Adding VAMPIRE CRABS to my tank || Paludarium Update

  • In this video, I add a group of Vampire Crabs to my paludarium. They are an extremely elusive and mysterious species of invertebrate. There isn't much information about them online, and I hope to shed some light on this underrated species. I hope to breed them in order to reduce the sale of wild caught individuals.

    I really like this video because most other vampire crab set ups you see on RUclips are just an aquarium with some mossy rocks poking out of the water or just a tank of substrate with one water dish. This is probably why your crabs are so successful as you provided a deep enough substrate and a filtered water area.

      There's enough vampire crab owners on earth that enough of them are also YT poster's that theres enough videos of vampire crab setups on YT for you to say "most other" setups like they're as common as cat & dog owners in ur experience or something? Thats a horrifying implication as someone who stumbled onto this video bc of it's colorful thumbnail. Thank you but I'm cool off that.

    I had an absolutely horrific experience with FedEx as well. My girlfriend and I were looking for a leopard gecko to take care of, and we found this beautiful morph we fell in love with. Delivery day came around and we were SO excited to meet our new child. We got a message that he was going to arrive at 9 am. We checked for hours - 9, 10, 11, 12, no package. It finally delivered at FIVE PM. We took in the package, and when I opened it, it felt unusually hot inside. We live in the desert, so it gets very hot out here, I didn't think too much into it. I was confused about a bag of hot liquid sitting in the box when I realized it was supposed to be an ice pack. I took out the gecko container - it was completely steamed up. I opened it and our new baby was upside down, fried. We were devastated. We called the breeder, he reached out to FedEx, and their excuse was "we were delayed because of Covid." We found out he had sat in their truck for HOURS. We were given no real apology, a stupid explanation, and they did absolutely nothing about it!! They were in charge of delivering a LIVE ANIMAL, and they leave it in a hot truck in the desert for hours!?! I start fuming thinking of FedEx, especially with how they handle their animals. Absolutely disgraceful

    Hello, I was trying to breed these guys, specifically Geosesarma tiomanicum, Disco Vampire Crab, and I was able to make babies! Unfortunately, my breeding chamber was not able enough to keep them alive because I just didn't trust my crabs enough to not eat them. I have photos of them and I can share them if you like!
    Also, if you do plan on separating them, I highly suggest to keep them in an enclosure where you can easily monitor them as well as provide lots of live moss, I am pretty sure at this point that these two reasons are why I wasn't able to keep the babies alive.

    • @TheDrPlants
      @TheDrPlants  2 года назад +10

      Hello! I do not plan on separating the baby crabs despite predation. They are hunted by both the crabs and geckos. The crabs are breeding so readily that there are so many babies. Many of them are growing large despite the predators. I don’t feed them either. I believe the reason why they are doing so well are from the following reasons; a large enclosure, tons of microfauna, lots of leaf liter, heavy planting, and endless hiding places.

      Thank you! And I do not think you can keep these crabs with frogs only because the frogs have very sensitive skin. On the other hand, you could probably keep lizards of similar size in that enclosure. Mourning geckos and anoles are always great but always make sure to do your research first. There isn’t much information about building full ecosystems online and I strive to change that!

      The person i bought my crabs from has multiple setups with frogs and vampire crabs together with no issues, he even advertises that they do to great together. i have no personal experience with it myself tho. make sure too observe, and don't put them together in a very small enclosure.

    This is such a cool video. I didn’t have any idea that these crabs even existed but you definitely earned a subscription from me. Can’t wait to see what else you have done.

    Really awesome progession on the tank! Looks awesome and the crabs really fit the aesthetic. Was that a mourning gecko at the end? Funnily enough my current tank build is also for mourning geckos :) they will really like it in your paludarium. Maybe you can become a vampire crab breeder now, if they do it consistently, to push against the practise of catching them in the wild. How long do they normally live?

      Thanks and yes, that was a mourning gecko! Hope your build is going well! I have checked my local laws and I do not need a permit to sell vampire crabs which is exciting. They don’t live for long at all and they generally don’t live longer than 2 years.

      @@TheDrPlants My build had some troubles at first, but I noticed the plants are starting to bounce back and the mold is not as common anymore. It's getting there! May I ask where you're located?
