Escaping a Flash Flood in our Toyota AE86 and GTI // Road to Enlightenment Ep.2

- Опубликовано: 6 май 2023
- The adventures of Toe Foo and Schnitz continue! The two ‘80’s hatchbacks Thomas and James just bought are about to embark on the most treacherous leg of their journey yet. James’ 1986 Toyota Corolla AE86 cost more than double what Thomas paid for his 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI. When Thomas finds this out and learns that James has been lying to him, he has the whole team change course and camp for a night to save money. However, Thomas’ campsite of choice is at the end of a long and unpaved road that he has little information about. When camping, they say to expect the unexpected. However no one could have expected just how long this day would be. We hope you enjoy Episode Two of the Road to Enlightenment!

Again, we're totally blown away by your comments. This was a real adventure for us, and it's awesome so many of you are coming along for the ride. Episode 3 is hopefully going to be just as epic! And of course, this whole journey wouldn't have been possible without the support of Autotempest. So go to this link, peruse a ton of used car sites, and show them some love!

I've been letting these videos just play through multiple times on my phone while at work just for the views. This type of content and the amount of work spent to create it is deserving of way more views!
Tell Thomas his choice for the car's name was great. The word "Schnitzel" is derived from "Schnitz".
And "Schnitz" means "slice".
It's related to the verbs "schneiden"/"to cut" and "schnitzen"/"to carve".
So he really schnitzed his way through that canyon. ;)
36k is a s550 mustang gt or cheaper a older civic all sorted with a turbo which would be a very enjoyable lightweight especially a 1990 hatch si or not you with a B16 and turbo swap
and that’s how The Grand Gear or The Top Tour was born. Already Legends!
What was the name of the last town you visited before that treacherous road, and what was the name of that road leading to the campsite so that I can NEVER take that road.
Absolutely loving this series. Some of the best stuff on youtube
jshleg
sorry WHAT
their production value is so good, reminds me of old Top Gear fun
nahh the man jschlatt is watching Throttle House? W
Big guy himself
I believe schnitz and toe foo already had more offroad time than most of the wrangler sold in the US 😂
Truth! This is why I have an 2005 Raptor-lined exterior 4Runner and a 2018 Kia Stinger GT. My 4Runner has been to many places similar and much more difficult to access than what we have seen here and my Stinger satisfies the sporty side of automotive enthusiasm. Hammers and screwdrivers-these lads just used the handle side of a screwdriver to hammer a nail instead of using the proper tool. Analogy concluded.
@@CrescentKnife those stingers are a blast man I’d love to get one
@Paul i would say 90% of the 4 runner sold in the last 5 years have not ever clicked into 4 high
or any truck for that matter
@@CrescentKnife I don't know about that specific Toyota, but I used to drive 80s Corollas in all kinds of terrain. I even took a 2024 hybrid model to a muddy and rocky forest path. It didn't handle it as well as the 80s ones. Anti-skid system also almost stopped the whole car, but I found the button to turn it off fast enough. Wheel wells were unclipped and it got some weird electric problems for few days. But those 80s Toyotas had no problems in same kind of terrain.
$36k CAD for a beams swapped AE86 with watanabes is still an outrageously amazing deal. Im calling cap on that, I think James spent even more lmao
HAHA SPOILERS
But it's not. One of the biggest point of simple old sporty shitboxes is their affordability. Price to fun ratio. Same for modern affordable sport cars. You cant get a good 718 and you buy MX-5 instead, having arguably even more fun with it. AE86 is good, but not 36k CAD good. Not even 10k CAD good to be honest. One shitty anime made it cost that much and it's not ok. Current day young car enthusiasts gradually stopped caring for tuner-era Japanese cars like S15 simply because contrary to original idea they became prohibitively expensive to own and modify. This is stupid amount of money for this car.
I don't think those are Wat's. To be honest I think they're XXR wheels. For nearly $50k after fees and his upgrades, that car should be fkn mint and there shouldn't be any issues that would keep it from making the journey. No overheating, should have ac/heat, upgraded brakes, and the beams swap shouldn't have the notch cut out of the cover or the low oil pan issue.
I do know that the beams sits either low or high depending on how you fit it in the car you can either lower the subframe an inch or massage the transmission tunnel but there will be trouble with the hood closing so you have to remove some of the hood bracing. If I'm not mistaken, I think someone has created a shallower oil pan so it doesn't sit so low.
I haven't done a beams swap on my ae86, I have a 20v swap, but I've read write-ups and have friends who've done it.
Nah, that's cope, Initial-D fanboys have overpriced this car way too much.
I’m so sick of you all talking about the anime bro no one cares about the anime this car is expensive because it was one of the first ever drift cars and most of them were wrecked like all 80-90s rwd jap cars so the numbers are pretty low now and it’s 35 years old, why do you think any classic cars are expensive Jesus get the anime out of your brain these cars were massively popular long before the anime you plebs
50k for a broken Japanese tofu hatchback?
James: yeah sure it’s alright
Whoever did the Beams swap must have not known what they were doing.
any day
@@JoshQuill I'd say if you actually get an engine that's that big to fit and drive, you already know what you're doing.
Crazy idea to pay so much for this piece of shXt. It's only a Toyota, no matter what engine is in it...

