NIKON F3 REVIEW | The Ferrari of 35mm Film Cameras

- This is a tutorial and review for the Nikon F3 camera. The F3 is a classic 35mm SLR film camera, with a reputation for durability and excellent controls (like an awesome shutter sound). In this video I cover some common questions - such as loading film, what battery to use, and what lens options are available for the F3.

Correction: there are some AI and AIS lenses that have the rabbit ears, so this is not a telltale sign of a non-AI lens as I mistakenly said.
Here's the trick: "rabbit ear lenses" with holes in them are AI; the solid ones are not.
Easier trick: if it has 2 sets of aperture markings, it's an AI lens. The second set is there so the photographer can see the aperture setting in the viewfinder.
..Joe
Plus, if the lowest aperture number is in "orange" then it is an AI-S, if it is blue then it is an AI.
@@hugoalvarado8697 If it's blue it's AI AND f16, brown is f22. With Nikon everything has its colour.
this is the best tutorial for f3 among the ones I have seen, great work!
I never attempt to try other modes but A before watching your video, and now I want to shoot with other modes, your video teaches me many useful things about f3, and I'm so proud of having it now.
This is the best and most informative review on the camera I've watched today. Just bought my F3, and this video made me so excited to start shooting!
+Sarah Jere That's awesome Sarah! Hope you enjoy your F3 :)
Thank you Dan, very interesting video, very helpful! I will get mine for Christmas and I know for sure I won't be disappointed!
Great video Dan! The F3 is on my wish list. Awesome job on the improved video production too. I work as a television editor here in Colorado, and I'm impressed with what you put together.
Thank you Sean! I really appreciate that!
I agree and love this Camera! Driving an Alfa GTV6 while wearing a Seiko Giugiaro Ripley and shooting with a Nikon F3 🤤😍 however, it’s way more usable and functional than a 80’s Ferrari! ;)
I agree with another poster that this is the best instructional video I have seen on the F3. Well Done! My camera doesn't look as nice as yours. Bought it used in the 1990s in Ugly Condition but still works.
Best Review on the F3 🔥👌🏻
Nicely done. Legendary camera.
Thank you Ade!
Nice video! It's also my favorite camera. Just feels great shooting with it.
Thanks! Yeah absolutely! Nothing quite like the experience of shooting with the F3
Just bought my F3 right after selling my FM10, it is definitely my dream SLR to shoot with... it just look so elegant
@DEREK O’NEIL I sold my F3 because of its high resale value and bought an F2 for 30$, best purchase of mine so far. I agree with you that it has a better design as well.
Great video, Dan!
+Felix Estrada Thank you!
Awesome video! Really helped :)
+Matt Moloney Thanks Matt!
You have made a big mistake when you said the F3 can't work with lenses with rabbit ears on aperture ring. That is AIs lenses and it very much does work with Ai and Ais. Non AIs lenses have to be used with stopped down metering.
Non ai F mount lenses said "Auto" on them for a reason, no stop down metering required once you ground down the outer edge of the aperture ring to not hurt the camera indexing tab
(The FM has a movable tab so it works with all)
Great video!
again, great video and incrediiiiible analog camera! possibly the best alongside the FM2
+photographicalexperiments Yes another great one! It's funny that you mention the FM2 because I just uploaded a video about the FM2 that goes live in about 1 hour 👍
very nice! i subscribed to you so i'm sure i won't miss it! :)
+photographicalexperiments Thank you!
Great video.
+Paulo Mateus Guerra Thank you!
I really like the new format, Dan. Nice job.
One clarification: rabbit ears are not an automatic sign that a lens is non-AI. AI and AIS lenses also shipped from the factory with rabbit ears. Additionally, non-AI lenses can be converted (I even did a home conversion on a non-AI 24mm f2.8). So potential lens buyers/users need to look into how to discern between non-AI and AI lenses by looking at the back of the aperture ring.
Also, when using non-AI glass on an F3, be sure to swing the AI coupling lever (on the lens mount) out of the way.
My film Nikon body is an F4, but I'll admit that the F3 is a highly satisfying camera to use!
+Christopher May Thanks Chris! Glad you like the new format. It took forever to put this video together.
I'm bummed I got that point about the lenses incorrect. A couple people already pointed that out. I'll have to post some sort of correction.
