I have the pre facelift Hyundai i30n 6 speed manual which came with Pirelli P Zero's from factory and below 5 degrees celsius they aren't very good but in warmer temperatures they are good but they don't last long my fronts did 5,500 miles before replacements were needed so I replaced all 4 with Michelin Pilot 4S's which made a big difference to the way the Hyundai gets its power to the road in the lower temperatures. My advice to i30n owners when the Pirelli's wear out put Michelin Pilot 4S's on it you won't be disappointed.

My wife has the ST Mk4 in manual. I'm thinking of maybe getting the i30 Sedan N in DCT. Maybe try to get a drive in one to see how it compares to the hatch.
The i30N Fastback is just as good as the hatch with the added benefit of a bigger boot capacity and better looks (if you like a saloon over a hatch) 👍 ... Will be interesting to hear your thoughts on what you think of the i30N when you get the opportunity to drive one Thanks for watching!
Great video. Enjoyed watching that. I sometimes think questions like 'manual or auto, which one is better?' is a pretty pointless question though. For me, I prefer driving manuals - because it's part of the driving experience - but it doesn't mean that manuals are 'better'
Glad you enjoyed it! We would politely disagree with saying it's a pointless question for many reasons; one being we are both huge fans of hot hatches where we have typically said 'it always has to have a manual' so that question was always dismissed straight away, nowadays it's different due to many factors (SUV domination/woke EV's) so after spending time with the i30N, you can genuinely have as much fun (sometimes better) with a well-rounded auto box like the DCT. I have the focus edition and do love it. But I’m also tempted with the Hyundai i30N in that blue colour with a dct box.. I really don’t know whether to swap or not.
If I didn’t know any better and wasn’t a car guy I’d say these cars are the same thing in terms of looks and exterior design; but I do know better and know that the i30N has a 8 speed wet-DCT and the Focus ST is a 6 speed manual. I respect the save the manual movement but I’m also partial to Hyundai’s 8 speed DCT and know that it is just as good and maybe better than the 6 speed in certain situations.
Indeed, to most they are two 5 door hot hatchbacks so completely agree on that point, well put! But when you look at the price point and compare the features i.e. the gearbox in this case - the Hyundai in both manual and DCT formats trump the Focus ST We both love a manual, especially Aaron but when you're getting a little older the balance does sway towards a good semi automatic depending on it's characteristics/functionality Thanks for watching, commenting and generally supporting us by getting involved 🙏🏼
Ford claim 5.7 for both Manual & Auto ST's Noah, Chris managed to test both versions to see which is faster (head over to PocketRockets if you are interested/intrigued to know) Yes, the i30N (manual) does do 5.9 seconds to 62mph but in this test, the boys were finding out if it's worth sticking with a 6 speed manual in your hot hatch or moving to the dark side where you opt for an Auto So, point still remains to the i30N! Thanks for watching
I've always been a Honda fan but can't get over the rear looks of the fk8. My default choice would normally be a new golf but the front end is just as the rear of the fk8. I think I would just buy a used golf 7.5 tcr and be done with it
It's interesting you're not fond of the rear of the FK8 usually it's the front that's outspoken! That's the problem, the default choice is a Golf GTI/R as it's the safe bet, not faulting the car at all but in most areas, we find it quite dull (unless it's a Clubsport GTI or TCR) but even still remove the exterior of the FK8, no manufacturer currently can come close to the overall experience/feel Thanks for watching mate, remember to subscribe for more content coming soon 👍
Easy choice, the dedicated "N" button that's separate from the drive mode select button will change any man into the 8 year old version of himself, which all the reason you need to pick the i30N.
