- In case you haven't seen this great and quirky Japanese female group. Smart, talented and funny. This song's title puns on 'buru' the Japanese pronunciation of 'blue.' ①"Otona Blue": adult blues, and ② "otonaburu (大人ぶる)" "to act like an adult". While they work with various composers on their musical arrangement, they do their own choreography and write some of their own lyrics, including those for this song.

I love that when you watch their performances from when they were really young (5-6 years ago), still in school and not signed by 88 rising yet, they are the same! They were just as talented and just as goofy as they are now, which shows the way they act, their branding, their signature weirdness is something that is natural to them, it hasn't been manufactured by some middle aged men who decided to create a "weird" idol group.
Their label clearly plays on their weirdness now and they have to exaggerate it for the band, but the idea for a group like this came from the girls themselves and not the label.
I also recently discovered this group and have been captivated by them as well. I'm glad I got the same vibe from them as you did. They certainly have a good variety of music styles, especially when the collaborate with other artists. Their dance skill and singing talent combined is amazing, and I believe Suzuka has what I can only describe as an extreme excess of charm. 😁 She certainly seems to be very different from the stereotypical image of a japanese personality. I'm glad she can express herself as an artist.

Unsurprisingly, the First Take version of Otona Blue was my entry to the band and until now the only version of the song I knew. But I have to say I also enjoyed this choreo immensly. And the One Million clip was just adorable.

Cool ! I found about this band about a month ago and been enjoying their videos and videos about them since then. I actually bought a couple of their singles from iTunes - and it's been a long time since i've bought any music. Love their energy - and Suzuka really stands out in this video. They all seem to be 'natural born' entertainers - I'll keep following them to see what the future holds - !
Both albums are worth having, I think. And they seem poised to generate a lot more. Exciting.

Ahh, what a wonderful surprise! I just found these girls last month and I can't get enough! On top of their singing and dancing, I love the crazy goofy playfulness! Suzuka cracks me up! Mizyu (Mizyucopter) and her twin tails of death fascinate me to no end. Kanon likes to ham it up and is basically the Straight man to Suzuka's joking around. Rin is an awesome dancer and makes some great music. I hope they can bust out enough to get their music available internationally. Nai Nai Nai Nai is the only song I have found for sale in the international market. I am currently waiting on delivery of their last album via import. I am happy to see you cover them. You remind me of myself watching their videos and laughing out loud at some the things they do. I have literally watched hours of their stuff without subtitles even though I don't speak Japanese. I hope to see more of their stuff on here! Thanks!

So, I was skeptical after watching this video. Loved the lyrics and the dancing, was not particularly into the actual music. But, you made me intrigued enough to start down a small rabbit hole of their videos and performances, and now am most definitely a fan... These girls are amazing! Amazing dancing, amazing singing, amazing lyrics when I could find the English translation. I really hope they get really big, they deserve it.

A Facebook friend pointed me to one of their skits about going to school in Japan.
I initially thought they were just a talented group of comedians, with great physical comedy skills.
I was happy to find out that they all have very nice voices, fun dance routines, and great songs as well.
Lots of cool Funk, Acid Jazz, '70s/'80s Japanese Pop, etc. influences.
And they create their own choreography, and write a lot of the lyrics.
They've been really starting to blow up since they got picked up by 88rising.
I love Sakura Gakuin, because they are family friendly and wholesome.
And I love Atarashii Gakkou for almost the opposite reasons. : )
But like you pointed out, it works because they don't take the whole thing too seriously.
They balance on that knife edge like pros.

great analysis/reaction. Glad you took the time to be the first to go in depth. I initially was really interested in their stage performance, then I caught on to the lead's vocals. Very old school jazz. Really like their performances, love the fusion of music styles. They even incorporated a little punk into another song. Great contrast to Babymetal. Guess the formula to a great Japanese group includes finding a Suzuka who can belt out vocals. They're all really good vocals.

great analysis. I avoid most things japanese, but there was something about this group that drew me in. theres alot about the things you said about them being meta that I didnt consciously know, but I understood on a subconscious level. this video has enriched my appreciation of them.

I enjoyed your reaction and commentary on Atarashii Gakko. These young ladies are poised to explode on the world scene; and I am happy to see anything that increases their exposure in the West. Their blend of J-pop, jazz, punk. and hip hop is very refreshing, and in its own way just as unique as BabyMetal or Wagakki Band. The girls' goofiness (some would say weirdness) makes then a joy to watch. I have seen both versions of NAINAINAI that you mentioned, but my favorite is a third one in which Atarashii Gakko perform it in an empty railway car.

