  • WEAR HEADPHONES, the video’s music does not sound good without them, sorry.
    Anyway, I figured it was about time I did another update on this tank. Everything has been going smoothly, and I haven't had any problems thus far.
    Many people were concerned that crabs would eat the geckos, but I've had zero injuries. The crabs and geckos will sit adjacent to each other and nothing will happen.
    Here are links to a few of things I use in the tank:
    Misting System: amzn.to/3UhElTJ
    Light One: amzn.to/3tBzbak
    Light Two: amzn.to/3ukilMg
    As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Basically, if you buy something through any of these links, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps support the channel!

  • @pixiggukuwu

    The reason for the mini palm closing its leaves at night:
    The leaves of plants that use C3 photosynthesis absorb sunlight and carbon dioxide during the day, performing photosynthesis while the sun is out. But when the sun goes down, they can't do photosynthesis anymore, so they close their stomata to avoid losing excess water during the night.

    • @kostasl1808
      @kostasl1808 Год назад +2

      Plus it is a good mechanism to avoid grazers like insects for some spieces of plants. I don't know if that is the case for this one though.

    • @LukeMcGuireoides
      @LukeMcGuireoides Год назад +2

      Stomata close without the leaves having to move. They're microscopic pores. There is something different going on here. For one thing, I think those might not even be leaves. If I'm correct, they are fronds and that plant is a tree fern.

    • @LukeMcGuireoides
      @LukeMcGuireoides Год назад

As an aside, mourning geckos have always been on the top of my list for when I’m living in a stabile enough place to keep larger vivariums - their little chirps and Jurassic-like appearance are amazing, as is their sociality and their ability to reproduce without mating.

    Fun fact, sunflowers also do something similar at night, since they don't have multi-sectioned leaves like the palm, they don't "close" but they do droop and get almost stiff, when the leaves hug the stalk. Its a way to store and conserve energy while not having as much light as during the day. It's so fun to watch over time-lapse as well as experience it in person. This is a beautiful set-up, and you can tell you have such immense passion for it. We need more people like you on this planet!

      @@TheDrPlants Oh I'll be sure to shoot ya some questions if they come up but so far I gotta say your initial guide was really well done, your explanations for why you did things the way you did & your advice on which products to use & why were all spot on and perfect for cutting out a bunch of questions I might've had.
      Also thanks in advance for saving me from making my own garage smell like chemical death for days on end, I'll definitely be using the calk & foam in well ventilated areas and ideally try to find a couple days where I can leave my garage door open so I can minimize the indoor odor haha!

    Hey I love the setup at keep up the good work but I also wanted to suggest adding poison dart frogs if possible even tho they could eat the vampire crabs and take up to much room.I heard they get along with mourning geckos but not to much it vampire crabs. Itis up to you but I wanted to make a suggestion to you cause I think this tank could be even better.keep up the great work.

    • @TheDrPlants

      I definitely want to do dart frogs in a different setup! I do not think they would thrive with dart frogs. I think there would be to much competition for food and territory.

    Fantastic update Doc, looks better every update, however I do struggle to understand why it is socially acceptable for geckos to lick surfaces for hydration and it isn’t for me, hopefully this conundrum will be answered in a future video.
    I used to have fire belly newts and they went crazy for bloodworms, also great work with the quality of the video it’s awesome to see how your projects evolve over time and how the animals are thriving so much they are multiplying like wildfire, well done

    how did you decide on cohabbing the geckos and crabs? i'm trying to find another species to house with my tree frogs, but a lot of the advice i've read is against cohabbing so the animal doesn't get stressed out

    • @sirentyper4457
      @sirentyper4457 2 года назад +28

      it helps to pick animals that would be cohabbing naturally in thier habitat

    • @benshaw3891
      @benshaw3891 2 года назад +18

      Well morning geckos stay in the upper levels, so they’re often suggested as a Cohab species for various scenarios. I’m not sure about you’re particular circumstance. As I don’t keep tree frogs. Have you considered Isopods? Some species are very ornate. Stuff that naturally keeps in other parts of the tank are less prone to stress I imagine.

    • @Kenneth91619
      @Kenneth91619 2 года назад +11

      When cohabiting pick animals that occupy different levels of the terrarium. Not sure how tall your terrarium is but you can pick a ground or underwater species to put in your tree frog home. You don't want multiple species in the same area competing for space and food. That is where the stress will originate from. Also make sure that your frogs can't eat the other animals and vise versa. Hope this helps

      I currently have a common house gecko and a green tree frog together. They are the same size and take the same humidity and temperature ranges. As long as they can both get a cricket at night, they bask in separate areas of their enclosure.
