What a great video Greg, and thanks for always covering the history and background of the store. I am glad to see Gilbert willing to continue the business.. Hawkering will only be viable in the future if it makes enough money to attract the younger generation to the trade. At $10 for noodles and bowl of ingredients, I feel it is perfectly fair. I find it hard to complain when I compared it to quick restaurant joints offering other sorts of "overseas" noodle dish. I urge Singaporeans to continue to support our local hawkers, especially the younger ones who are willing to try.
Hi Gregory This stall is ah Ter Teochew noodle. Food is not bad but when it's crowded during lunchtime. Food can be a wait and the noodle are slightly soft not al dante. Which I prefered. $6 for a portion at this economy is OK for office workers around the CBD area. There are plenty of Teochew fishballs noodle stalls were sightly cheaper at $5 per bowl. Usual toppings were the minced pork, pork balls, fishballs, sliced fish cake, pork lard, pork liver, 1 piece chinese lettuce.
I used to love love love the $5 bowl when it was the $4, $5, $6 price range. It was my go to Saturday morning breakfast as the I like the noodles dry and the ingredients kept warm separately in the wonderful soup. But with the $4, $6, $8, $10 range, I only tried the $6. And the new upscale prices shocked me. Thanks for trying the $10 bowl and breaking down the difference in ingredients for us viewers. I might indulge myself one day to the premium bowl soon.
For an office lunch, I would want something good but cheap because I don’t want too heavy nor have the time to savor / enjoy the food. The $6 version is a good balance of these things. The $10 is reasonable, with the 2 large prawns. Probably something I would order on an off day, if I was around that area.
I must be an old timer. I didn’t know teochew fish ball dish came with all the “ other stuff or goodies.” My uncle in law used to own a fish ball noodle store in, some where, Upper Thompson road. He closed the store not because business is slow or bad. He has reached the point of not able to obtain a particular type of fish for his fish paste. He could substitute, but he refused. That is the best best fish ball and fish cake I ever have.
Hello Greg! You should definitely try the teochew beef noodle stall at the same aisle, if I'm not wrong the stall number is #01-23 Been eating there for easily 15 years, and should deserve some coverage. They are an elderly couple, with old school authentic light and delicate beef soup. Thanks!
Hi Greg, I presumed the owners are Teochew too like me. My family operated a Hea Kiow fish ball stall mixed with wan tan mee and it became legendary in Malacca Jonker Street. We closed it down in the early 1990s and many former customers still hankered for it as it is very scrumptious and value for money. It used to cost 30 cents per bowl with added extras costing a bit more. Yes, love the Teochew fish ball noodles very much as it is a Teochew traits to make fish ball and also recently discovered that they are good at beef hot pot with the clear stock too.
I am sort of from Melaka and I have to say that the soy sauce mix that they put in the hee kiow noodles in Melaka is amazing and dont seem to be found here :(
It think it’s good value, better than Tai Hwa. Then again, some people are happy to pay over $10 for a bowl of ramen with two slices of char siew, so the ramen is acceptable? It’s all about the perspective
Traditional ramen soup is time consuming to make. Most fishball noodle soup are merely MSG flavoured water. Quantity wise, the noodles here is one handful, I think? That’s about 2/3 of a typical ramen serving. The char siew and eggs in ramen also quite time consuming. Here factory made fish ball and mince meat just needs to be blanched in hot water for a minute. Anyway, ramen lover here. I think it is superior in many ways to the humble fishball or minced meat noodles. Just my perspective.
@@munster1404 That is true but if you talking about commercial ramen like certain brands, the real cost is the rental not the food itself. Ramen is ramen, local bcm is bcm. It's not an apple to apple comparison. Ah Ter medium and large is obviously a deliberate upsell.

Hi Greg, you can get smth similar to the premium bowl at Amoy for $6.50 at Serangoon gardens market and food centre- Seng Kee BCM. try Kim Fa fish ball noodles in Tiong Bahru Market. The aunty has been doing it for many many many years since the old market's era. i can't promise you that it is very outstanding, but there's something that keeps me going back and i'm pretty sure it's not familiarity. i would think of it and it's my go-to when it comes to fish ball noodles. those who go to the market for noodles and whom are in the know, would go for Kim Fa =)

This looks like a great place for BCM but your title may hwve misled people esp those who didnt watch the videos and you did mention its worth tge money.
Would you pay premium price for chicken rice? What about mixed rice? These are all examples of favourite SG "hawker fares" which most people have set their own maximum price ceilings which they would be willing to spend on once a week or even several times a week. It is not like they are eating Vietnamese Pho or Thai Phad Thai, which usually everyone expects would cost more than the average Bak Chor Mee/Fishball Noodle. I stopped going to Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle once they introduced premium pricing, with the same queue. I'm a foodie too but that is just madness.
i think 亞豬translates to Ah Ter (his name) rather than asian ball 😂 many of the older folks have 'Ah X' names nd their chinese name are also '亞 X'. weird transliteration of 'Ah' if you were to ask me.
