Tulalip Bill Signing Ceremony - Honoring Sen. McCoy

With the family of this innovative and visionary man standing by, Governor Inslee signed HB 1879 into law, renaming the Since Time Immemorial Curriculum to honor this Tulalip Nation and Washington State leader. McCoy, whose traditional name in Lushootseed is lulilaš, passed away in June of 2023. In 2005, he sponsored the original STI curriculum, which advocated for Tribal history, culture, and government to be included in State Social Studies Curriculum. With the passage of HB1879, sponsored by Representative Lekanoff, the STI curriculum taught in schools will now be known as the John McCoy (lulilaš) Since Time Immemorial curriculum.