Throttle House has now officially become the benchmark for all other automotive review media, hands down. The journey, the story, the cinematography, the editing. Absolute perfection!
I wouldn't call it best review but rather best entertainment. But yeah whatever they are they are up there.
They are basically filling the gap that Top Gear / Grand Tour has left and those two shows were by far my favourite viewing for anything car related. I could not care less about endless drag races, i love this style of show
They are fine, but benchmark? They have completely ripped off top-gear. Everything is scripted in this.
@@TheBowerbird I'm referring to the channel as a whole. The adventure thing is icing on the cake.
@@TheBowerbird Versus the usual How fast can the car do the quarter mile this is amazing. Grand Tour is better for me, its subjective but most would agree but for a YT channel to produce this quality is pretty amazing.
This series perfectly fills the void in my heart top gear specials left behind. The chemistry, the cinematography, the pacing, the challenge and most importantly the cars. I completely forgot I was on RUclips for almost an hour and rather watching something produced by Amazon prime or Netflix. Hope to see more adventures like this in future!
And the lack of toxic bullshit is refreshing!
Exactly!
Shoutout Harrison, the real MVP. Delivering great audio quality and car electronics diagnosting.
I love that this series is being released simultaneously as gears and gasoline’s kei car road trip
hope they do a review road trip with a pulsar gti-r and a wrc corolla

