Also I'm glad you mentioned professionalism. Some people dismiss their clowning about, but you cannot do that without first being at the top of your game and it's what makes them what they are - joyous.
I have been following the channel “The First Take” for a long time and in my opinion the performance of these fantastic Girls is among the best ever, funny, nice and positive. They do a particular kind of music and you may not like it but their concerts are amazing!
Also, also, love AG and have done since I heard their first album and I'm so glad you're doing reactions. They have such a wide range of musical styles and their dance work is to die for. There's a huge amount of video out there - official music videos, official live videos, choreography videos, dance practice videos, commercials they have done, and single take versions of some of their performances. All of it enthralling.
The song was great, but their messing about was what really made it entertaining for me. Hard to listen when I'm chuckling every few seconds. Loved it.
You finally seen the Mizyucopter ^^. These girls are wild on so many level that it's always fun to watch them. Like said before, they have dropped a collab with Maximum the Hormones, and a freaking good one, even if it's an old one of MtH, Atarashii Gakko found their place in this song to do their thing, and just having the four of them with Nao (drums and singer of MtH and idol of Akane from BM), it's just a sight to see and sugar for your ears.
So glad you love their TFT OTONABLUE. If I remember right, they're the first one to perform with a relax and happy mood here. The performers are usually very formal and serious. AG! One of a kind!🌟🌟🌟🌟 SUZUKA! 🤘🔥 Salute to these four unique, authentic, talented and very entertaining ladies from Japan. Rare gems indeed.
Lowkey love people seeing this video. I stumbled on their First Take as I was just autoplaying a TFT videos. I stumbled on them and I was like oh who is this? And I was instantly taken in by their energy. This led me down a rabbit whole of their content where I just became hooked. Then when I looked I saw they were coming to Boston, and I was like oh I can't do that I don't know them. After so much back and forth with myself I did, and it was one of my favorite concert going experiences in a long time! So I love seeing people have that same reaction to them! If you haven't, get those tickets! It is well worth it!
FYI the hair twirl is called the "Mizyucopter". Otona Blue (Adult Blues) contains a double meaning as Suzuka says "Otonaburu" on purpose which means to "act like an adult". It's about "teenage awakening" ie. the awareness of desire in others and their own desire to grow up and experience adult emotions, or at least their fantasy of them. AG wrote the lyrics when they were younger (they are all in their 20s now) and I think it's an honest expression of their feelings as they approached adulthood, which can make people uncomfortable, but it seems like an important subject for 4 young women who started performing in front of people when they were teenagers. The lyrics about trying to act older are combined with a deliberately coquettish dance. As you noticed the music has a retro vibe as it's heavily influenced by an 80s Showa era song by Akiko Wada called "Furui Nikki".
I know Akiko Wada as a TARENTO that I have seen on Japanese TV countless times since the late 80s, although I didn't know the reason for her celebrity. Thank you so much for turning me on to Furui Nikki. Hearing this song answers so many questions.
When "Otonablue" came out Japanese fans immediately noticed the musical similarities to Wada's "Furui Nikki" (though the lyrics are quite different while broadly thematically related). Suzuka had a photo of Wada before her when she recorded "Otonablue". I watched Wada sing "Otonablue" with Suzuka on Japanese t v last year and when Wada sang out of tune (as she did for much of the song), Suzuka deliberately matched her tuning---which was quite a vocal feat in itself.
you should see them live! they’re in north america right now. saw them for the first time last year and i was so impressed i’m seeing them again soon 😆💛
First, I love Atarashii Gakko, always fun and entertaining, Second, you have to react to the collaboration of Maximum The Hormone and Atarashii Gakko-Shimi-incredible does not even begin to describe it , it’s truly a must see.
