      Hi Mark 👋 I agree with other comments this is by far the best tutorial I have found. Related to all you said about buying or( more to the point) needing to buy a coffee every day. I have owned my touch oracle for at least 3 years now and rarely buy coffee now. I absolutely love it and yes it is right up there if not surpassing other cafe coffees. When it's finally brewed its last cup it will be replaced the same day. Cheers.

    When saving a new drink preset, does it let you save the grind size?

    • @MarksElectricLife
      @MarksElectricLife  3 года назад +1

      I'm afraid not ! It would not be very useful since the grind setting needs to be adjusted to allow for type of beans and how old they are. Even if you use the same bean all the time you still cannot just set a grind and use it every day. As the beans dry out you need to adjust to a finer setting, so a programmed setting would not work. Hopefully this makes sense. Mark.

    Thanks for the review. I have the same machine and love it just as much as you do. A couple of things to add ....... On the positive side, there is a separate hot water spout behind the group head which is very convenient for pre-heating your cups and for making Americano style long coffees. On the negative side, the complexity of the dual boiler system with all its probes and sensors has led to reliability issues with this machine. There are lots of tiny o-seals inside which can be prone to leaks and can cause serious issues with the electronics. The Breville/Sage warranty is 2 years, which is good, but be aware of the possibility of problems. I had a leak in mine after a year which was not visible externally but caused corrosion of the internal electronic board. Eventually, after a visit from the warranty team, the machine was replaced under warranty.

    • @mabulkhoudoud
      @mabulkhoudoud 2 года назад +1

      I had the same problem with mine. I owned the Oracle since 2015 which is the predecessor of this one. Breville replaced twice while it was under warranty due to the internal leaking then I sent the last one to be refurbished after just over two years due to leaking. That one lasted 6 months before it started to leak. when that happens the machine trips the circuit breaker and the machine is unusable.

      Totally agree - great machine - but if you use it a lot as we did - it needs service. Fortunately Breville is great at honoring their warranty. We have had ours serviced twice in two years - and that doesn’t sound unusual. I was pretty careful to flush and descale religiously - so I don’t think the problems were due to lack of routine maintenance on my part. It’s a great machine - and pays for itself in less than one year - but it is not uncommon to run into problems due to either scale or the seals leaking.

    You got robbed. That machine was around $2,200 3 years ago. Now is going for $2,700 because it seems Breville is trying to promote their beanz website. If you do the math, their 24 free bags at the 12-16 price tag makes up for the price increase. Too much for free beans with the purchase of the machine. I maintained and baby mine but these machines have a bad o-ring design on the dual boilers. They start leaking steam about the third year mark or so. It makes the machine trip and from there a lot of other issues. Is great when it works.

      Do you think the Oracle touch is better than the Oracle, or could I save some money by not buying the touch version?

  • @marcscholtes5556
    @marcscholtes5556 Год назад +1

    I have owned the Black Oracle (BES980BKS @ $2,500) with the silver dials and the Silver Oracle 'Touch' (BES990BSS @$3,400). Whilst both are essentially the same machine (the older BES980 having adjustment dials and the newer BES990 having a touch screen) and produce great coffee, I have to say that say that for me the 'Touch' was an expensive disappointment!! My reason for this is that the BES980 has the option of volume or time control for the coffee extraction, whereas the BES990 only appears to only have time control (the instructions or internet research certainly don't provide instructions on setting volume control!). In my experience, 30-second double-shot coffee extractions are so inconsistent (30ml-45ml) and, in the absence of volume control, I have to use a glass with 30ml marked on it so I can abort the coffee extraction as soon as the 30ml mark is reached (sometimes up to 5 seconds early!). I hope I am wrong and that you or someone else can advise me how. I could not recommend the 'Touch' if there is no volume control!

    • @MarksElectricLife
      @MarksElectricLife  Год назад

      Thanks Marc! A fair criticism, although I would say this. If your shot duration is being cut short (either by you or the machine) to achieve a 30ml volume, then the grind is probably too coarse and the flavour is likely to be thin and sour. In the end it comes down to knowing where the grind needs to be set for the specific beans you are using. Ideally, you want to get about 30ml at the end of 30s. Inconsistency will always happen because of the way beans behave as they dry out. Thanks for your input though! It's very interesting to here from someone who owns both machines. I personally think the BES980 is better value at -$900 and will probably get one if/when my machine dies.