But Hyundai has overboost for 20 secs.. It gives ~10 more hp. So it's 290 for 20secs, isn' t :) ? I enjoy my i30n fastback everytime i drive. great car
Hi there, thanks for watching - we were going by the figures given to us by the manufacturers, but I believe the overboost gives an increase in torque as opposed to horsepower. Aaron
So you're making the thing that makes the ST Edition model so special a negative just because it's not electronically controlable? The standard ST also comes with adjustable dampers, the thing about the Edition IS that it comes with KW-Coilovers tuned for the track, it's 1cm lower than the standard ST, and you can go even 2.5cm lower from that. Like I get that you're pretending to be fighting about the cars features, but that was just kind of silly and completely missed the point. Also "pretty much the same price but you get so much more with the i30" like what? That car doesn't even have adaptive cruise control or adaptive headlights, both standard on the ST Edition. 🤨
@@CarObsession Just seems kind of odd to repeatedly call it "old fashioned" and not go into any detail on it when it's the special feature of this limited special version. If you want electronic dampers just get the cheaper standard model, these will be sold out soon anyways.
@@cy9nvs Hi there, thanks for responding. I called it old fashioned purely for comedic effect. I reviewed this very car on my own channel a little over this video was made I went in to more detail there. This video is long as it is and it was a pain-staking process as we had to cut A LOT out (the video could have easily been over an hour) so there's a very strong chance more chat on the coilovers did not make the final effort.
Think you have missed our point on customisation you get with the i30N in comparison to the Focus ST (ST Edition & in general), the consumer will more likely use their car on public roads compared to tracks - let alone getting the spanners out to adjust ride settings As Aaron has stated, the humour/comedy of the 'old fashioned' suspension isn't a dig at the Focus, it's more providing a fun alternative to comparing against the i30N's platform If the Focus ST Edition shared more significant differences over a standard ST at the price point, I think it would have had a stronger fight with the i30N Quite funny (no pun intended) you bring up ride as we did a side video demonstrating a "scientific" experiment on the i30N firm 'N' suspension mode Thanks for watching!
@@ThoseTwoCarGuys the standard ST has electronic dampers, if you don't want the adjustable KW coilovers, just get the cheaper standard ST. 🤨 A lot of people with fancy electronic suspensions end up throwing it out to lower the car anyways.
Love both cars but Hyundai the automatic in the 130n does have a few problems. Which puts me off buying it as a 2nd hand car. So would probably go for a low mileage golf R 2020. Or even the GR Yaris now the kids have grown up. Honda Civic too much money but worth it.
Regarding auto boxes, you could get problems with any gearbox (more so autos as they cost more to fix when problems arise) Second i30N DCT's will be newer on the market than the Golfs as the Hyundai only introduced them in the last few years VW DSG boxes do fail (see forums) - of course VAG group have been updating them so less chance of failure but still has been documented If you're not bothered on practicality - get a GR YARIS!!!!! DO IT!!!! Thanks for watching!
I’ve had both and I can tell you now, the Focus is boring, I changed it for the Hyundai and I’ve not looked back. You don’t notice the power difference at all, especially on UK roads. If the Focus had customisable features and a much more ‘driver’ orientated set up, it may be more of a threat. In my opinion though, the Hyundai trumps it in every way. Which is a shame as I’m an absolute Ford fanboy and have been since the early 90’s.

Guys both cars good but how you compare Manuel vs automatic wet 8 speed serious is same category you want hear your this compare Hyundai is far far with automatic far best stability flat best car best engine agility stability i30n is best sport car is fact if you like this compare of this video.