My first foray into AG was via Tokyo Calling which immediately got me due to the kaiju references and the nod to London Calling by The Clash. Plus, the lyrics really speak of pressing social issues especially in densely populated cities. Then, I heard Toryanse which got me hyped up even more with its intense beat but with traditional Japanese elements. But it was Otonablue First Take which really sealed the AG deal for me. I think this performance is an excellent portal for non-fans, especially foreigners, to be introduced to Atarashii Gakko as a group. 😊
Yeah I’m not sure if it was before, or around the time this came out, where I decided I had to absolutely catch their first world tour. Saw them in June in Berlin and it was a full set of this energy. It was a blast!!
amazing reaction! i've watched all your reactions to them and loved every single one :)) if you're still not sure about going to their concert, i'd recommend checking out some clips from their live performances (if you don't mind the spoilers). their song Arigato or Omakase can be really good options, particularly the clips from Coachella otherwise, i think you'd really like some of their older stuff, which has a more rockish jazzy vibe, like their song koinosyadanki
This song was produced with an artist named Yonkey who is in the band Klang Ruler. They also perform a few songs with them covering pop hits called midnight sessions.
Such wholesome girls. They have had fun since mid-teens, and seems like they're still going strong. For them it seems just as important having fun. It's a bit og hit and miss on my behalf. What also seems cool is how they stay in this character. Got some crush on Kanon and Miyzu. So much cuteness. Also seems like Suzuka by choice did tone down her looks to not overshadow the others. To give her that shy girl look, though she probably is the most outro of all. Surprisingly beautiful without glasses.
AG is a very talented band and if you have a chance to see them live, jump on it. Also, I read somewhere (maybe an interview) that this song is for from the perspective of a young girl, maybe 16-17, about her thoughts on love. Thanks for the reaction and we'll all be waiting for your tail spin performance.
Sugoi! DO NOT MISS THEM LIVE!! I saw them last year, and it was the most energetic, entertaining, and FUN show I've been to in decades. Will see them again on October 11th in D.C.. Again, DNMTL!!! Arigatou! #newschoolleaders
I'd rather watch stuff like this with you and your commentary than any other way! I like it when some effort is put forward to create an act. Spectacle, choreography, comedy, inventive expression and costuming and efficient expression of their individuality ~ big check marks. Reminds me of the first vanilla Coke I ever drank. Surprising, sweet and addictive. Thanks NP!
The title is a clever bit of word play. "Otonablue", when pronounced with a Japanese accent, sounds like "otonaburu". "Otonaburu" is a Japanese word used to describe a child who tries to act like an adult, and, tries to make people think they are older than they are.
They worked ten years to reach that level of excellence! About Suzuka, talent is very present in her family: her older sister Sakika was the leader of the band "Girlfriend" (separated now) - it would be funny to react to one of their songs (I propose "Lemon"). Sakika looks a lot like a polished version of Suzuka -but the music couldn't be more different! Oh - and of course, Atarashii Gakko just collaborated with Maximum The hormone for a cover of their song SHIMI - when two crazy groups met, guess what ... 🤪
Just a few days away from seeing their live show in Chicago! Suzuka has a sister, Sakika, who was in her own band.... "Girlfriend", where she sang and played guitar. They broke up, but they do have some MV's. It's a shame they were pretty good. Here's a fun one of them doing a cover from the group "Perfume". I know you'll dig it 😄 ruclips.net/video/VEBiszeabkg/видео.htmlsi=CGlXdo3MyxGz_9cS
Great review! Also, you might want to check out their performance at Coachella this year - they sang Tokyo Calling with the USC Marching band, very impressive.
ATARASHII GAKKO NO LEADERS are dance vocal troupe (i.e., they are dancers who sing). Take another look at SUZUKA’s move when she sings, “WAKATERU, HOSHIN’DESHOU” (I know what you want). 😂 Here is the best version of video for オトナブルー (OTONA Blue): ruclips.net/video/XCLajejueU0/видео.html SUZUKA reaches for those low notes to sound like an old-fashioned male comedian. I like Atarashii Gakko. I think they have some of the best dancing, great voices, and not only do you get to hear each girl sing alone, you get to hear their harmonies without the lead. And they're really good harmonies. I do not like the music however, the 90s electronic with no musicians, not my thing. But this is one of the great First take performances, as you get a real feel for the group and not just an image.
