I felt a lot more connected.
How's the road noise? My mate got the ps4's and complained about significant increase in road noise compared to his previous regularbudget tyre. How is the PS5 in regards to this?
I've got a mk2 TT (same engine as the mk5 GTI) and it also feels great on the PS5s. So much better than the old Pirellis the car came with. Obviously new tyres will be better than ones that have been on the car for a few years but I didn't expect there to be so much more grip, plus the ESP is kicking in far less when accelerating hard.
Interesting stuff. Also, finally, a tire test that looks at what I care about most, wet roads and 90+ degree temps. I'm in Florida, in the summer it rains almost every day, you can get spot flooding very easily, and the second the clouds are gone it's 90+ degrees, with super high humidity, and the roads are wet and literally steaming well into the night. I owned a C5 Corvette a while back, and it had still had the stock runflats on it, and that thing was nearly impossible to drive in the rain and it slip and slid all over the place, but the tires looked brand new - when I finally changed them out anyways, for the legendary Goodyear GSD3, still the best looking tires ever made, the performance was like getting a new car when the roads were wet, that was the first time I had ever bought good tires and felt them 'bite' in corners, and since then I've always replaced crappy tires with the best wet handling tires I could find for every car I've owned.
Antoher fantastic test! I buy tyres based on your reviews and the data available on your website. For this summer season I bought Michelin PS4S’s (20 inch) for my BMW 750i F02 and bought new Hankooks for winter (19 inch). Massive thanks for all the work you do!!!💪💪💪
Currently running a 245/40/18 PS4S on my mk7.5 gti with dedicated summer wheels, and i can absolutely attest to the performance of the 4S: it's incredible. I had so much confidence in cornering when i really pushed the tire, it felt as though the limit was very wide and forgiving. i made it a habit to listen to the tire when cornering, and i found a lot of predictability in that. the end result was that, while my friends and i are not professional racing drivers, none of them were able to keep up with me on track, including my friend who had the most experience with the course we were driving :D
Primacy 4 owner here. The tyre doesn't want to wear out ahahha. The only time i got to overheat the tyres and feel them losing grip was on a half an hour spiritive driving session through the mountains (On a 2004 VW Touran 1.6 i). Comfort is sublime, noise levels are very low. The primacy hp / 3 wore out pretty quickly but the primacy 4 is something else of a tyre in my opinion.
@@tyrereviews Don't forget that these are the OEM tyres for the cheaper versions of the GR 86 and BRZ. So they are at least playful on small sportscars like these. 😁
I’m thinking of switching from 215/55/R16 to 235/45/R17 on my 10th gen civic also. This video explains everything I needed to know PERFECTLY. Thanks brother
Great to see a focus on worn states as 4wd tyres are particularly bad for this. I've had sets with 20% meat left on them but driving in the wet was like Bambi on ice 😬
Any tyre with low thread left will suffer with water. Did a test with continental (event) where minimum thread depth premium tyres are massively worse in wet braking compared to a never heard before brand of new set budget tyres.
The funny thing is, in the last 20 years, I have only purchased Michelin tires for my M3. I recently added a Mach 1 to my garbage (came with Cup 2's), but picked up a new tire/wheel combo that had Nittos...and I can't wait to get rid of the Nittos and put Michelin 4D on it (yes, the '21 Mach 1 handles well enough you need the Michelin 4s at a minimum to fully enjoy it).
Before discovering this excellent channel I put a set of PS4S on my 380bhp F-Type S and a set of PS5 on my 2004 400bhp XKR. I think I made two very good choices more by luck than judgement. Despite the slight horsepower advantage the XKR is far more relaxed and delivers a much smoother ride. I tend not to push too hard but it can motor along very quickly without you realising. The PS5 suits it well. The F-Type in contrast is like and eager puppy encouraging me to push harder all the time. PS4S again suits that well.