@@sohailmuhammadrafiq1053 Found it, thanks
Yeah me too
RIGHT!! All with lil cars too!
The in between animations on the route are beautifully made
Seriously
YOU'RE beautifully made 😏😉
If someone had asked me what it would take to create a successful “road trip special” in the mold of the original Top Gear, I would have said they’d need extremely creative writers, extraordinary on-camera personalities and chemistry, and stunning production. Even with all that, they’d still need some mysterious extra magic element to really make it work… Well, the Throttle House crew didn’t bother to ask me. They were too busy making this outstanding content. Absolutely perfect!
This has old Top Gear vibe that I love, except it's US road trip and it's free to watch.
Don’t stop making this series! Last two videos are my favorite videos you guys made so far.
Well, it is atleast different, and great. but the others are much mroe informative, which is typically what i use this channel for- knowledge about specific cars. But this is great entertainment for sure.
Yup!
As much as I admire the Arizona's scenery, I am sure they know as well, the vistas in Utah and Colorado (just a river away) are even more stunning (and weel above Yosemite - altidute-wise too).
@@jull444 K
As a native Arizonian, it makes me happy to see you guys enjoying this beautiful state. Arizona is one of the most diverse states in the country. From deserts to the south, to forest covered mountains, and canyons to the north.
California like 🧍🏻♀️
What’s the name of that off-road
But no ocean front property?
Any idea what road they're on?
@@Wrencher_86 They said it's one of the only roads that goes to the bottom of the grand canyon. The bottom of it also meets with the Colorado River. I'm sure you could do some detective work and piece it together 🤷
I definitely want to see a sequel to this where you guys upgrade/ restore these cars and do a Canadian road trip in the summer weather.
Honestly the plate at the bottom of the AE86's engine @ 25:59 flopping around sounds like an old cammed mustang 😂
I don't think we need to call this "Top Gear Vibes". From now on, all future videos will give Throttle House vibes, you are the kings now 👑
All stand for the new kings of the car world!
I am getting Car Trek vibes. Seems to be the AutoTempest formula. Making them cookie cutter now.
Definitely man, they are their own league now, top gear nah, throttle house style, hell
Yeah im in
True words! Throttle House Vibes!!
The most important coronation of the week
Driving off-road away from civilization is always an adventure. I promise one day you'll look back at this and love every bit of the trip (except maybe the $50k revelation). One time I took a friend up to a campsite about 12,000 feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountains. We had a stock 4x4 truck and it was a blast. Saw beautiful scenery and some animals. We got there in the evening and set up our tents. We were the only ones at this mountain lake and surrounded by a beautiful mountain range. The trail was about 2 hours from our house, and the ride up was about another hour. When it got dark, we finally laid down and we found we were so high in elevation that when we laid down we got light headed and dizzy. We tried sleeping in the truck, without any change. About 11pm that night, we finally decided we would have to drive home. We got home about 3am utterly exhausted. Better believe we weren't happy about it then, but we sure laugh about it now!
I could very much relate to the teeth gritting experience of driving on bad roads in the middle of nowhere in a hard riding lowered sportscar. It's not a good feeling. Tbh i would've admitted defeat early on and just looked for a flat place to set up camp. It's crazy how different experience it is traveling on those types of road in a stock subaru outback vs an mx-5
While climbing Mt Shasta I spent the nite at our base camp and sleep was terrible... then the headaches kicked in ....miserable night for all...one guy had altitude sickness and threw up for hours ...
@@Nathan_Kingthat’s not true though. 9/10 times it’s the dehydration that comes with altitude. As someone who once or twice a year goes up to 11k+ feet above sea level from 1,800 down here in Kansas, it’s all in hydration and eating right the week leading up. Even the few times I’ve gotten altitude sickness in the past couple years were fixed by water and a Tylenol
how am i just seeing this. how did this not BLOW THE F UP! such a great special. loved it.
I love how the delirium kicks in after exhaustion and how hard Thomas was laughing at James' car. Almost like a Big Brother teasing a little brother while having the time of their lives.
Honestly guys, you need to do more trips like this. It’s been so much fun to watch and is so well produced, a real credit to all the team involved. Can’t wait for the final episode 😂
Only pzzyz use heaters
Get a funny vilain(jeremey clarckson-esque), and be the new top gear.
I'm so glad you were able to show the incredible diversity of my native state of Arizona. So many people think it's just a desert. Wish I could have met you guys while you were here, but thanks for all the nice comments about this incredible state
Same here! Woulda been fun to get a beer! Hahaha
I think what makes this one of the best non 'Clarkson/Hammond/May' road-trips ever, is how much mire understated, subtle and less brash and bombastic every other Top Gear clone tries to be. This is genuinely interesting, entertaining without forced laughter, loud noises cos you know loud=funny and it's just got that old Top Gear 'vibe'. I can't put my finger on it, but some of the shots, music choices, more 'real' feeling script and a certain level of charm make this really entertaining. If the 'Trio' are retired, let's face it they basically are, then Thomas and James are carrying the torch, alongwith Alex Kersten. Great series, keep it up boys
“We go fast along and long together”
On my PlayStation and Steering Wheel, I would drive my favorite cars featured in car and driver and then mimic their experiences. Then, at a young age, would mail my writing to car and driver.
Years later, I started writing car articles and counseling young military members on the importance of credit, interest rates and living in your means.
You’re channel is a reminder of following dreams, doing what you love, never looking back, and why not?
I’ve been watching your channel, thinking of applying to automotive journalist companies, and decided today - I will - but might make my own.
I can’t wait for your production to get to the level of peak cinematography.
Proud of you two knuckleheads.
The chemistry, the drama, the cinematography, the sound design. It's all beautiful
As someone who doesn’t comment a lot on RUclips, I’m writing this half an hour after watching since I just can’t get my head around how great this video and series is. It hits very close to when OG Top Gear was at their best, but without feeling to scripted or cringy. This is an absolute masterpiece and I can not wait for the next episode.
Thank you!
I Frikken know!!!! I cannot wait!
Making poor decisions and tempting fate is exactly the best kind of adventure. You guys killed it so far with this series. Love it!
I don’t comment on RUclips often but this series merits it. I am a total Top Gear refugee. And the grand tour lived up to the original. But I always felt a little bit guilty. This series proves that you guys are completely up to the challenge of creating a true car adventure show but doing it without the not so casual racism and homophobia. I’ll sure as hell but my next car through autotempest if they’ll help guarantee more fantastic, genuine, car reviews and adventures like this one. Thanks guys. For real, you’re a credit to the genre.
Best car series on yt

