Honestly, looking at his position. If you go to a contender now, there is very little chance you end up in the NHL right away, along with the fact that if you do, if will likely be a very limited role. If you go to a really weak team, you are setting yourself up for individual success and development. Less chance you end up buried in the AHL due to the main roster being filled by solidified talents, and you get a chance on a really weak team to prove yourself as a good player. Not only does it give him a shot to potentially get top 6 or at least top 9 forward experience out of the gate, if he really gets going and plays good consistently he could be looked at as a central piece in their rebuild. Sets the player up for the best possible development curve from an experience standpoint and gives him a shot to really benefit his wallet if he plays good too.

Toronto would have him on the 2nd line and 2nd PP to start the year in 25 and likely 3rd or 4th line in the playoffs with any injuries, similar to Knies last year.
Bunch of east teams looking for a top 6 affordable forward next year because of cap implications

This is smart as the sharks will get the top 5 picks this upcoming offseason. Graf is a good player and I could see him fitting great in the 3rd line. It might take a little while before this team can get good but snagging a good goalie might elevate them to a solid contender. He likely signed there to be "the guy", which I get. However, he's never played an NHL game, and the move from NCAA to the NHL is a steep curve. If he spends time in the AHL for a season or two, that's fine, but if he thinks he's going to jump into the NHL from NCAA, he's likely in for a rough transition. While Knies has plenty of potential, he likely should have spent at least a season in the AHL. Having NCAA players play their first games in top 6 roles is rarely a recipe for success (at least early on). Knies is doing ok in his debut, but I worry his development may be hindered throwing him into the fire so quickly. Plenty of quality young players have been ruined by rushing them too soon.

Now for Young Graf to go to the Sharks who lets be serious have lower expectations but are still a thoroughly professional set-up might be just what he & the Sharks need, A way into the NHL, serious but not hopefully microscopic! Who can forget Bedard's mom being heavily trolled for no reason other than petty stupidity? You know who you are & should be ashamed for all time!!
