    Yes, it is. I still keep my c300 Mark 1 on deck. Any video that isn't 4K, it gets used as a B cam and as an A cam in some situations.

    • @rodrrico
      @rodrrico  4 года назад +4

      That's a great idea, using the C300 as a B cam when 4k is needed for the meat and potatoes. Broadcast TV is still largely shot in 1080p anyway, so I know the C300 mk1 has many years of use left. Thanks for your feedback and for watching!

      @@rodrrico Yeah, the c300 Mark I, 422 8-bit 50mbps, is very relevant. I don't even have plans to sell it. It's standard HDTV to a large degree. I own a c300 Mark III, but I always keeps that mark I in the kit. For one, everyone can't afford the 4K work, and, for two, all projects don't justify that kind of power.

      @@ShankShizank1 C300mk3! Nice, I'm yet to get my hands on one as I can't justify renting one to properly test it out while work is very slim. But as you say, 4k can be overkill... I can't see a real world workflow that would call for Blackmagic's 12k ursa either. Networks would hate the massively bloated file size. But I digress. C300, totally still relevant. A masterclass in camera design for sure.

      Indeed, the first line of Canon's EOS Cine cameras were all thoroughly excellent. They absolutely still hold up today and can take a beating - although I'd never beat a camera I owned. Amazingly the BP-975 and 955 batteries still run for hours on end even though I usually run a D-Tap V-Mount setup.
      I'm excited to share what will be taking the C300's place as my go-to camera moving forward into 2021, but alas there will be a little wait before I announce that!

    i really enjoyed the points you made, i think the c300 mki embodies the spirit of the philosophy of “we need new stories, not new cameras” i think young filmmakers like myself can appreciate cinema and basic principles even more with an “older” camera. as much as id like the next best thing, cameras like the c300 mki really support your own personal growth in making beautiful art

    Thanks for making this video mate. I'm rocking the GH5 and EVA1 but due to the unpopularity of the EVA1 it's always been a tough sell for productions even though I personally think the image out of it is really nice. But it's producers, directors etc who always prefer working with the FS7 or C300 mk2. I believe you it's a beautiful camera the C300 but I'm in the same boat I hope to get the C300 MK3 if budget allows.

    • @rodrrico
      @rodrrico  4 года назад +2

      Yeah exactly, the landscape in Australia shifted to the Sony workflow a couple of years ago and since then I've mostly been hiring FS7M2 as required for broadcast gigs (mostly). I did get one last hurrah before the events of 2020 locked up TV (still mostly locked up by the way) shooting some GVs with the C300 for National Geographic which was nice, but I knew then, even without the events of 2020 that the programs I work on just don't want the C300. I hope it will live on for feature documentaries and for long-form youtube.
      Thank you so much for your feedback, that's why I make these videos. I love talking with other like-minded people so we can all share our experiences together. The C300mk3 is an option, but it depends where I end up professionally after the worst of the lockdown lifts - professionally speaking. There sure are some excellent cameras out there to choose from.

  • @Sutterjack

    Great points - I haven't shot with the C300 M1 personally but I work with someone who did and does and he's very loyal to the camera even though he's now shooting mostly Sony FS7 4k. I've seen a lot of footage from it and it is a remarkable camera with a beautiful image even in 2022! I own a C100 M2 and love it, but the lack of 4k detail and 4.2.0 8 bit codec is really starting to bug me. If the C70 had come with a EVF or even optional EVF I'd be shooting with one now. Canon had rumored a C200 M2 with 4.2.2 10 bit, but it hasn't materialized and I doubt it will. So many choices these days - one really has to do a ton of research and soul-searching on needs vs wants!

    • @rodrrico
      @rodrrico  2 года назад +1

      Totally agree. The world is our oyster these days. We are largely spoiled for choice of camera codecs and functionality options. I boil it down to this:
      1. What kind of 'image' does the client want?
      2. What cameras support a codec that can give me that image.
      Then I go from there. These days I still get a tonne of work with the Sony FX series, but I'm using a C300mk III in my current gig. So it's good to be adaptable.
      Excellent comment, and thank you for watching :)

      It was hard selling my C300 as it had seen so much of the world with me. It was like family in a way. Ultimately I always try and see cameras for what they are which is tools of the trade which should always serve a purpose. Unfortunately my C300 no longer served that purpose for the productions I was working on, but I knew that selling it to a young and up and coming film maker was the right choice. Now it will live on and continue to tell amazing stories, just through someone else's eyes.