Yess, I mostly ignore other channels that show up on my suggested watch page. It's funny because I'm almost offended it's not just throttle house being suggested 😂😂

Great vid! Thomas pays $16,000, everything works! James pays $48,000, doesn’t realize he’s missing his sun visor until well into the trip! 😂😂😂
He also missed a whole gear somehow. Which makes no sense.

I've long considered you guys the spiritual successor to the 'good old days' of Top Gear. This kinda seals it. Great work.
Can we just take a minute to *really* appreciate the production value here? I mean, really - excellent job chaps! Incredible stuff.
I’ve been watching car content on RUclips for over 10 years, this was one of the best things I’ve ever watched. I have never left a comment before, but was compelled as it should be recognised and hopefully goads these guys to make more adventurous content like this in the future.
This is the best series ever, reminds me of Top Gear. You gotta continue, you have to travel the world now. Keep up with the good work guys
I'm in love with that GTI. The first two generations were imperfectly perfect.
Awesome awesome awesome
You boys are hitting grand tour level with this one!
This was absolutely amazing. The shenanigans, the misfortune, the adventure. Throttle House and crew, keep setting the bar higher!
Can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying this road trip guys 👍🏻🏴
45:50 that's actually exactly the reason why you are making better progress on these roads at night. I had the same experience on a jungle road in Cameroon at night a couple years ago. I was absolutely flying down this road (at night and rain) because I could see the shadows of the bumps way ahead.
Makes me very happy somehow to see you guys having the same experience.
Kudos to the video team. The b-roll supports the story so well without excess. It’s just perfect storytelling.
Wow, what a wonderful episode to a great series! I loved this, hands down my favorite top gear style episode on RUclips. Something about these cars getting through this terrain and your shear commitment to getting in and out of there together, wow.
This series is the best thing I’ve watched on RUclips recently. Incredible work fellas.
Was watching TV then got a notification and found what should actually be on TV currently. You blokes are amazing.
I am aware of how much work and time went into making this enlightenment series but it's absolutely worth it! So many laugh out loud moments and two beautiful classic cars, reminds me of when Top Gear (Clarkson and Co.) was funny and watchable. Thank you so much TH
This is truly an awesome series. Incredible, you both should be so proud. Some of the best content--not just on RUclips or the internet--just anywhere.
This series is…. FANTASTIC! Please do more, absolutely loving it. You guys are the next top gear and more.
Amazed that you can get this type of content for free. Awesome work guys! You deserve your own series on a streaming platform
Yes yes and yes. That top gear vibe is strong with this one
love the fact that Thomas's last name is related to the Dutch, and James's last name being a literal translation to Englishman from Dutch :D
It’s awesome to see you guys “enjoying” a drive through my home state! I sometimes forget to appreciate the beautiful scenery we have here because I’m used to it. Seeing two of my favorite RUclipsrs gasp and awe at the views is really cool!
Throttlehouse has never been this entertaining to watch! Would love to have a series like this at least once a year :D
I'm 15 mins into this, and I'll say it on this episode like I did the previous episode: I'd have paid for this via Patreon or something. that plate bouncing on the ground was THE EXACT noise my exhaust made when it half fell off my car while driving...ahhh nostalgia
Great work guys. So cool that you went to one of my most favourite locations in North America. Absolutely breathtaking. Glad you paid heed to the flood warning. Proud of my fellow Canucks.🇨🇦👍
Those series are honestly so good. Such a journey, props to the camera crew aswell, they are doing a fantastic job!