    Fantastic review, and brings a touch of homesickness (Aussie in the US here). The coffee from this machine is better than most of the coffee available here in Chicago, though there’s a couple of places it equals including one from a company run by a Kiwi. It’s worth noting that all coffee is not equal…that roasted for American coffee is considerably more oily than Aussie/Kiwi/Italian style beans. In some coffee machines, this oil will impede the beans feeding into the grinder, and also tastes pretty average. Just something to note for the global audience. Again, top review, thanks mate!

    • @MarksElectricLife
      @MarksElectricLife  3 года назад +2

      Hey Dale, thanks for the positive feedback! My only experience of American coffee is Starbucks and frankly I'd rather drink my own urine! That's interesting, what you say about the beans. I always felt that Starbucks were over-roasting and burning their beans and that might explain why there is more oil coming out of them. If you can't find a good roaster in your town, you might try buying your beans raw and using a home roasting machine, like a Gene Cafe. I used to do this before good roasters arrived in my town. Well mate, I hope you make it back home to Oz eventually. Whatever you do, stay out of Starbucks !😉

      Thanks John for the positive feedback! So, the Touch model is great if you have many people to make coffee for because it can store custom brews. It is also a nice interface to look at and use. That said though, if I were buying tomorrow I would opt for the standard Oracle and save myself $1,000. I don't need the levels of customisation that the Touch affords, since I make the same two coffees every day. Good luck with your choice ! Mark.

      Hi Ramiz, a few other people have asked this question and you will find my responses in the comments below. In summary, I wouldn't recommend this machine if you intend selling coffee. It would be too slow to make coffees continuously throughout the day (5-10 mins per cup). It could be useful as a "courtesy coffee" machine in an office or showroom where you only need to make 10 or less coffees per hour.

    Really well considered review. I've owned the BES980 (non touch Oracle) since 2016. It is a great machine all round but I've found myself now wanting an upgrade so looking at ECM/Profitec/Rocket/Bezzera machines. They all do what is called HX (heat exchange) single boilers that allow you to steam and pull shots at the same time. I only recently found out that times have moved on since the original single boilers back in the day where you allowed had to have the boiler first reach steam temp for your milk, then you needed to purge the water in order to get the temp down towards correct brew temp.

    • @MarksElectricLife
      @MarksElectricLife  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Glen! I just had a quick look at the Profitec Pro 500. It has a similar price tag to the Touch but only one boiler. In the review video by Clive Coffee they acknowledge the fact that the heat exchanger is not as accurate at maintaining shot temperature as a dual boiler. So why would you chose this technology (price being equal)? Still, I'm sure these other machines can all make great coffee. Personally, I'm a bit lazy and prefer to have the automatic milk texturing of the Oracle. It means I can get on with making my breakfast while the machine does its thing. I'm usually taxturing 1/2 litre of milk each time (two cups) so that can take a while (2 min approx). Rather be doing other stuff than standing holding a jug and hoping not to overheat the milk. If you do get a new machine please drop a comment on how it compares. Cheers, Mark.

    • @JudoChop1
      @JudoChop1 3 года назад

      @@MarksElectricLife G'day. No I never go backwards when upgrading :) I'm looking at the dual boiler Profitec Pro 700. I was just bringing to your attention that many manufacturers produce HX boiler machines which allow the user to steam milk and pull shots at the same time. I guess my wider point was that this functionality is no longer exclusive to just dual boiler machines. Oracle BES980 retails for $2500. The Profitec Pro 700 I'm looking to upgrade to is around $4500 + $1500 for grinder. So definitely a big leap.

