    For people learning to do brakes watching this, this is a great guide! But please beg borrow or steal a torque wrench and tighten your caliper bolts to OEM spec! Amesie and other seasoned mechanics have already had years of trial and error finding backed off bolts. Every car is different, some are 80nm some are 180nm! Not worth learning the dangerous way, especially if it is someone else’s car, hurting your reputation. Thanks Amesie 👍

    One step left out is one a shadetree guy will likely do: Before driving pump the brakes back up. Have seen guys back out, hit the brakes and pedal goes to the floor an they hit something ;)

    It’s usually a good idea to check the fluid level before you push in the caliper pistons; if the owner topped it off, along the way, you’ll overflow onto the underhood area and the ground. They’ll have a nasty smell for a while, too.

  • @djambrosia
    @djambrosia 6 лет назад +10

    The only two other things I do are checking the brake fluid level and I also treat the area behind the caliper hardware.

    • @picoboo5048
      @picoboo5048 6 лет назад +2

      djambrosia I also apply brake lube to the caliper ears and on the piston faces. Lube anything that is metal to metal contact.

  • @bantz001
    @bantz001 6 лет назад +2

    The fluid film is a nice idea behind the rotor. I've accomplished something similar with using anti-sieze both on the hub face and rotor face. It stays in place, doesn't add solid mass, and it allows the rotor/wheel to come off next time. If you catch it before it's gotten to the rusted stage, there's no chance of the surfaces being "lumpy," not that huge amounts of material are coming off.

    Encapsulated wire wheels work wonders on cleaning up the caliper brackets. It's like a wire wheel in jelly so you dont get poked by the flying wires, works damn good for cleaning caliper brackets! Also the purple permatex can swell some rubbers but is great for lubing the hardware, sil glyde silicon lube is the best stuff for the slide pins! But great video!

      A pro has a good feel for torque, but there are times to use a torque wrench.
      Feel and readings can be disrupted by reused rusty fasteners, both through human error (though less likely) or especially a torque wrench that dampens the direct feel of something binding vs tightening. Personally, I used a torque wrench more in the past and I've learned which bolt applications are more critical to nail.

    this shadetree wannebe woulda continued to use them rotors, the rotors on my truck make those look new. but then I can't afford to replace the rotors on the truck every year for the amount of time it sits. Even the rotors on the Caprice were far worse years ago and the car stopped fine. would chew threw pads a little quicker but at 150 bucks a rotor they ain't cheap. and when you change rotors one feels compelled to change the bearings as well. on that car we did change the whole set ( rotors, bearings, calipers, hoses and pads this past summer. ) I use anti-seize between the hubs and my aluminum wheels after having a real problem a few years back just taking te wheels off. . I really don't care if the brakes squeal a little because they aren't perfect. lol. let 'em squeal a little. takes me like an hour per side. the brake shoes on all 3 of my vehicles on the other hand.. those springs are getting mean on my arthritic hands.

    • @AmesiesCorner
      @AmesiesCorner  6 месяцев назад

      That's light bulbs not brake pads. Brakes take a lot of contaminaton when being driven. The air vanes in the rotors suck a lot of what you're driving through. I've seen pads be fine after repairing a leaking axle seal completly soaked in gear lube. Also most rotors have a bed in coating on them that the pads have to rub off and takes whatever is on them off.

      It's a needle scaler.
      I get tools from a tool truck that comes to me.
      I figured if people are watching RUclips they can google the best place for them to get tools from..
