This year I went back and replayed this whole game. It felt so fresh compared to racing games of today. The rivalries you build up in racing series, the way the different classes all felt unique, and just the entire vibe and vitriol you get for ravenwest, a faceless and voiceless entity. Arcade protection, I just wish there was more of exactly it.
The game was more of a “Jack of All Trades” track racer that somehow managed to make almost all of its disciplines feel very nice (especially the slower ones).
@@mrxbas the most fun car in my opinion was the demo derby car. Had a nice gripy slide that felt good to do, enough power to give it some pep, while being quite difficult to get perfect
Thanks to my repair man, I got to play this game in late 2009. He told me "I know you love racing games, so I installed a new one for you". I am glad he installed this master piece. To this day, in terms of feeling and overall atmosphere, this is the best racing game I have ever played. Thanks Codemasters for giving us this glorious game.
The game may not have as much as the others but the sheer quality of everything it has added on top of its timeless style, simple but very fun career and team management aspects makes this, truly, one of the best racing out there.
Very interesting, reminds me of how the music in Burnout 2: Point of Impact transforms as you use boost. Really added to the sense of speed, probably my favourite sound design in any arcade racing game. If only Gran Turismo 4 did this as well, where Oh Yeah plays louder every time you fail a test...
From all GRID games, Race Driver GRID still remains unbeatable, in terms of overall atmosphere. The gritty visuals, combined with the soundtracks, makes you feel the rush.
@@mrxbas I still have my modded GRID with some mods from many years back that removed all the yellow tint. I also noticed over time the higher the screen resolution the less blurred the picture by default looks like. Played it for a long time without all fx on as well, made the picture some much cleaner & crisper, but then again also no fancy lighting effects. I wish they would remaster it with all tracks from GRID 2 & Autosport added.
this video unironically made me wanna replay grid and actually do those ravenwest races. it's insane how powerful dynamic music can be, and especially impressive for a game that's 19 years old
The reason why i love grid so much is that it has really enjoyable vehicle physics and gameplay itself Lack of fine tuning features kinda helps this arcade physics And can't miss those nostalgic graphics
Yeah, I can't remember how I got GRID, but it kicks ass. Some of my favorite moments in racing games came from it, even saved a few clips of it & uploaded it years ago.
Need For Speed 3 Hot Pursuit (PS1/PC) , have dynamic music too according on what is happening between you and opponents. Besides "Race Driver GRID" and "Need For Speed 3 Hot Pursuit" i don't know or remember other racing game that have in-race music and dynamic at the same time.
I had a ps3 for a pretty long time because I couldn't afford a new gen console and I this became one of my favorite racing games ever, the newer racing games never brought me the amount of fun I had on this game, dirt 2 and 3.
This is it, this is what got me to buy the game, and now Im probably gonna buy the whole series once im done Just finished the game, its one of the best arcades for sure
The fact he set a WR duration the race is insane ._. Edit: and the dude is actually driving really dam good i'd be at lest 5-10 seconds behind him on the 1st lap if i was racing him
Honestly, GRID is a really good series. I had a lot of dun with GRID and GRID 2, and I recently bought GRID 2019 and GRID Legends. I don't think it's the best arcade racer, but it's up there with the best.
Codemasters just needed to upgrade the graphics and car lists for their games. Keep everything else the exact same, especially gameplay and damage models.
Judging by the emphasis on wearing headphones at the start, it refers to the dynamic soundtrack in this race, where it changes intensity depending where the player is, which the newer GRID games didn't really do, as well as other racing games. Also, the sense of speed is greater, the atmosphere is great and since GRID 1 had the most realistic damage system in the series and probably of all time, barring Richard Burns rally, Beamng and maybe Carmageddon, the races were tense as a simple crash in the duel pictured here could ruin your chances right there and then. For context in this vid, the player is in a duel with a Ravenwest driver, Ravenwest being the hardest to beat opponents in the whole game, so the dynamic soundtrack and atmosphere all culminate into probably not THE greatest of all time, but one of the greatest. TL;DR: The title calls this game the greatest of all time thanks to the atmosphere and stakes, which have yet to be replicated.
Awesome. How do you manage to be faster than Ravenwest on straights? Every time I'm in the lead they feel like they have 50+HP more than me even when my car is intact.
The car’s low top speed helps, as well as the better corner exits. I still struggled to properly keep up on the straights, though (as I barely gained any time even when slipstreaming).
I guess that's a good race for an arcade game 😏 OK for real no hate, it's a spectrum and I'm the kinda guy who prefers very realistic physics with super casual but close & fair racing. GRID's not there with physics and for example ACC or iRacing don't quite fulfil the casual bit.

Rece Driver: GRID is simply perfect.
It did the arcade track racing so well that there is literally no replacement outside of the GRID series itself.
NFS Prostreet did it pretty great too back in 2007

Nice wholesome story
Finally a fellow appreciator of the fine thing that grid and grid 2 were

Dynamic music is such an underrated feature it makes me want to make a racing game for the sole purpose of proving that it's important.
@@mrxbasYou don't need to, Split/Second Velocity fills that niche really well

Although I did change the graphics in this video to mitigate the "piss filter", it did look amazing at the time (and IMO still does).

Your pivot away from FPS into racing games is what I'm here for
So glad to see more of it!
Thanks, I have quite a few ideas for the next videos!
Race Driver: GRID was truly exceptional! I loved playing every minute of it. My favourite game in the entire franchise.
Moments like this made the game feel incredibly special!

Damn, it’s just like you’ve said, this is a great race. Came here from the retrospective video.

Love how you can see that they clearly took insperation from the long beach track.
Can’t wait for the complete video you are working on! Always loved this game and I still come back to it sometimes

I really want to learn how to make music like this.
Subtitles really add some depth to the video!
This video say why this game is perfect
At some point the music starts to speak latin like Ace Combat saga
New Gran Turismo 4 challenge. Beat the game without tuning/upgrading cars
Interesting and definitely doable, I’ll keep it in mind!
Love that game

Hi, new here, questions to be asked; what exactly was so special about this particular race to make grid the all time goat?
Judging by the emphasis on wearing headphones at the start, it refers to the dynamic soundtrack in this race, where it changes intensity depending where the player is, which the newer GRID games didn't really do, as well as other racing games.

i need no headphones I have a good old ThinkPad laptop
I can't even enjoy the game when it randomly drops to 10 frames and the textures just end up disappearing
This race proves that AI in this game was scripted just like now in Forza Motorsport games.