I've had these tyres on my 2003 BMW Z4 for the last 14.000km. Absolutely love them. The grip is fantastic, I can take corners at ridiculous speeds without losing grip. Wet weather performance has also been fantastic, having used them through some pretty strong rainstorms. I also drove at 220km/h on the Autobahn with them and they felt rock solid. Lastly, I got caught by a surprise April snowstorm with them and I didn't slip at all. Really love them, I will definitely be sticking to Michelin for my next set of tyres.
I purchased PS5 for my GT86 off the back of this excellant review. They replaced the OEM Primacy ones it came with (even though the tread was fine they were 5 years old). Thankyou for doing these videos and shinning light in a dark corner without the annoying look at me 'flex' you get on most reviews.
Michelin has always been excellent at blending grip with long life so no changes here. Go Michelin! Cavity noise intrigues me as a concept. What does it mean? I had a set of Michelins a while back and I could hear the kind of noise on bumps that you hear when bouncing a large rubber ball like a space hopper, basketball or similar! Sort of high frequency reverberation. 🤔 Very impressed by how objective you manage to make these comparison videos.
That's an interesting sounding sound! Cavity noise is the noise of the sound resonating or bouncing inside the wheel / tyre, it's the mid pitch usually opposed to the slightly higher windish noise from the tread pattern. you might have had a loose TPMS lol
Cavity noise is caused by the vibration of the air within the tyre causing a dull droning noise, typically around 220-240Hz. Interestingly both Honda, Lexus and Michelin themselves have tried to engineer small cavities (called Helmholtz resonators) within the wheel spokes/rims which are tuned to cancel out these frequencies, akin to blowing over the rim of a beer bottle!
@@toddpowell9393 the ingenuity of people never ceases to amaze me. Most people never give tyres a first thought let alone a second but they hide exquisite science within.
I've had pilot sport 4's on my Jetta for around 55,000km. Rears (now) are very low tread (been on the wear bars for a while and the fronts are close to the bars. I don't drive them easy at all. They still have bucket loads of grip... the BEST tyres I've ever had on my car. Amazing performance and awesome tread life!
Having been a brake tester on a track for years i am still amazed at his observations and skills . The best reviewer for tyres anywhere !!! I ended up buying the sport 5 for my rwd large sedan ( Ford falcon xr6 Australian ) and they are SUPERB !!! I couldn't believe they ended up cheaper than many Bridgestone, conti , Dunlop's and more . Thankyou very much .
@@DeckoTD i think i purchased the sport 4 , although I'm not sure . I know they're not the 4s , and not the primacy . But either way , they are extremely good . Very stiff 😭sidewalls , they are very responsive and the grip is superb . Neutral and excellent feedback right up to the limit . Wet weather performance can't be criticized either. Overall a great set of tyres for performance or daily driving . And I've only just done 10k in them and they look brand new.
Brilliant, excellent work, great data, great explanations and great use of other real-world data. And it did make me feel very good about my recent purchase of a set of PS 4 S for my Focus ST. They suit my driving and tyre preferences extremely well. Great to see your results providing the data to validate my subjective impressions. Keep up the excellent work.
These days, there are so many tires to choose from from one manufacturer for one size. Tests like these are very helpful as it helps narrow down the choice.
Have the primacy 4 on our DS3 THP 155. Real good “GT tire”, still realy stabel at higher speeds a well, around 160-210km/h. Makes the car still fun steering in the twisties when on “new ground”. On the roads we know, still fun but we do miss some performance on the limit. But a great overall tyre. Willing to opt for the primacy 4+ now.
I had the Pilot 4 and now I have all 5 in a BMW e90. The new ones are better because they are a little more rigid in the casing, which allows lower pressures and improves cushioning and grip without the flan-like movements that the Pilot 4 had, which often forced higher pressures. All a success.
Love these reviews! So much more depth than anyone else, and including wear performance measures really puts this channel over the top. Even when I'm not tire (tyre ;) searching, it's still very educational yet interesting.
Thank you for all the work you put into making the absolute best tyre reviews out there! Gotta say I’m completely fond of my choice for the PS5. Would have gone for PS4S, but I'm running 17". My PS4s lasted nearly 40k km and have still some thread on them, so I’m curious to see what the PS5 will accomplish!