Hi, AJ! Really enjoy your comments on AG's songs. I'm from Japan, living in LA for a long time now. And I've just found out about this incredibly talented vocal/dance group and been watching so many of their videos as well as reviews on this particular song. One of them, from Japan, said that the title, Otona Blue, is a play on words, which sounds very close to "Otona buru", which means "to pretend like an adult" So, "Oikakete, mata Otona buru" means "Chasing it over and over and yet, I still pretend to be an adult" Ah, so dattan desuka!
Thanks. Yeah, that was one of those things I realized right after I uploaded the video. I added it to the description but it was too late to rerecord. At the time (this was over 3 years ago, remember) there was next to no English language discussing of AG so I was trying to build a sense of the song from scratch. Thanks for the analysis. Now I understand the variance of Suzuka’s dance in this track, not simply explained by her being lead vocalist. I hope that if isn’t too much of a cliché to say that they subvert the Idol medium more than any other group. And of course they collaborate with groups outside the J-Pop norm, like H Zattaro. As they are now aged 18-22 and wear the same younger girls uniforms as they did on formation 3 or 4 years back, is in itself making a point. They also write much of their own material and have really inventive choreography; added to this they are aligned to 88Rising who can get them into the USA

Suzuki has the voice of an angel and the charm of the devil, I absolutely have fallen for their charm.
"Don't Treat Me Like A Child"( by Helen Shapiro) , "Osozaki Girl (Jun Togawa)" Song theme is traditional...Music style has hiphop/soul/funk mixture...quite new and nostalgic. Thats one current trend. (Suchmos etc.)

I like these looks at other groups. Entertaining as always! While this didn't grab me immediately, your discussion intrigued me enough that I might have to check out a little more. That said, you did get me with Polkadot Stingray. So keep 'em coming. Please :).
Part of what makes these guys cool is that they use a wide range of musical styles, some lighter, some heavier, some jazzy, some punky, even some hard rock. Poke around a bit. The first album has a lot of variety.
So, after watching many different performances of this over the last year and a half, there's one thing I haven't figured out that is strangely intriguing to me. Toward the end, Suzuka comes to the front, with the others lined up in a row behind and Mizyu the closest. Mizyu places her hand on Suzuka's left shoulder as all of them start to walk backwards, as if guiding Suzuka. What does it mean?? What deep meaning does this have? Will the answer solve the mysteries of the universe? AJ, you're a Shakespearean, you must know the answer, right?
Ha :) Well, if I'm understanding the moment you mean I guess you could say that (1. conceptually) they are restraining her exuberance, not letting her get ahead of herself and the character's desire to grow up fast and (2. practically) they are relocating her for the tight formation dance which follows because she's been ad libbing alone and has her back to them so she won't be able to see where they are. Moments like that are really useful for performers when they have to reset their position but don't want to be looking down or round. Just a guess.
LOL, as @Dennis Hansen said, it's not my cup of tea with regards to the music (although I must say it is catchy), but the video is hilarious. Then again, it doesn't really matter, I just love any videos you react to.
I love the contrast between the lead singer and the other girls. They play the straight part most of the time, and Suzuka (Is being named Suzuka a pre-requisite for being a lead singer in Japan 🤔) is acting all goofy.
I also like all the written comments you add in your video when confirming information you had just said in your reaction, or simply being sarcastic. It gives it a BM feel, just as if Yui and Moa were reacting to something you just said 😁.

I wake up in the morning, open youtube and discovered them accidentally. They made my day so much. The first time I watched their dance, I smile a lil bit and started to get addicted to how they dance and their face reaction. I can see how much they enjoy the dance and song and they really understand what they're singing about. I keep watching their videos over and over again. I hope to see more idol promoting their personality rather than beauty. And I already in love with them especially Suzuka. She is so pretty and charming!

I think AG are amazing. They have the immediate “gloss” of J-Pop to attract casual audiences, but underlying that “gloss,” is a smart, creative group of performers. There are some performances/videos where the choreography is almost like Performance Art. In some ways, they harken back to the wild originality of DEVO. I hope they have much success! 👍

I'm certainly an outsider to the cultures involved here (idol; Japanese), which has made me all the more curious as to what it is about Atarashii Gakko I find so interesting. This video articulated what that is. In the case of this song in particular, it's the way the band use lyrics and choreography (and perhaps music too? I'm not a music theorist but I wonder...) to expertly juxtapose one of those great tensions we all experienced between childhood and adulthood growing up. Thank for the insight!

