I really like Rick Smith' reference to "real trance, you know, Steve Reich". Underworld's direct connection to classical music minimalism has always been at the heart of my devotion to this group.

Remember getting really stoned and on the drive home we listed to this. We were driving along some water front in the hills of Scotland and dusk was falling when Tounge played. Everyone just sat in silence and listened. We all had a moment alone, but together. Great album.

Your art has kept me inspired my entire life."Underneath the Radar" was given to me by my uncle by accident, then "Change the Weather" was given for my 7th birthday, on purpose. "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" was one of my first cd's and I still have that copy although its too played out to read now. Dubnobass kept me alive several times, kept the gun on the table, kept me breathing. When you guys came to Toronto back in mid 2000 your show was a turning point in my life. Thank you so very very much for the chance to escape into your sound, to escape the noise in my mind. stay safe, keep breathing.

As I'm listening to them describe how they made mistakes in live sets I'm reminded of when I saw them in Chicago for the Second Toughest album and they had a big snafu. Sound completely cut out but they got right back into it without it even mattering. I thought it was fantastic! I loved it because it was real. You knew at that moment that they were actually performing and not miming to a recording. Absolutely one of the best live shows I've ever seen out of the many hundreds of concerts I've been to.

That’s funny, the same thing happened in Chicago for their 100 Days Off tour, everything dropped during Born Slippy except Karl’s mic so he just went acapella with the crowd clapping a beat until Rick dropped in, perfectly, like it had been planned. But of course it wasn’t planned, while Karl was riffing Rick was in the background holding his hands up, as if to say “WHAT THE ABSOLUTE !#@&?!?!” Just amazing though.
And then I went to Pontiac Michigan for their next show, which was flawless and had more than a few different songs dropped in. They cared enough to design each of those sets individually instead of just banging the same shit out. Consummate professionals.

Absolute legends of EDM. It’s very difficult to try and explain to a different generation just what a couple of geniuses these guys were, along with the likes of Slacker, because to many electronic music is “all the same”.
The work they put into these albums was that of an era where the production process was so slow, experimentation was a requirement and art was always a consideration. True pioneers l.

I fell asleep to that beautiful black and white CD in my diskman so many nights as a teen, then rode the bus to school listening to it the next day, then taught myself programming to it that evening. Now I'll walk, drive, run, work to Dark Train on repeat. It's like my brain's internal clock. Your sets have not stopped for me in that sense. My thoughts are still riding that sense of impulse, that sense of peace, hope, humor, that the future that I understood, that was possible despite everything is just over the next hill, hear it calling from beyond the horizon. All I can say is thank you. It was one of the few things that made me feel understood like a little bit of home from a place I'd never been or a time I could only imagine, and yet was real and me... I knew immediately it was me and that I knew what I was here to do. Each track is perfect and when I listen to it, I'm right back home with who I really am.

I love this album so much. The concert footage in this video is from a episode of Dutch tv show called "Lola Da Musica" it was taken in Leeds, England on 29 Mar. 1996.

The Refectory, University of Leeds, 16th March. My third Underworld concert and the place where I bought the dubnobass dj bag, which I to this day still use to carry my laptop to the office every single day.
I did not know there was footage from this concert. Do you know if it is available somewhere?

    • @lasoo8877

michael hedelain That's so awesome. Yes the concert at Leeds University was filmed for an episode of "Lola Da Musica" . I got it off the RTSR Tracker about 2 years, you have to first be a member of borndirty.org (underworld fan site) to get access. It's also available on torrent sites. There are several concerts shown in the video which I should have mentioned in my first post. The Leeds footage is all the bits where Karl is wearing the white shirt with the text "begging for it" printing on the front. The footage at 4:12 is also from Leeds and is in the episode stated above. I sent you a private message.

I love this album, but Second Toughest was the ONE for me. I saw them at Hollywood Bowl in 2006 or 2007 and it was magic. I’m a rocker and this band and DM are 2 of my faves and tops in electronic music IMHO. Cheers

Very interesting to see the original recordings, in particular. Quite befitting that this exact record is republished, it has moved peoples hearts long after its original release. My uncle would bring these obscure mixtapes he'd recorded off underground radio, and my mom would play them in the car whenever we went anywhere. Underworlds music have almost always been a big part of the soundtrack to my life, and is the single biggest influence in my own feeble attempts at making music.
The 5CD deluxe set is a true work of art, and it's very interesting to hear how experiments with different elements, make tracks you've known and loved for 20 years completely different. My Rez vinyl arrive tomorrow ^^

Still nothing really sounds like it. There's mystery, darkness, a bit sleazy. It may seem like a strange connection to make but it reminds me of some of Tom Waits records - it captures the different world that emerges when the night falls!