I'm a bit disapointed by my PS5 now, compared with my previous 4 (not 4S, could not find ATM for my 2O5/40R17 MX-5), on the specific lifetime point. i've done 40k km with PS4, but now at 20k km, my PS5 look seriously worned, especially on the front. Yes, there endured 4 weeks of road trips at a enjoyable rythm, plus some week-ends, but no track sessions compared to the 4. They give me confidence, they are grippy on dry and wet. But lifetime my not be that better.
This es exactly the nerdy consumer advice I was looking for my decision. Though being a motorhead noone has a clue about tire voodoo without videos like yours. Keep up the good work!
Excellent, well done, we need these kinds of comparisons because sometimes we are on the fence and consider jumping from one category to another depending on what the tires offer and our ability to adapt to those conditions (example: I often ram summer only tires because I would park my sports car for the winter and only drive my family car in cold temperatures but when all season tires got much better then I could drive the sports car in the winter which I prefer to do, etc.). Thank you! Keep up the great work!
Did 2 set of Primacy 4 for my MPV and 2 set of PS4 and currently use PS4S for my GTI. Primacy 4 definitely for comfort driving especially when you drive with family. Low noise level and confident in wet. On the other hand for the PS4, first change of PS4 is made in EU. Love the overall character of the car. Straight line stability and calm on center. Most of the time my GTI is driven on highway. Replace the first set after clocked 66k km with 2.6mm of thread left. New set of PS4 is made in Thailand. First difference I had noticed is the straight line is slight wandering during high speed compared to previous set. This set of tyre clocked 25k km then I replaced with new set of wheel and tyre (19" pretoria wrapped with PS4S made in EU) PS4S definitely the best tyre to date. On center feel still calm but progressive build up as the steering turns. Straight line stability and tracking is improved a lot! @Jonathan looking forward to see comparison of different manufacturing plant e.g PS4 EU vs Thailand vs China.
Hello , I have Primacy 4 installed right now but I'm concerned if I switch to PS4s they will wear down very quickly compared to Primacy 4......what's your take on this ?
@@Gave-rf1hr hi, if you are switching to PS4S definitely it will wear down faster than primacy 4. In addition to that tyre noise will be increase and ride will be firmer. I’m using PS4S on my MK7 GTI 19” wheels mainly for more grip. As for me depends on your purpose.
@@NeoR3 It happened that my Primacy 4 (not plus) only lasted me about 16k km and I'm not even sure this is a good tread life or I could have expected more on them . I drove them normally nothing crazy I wanted to try something different but then I think I should stick again to Primacys , do you happen to know if PS5 last more than PS4s?
I’m a total Michelin believer, as we have 4S’s on both my E92 M3 and my wife’s GTI (235/40-18) and they are wonderful. Also have the Cup Sport 2 N1’s on my GT4, and that tire is epic!
For those who can’t decide between - (Allrounder) PS5 and - (sporty) PS4S: Take the Asymmetric6 ! I think it sits inbetween these both Michelins regarding the categories UHP and UUHP …quality is same on Goodyear and Michelin, and you can’t go wrong with multiple test winning Asym6
I've been using Michelin PS5 on my F30 for almost 2 months now. No joke it's great on dry and wet road, only problem is it's like I can feel the road surface. Not sure if it's my suspensions are bad but comparing to BMW's stock RFT, even the road lines can be felt but it's nothing serious. I'm not really concern about the noise because of my exhaust drone sound. Anyway, PS5 is worth even penny. It is kinda expensive here in Malaysia.
Brilliant review Thanks. It is fantastic to find someone who can talk so coherently about tyre chartacteristics, and even better that you have the skills (and facilities) to test them in a meaningful way. It is a pity (in a very narrow way) that tyres last so long, as with the amount of driving I do, I'm only changing tyres every three to five years, so have very little exposure to different tyre types and makes. Anyway, I followed your advice in 2019 to put PS4 tyres on my GTi, and 36,000km later, will be replacing the fronts with PS5's. I can't believe how good the PS4's have been. They grip like chewing gum and are relatively quiet, even on New Zealand's awful chip seal roads.