To repeat the answer to this question again, we wasn't comparing the DCT against the manual, we were using both a Auto & manual car together to whether you should remain with a manual in your hot hatch or go for an Auto alternative We are comparing the two cars, not their transmission differences Suggest you finish the video in it's entirety to get the bigger picture along with the car we chose
So you say you get more in Hyundai for your money. Hmm... Interesting, especially when you look at the cabin quality ( bad, max level of a fiesta ), non leader handbrake (in manual) and rubbish seats especially compared to fords RECARO. Just to clarify : I owned both in manual. Now I have ST Edition. Test absolutely without any sense with one being auto and the other one manual. And even less sense mentioning fk8 every 10 seconds when your testing those two. Your going the direction of Matt from carwow. His motto should be: if VW doesn't win there is no winner. Both nice cars. Recommend both to anyone who wants one. I'm looking in a car like that fun , connection, playfulness and ST offers more of it
Finding hard to understand this statement but happy to respond and hopefully answer what has been said by yourself 1. Manual v. Auto debate is a relatable topic to discuss as arguably a hot hatch should be a "Manual" but with the evolution of technology and the experience from the i30N we both had proves Autos can suit a hot hatch application these days. 2. The interiors in both the Focus and i30N are just as bad as each other. Hyundai cater two different seat types giving the potential owner a choice amongst other items like drive modes and other customisation that the Focus lacks 3. Hardly spoke about the FK8 especially not every 10 seconds, fun fact, Chris had to cut out 30-40 mins of footage where more of the FK8 was mentioned resulting to hardly any chat on the Civic at all! Drive an FK8, it blows the competition out of the water, even cars in other segments too. 4. Correction - We are not CarWow, not influenced/trying to be like CarWow or film content like CarWow, last time we checked they provide car reviews (like most automotive content creators) and certainly don't make Twin Tests (which we have both being filming them for over a year now - check out our 'Twin Test' playlist 👍🏼 5. As you've made it abundantly clear you own a Focus ST, both myself and Aaron are unbiased independent reviewers that don't own either car (although we'd love to own both) so please refrain from shooting us down for a choice we've made (clearly shows it was a hard decision to pick) just because you don't agree. Thanks for commenting and watching Mike, all the best.
@@ThoseTwoCarGuys Statement is very easy to understand. 1. Testing a manual vs auto makes sense only when you test Focus manual vs focus auto or I30 manual vs I30 auto otherwise it makes no sense. My opinion hot hatch should be manual, but I don't care what others buy 2. Cabins are miles apart. Literally miles apart in every aspect. Hyundai cabin is max i20 or fiesta level. Owned both for more then few days that you have them for test. I know Hyundai has two sets of seats. I had the bucket ones and still they are worse then those RECARO. But they buckets cost money, you didn't have them, they don't come as standard so thats another minus on Hyundai. So it's not worth more for the money if you need to pay for basic components of a hot hatch. All the way Hyundai made the customisation better in terms of engine modes and individual setup. But that's about it. 3. Can't be asked to count how many times you mentioned honda but loads. It's not part of that test. Make it a part of that test or say it's your benchmark. In person I've never been in one so can't say much about it. 4. Your not influenced by them. If you would I wouldn't watch a second of it. Just misunderstood what I meant. 5. I've made it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT I've OWNED BOTH OF THEM and based on that experience ( 7months with i30N and 6 months with ST ) I've said without any bias that both cars I would recommend to anyone who wants one. Mentioned that I'm looking in a care fun, playfulness and connection with a car. And more of that character I see in Focus. Very mobile rear axle and so on. There's no bias from me towards Ford. I just chose what makes more fun. And as last. NEVER said that your not independent or biased. Based on amount of times you mentioned honda it looks/sounds like Matt about VW. Anything is ok but VW always win. For him a Polo GTI would be better then a type-r. Sounds funny. Guy is a clown, don't go that way. And as last I do have a bias but not for Ford or Hyundai. My benchmark in this class was and always will be Megane RS ( fastest on Nürburgring). Drove one and it's outstanding. Sadly it's price tag
We'll take that as a compliment seeing as we didn't script the video apart from the recorded facts provided by both manufacturers 😀 To be productive/constructive, we look forward to you sharing your video on how to film, not script, edit and post out a video so we can take note 👍🏼

4. Correction - We are not CarWow, not influenced/trying to be like CarWow or film content like CarWow, last time we checked they provide car reviews (like most automotive content creators) and certainly don't make Twin Tests (which we have both being filming them for over a year now - check out our 'Twin Test' playlist 👍🏼
My opinion hot hatch should be manual, but I don't care what others buy
Sadly it's price tag

that was alot of cringe scripted banter
We'll take that as a compliment seeing as we didn't script the video apart from the recorded facts provided by both manufacturers 😀
To be productive/constructive, we look forward to you sharing your video on how to film, not script, edit and post out a video so we can take note 👍🏼