    Great video, I would add two things into the process, 1) Purge some of the coffee ground beans as there is old coffee from previous use from the day before. 2) Run the water thingy as well for a few seconds, it's like a pump that needs priming. I measured about a 50% difference in the volume output by doing this. This is a great machine. Our local repair person here in Hornsby (Sydney) told and showed me (April 2024) that Breville brought out a new boiler in Dec 2023. We had had many issues because of the old boiler (not a person), he replaced it for free out of warranty (I had an extended warranty from Bing Lee though). By the way the coffee in my opinion is better than most cafes. We use Aldi coffee at $15 a kilo and it is excellent, used to use Campos $50/kg and they are very comparable. Our machine is 5 years old in 2 months and the handle is still good. I liked the tip on putting the jug in the fridge, I'll try that tomorrow. I did buy a tamper (and it's a work of art) as well, but I did this as sometimes the machine throws a lot of extra coffee in the cup, but will try the smoothing out. Great video. And yes expensive initially but will pay for itself in no time. Plus I don't think its a good idea driving to the café topless in my boxer shorts, and my wife is not patient :). No coffee shops near anyway. 15 mins each way,
    One other thing I don't know about is setting the burr mechanical setting v the electronic setting on the side. I was told the electronic setting ie the wheel on the side is more a refinement compared to the mechanical setting on the burr itself. I was told to set the mechanical part at 6 which I believe is the factory default anyway. Any advise on this would be good. Oh, one other thing, the milk you use I've found influences the taste big time as well. Personal preference, I found GOLD (Australian) is great, but I'd imagine that any full cream milk is great, I haven't really compared them all so not an expert.

      Hi Tyrone, thanks for the positive feedback! No, I haven't had any reliability issues apart from the broken handle. That said, I did have some early problems when I bought the machine three years ago. Out of the box, my first machine would not hold my programmed coffee settings in memory. After turning it off and on the stored settings would disappear. Breville quickly replaced that machine under warranty but unfortunately the replacement machine had a different problem. It would over-fill the portafilter basket intermittently (some problem with the dose sensor I suspect). Anyway, Breville again replaced it and the third machine is the one I have today. It was quite a new product back then and I think they may have had some quality assurance issues in manufacturing. I would expect that to be sorted out by now. You will always hear of 'lemons' coming off the production line with any product. It may only be 1 in 1,000 but if it happens to you after you parted with $3,000 then it's pretty disappointing. But then, that's why you have a warranty, right ?
      I will add a maintenance video to my To Do list. Watch this space...

      I have had my Oracle Touch for nearly 4 years now and we use it every day, I think this is a great machine and has definitely paid for itself. The only problem I have had with it is the steam boiler developed a leak and after a while I would get water build up in the tool tray and on my bench I had to replace the O'ring seals in the steam boiler, when I was in there I replace all of the seals on both boilers, very easy job did myself at a cost of $38 for the parts. while I was working on it I replaced the group head seal also, problem fixed.
      For maintenance / cleaning very easy and you will find plenty of videos on you tube in regards to this process.

    What do you think of the Breville Barista Touch Impress Espresso Machine in comparison to the Oracle Touch?

    • @MarksElectricLife
      @MarksElectricLife  7 месяцев назад +1

      It looks like a good machine at half the price. What you're not getting (and not paying for) are dual boilers, automatic tamping and three PID temperature controllers (one for each boiler and one for the group head). The Breville Barista Touch Impress uses a "Thermojet" to heat water, which is a fancy kind of thermoblock. These systems don't provide constant steam pressure and volume. They can work ok for a single cup but not great for making mulitple coffees in a hurry. In the end you are paying half the price and getting less features. That said Breville make very good espresso machines and if the Breville Barista Touch Impress fits you budget I would go for it!

    Aside from the space consideration, I find the hopper bigger than I need even for the 2 coffees/day I make on mine. I usually don't fill it completely and prefer to keep no more than 1 weeks worth of beans in it as they become noticeably staler beyond that.

    • @TonyGiovany
      @TonyGiovany 3 года назад +2

      True. But the machine loses its consistency as the weight of the beans in the hopper becomes lighter without refilling. This results in popcorning which gives you an inconsistent grind. This is why I try to keep my hopper as full as possible. So gravity can do its thing.

    I use glass cups and pre heat them in the microwave 30 sec, before I make the latte. I see your cup is probably not microwave friendly thought.
    After frothing the milk I get a separate jug and hit the steam button again for two seconds before canceling it , this way the left over milk is emptied in the cup and doesn't spray all over the machine when it auto cleans plus you don't have milk stains/grime building up in the water waste catcher, just something I do. And than after the shot is finished run a single shot mode without the handle in to clean it of any coffee grinds that get left behind...just a few tips for anyone who might care..☺️