Great test as always! I really miss E Primacy here. Recently I had to buy new tires for my EV. I didn’t feel comfortable with going for low resistance tires because of lack of tests. I’m super happy with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 though.
I've just bought a set of PS5s for my worn out old diesel Superb, they seemed terrific value with the Michelin cash back offer in May making them about £90 each fitted. First impression was with the magic carpet type ride quality, that car has never ridden like that, but actual driving is going to have to wait for an alignment next week. It smashed it's last set of Hankooks to bits so I've got a local racing bloke doing the full real deal in a week. Good test, keep up the terrific work 🙂

Great video, thanks! As someone else has already mentioned, would love to see where the crossclimate 2 fits within this group, specifically wet weather performance and wear. I've been using PS4S for a few years, but as I only ever drive on the road, I've been considering harder wearing alternatives.

Love your content, great videos. Could you do a review on the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tire. I’m curious how they perform against the PS4S and the Pilot Super Sport which I had on my TT and loved them.
At the start of summer I bought Lexus GS 450h. It came with very worn winter tires. At first I thought I will just make with them until next winter ant just buy new winter tires. First rain changed that line of thought... Car was sliding a lot and I'm not risking crashing expensive car just because I have cheapened out on one tire fitting. At first I was thinking about PS5 (mainly because of your summer tire review), however I have 0 interest in taking my car into track. So I went with Primacy 4+. Coming from right after winter tire, they felt bit rough, however, after 2 months and couple of longer trips, now they softened a bit and now I'm pretty happy with them.
Absolutely bang on, both your analysis and Michelin's decision to stick to their guns re; the PS5. It's a fantastic road tyre, amazing in the wet and dry, just a bit average on track, and that's fine, it does it's job perfectly. I try and keep a set of PS4/5 and Cup2's for my car and they cover almost all bases.
The review I've been waiting for. Couldn't agree more with your results. I currently run ps4s on my xfr absolutely epic tyre for the car grip for days in wet and dry. I was running ps4 on my daily drive volvo estate, found the wear rate to be extremely high so have now switched to the primacy 4+. They seem to be a much better tyre for the car and feeling no real difference on day to day driving. Just hoping they don't wear out quite as quick as the ps4. Great review as always
@Gave-rf1hr Hello. The ps4 are a softer compound and my v70 d5 estate, which are renowned for going through tyres, ate them very quickly. I got 6000miles out of the fronts, compared to the primacy 4+, I've done 10k and 1.2 mil of usable wear left. So they have lasted better.
@@oliverlanchester2632 damn , I thought something was wrong with my Primacys 4 as they lasted me about 16k km so reading you it seems to be normal wear rate . Do you happen to know if PS5 last more than PS4S? I would like to try a sport tire but I wanna choose the one that would last longer
@Gave-rf1hr I have no experience with the ps5. I'm sure they will be pretty close to the ps4 in terms of grip vs wear. I rate the ps4 and the ps4s as a sport tyre, probably one of the best. Recently I've put conti premium sport contact 7s on my jaguar xfr. Done only 500 miles so far so no real conclusion
Have you looked into the comparison of load and speed ratings across the same tyre model. People often ask what the difference is on car forums and all sorts of stuff is thrown about. It would be interesting to see the real world data.
Finally a tyre test that represents northern Australia… it’s not unusual to have a 40 degree day followed by a thunderstorm in the afternoon. So hot wet braking is the real world for me. Thanks for data. ..I’ll be buying the PS5.
Can you do a test comparing new tyres and new old stock (unused or lightly used, but date stamped 5 (for example) years ago)? Always been told it’s not just tread depth that matters but age of the rubber, and would be interested to see by how much
Wow Bro you've made one of the best tyre review i ever saw. As that me too, engineering this review answer most of the question in my head, and today i've just accidently replacing my tyre due to the accident and spent some sec choosing btw ps5 and primacy 4 ......then i go with PS5. and your review put smile on my face for my quick decision
How about a review of oversized tyres. My 10” wheels currently have 275/35/19’s I fancy 285 or even 295 but wondered what it would do for the handling of my BMW Z4 M40i.