I get to see them in 3 days in Chicago! (It's OK to be jealous. 😋) It will be my second time seeing them live. Probably the only group I will travel long distance to see besides Band-Maid. Mizyu has been practicing her "Mizyu-copter" for quite a while, you'll get there! 😁 And Suzuka is a force of nature that just pulls you along for the ride! She is the "problem child" as they say in many of their concerts, and we all love it!
i love how you can go from babymetal to band maid and say Saike has a deeper voice... then you hear Suzuka's voice. wow. deep. they have a song called Suki Lie that is awesome
Money Mark has produced some of their music. It makes perfect sense that Keyboard Money Mark would work with the group. He extensively recorded and toured the world with Beastie Boys for almost two decades.
@@tcntad87 Lol ... I can guess what you'll be doing the rest of the day ;) . Find "Yoshu Fukushu" and "Let's talk about the future of katakotori noodles". The girl in the beginning of both videos is NAO ... probably the most influential female drummer in Japan.
Mizyu-copter! 🚁 As much as I love them all, Mizyu is (for the moment) my favorite member. You have to check out the collaboration between *Maximum the Hormone* and *Atarashii Gakko.* It is amazing! This collab might seem counterintuitive at first, but then you remember AG! is the most metal "girl group" ever. While they might not sound metal, their attitude is metal AF! "With personality and freedom, we stand out"!
I love that when you ask what genre is Atarashii Gakko, the answer is just yes. This song is a throwback homage to 80s Tokyo city pop. That scene was filled to the brim with young female singers with these impossible voices. They describe Suzuka as having a Showa era style voice, which has these deep beautiful tones. If you're interested in getting into some city pop I can provide some good recommendations, I have quite a collection
AG's music is not something I would listen to without the choreography that accompanies it. Their choreo is unconventional to say the least, and very fun to watch. From what I can tell about The First Take, the artists on it do not dance or anything other than play and or sing their song. AG decided that wasn't what they would do and danced it out with a somewhat stripped down version of their choreo. I have watched several of their live concert videos and they seem to have a great time doing what they do. Judging by the many videos of them being silly out in public, I think you could follow them into a Walmart store and have more fun than going to Disney World. @NittPicc Did you ever get the NittPicc-copter spun up? (LOL)
Have a watch of any of the fancam videos shot near the stage, Suzuka must be an absolute terror for her security and the venue security staff, as she climbs the audience fence and surfs into the crowd like Iggy Pop or that classic 80's Peter Gabriel crucifix crowd surfing. She's not only super gregarious but quite fearless as well. The thing that I love about AG! is at the core the same thing I love about Band-Maid, this was their original concept and execution, not a record label or management company creation. And they have some serious social commentary content in the lyrics as well.
In Vancouver on Friday she went around the entire venue, ended up dancing on a bar in the very back of it, and then made her way back. This was during all of Tokyo Calling and for the majority of NaiNaiNai.
Atarashii Gakko are absolutely cute! They have such a fun and playful sense in this video. And, while not a female, the lyrics sound similar to the comments in some date movie chick flick (no offense intended). Thanks NittPicc loved this as well.
It is amazing that Atarsahii Gakko! is heading into their 10 year anniversary. They started out between the ages of 13-15 and since then have done ALL their own choreo (and created choreo for other groups as well) and write a vast, vast majority of their own lyrics. Also, the "Mizyucopter" record is 101 in ten seconds by her, so you have your work cut out for you! There is too much lore and accolades to put in a YT comment.
The name of the song is a pun off of the japanese word otonaburu, which roughly means children trying to act mature. This is combined with the music itself, which borrows heavily from 80's jpop, as though even the song itself is trying to act more 'mature' than it is.
Why did this become popular in the west? The subtitles are so sanitized as to remove all meaning and humor from the song. It actually tackles a very important problem in Tokyo society.
Also I'm glad you mentioned professionalism. Some people dismiss their clowning about, but you cannot do that without first being at the top of your game and it's what makes them what they are - joyous.
