Coach Kidd was also criticized for moving Giannis to point guard for a full season. Eventually he moved into the point forward role and won a championship doing so. Aaron Gordon was given a point forward role in Orlando, in an attempt to find a better fit for him with that squad. While he never was the starting point guard and ultimately wasn't very good as a point forward, the experience improved his versatility, helping make him the more well rounded player who the Nuggets needed for their championship. People harshly criticize Pop for this move, and they claim it's proof that he's washed up as a coach. But I think it's a genius move for the long run.
I like it, being able to experiment and develop his playmaking skills will just make him that much more valuable in the long run. They really aren't losing out on much doing this and if Sochan turns into an above-average playmaker because of it then he's either a good piece to keep for the future or has a higher value if they want to trade him for a star to pair with Wemby. Being allowed to make as many plays as you want can definitely make someone's basketball iq go up when it comes to knowing what is a bad pass and what is a good one plus being on a shitty Spurs team allows him to actually get reps doing passes he might've never been able to do otherwise.
Yea plus Sochan as a point guard is just an experiment so if it doesn’t really work out then they can for sure get a point guard via trade, offseason or draft
@@SixthManKC They will probably draft a PG anyway. The draft class is full of it, and they likely will have 2 Top-10 draft picks. The experiment just makes Sochan a better overall player to make him, long-term, a Forward able to move and handle the ball a little bit. Also forces every player on that team to move the ball and learn how to create shots for themselves and others. 3 birds one stone. Pop is playing chess and is just a few moves ahead, while everybody gets mad at meaningless regular season losses, missing the bigger picture (the next 15 years).
Alex Sarr might go number one or 2. While the draft class has many interesting Point Guards. But if they can get both, I'm sure they will. Problem with Sarr for Spurs is they have a similar style of play with Wemby, so there's some overlap and I don't know if that would be a problem, but taking BPA is often regarded as smart, so there is a good case for going Sarr if he confirms his season start. 2 French towers training together all year, I'm good with that. I'm French, so this is a win to me.
@@GuillaumeRx sarr doesnt play like wemby bro, sarr like to play on the inside more then wemby. He only shoot when needed unlike wemby, and defensively i think Sarr stays on interior way more then Wemby, as far as i can see it Wemby play more on perimeter more in compared to interior. I think Sarr will complement the Spurs team very nicely IMO, and be honest its really intresting to see double eiffel duo on the team, no?
As soon as I saw your first point of emphasis being the defensive potential, I had to stay tuned! Great analysis. Sochan is great at the point of attack defending the opposing team's primary option on most nights, and his strength off turnovers in the open court is very promising. Of course he has struggled in the half court sets on offense, learning a new position on the fly - that's to be expected, as you pointed out. If he continues to hone his skills, his floor is like Boris Diaw with a conditioning program ( no disrespect to Monsieur Diaw)...Good video - keep at it!
Exactly, thanks for tuning in. He won’t learn if he doesn’t do it on the floor and if he learns from his mistakes, then it’s gonna be a success in the long run
I don’t doubt that tanking could be an objective. But this is great for development of Jeremy too. And at the same time Victor gets to work. There’s not downside to it if they’re not going for a playoff push.
@@Ryan-ts9pithey don’t understand one of the reasons they grabbed Sochan is cuz he can play make and defend like a taller, longer, more athletic Draymond Green
Idc what anyone says, Sochan has that “young bull” energy. He was fan favorite and rising star last year and this larger than life star comes to town, taking his natural position. He’s also 20 and not super mature. I don’t think the two can grow together. Victor doesn’t care but I doubt Sochan lets it go
I am fan of Jeremy, saw him practicing as 14yo kid - this is long term preparation of future champions. The only problem I see in this team is not enough determination in defence...
Sochan is interesting because defensively and I personally think he is kinda their only option at the moment because he honestly their best passer at the moment honestly
I’m in an 8 team fantasy league this year, so unfortunately he doesn’t make the cut for rosterable players, but next year I’m taking him with my last pick. Betting on sochan to succeed!
I don’t think it’s succeeding it’s developing the players Sochan in my opinion is their best passer…and defensively is good he has a high basketball IQ too so I think it’s interesting because the raptors let Barnes play point some games
Sohan gets cooked by PG's... So not sure where the defensive pact is with that... Secondly his playmaking is awful... You don't have to play someone as a PG to increase their playmaking... Jokic didn't play PG to increase his playmaking
I think even Coach Pop knows he’s not that guy yet but he’s trying to see if he can keep improving since they’re a young team and realistically won’t be competing for a playoff spot this season anyway
Sochan is literally the worst point gaurd in the history of basketball by the numbers. Which makes sense because hes a power forward. Their offensive ratiny is nearly 118 with him off the floor and its near 103 with him on it. By far the worst in the league. They are hampering wembys development by not having a player who can get him the ball where hes most effective to take good shots. Yeah its obviously to tank but is it worth hindering your supposed best prospect since lebron. Idk man
Yeah it's worth it, because the whole team needs to develop not just wemby, and if sochan developers decent pg skills when he is moved back to sf/pf (when they draft or trade for a pg), he will be that much better. They want to compete for multiple championships with wemby, and they need to develop the whole team to get there, not just wemby.
Jeremy is not a good player. doesn’t scan the court cause he doesn’t look up while he dribbles. Also makes bad passes consistently from not being patient. I don’t see him as a point guard
@@SixthManKC Yea that’s not what the title of your video says smart guy. But yea continue to push this narrative that this bum is gonna good player when he can’t even dribble both his hands
Do you think Sochan has what it takes to be the one of the Spurs primary playmakers?
Maybe
Absolutely not.
No, not at all. It was a failed experiment. Hopefully it is over now. Jeremy doesn't have the handles for it.
just glad pop is losing that proves to me there is a god
If not, they will trade him :) so all good.

It is good for Him and the Spurs cause he's a defensive player so he knows how to break the defense if he's playing the point.

His defensive impact is a game changer for sure but yea besides Tre Jones he’s probably their second best passer even though he’s still learning
Tre jones can pass in ways Sochan will never make in his career. Osman, Mamukelashvili, and Collins are also better passers.
Amazing video and perfect analysis of the current situation 💯💯💯💯
Glad you think so!