Just in Time! I was about to change my tires and was unsure what to go for. Michelin Primacy 4 was one of the 3 possible choices (Touring Premium of course). Well, Michelin Primacy 4+ it is. Better to spend a few more €€ on the tires than a lot of €€ on car repairs or worse.
@@tyrereviews Michelin tell us that their tyres are safe when new and safe as worn as well (unlike the others I believe). It would be really interesting to see a test with tyres half or a quarter tread left. And as we all know, with great power comes, great responsibility! 😁
The other year my track car broke just before I had Curborough booked for the day so I took my daily, a Mk1 Volvo V60 cross country awd 5 pot diesel with primacy 4's. But I am really impressed how you drive like a maniac at absolute limit and yet talk with ease and composure as if this was a sunday drive to the church or market LOL. ANyway I really think we need to see more test for the tyres when they are not only new, but at the half of their life and at the end. I have been advocating this and asking constantly magazines and others to, because that is equally if not even more important for us consumers in real life. So thank you very much for bringing that up in your videos - there really is a huge difference between them when they are used. Keeo up with fantastic content and - Cheers brother! P.S. - is there a link for that DEKRA PS5 test? I cant seem to find it anywhere and I do understand German :)
I'll try and dig out the dekra test, drop me an email. Worn testing is becoming a thing in the market, it's just frekaing expensive to do PROPERLY. Think 100k to get the tyres worn fairly
Great video, as ever. Loved the PS4 on my S4, the 255/35/19's had masses of grip and lasted about 18k. So I'll be going PS5 on the Clubman when the (225/40/18 RFT) Bridgestone S001's eventually wear. That being said, they've done 12k so far and still have over 5mm of tread, so could be a while.
I went for Goodyear F1 AS5 on my Clubman. The F1 AS series has better overall balance between wet and dry, cornering and braking. Never no. 1, but always in the top 3.
@@gepal7914 totally get where you’re coming from there, but with the increased longevity of the Michelin, I think that’s why I’d sway that way. I had AS3’s on my A3, and they were good, but the PS4 was Mike’s better - different generation of tyre and type of car though.
@@machtschnell7452 I mean, that comes down to driving style and roads driven. S4 was hammered on with mostly A and B roads (where safe to do so) and occasional hot lap (not really what the car was built for and brakes were the limiting time factor - even with RS5 upgrades, they would overheat and fade after decent lap or two). I’ve had other premium high performance tyres take much less abuse and last a far fewer miles on lighter, less powerful, cars. What might last 20k miles for one person may only last 10-15k for another, depending on use.
You have convinced me ps5 are the way to go for me on my 240i daily. Good alround that has excellent wear and efficiency. Can handle a track day if required but better on the road and every day driving. Perfect, all the information i needed nice and clear .
I know Michelin is one of your partners and allowed you use of their testing facility but comparisons like AD09 vs A052 vs A050 would be awesome. I’m loving the AD09 and think it could be the new standard to replace the PS4S as the default high performance street tyre! It’s potentially a “Cup 2” type tyre that will last longer and be better in the wet too 👏🏼

40 degrees and wet, finally a tyre test that's relevant to my local conditions... Tropical North Queensland
How do you like steering feel / feedback ?
How do you like highspeed stability above 150 kmh ?!
Is good to drive on rain to.
FYI - I had about 3mm of tread left on my PSS when i switched them.
Its wonderful to watch someone who so clearly enjoys what they do and the nerdy details of it.
Thank you sir :)
Let me know how you find them!
How did you find them? How comfortable are they over bumps and potholes compared to previous ones and how noisy or quiet are they?
Do they suit an S class? Looking between both the PS5 and the primacy 4+, the emphasis is safety and comfort. Not worried about performance as it is an S class. Leaning towards the Primacy, naturally. Your thoughts are much appreciated
@@MonsieurGuy I believe the 7 series had them as standard so it’s the natural choice for luxury
As someone who lives in a warmer climate (Queensland, Australia), I for one was happy that the testing was done on a warmer day as it was more applicable to me! 🙂
Also, really interested to see the extra data including the other brands as I was comparing to some of them, and my preference for the PS5 was confirmed independently.
