I didn't realize it until I started looking into Rockabilly style playing, but these rhythms are really 12 bar blues progressions that have been sped up, and instead of hitting each note once you hit it twice. I have also learned that folks like Johnny Cash/Luther Perkins and Chuck Berry are considered early Rockabilly pioneers. Honestly, I've always thought of Cash as a country singer and Berry as a Rock and Roll guy, but that's the whole point of Rockabilly right-----that time in the 50s and early 60s when the two were blended. Dwight Yokum has a hit called Fast As You that has the same rhythm as you show here. It's amazing to me to be finding all this out now when it's been right there plain as day all along. LOL.
I love how Damien just sticks to the basics for those who are just learning guitar as well as more intricate stuff more more advanced. I wish i had this basic stuff when i was just starting out. Great job.
Hello my friend! I am a Death Metal Freak for over 25 years. In my youth i heard from time to time the Stray Cats record "rant and rave with the...". A coupel of days ago i bougth a Gretsch Guitar and start playing Rockabilly music. I love this "swinging feel" and the sound of this guitar! Your videos are very helpfull for me to learn about this great style of music! I bougth also your Rockabilly DVD (Download). Thanks for doing this vids and greetings from the Black Forest in the south of Germany! (Btw, it is funny to see that the band SLAYER plays on the same scales as many blues and Rockabilly guitarists . We are brothers but in diferent sounds 😁)
In the 80s I was listening to German bands like Kreator, Destruction & Sodom a lot. In fact they're still great. Congrats on your new guitar and thank you for the support. I really appreciate it. :)
Your videos always make me happy. I'm glad you're out there in sunny Tampa Bay Florida doing what you do. Makes me feel like everything will be alright. 🌴🌞
it is really fun watching your videos. as a beginer i practice a lot and every time i come back to the video i am amazed by the precision in your playing. just great (and perfect to keep me humble) thanks from germany
I really appreciate your videos and attitude! This took me back to being a teen learning guitar. My dad taught me these patterns early on. Thanks for the memories.
I stopped by your page and seen you with a Harmony Rocket. I have an early 60s Harmony Rocket with the Two Dearmond gold foil pick-ups my Dad gave me when I was just a kid. They are awesome guitars and I still play mine in my band and record with it as well. It was good to see you have an appreciation for them. and "Guitar Boogie" was one of the first boogie licks I learned back in my childhood. Thanks Damian, another cool bit of "Coolness"
I begged my dad to buy me a Colecovision. He finally did, and they went out of business 2 weeks later. I went out and bought as many games as possible. I mastered Jumpman Junior and Miner 2049'er. Hilarious. Great lesson BTW. Thanks for all you are doing Damian!
Thanks for watching the lesson Brian. I had got a Atari as a present in 2nd or 3rd grade. I always wanted a ColecoVision as a kid. Didn't get one until I was an adult lol. On my street growing up the other kids had ColecoVision, Intellivision & the Odyssey 2. Which was a fun console to play. :)
thanks for all your work...I really needed this one. I knew a simple version for ex 1 but 5 chord run on different strings...2 and three are both comfortable challenges for me....I'm actually able to make whole progressions sound good. Very encouraging. Thanks.
Flood of old memories came back w/ pic of the Gulfport Casino....grew up there years n years ago .. some of the best music/musicians came out of that area ...so long ago....makes me yearn for that place & time & the hotties on that spa beach...except for the hangovers..that place was Al Capone's winter stomping grounds.
There's a nice painted mural of John Prine in Gulfport. You probably know that he had a house there. Have you ever been to the Jungle Prada area in St. Pete? The old restaurant by the water is said to have been a place where Al Capone would sneak in alcohol from boats during prohibition. Thanks for watching the lesson. :)
@@Damianblf What gets me...very few knew it but that was some of the last stomping grounds of Jack Kerouac "End of the Road" you could write a book about infamous outlaws, pirates and 60's/70's Rock n Rollers that wet their whistle there. And the Roaring 20's prohibition Era is a whole other story. Al Capone's house was a short boat ride from that pier. He kept the Cuban booze across the Bay and Buyers on Gulfport side.
Thanks for taking the time to put this up Damian. Always enjoy it. In fact today I've been working on a nice previous lesson of yours on Cliff Gallup whom I love. Cheers, Guy.
I realy 'suck' at playing rock n roll on gitar...but thanks to you! I'll slowly get it! And by slowly...I mean ...on a blues-tempo... LOL!!! Manny thanks from Belgium! :-)
Really enjoy Damien the jazz the rockabilly and the jump and swing. So much fun. Only problem is now I need to add a hollow body electric guitar to the five I have already. What’s the best bet for a good mid range price hollow body electric I won’t grow out of.
Maybe a Epiphone inspired ES-335 or a hollow body from the Gretsch Streamliner collection. The Gretsch Electromatics are fantastic as well. Thanks for watching. :)
Hi Damian I've loved rock and roll and rockabilly for many years but only recently started playing guitar and i love it,i struggle with the backing tracks because I'm not quite up to speed just yet but not giving up,can i practice with a metranome,if so at what tempo speed would suit a learner like👍👍
For the past few months I've moved to the other side of the back room. I'm now closer to my computer which I now use to record all my lesson performances on. The new spot gives me easy access to everything. I also put a giant cat tree for my cat in my old video spot lol. Thanks for watching the lesson & Keep on Rockin'
Just awesome dude! Great players are not always great teachers, you sir, are both. Loving it!
When I need a pick-me-up I jump over to Damian's channel! What a great guy!!
Thank you for watching and for the kind words. :)
