Excellent modification and so simple, much easier than the other ones I have see. This will be done on my old tray, including the green wire mod, this weekend as my Ladda 2450's will arrive tomorrow. Many thanks and great a knowledge bank.
Love the content. I started as a no code tech ruining the hobby, and I love my FT 817. The Duracell rechargeable batteries fit into the tray without modification. My other rechargeable batteries do not. Thanks for the mod tip.
Thanks for the shout out! Can’t believe it’s that easy! Hope you didn’t order an extra tray just to do this video. Might do this anyway as it was definitely a tight fit to get the tray in first then add the Amazon batteries when I tried it. Will have to pick up another tray to have both trays, one modified, one original. 73
@@TheNoCodeTech Finally got around to doing this today. Just used a sharp thin knife to cut the tabs and bend them to break off! A file to take off the sharp bits remaining. Thanks again for the shout out! Rod VA3MZD
Yeah I did this too a long time ago, although I scored along each side by using an engineer's back marking gauge and flipped the whole central spine out. I reckon your way is a better method to achieve the same end. Then it dawned on me that I had created two rows of very low internal resistance cells separated by two thin layers of shrink wrap and the whole cell casings are positive. Later I found the radio cutting out which was down to the cells still resisting the springs after the occasional jolt. I tried using dry film lubricant on the shrink wrap, then I gave up and chalked it down to yet another Yaesu goof with these radios. One of those cells in the video has damaged shrink wrap at one end ...
Tell me , on page 8 of the manual for the 817 it says "The FBA-28 battery holder is designed for use solely with Alkaline type “AA” cells. Do not attempt to use Ni-Cd or other rechargeable cells in the FBA-28, because it does not contain the protection circuitry required when using rechargeable cells" so how come u can use rechargable batteries in it
I believe the manual states not to use rechargeables because the 817 doesn't contain the circuitry to properly recharge using the FBA-28. I do not use the 818 to recharge. I recharge in an EBL recharged. Thank you. :edit- spelling
Yes, I believe the green wire being connected prevents the radio from being able to charge HR6 batteries. Simply cutting or removing the green wire would allow the radios internal charge circuit to charge batteries in the tray. I do not wish to use the radios internal charge circuit, as I prefer to charge individual batteries outside of the radio. I keep the green wire in place as a means of preventing me from accidentally doing so. Thanks for watching.
Yes this mod continues to work. I do not advocate to cut green wire and charge batteries inside radio. Charge batteries in dedicated AA battery charger.
@@TheNoCodeTech After making that comment, I found another post that showed how to cut one wire so you can use rechargeable batteries. Very cool 😎 Now I can't find my bat tray! 🤦♀️
To save you time, clip out the centre rib. He gets to this 3/4 into the video.
Thank you!

Good video, brother. Informative and fun to watch. Just subscribed. Keep up the good work!

Hey thanks man, glad you like it. Really do need to get some of the Duracell ones. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching. No worries about picking up an extra tray.

Good idea but holder wiring need to be modified too to charge it in radio right?

thanks fantastic tips
Hey thanks for watching.
Has this mod still work for you? Some say to cut the green wire so the radio can charge the batteries.

Does that case say, USE ONLY WITH ALKALINE BATTERIES?
Hey thanks for watching!
Why yes, Yes it does.
