This is an excellent video. Choosing between N & G is almost a coin toss in terms of 1st year cost. It's what happens to those premiums in the future that's so important.
Am amazed at the lower prices for plan G than our area. Did change Insurance co as price went up quite a bit but now the "new" co. is raising rates in May by ~$17/mth. Recall agent had said the some of Ins.Co looked at the rate would be for whole year. Is there a cap on rate increases for supp. or drug plan insurance? The part D drug plan went up more than 3x's amount (4.60 > 18.60). I didnt change it ontime. Even SF is lower for G then our area. Am curious about the high deduct plans as thought it also applied to part B of Medicare but someone said it applies to A (hospitol), so seems a good deal I past on .
This year we have seen larger premium increases for almost all Medigap plans across the board, so unfortunately you are not alone. There is not technically a cap on how much a company can increase premiums, but the State Department of Insurance does have to approve the rate increases before they are implemented, so the insurance company does have to justify the premium increases. A high deductible Medigap plan could be good to consider based on pricing! The deductible does apply to both Part A and Part B services so that is correct.
@@GiardiniMedicare ,does that mean with plan GHD , that Medicare doesnt pay Dr or tests till after $2800 deductible or just that supp insu. doesnt till you pay the deduct. for part A and B (have never used part A yet).

Very good RUclips on the subject of "closed block" of business. Thanks for all the reference information. Is there any protection from the state insurance commission from preventing a insurance company closing then opening a medigap plan with the same name? Or do they change the name of the plan? Is there a list of insurance companies (per state) that have never done a close block of medigap plans (like State farm, USAA etc)?
They typically will change the name of the plan very slightly, but it is virtually invisible to consumers since their ID cards will still have the name of the parent insurance company on them. We have never found an easy to access list of the companies that have never closed a block of business (that number would be very small), but here is the link to the filings that companies submit to the state: www.serff.com/serff_filing_access.htm
I'm not aware of a limit for how often they can increase their rates, but most commonly, companies will increase their rates one time per year (combining the claims and age increase), while others increase it two times per year (separating the age and claims increase).

Will my medigap insurance premium payment change if I move to a different state after I enroll in Florida and move to Illinois? If the rate is lower in Illinois would my premium payment eventually lower.

Some will adjust the premiums based on the premiums in your new state, others will increase to an "out of state" premium rate, and some will just not change and keep the premiums from the state you moved from.

The deductible increases are based on the CPI-U, not the premium increases. high deductible G increases are often lower than G and N, but they are still subject to increasing due to claims and the opening and closing of books of business
Wow Cameron, Wow. I think you just answered my current question about uncharacteristic increases on our United American HDF plan. I now think UA closed this Block of Business! It's uncommon for United American to close blocks of business, so it's possible they just had a relatively large increase due to their claims (loss ratios). Either way, you can definitely look at the HDG with a different company and switch if it makes financial sense. For those who work beyond age 65 and use special enrollment to add Medigap plan at 68 or later, using Issue Age, does this create a penalty/higher premium for life?
No. There are no penalties associated with Medigap plans. The issue age premium would technically be a bit higher, but it’s still likely better to delay Medicare if it makes financial sense
I show two possible issue age Medigap Plan G options and one Plan N option in North Carolina. @@spirit4earth The issue age Plan N is Transamerica, but it is one of their plans that they only sell by calling them directly, so we aren't sure about the specific details. Currently in North Carolina, Aetna is having an 8% increase for their Plan G and 0% for their Plan N. AARP is having roughly a 12% increase for both Plan N and Plan G. This doesn't really mean a lot when it comes to a 5 year time span, but hopefully that helps a bit! Medigap plans have high increases across the board this year, so make sure to plan accordingly

I understand the insurance companies need to make a profit just as my company does. You said the increases are because of claims which is the same as car insurance since they have to make money. I know there are actuaries who study and look at statistical data for the risk assessment and cost ratio but in health care do they also factor in genetics of the family life span. I always thought that I would love to sell insurance that is not a actual product that I don't have to produce and meet deadlines and specifications. But in reality it is simply a business to make a profit and with cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, strokes and all the deadly viruses like corvid and rising medical cost I am sure its not easy. But I also wondered how insurance companies selling home and property insurance companies deal with and make a profit when so many natural disasters occur. I was paying way to much a month and never made a claim so I raised my deductible because I looked at the risk assessment. I'm going to be 65 in August so I have to sign up for this so I appreciate the information and explanation as I have two older brothers who tried to tell me which plan to chose which I don't think they fully understand all the facts. ..
Thanks for the perspective! I think for all lines of insurance, it tends to be pretty straightforward in the fact that if costs for insurance companies rise (claims) they just increase premiums to compensate. Companies may lose in the short term, but always win in the long run.