I discovered this group about a month ago and have watched a number of their videos and it seems like there is a lot of tongue in cheek to their music and dance, I didn't really understand the lyrics but the meaning seemed to come through. Welcome! Yeah, their whole new EP was produced by Money Mark (the Beastie Boys' producer) so they are really running with that influence. I hope they don't move completely away from the jazzier stuff from the first two albums, bit I love to see them exercising their creative range and taking more and more control of their material.

"atarashii gakko no leaders" can have two readings: leaders of the new school, or, new leaders of the school. it's ambiguous even for the Japanese, and I'd like know which they meant.
Maybe both, though I think as they have evolved the former makes the most sense. They are trying to model a new movement. That's how I view them anyway.

I think there is an Angel vs Devil sentiment occurring (the old cliché, Devil in one ear, Angel in the other) with Suzuka's character in the song being the devil and the chorus (other three girls) being the Angel. Suzuka's character is acknowledging the sexual attention she is receiving, is flattered by it, want's it, but she's deceiving herself. The Angel (chorus) kicks in and reminds her she might like that attention but she's still too young and that that type of attention is not wanted... the part of a women's body that matters is the heart. This is reflected in the dance. When Suzuka is singing, the other girls are dancing in a more suggestive manner. When the chorus starts, Suzuka's character becomes who she really is, a dorky young girl, and the other girls become literally "closed up". In the second verse, as Suzuka's character is falling to the temptation, the "Angels" are motionless, unable to stop her ( ruclips.net/video/-yR1IBtixHY/видео.html :original video ). It is Suzuka's character itself that snaps the Angels back to action, at which point she is once again reminded of what is important (the heart) and who she is (an innocent young girl). Other segments of the dance that reflect this sentiment are when the "Angels" do the same "I know you want this" movement with their hands (ruclips.net/video/-yR1IBtixHY/видео.html : original video), it's followed by them shaking their head "no". There is also a point in the song when Suzuka's character is at the front of the stage asking someone to "come find me" and the "Angels" come up and physically pull her back (ruclips.net/video/-yR1IBtixHY/видео.html : original video), as if pulling her away from those desires. Another point of note with the dance is that Suzuka's character is only "happy" when she's that dorky teen girl realizing what is important is the heart. That's a lot of meaning coming from four young women in an Idol group. The dance is more than just dance, the movements tell the story.
Yeah, I agree about the division, though personally I would put it in psychological/social/developmental terms rather than moral (angel/devil), though I guess you mean that playfully (in which case, yes, absolutely!). But yes to the binary, though I think the point of the song, like a lot of stuff with AG, is the validity of both positions, rather than championing one over the other, or at least, that's how I see it.
@@AndrewHartley I'm not sure if we can escape the moral aspect anytime you breach this subject matter... sex and approaching maturity, but perhaps the Angel/Devil analogy took it to far. They certainly are not championing one over the other. The validity of both positions certainly exists.... but the song does start with the "sexy" side and ends with the "dorky" fun side, immediately following what I interpret in the choreo as being pulled back from succumbing to desire, with the chorus subsequently expressing the sentiment of "Adult Blues", before "giving up?"... "giving in?"... "falling back on" the fun young girl side of the equation. So at least for the moment, while the yearning remains (as evidenced by the final verse), it appears innocence won (symbolic in the dance when viewed within the song context), although she does strike a "dorky girl trying to be sexy pose" as the final movement of the song. That single move sums up the entirety of the song, expressing the conflicting emotions that are it's foundation. Regardless, I find it fascinating how the dance is used to interpret song meaning, in significant detail no less. Which, at least as it relates to popular music and the mainstream, is unique to the Japanese Idol and Alt-Idol scene.

I don't really think it's about either exactly. It's about wanting to be an adult. Sex and relationships are part of that, but from the singer's POV they are barely understood things that have a glamour about them. At least that's how it feels to me.

It's like she knows the effect of her beauty to other people and what kind of things they might think... But at the same time she is not ready... I don't know... I love this song and dance, but it somehow makes me uncomfortable that they where that young at the time and that they did not write the lyrics themselves...
@@aeronbern1769 I know what you mean, and I think the choreo (which they designed) IS expressly sexual, but it's also undercut with all the goofiness. And they weren't that young when they was recorded. All over 18, and Mizyu was 21.