This is an amazing series! Glad you guys liked my home state and hometown of Flagstaff AZ! ❤ thanks for coming and glad I saw you guys 😊
I wasnt sure about this at first but i loved it! Great job guys! Kinds of reminds me of the old top gear when it was great. You guys did amazing and thanks to everyone who helped make this adventure happen. ! I would love to see more videos like this in old beater cars.
This was an amazing episode! I feel like the biggest compliment I can give is that I kept looking for a third car, but at the same time not being disappointed it wasn't there. It felt so often like I was watching you guys film a Top Gear special, which I know is the inspiration behind these adventures. That night drive under those conditions looked stressful as heck.
If someone showed me this for the first time, I'd have no clue it was a RUclips video. This is top notch! My compliments to you guys and the crew!
So much fun to watch - legit entertaining and the production quality was absolutely off world - kudos to you both. Probably (not probably) the best car content on any platform currently.
I’ve absolutely loved you guys since the moment I found this channel. I mean I still go this day watch top gear episodes multiple times every week. I can’t begin to thank y’all enough for the incredible work and content you all manage to put together and this is by far my favorite. Funny enough the last couple of weeks I had been wonder if someone could turn y’all into an actual television/streaming series and then y’all put these out. Just incredible and I’ve been laughing my ass off the entire time. Your typical reviews are a 12 out of 10 but somehow you’ve managed to exceed that. Thank you to entire team.
You guys have officially eclipsed Top Gear in my heart with this series. Love it. Thanks for all your work, guys

Lol absolute recency bias. Top Gear created the genre, it takes a lot more than making a RUclips copy to surpass it.
This gave me fond memories of my dad taking me fishing and camping. He had little hatch back civic from about the same year as these cars and we’d take it on backroads just like this one… right here in AZ!! Best times ever! The closest cover of Top Gear. Congrats to Throttle House for the effort and the typical humor that a car show needs to have. Happy viewer here, you two are benchmark of how a tv series, car reviews need to be made. Stay healthy and strong. @Throttle House

As a true fan, I’m trying to write this in proper English for RUclips purposes. But you guys are my favorite and your friendship really keeps me a solid person: I’d love to see more adventures of you guys testing different class vehicles. I love the car reviews too but this entertainment is unbeatable. If y’all can make it through hours of driving through unfavorable roads together then you can do anything. Can’t wait to see more. I love you Thomas and James no homo (written by a drunk guy who loves voodoo ranger)
This kind of reminds me of the trip I and my family had years ago offroading through mountains and deserts in our '98 Toyota Corollas in Afghanistan. There were uphills that only animals could climb. My uncle did an amazing job of driving a low car with 4 passengers the entire time and keeping the fuel pipe safe. We would get stuck and push or pull our cars up the mountain. I couldn't recognize myself or my clothes by the end of it because of how dusty we had gotten. It was an adventure nonetheless.
Been watching since the early E46 video days, and I'm always blown away with how great this channel has become. Loved this episode!

This is such an awesome series. Seriously entertaining and great presentation. I would 100% watch more of these
This mini series is so fantastic. Please do more of these road trip episodes!!
This is just so good! I like the almost no script thing (as compared to late “real” top gear that was 110% script) which makes me feel almost as part of the genuine “low budget” adventure. That I think is the secret sauce that makes it good (and early top gear specials). Keep it this way guys! If nothing “extraordinary” happens, the journey it self if sooo worth it anyways. The drama is just bonus. ❤
