My best Friend owned one of them. We flew somewhere almost every week for the $100 burger. It was fast and comfortable and a dream to fly. His annuals cost him 10K most years. Longest flight we took was to Osh Kosh from Riverside CA.
That 400 was a TURKEY,Got to fly my pals new 1964 250. .3 of us went ZAHNS to MIA. Way back we did a front starting at 10,000 .My first actual IFR. Got some water in through the vents
Just have to wonder why its no longer produced. A 300hp. version would be nice with standard suto. pilot . a Turbo. with ox. tank another option.. It is a pretty airplane.
The Piper factory in Lock Haven actually flooded in 1972 destroying airframes, tools, and parts for the PA-24 Comanche and PA-30/39 Twin Comanche so they decided to discontinue those planes and keep making the PA-28 Arrow and PA-34 Seneca in Florida.
They actually did have a 300 hp prototype. There were also some 400 hp models produced, but their cruise speeds were low for that kind of horsepower (fuel burn).
GeneralSirDouglasMcA Ya, my uncle's A&P owns a 400 Comanche, he loves it but the fuel burn is ridiculous. Though it's useful load and Rate of Climb make it a very good cross-country plane if you can afford to fill it's 130 gallon tanks. There's a reason only 148 were built and only 85 still fly.
***** Yes, the Comanche 250 was known as the "Poor Mans Bonanza", it cost around $ 8,000 less than the bonanza ($65,000 today). However it cruised about 20 knots slower than the bonanza. If you would like more information here's the link to my high school presentation on the Comanche: docs.google.com/presentation/d/1liPdZpQzA8E9zgOj1lq-7DaF2d_r2txPlhRVCBX64fo/edit?usp=sharing
It is NOT meant to carry 6 adult passengers. The NTSB found that the weight exceeded limits and so did CG. Also, density altitude was high and led to poor performance. Pilot negligence was the cause here. Regulations are made to protect bystanders. Sadly, when they weren't complied with, everybody payed the price. Hopefully, it was a wake-up call for some pilots.

Comanche's were great airplanes............!
taos 87529 ... they ARE great airplanes lol. I own one and it is a phenomenal aircraft.
Nice video! Where did this flight take place?
Bruce Smith Charlie Baker airport north of Memphis, TN.
I think the 180 cruises about the same as the 250, and burns less fuel! I would rather trade economy, over climb and payload capability. 👍🏻
the 180 is AT LEAST 20 (more like 23) knots slower than a 250.... I have flown both.... a LOT
Nice video. From comment below, I guess this is a Piper Comanche 250. Is that correct?

Is there any sound so we know what is happening??
I don;t think that thing is a Comanche. Looks like an old Cessna 140
Is a 250? I flight a 250 in Argentina!
Any difficulty getting aviation fuel 100LL or are you running on autofuel?
this is the same model plane 6 people in AZ. were killed when it crashed on a golf course 4/10/18 rip

Claude, it's a 180, built in 1960. The plane is a lot of fun to fly and nice to look at!
