It I ssd's a disgrace that no one in the last century has listened to Real Gospel music , the like of Mahalia Jackson and James Cleveland.
We Black people are now lost with our faith in the Lord.
It is just a shame!!!!

Her voice is so powerful. It carries us all to divinity. Little do we know that she prompted Martin Luther King Jr. to speak about " I have a Dream". Thank you Mahalia, it was God prompting through you, which made those iconic words a beacon of Equality and Justice.

OMG! This is so delightful. The second song raised me out of my chair and placed me on my feet!

She had to work under crazy musical constraints, in order to sing on tv as a black person. You can tell at 4:43, it was hard for her to lead the choir because the choir didn’t leave enough room in between their “come on children let’s sing” lines. Also at 5:38 you can tell that Mahalia didn’t know which tempo the choir/band was going to end on. And she still persevered anyways, despite all of the limitations placed on her with the intention of dimming her light.

Exactly! During the late fifties and early sixties, record producers and tv execs were always trying to make her and the gospel sound more palatable for white audiences (where the money was). That’s why I prefer her later work where she went back to her roots and audiences got raw Mahalia.