I have a Plan G which has edged up of course over the run. The biggest unknown is Part D: it went from 25 dollars in 2022 to $40 in 2023 and now $75 in 2924. That’s 150% in 2 years. I hate to be skeptical but I think they’re forcing us into Advantage.
There are many large changes coming to Part D coverage over the coming years, but make sure to shop your Part D coverage every year! There are plenty of plans much cheaper than $75/month that may be better if it fits your prescriptions. We have a different video for how to find a Part D plan using Medicare.gov
G just edged up for you? Mine just went up close to $25.00 a month in June, and then it will be over $30.00 a month increase with my new year in August. This is the highest increase I've seen for a year. My state just approves anything the company wants. I got my part D down this year by taking the cheapest plan. But the previous year I paid full price for all my prescriptions plus a hefty monthly premium. But I bet they will sock it to me next year. Yes, I agree. I think the whole point is to force us all into Advantage plans and neither political party is protecting us at all. Sanders is all talk and no action just to make himself look good. I am buying all these plans to be adequately insured in the future. But by the time I will truly need the supplement plan, I won't be able to afford it.

But when you move to Medicare, you need to make sure you do it during your special enrollment period to avoid a penalty.
28704. Issue-age, but there are nine here in NC.
I show two possible issue age Medigap Plan G options and one Plan N option in North Carolina. Here is the pricing I see for the possible issue age plans for a 65 year old in 28704:
Female Plan G:
Old Surety Life Insurance: $106.61/month
Transamerica: $143.84/month
Male Plan G:
Old Surety Life Insurance: $122.60/month
Transamerica: $157.72/month
Female Plan N:
$108.40/month
Male Plan N:
$118.86/month
@@GiardiniMedicare thank you! What is the Plan N 108.40/month company? The only issue-age I’ve found is Transamerica. I’m trying to find out whether Aetna or AARP are going to raise the premiums a whole lot over the next five years.

I assume Minnesota has a different name for G and N?
That's correct. Here is some additional information about the different Medigap plans available in Minnesota: mn.gov/commerce/insurance/health/basics/medicare/

What would my Medigap rate be for a 64 year old woman non smoking in 49253 zip code? So glad I found you!
Rates for those under age 65 are a little tricky, but in Michigan, a Medigap plan at age 65 would be roughly $500/month. However, for a 65-year-old female, non-smoker in that zip code, here are some rates for both Plan G and Plan N:
Plan G:
$105.83 /mo Ace Property And Casualty
$105.91 /mo American Home Life Insurance Company
$109.05 /mo American Benefit Life Insurance Company
$109.54 /mo Allstate Health Solutions
$110.38 /mo Humana Achieve
Plan N:
$77.11 /mo American Home Life Insurance Company
$79.67 /mo Ace Property And Casualty
$80.40 /mo Humana (Humana Insurance Company of Kentucky)
$80.80 /mo American Benefit Life Insurance Company
$82.98 /mo Federal Life Insurance Company

@@GiardiniMedicare Thank you! I went to the SERFF website and found the last rate memo listed for AFLAC. I am a little confused. It appears to me that AFLAC has only one open block of business, yet in the memo it states " Open or Closed Block: All policy forms have been withdrawn from sale." and "Marketing Method: These policy forms are no longer sold." What does this mean?
@@tims3338 Which state? I haven't seen that but would like to check it out

What doesn't increase with time? Fortunately Social Security is paying for it and it eeks up with time as well.
Yes that's the problem. SS eeeks up while Medicare screams (3% vs 10%).

Right now, your Medigap options are very limited in Indiana if you are under age 65, as far as I am aware. Currently, companies only have to offer Plan A, but starting in 2025, they will have to offer all plan letters, while charging no more than 200% of the premiums for someone who is age 65.