Thanks for these videos, that are very informative, and really well presented and explained. 👍
I am sticking to Primacy 4 because low road noise is what I am looking for in tire options
all of these tire have low road noise.
Super happy, I just wish I had changed over sooner.
sounds like carbon buildup lol
Glad you're enjoying them, get a review on www.tyrereviews.com :D
I am thinking of changing from my Falkens to a set of pilot sport 5, which Falkens did you have on your car?

Thanks for the answer
@@jeronimjurakovic2919 I think you wouldn't loose any of the performance of PS4, but you would get more lifetime out of PS5. That's what Michelin claims, and I tend to believe them. I did not drive the PS4 so cannot say anything personally though.

Spot on.. One week with a set of 16" primacy 4.. Huge difference when compared to other brand.

Thank you!
Ran that set up on my golf r last summer, insane grip when you have temps. Aquaplaning at 65 in October but the read was super low
*tread
Keep up!

Glad you're enjoying it. The wear is out of this world now!
I hope you enjoy it!
How long did your pilot 4s sport last?
shame the asymmetrics don't come in my size. I'd love to give these bad boys a go
Have been running the PS5 for around 4000 miles on a mk5 Golf GTi through this years hot british summer.
Glad you like them! Get that information on www.tyrereviews.com sometime please as it's very valuable
How is comfort of the PS5 vs the PS4?
You’re bang on about the primacy 4+ being for the driver who wants a bit more comfort but still gets a very good tyre

The 4S is phenomenal, especially in the wet!
Really impressed of the worn state performance of Michelin. They sure know how to make great tires.

After watching the video: my expectations are met with some surprises for the results 👍👍
Love how you're such a tyre nerd. I have the same philosophy, the most important part of your car

Why do I love tire reviews so much?
One of us, one of us
The funny thing is, in the last 20 years, I have only purchased Michelin tires for my M3.
Which tyre? I have PS5 on my z4 2003 3.0L and very happy with them
I purchased PS5 for my GT86 off the back of this excellant review.
Very impressed by how objective you manage to make these comparison videos.

This set of tyre clocked 25k km then I replaced with new set of wheel and tyre (19" pretoria wrapped with PS4S made in EU)
PS4S definitely the best tyre to date. On center feel still calm but progressive build up as the steering turns. Straight line stability and tracking is improved a lot!
@Jonathan looking forward to see comparison of different manufacturing plant e.g PS4 EU vs Thailand vs China.
Great info, if you get some time you should put your reviews on www.tyrereviews.com :)
I drove them normally nothing crazy
I wanted to try something different but then I think I should stick again to Primacys , do you happen to know if PS5 last more than PS4s?
I’m a total Michelin believer, as we have 4S’s on both my E92 M3 and my wife’s GTI (235/40-18) and they are wonderful. Also have the Cup Sport 2 N1’s on my GT4, and that tire is epic!
All great car
what a car selection!
For those who can’t decide between
- (Allrounder) PS5 and
- (sporty) PS4S:
Take the Asymmetric6 !
I think it sits inbetween these both Michelins regarding the categories UHP and UUHP …quality is same on Goodyear and Michelin, and you can’t go wrong with multiple test winning Asym6
100% agree
Sidewall way too ugly.
It seems like you had a fun on this test! What a good comparison!
I could feel vibration from my PS5, fun to drive but not so comfortable.
Found this video just hours after ordering a set of 215/40/17 PS4s, makes me confident in choice
:D
I love Michelin tyres… recently, I have put PS5 on my car, love it…
Brilliant review Thanks.
E-Primacy are diabolical. Ditched a set after 4 weeks.
Asym 6 is the perfect choice, great rolling resistance, great performance
@@tyrereviews All thanks to your tests!
Good test, keep up the terrific work 🙂
Fascinating insight into tire technology , with very detailed explanations and comparisons . 👍
Glad you liked it!
@@tyrereviews I've said it before , your content makes the process of selecting tires easier for everyone .