Yes I love this camera. I haven't shot with the F4 so I'll have to try that out. One of my buddies swears by the F2 as well. That camera is a tank
Don't worry too much. When I make an error, I usually just add an annotation in the video and a sentence in the description. That's what's great about the photography community on RUclips - there's a lot of knowledge here and I learn something new every time.
I agree with Old Cameras. I think adding an annotation is adequate and it's not going to be a big deal. The rest of the video is good enough and informational enough to make up for it.
Thanks Ade! I appreciate the encouragement. I'm always my harshest critic :)
Thank you Chris!
Dan, great review... I love the F3 and shooting film. I do have a request if your willing to address at a later date. Some information on using today's 3rd party flash systems like a Yongnou or Catcus flash triggers and systems. Once again nice channel and narrative in the videos.
+Silverdreamracer Thank you! Feel free to send any questions my way. I don't usually use a flash but I have a Yongnuo flash that I have successfully used by attaching a PC sync cord to this camera 👍
Hi dan, do you know the cheapest modern flash that has PC sync?
+zaxmaxlax You can get a Yongnuo flash for $60 or $70 USD. I have the YN560 IV.
I have one of the first batch of 90 F3s that came into the UK in 1980 with serial number of 120xxxx which donates it was assembled in March 1980 that was the first month of the production run
+Philip Andreicuk Sweet! That's a good buy 👍
So this camera will not have a functional aperture priority mode if I use an old Nikon lens that has the rabbit ears?
Will a G lens work with F3 full open at least? I understand I cant control the aperture...
I just put this camera away after shooting a roll of Kodak 160 ASA and rated it at 100 ASA! You can see them on my instagram @the35120filmproject and @artisticontrol I love this camera as I have TWO of them! Great work again Dan!
+Lang Kim Photography Twin F3s! That's awesome!
They are a wonderful camera to use and shoot with..love using mine..though just lately the prices seem to be going up for them a lot, especially the nicer examples. have seen some going for up to 1,000$ on ebay and around the 400-500$ is not uncommon. my local camera store I purchased mine from asked me if I wanted to sell it back to them last time I was in there as they have been in great demand over the last few months and as such demand is outstripping their supplies of them they get in.
+catey62 Yeah it's a bummer to see the prices sky rocket like that. You can still land a good deal on eBay if you're patient. I got mine with a 28mm lens for a little over $200
Cool did not know you could make more than a double exposure with the F3 by pulling the lever again before advancing the film. Also, did not know they made an auto-focus version of F3
+David Rothschild Hi David! I'm glad you learned something from the video. This is such a fun camera to shoot with!
hEY Dan,
I just got one of these F3T.. sadly there wasn't a manual.I got a question about the Battery installation about polarity + side down? and if i have to order or find a manual online... I saw that there are a few different ones for these Cameras, Do you know the proper manual part number?
Thank you.
The Minolta XM has the exact same features as the f3 but came out a decade sooner, but f3 is an amazing camera nonetheless
Thank you
Thanks for the complete guide. What other lens do you suggest aside from the 28mm?
I really like the 50mm f/1.8 E series lens
I am glad that somebody reviewed this camera properly. I got mine in 1989. Shooting DSLRs too but this one has special bond with me...almost like the sabre and samurai bond lol.
Those times reviewers tend to complain that cranking lever is not firm enough or similar BS but mine is still good. That caused purchasing motordrive which is jewel of its own breed. In spite of being too heavy, this combo has some other qualities.
I cannot imagine present pro bodies working flawlessly 30 years after.
Yeah, this is a classic camera. My favorite Nikon that I've tried up to this point. I imagine most modern cameras of today will likely be in landfills and thrift shops in 2047.
your the tops kid!
Hi ))) Nice video! Thank you! )))
2022 update: I just paid $550 for a pristine condition F3. The shop also had one brand new in the box for $1400.
I want one so badly!! Looks like your Amazon link only lists $290+ :(
Kept my FM2. Liked the F3 but the electronics limited it and the flash sync was useless outdoors
Nice review. I'm looking forward to buy one. Where can I get a good one for decent price?
+Roberto Gonzalez I got mine on eBay for a little over $200. KEH.com is a good option as well
Dan Bullman Photography thanks!