    Hi guys! Sorry newbie here. I have just bought myself a Canon C300 mark i and I am loving it! I'm planning to use it for simple live streams and it has come in super handy! The only thing I have noticed about it is that every time I switch the camera off, it does some kind of factory reset meaning all my custom menu settings are gone and it keeps prompting me to set the date and time. Is there a workaround to this? Not a big issue though as I can set it up again, it's just a slight hassle.
    On a side note, the autofocus has been pretty amazing and it works really well with my ATEM Extreme ISO!

    • @rodrrico
      @rodrrico  2 года назад +1

      Hi Vanessa, the problem you have is with the internal battery. It has died and that's why you're settings won't save. Unfortunately the only way to fix this is to get your camera to a Canon approved repairer who can replace the internal battery as opening it yourself voids all repairs (silly I know). This was a known issue with the original C300 and fortunately this was changed with the Mark II to allow the user to easily change the battery themselves.
      Other than replacing the internal battery, you should save all your settings to an SD card so you can quickly restore your settings when it drops out like this in the future. Unfortunately, you'll need to keep setting the time and date though until the internal battery is replaced.
      I hope that helps! Happy shooting, and thank you for your great question :)

      Hi Girish, indeed there are almost limitless additions for the C300, such as different monitors, audio connections, shoulder mounts, EVFs, top handles, side grips and so on. I can provide you with links to products if you can be more specific of what you are after.
      Most of the accessories you won't find on Ebay or Amazon but rather from the companies who make aftermarket additions themselves. Companies like Tilta, Bright Tangerine, Zacuto, SmallHD, SmallRig and many others.
      That's the beauty of cinema grade cameras. By their very design, the are quite modular to allow the operator to configure the camera just how they'd like it.

      @GirishJ 4 года назад +1

      rodrrico thank you! Small rig would be ideal but I have spoken to them and they say they don’t have anything for what I would like to do. I need a plate for the top of the C300 in order to attach a small rig cheese style top handle and which would also allow space for the factory monitor and a top light. I also need space to mount two radio mic body packs - or if there isn’t room on the top of the camera I’d need a baseplate system with bars to attach the mics.

    • @rodrrico
      @rodrrico  4 года назад

      @@GirishJ I had a Zacuto cheese plate and top handle that did the trick for me. As far as a lav, I would velcro that to my V-Mount plate that was connected by some SmallRig carbon rails out the back of my Zacuto VCT Pro baseplate.
      I just had a quick check and indeed that specific setup is no longer made by Zacuto, however the 'C300 Mark II EVF Recoil Pro with Dual Trigger Grips" is very very similar to what I had. The only difference was the V-mount bracket was mounted vertically. Check it out as it could be backwards compatible.

      Personally I usually shoot on Primes for interviews, but occasionally I'd use a zoom lens that is f2.8 or lower. About F3.2 is the sweet spot for most f2.8 lenses, and when framed to MCU it's in the goldilocks zone. If you're looking at canon lenses, then a 24-70mm f2.8 L series is a great option. You can often find those lenses in good condition for sale on facebook groups, ebay etc for half price.

    I know this camera has a 4k sensor that downscales to 1080 p does it do the same for 720 ?

      Hmm, not sure from memory. I must ask, why would you want to record internally at 720p? Wouldn't it be better to compress / shrink the resolution in post production?

    Is it me or are all YT videos of this style starting to look the same? Same small room with LED lighting, one either side of the room / colour grading, lens choice, mic in shot, gear in background to flex. It's like all RUclipsrs go to the same tutorial on how to make a successful YT business.

    This 4k footage doesn't seem to look any more high resolution than the C100 Mark 1 1080 footage.

      That's youtube compression for you. It's notably higher in reality having used the C100 m1 and mk 2.