The PS5 on my Honda S2000 really is a joy to drive with. Have done 10,000 kms and really enjoying the experience in wet and dry conditions.
Great video, thanks! As someone else has already mentioned, would love to see where the crossclimate 2 fits within this group, specifically wet weather performance and wear. I've been using PS4S for a few years, but as I only ever drive on the road, I've been considering harder wearing alternatives.
Had cross climates on my V6 Toyota Rav4 and and they only lasted 1 1/2 years. They didn’t like aggressive driving and had lacklustre winter performance(southern Ontario Canada).
However I’ve recommended them to others who have no problem with them.
Excellent review as always. Amazing to see the sidewalls moving across the rims in the corners.
I wouldn't choose PS5 over new Goodyear Eagle based on watching these tests.Another super detailed video 👌 👍
Just replaced PS5 with F1 As6, my whole face is a smile.
@@enmirc9938 I'm Still waiting for my Goodyear 5 to wear out, trying my best to hurry it up 😅
@@enmirc9938 in which categorie do you like the Asym6 more than the PS5 ?
@@vollcare4076 Less noise, and a little more traction in a straight line and much more grip in curves. All this in Greece with 40 degrees and octavia mk2
Another excellent summary outlining classic trade-offs.
Love your content, great videos. Could you do a review on the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tire. I’m curious how they perform against the PS4S and the Pilot Super Sport which I had on my TT and loved them.
I'm trying to work something out! Don't tire rack have a test with htem both in?
The primacy 4 were some amazing tires
Glad you're liking them, get some reviews on www.tyrereviews.com please :D
Hello , does the PS4 wear way quicker than Primacy 4 in your experience?
@Gave-rf1hr Hello.
The ps4 are a softer compound and my v70 d5 estate, which are renowned for going through tyres, ate them very quickly.
I got 6000miles out of the fronts, compared to the primacy 4+,
I've done 10k and 1.2 mil of usable wear left.
Crazy how at first glance they visually look the same but perform so differently. Its all in the tire compound
:D
Can you do a test comparing new tyres and new old stock (unused or lightly used, but date stamped 5 (for example) years ago)? Always been told it’s not just tread depth that matters but age of the rubber, and would be interested to see by how much
Been trying to find a set that have been unchanged over 5 years
Serbian car magazine has done this. /watch?v=g-H42vtDroM
My 10” wheels currently have 275/35/19’s
I fancy 285 or even 295 but wondered what it would do for the handling of my BMW Z4 M40i.
Finally! Been waiting for this! Just some comparison with Primacy 4 and this would be perfect!
You might want to watch it.. :D
@@tyrereviews I meant between the Primacy 4 and 4+, would there be any reason to choose the 4 over the 4+, like lower rolling resistance?
@@swecreations Ah, I understand, sorry. No there's no reason to buy the 4, the 4+ is very similar with improved worn state performance.
A great way of looking at it!
@@tyrereviews Michelin tell us that their tyres are safe when new and safe as worn as well (unlike the others I believe).
It would be really interesting to see a test with tyres half or a quarter tread left. That would provide the customer information we never had and perhaps desi courage manufacturers to build tyres specifically to Winn tests.
If someone has that power, it's you! And as we all know, with great power comes, great responsibility! 😁
The other year my track car broke just before I had Curborough booked for the day so I took my daily, a Mk1 Volvo V60 cross country awd 5 pot diesel with primacy 4's. They actually did surprise how well they handled the best part of a 2tonne car being thrown round a sprint track. No side wall writing by the end of the day though.....
Brilliant, I'm glad you still went!
I have a set of Primacy 4 on my 2015 GTD as do 20k per year. Great comfort and ride for soaking up miles.
I drove Primacy 3s up to 80.000km, down to 1.5mm thread.
I love it how you explain everything so everybody understands.
If my Michelin P4S did not get me comfortably past 20K miles I probably would not purchase them.
It’s potentially a “Cup 2” type tyre that will last longer and be better in the wet too 👏🏼
Email yokohama telling them that! I've been asking to do it for years...