Roberto Gonzalez eBay
Holy crap. I just bought this camera and I also go to Boston University.
+Greg McKnight Wow, that's awesome! Small world! I actually don't go to BU but I just took some pictures there. You should come to a portrait meet sometime. It's organized by a photographer named John (@canahtam on Instagram). He usually organizes a meeting for photographers and models to meet up, network and shoot photos about once a month (though I dunno if they'll do it in winter time). Anyhow you can follow @portraitmeet on Instagram to see when the next one will be. I've met a lot of cool people through the meets.
Great cameras, I have 2, as well as FM,FM2,FE,FE2,FA,F4,F5,F55,F56,F801, F100, Nikormat,Nikkormat EL,F601,F601m,EM,F60,F50, have I forgotten any?
+mamiyapress Quite a collection! 👍
That is just Nikon analogue!
+mamiyapress oh, you've got some Nikon digital gear as well?
can i use 50mm 1.8d in nikon F3? will the aperture-priority still work using that lens? TIA!
Hi Gerald, thanks for watching. Yes that lens will work on the F3, except for the autofocus.
Somehow I understand why people hated the F3 in the first place and the F2 was more expensive used than the F3 new back in the day. Even the semi-pro FM2 had one stop faster exposure and TWO or THREE stops faster sync speed - and it was all-mechanical.
Great Review. My Nikon f3 reads two stops over as compared with the external light metre.I don't know how to fix it . Do u think all the Nikon f3 is like that? Any suggestions would be very helpful.
@Mert Kabakci one thing I forgot, I used "AF Nikkor 50mm F1.8D" Lens . Do think is that the reason because it's not a AI or AIS Lens?
did you fix this? it sees like something to do with exposure compensation maybe?
@@SurrealExposure12 I'm using light meter app in my phone for shooting
Aw Ha!
I recognized your scruffy table top!
Got ya!
I’ve never known a photojournalist that didn’t use a motor drive to supplant the battery.
are you from Pennsylvania?
Yes, I grew up not too far from Pittsburgh.
Another thing G does not actually mean gelded. Gelding refers to castration so it's usually used as an insult.
I guess in a way they castrated the lenses by taking the aperture ring off hahaha
So this body is AI correct?
not sure about the non-AI and AI lens being distinguishable through the rabbit ears, im seeing Ai lens and non Ai lenses with rabbit ears
Your 28mm is Ai, you don't need to use stop down metering on it. All non-ai, ai, and ais lenses have the "rabbit ears" except for E series lenses
Thank you Inka.
0:54 when you need money animations but you're broke
every F3 reviewer mentions Giugiaro and none can pronounce it correctly ;p
Have you ever owned an F4?
Briefly! One of my subscribers lent me his F4 to shoot and make a video, which will be coming out in the future. I loved having the autofocus option on the F4 but I don't think I would purchase one for my own use. Thanks for watching
I don't know, but I might've bought a bad one on Ebay. The right batteries and I just can't get it to fire except only manually. Bummed out.
Rolls Royce is the best,man
💯🇹🇷⭐️👍Bu f3 cihazdan elimde 1 adet var çok temiz satlıktır ilgilenen olursa youtube kanalımda video su mevcut
The Canon T90 of the same era was by far the superior product.
I LOVE this camera, the only problem i got with the Nikon F3 is that, for me, its one of the ugliest piece of equippment i ever used.
I know some like the looks, but for me it has the uglyness of a lambo countach or the DeLorian.
I fell in love with that camera in 1986 when i was 6 years old, and every time since then when i am about to finally get one i look at it and am like "nah its just too ugly"
I know this is stupid, and i got one a few years back, but i hate it for its looks :)
Not a Ferrari.... Ferrari is Light, this beast is heavy like a pickup, and the Nikon F4 is the Worst, heavy as aTruck
Nikon is a Japanese corporation, namely Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha, so logically it's pronounced like in every traditional language, not the Anglophone way: Neekon. Not Naikon. :o But Niekon or Neekon ... I guess Anglophone people aren't even capable to speak the real i sound.
FYI) I don't know even a single Professional Photographer that would ever use AUTO-FOCUS, except in some very unique circumstances!
If you are no capable enough with a camera to move the focusing ring yourself, THEN I'M NOT GOING TO PAY YOU TO TAKE MY PICTURES!
