- A quick gimp 2.8 guide,
If you are using gimp 2.10 the free select tool does not automatically activate when you complete the selection.-- You will need to activate (start the marching ants) the selection, BEFORE you invert it. --- To activate it double click inside the selection, press your enter key, or click on another tool BEFORE you invert it.
That clearing away the stupid layer boundary was the best thing ever. Glad someone finally pointed that out
Well done, Terryow100, a masterclass on how to make an intelligible instruction video. Slow, clear and well thought out. When you compare this to the rushed speed-freaky, flying cursors of those, who in their eagerness to show their competence, end up incompetent. Taking that pause momentarily to allow your movement and intent to be followed is what makes this an excellent tutorial. Thank you, keep them coming.
That is so kind of you. I remember when I started learning gimp through you tube, and I vividly remember those flying cursers all to well. Thank you for taking the time to comment, Terry
I totally agree. This is the best beginner Gimp tutorial I've run across so far.
Best, simplest gimp video so far after years of watching videos. Kudos!
This is the best tutorial on superimposing/combining as its a nightmare to follow the Gimp instructions. I never thought I would understand it but your video has explained the process simply. Thank you!
I am glad it made sense.
I have been tearing my hair out, trying to do this, so thank you for your excellent clear tutorial! I will subscribe.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. Do remember that in Gimp 2.10 you need to activate the free select tool before you invert it
Thank you so much for such a short, sweet, clear, concise video tutorial. This video has been helping people all around the world for 6 years now!!! Amazing! Love from India...
Thank you so much for your kind words. I hope you enjoy gimp.
That was one of the best GIMP tutorials on RUclips, I actually understood most of it, unlike any other GIMP how to's!
That's so kind of you to say. I hope you enjoy learning and using gimp.
After watching many clips and writing endless notes I thank you for your clear understandable lesson
One of the Best GIMP videos I have ever \watched. Thank You!!
Brilliant tutorial, great pace, no annoying music, 1st class presentation.
That so very kind of you. I have just started trying to do
some new videos as gimp has updated so much since I did the original videos.
Hopefully they will help someone else and spread the gimp word.
EXCELLENT tutorial!! thank you very much!! perfect amount of detail, even with such things as the chain having to be together in the scale to make the image proportional when expanding. GREAT JOB
That's very kind of you to say. Thank you very much. I hope you enjoy using gimp.
Easy Peasy. Thanks for the unrushed narrative, clear instructions, and for not having your cursor flying all over the screen.
This is the best tutorial I had come across, very clear and easy to understand. Very good and I am looking forward to more of your tutorial, like how to blend two images together.
You are really amazing !!!! and I am really elated and thank you from the bottom of my heart.
That's very kind of you. I so am glad it still makes sense
Excellent explanation. Very clear and at a very reasonable speed. Other videos have individuals exceeding the speed limit of my brain and at times their own. Hope this individual produces more of the same!
That's so kind of you to say. I hope you enjoy using gimp.
It finally worked. I have GIMP 2.10.18 and the other tutorials did not match my version. This was clear and really helpful. Thank you!
I'm glad it made sense for you. In the latest gimp the tool box is compressed and looks different
You explained everything so clearly, very easy to understand. It worked exactly as You said. I want to Thank You.
That's very kind of you, Thank you, Terry
Great tutorial for me who is a complete beginner! Taught clearly and a pace I could follow. Thank you!
That's so kind of you. These are a little out of date now, so I am going to make some basic ones as gimp 2.10 has a few differences to gimp 2.8

GIMP made simple! It's a great tutorial. As with the signature brush tutorial, this video shows everything you need to know in order to produce a great result!
great video. i'm so used to the photoshop way of doing things. it's nice to have videos like these that make learning Gimp so much more enjoyable.
(Y) Wow I like the way you teach. You are teaching like a pro..! Thank you!
I am pretty sure that this will work in a later version, at least I hope so because I am using 2.14. I found your teaching style as effective as it could ever possibly be. Thanks a million and I look forward to other videos as I am really interested in getting really good with GIMP! -- Thanks again!!!
That's very kind of you to say. Yes it does work on later versions of gimp, but the interface may look a little different.
Thanks, this was a great tutorial! It's helped me do the first productive thing with Gimp, which is at the same time full of functionality and totally overwhelming in it's complexity!

@@raypearse3214I think you have accidently linked your layers.
Look in the layers panel.
Now for each layer, between the eye and the thumbnail image, there is a space
and if you click in that space you get a chain link.
If your layers show this chain link they will scale together.
If this is the problem, simply click on the chain links and they should disappear leaving a blank space, and unlinking the layers.
Let me know if this works
@@terryow100 Thank you for your very prompt reply, I discovered where I was going wrong despite many times going over your excellent video I had neglected to do one click which was into the picture I wanted to scale. I looked at the chains you spoke of and they are quite obvious when revealed so no I hadn't done that but nevertheless yet another piece of useful information, now I just have to work out how to get the finished picture independent of Gimp so I can use it so thank you once again terry for your help
@@raypearse3214 Hi Ray. I am so glad you worked it out.
To turn your project into a new jpg
click on file in the menu bar - click on Export or Export As
Name it and check it is a jpg and where it is going too
Then click on Export
Click on Export again
and there should be a new jpg created in the folder.
you will still have the gimp file and if you have finished with it, simply close gimp it and discard the changes.
But if you want to work on it again you can save it as a new .xcf (gimp) file.

Terry, very good video, and this is probably an easy one to answer. How do you save the two layers into one which becomes the final picture?
Hi. If you want to export to create a jpeg or png file, you do not have to merge the layers down, they automatically merged down in the jpeg or png. Let me know if this helps. Terry
I Watched this video several times and always got stuck at the part where she connects the starting point dot and then ending point dot when she uses the Free Hand tool. On her video when she clicks the first and last dots the person image immediately shows marching ants (dashes around the image) to indicate the focus is on person image and not the background image, but when I clicked the first and last dots I found I had to double click the person image and then it would outline the person image with marching ants. and then everything worked perfectly once I did that. I am thinking it may be that I am using a much newer Gimp version (2.10.8) than she was using when she mage the video. Hope this makes sense but if your having problems with that part of the process, this should help.
Hi Larry. You are correct that I was using an old version of gimp, so I have just installed the latest gimp. It still connects the dots as before. It is possible that you are not quite clicking on the first click spot. When you hover over it, it should turn yellow and then you are in the right place to click. But in all truth, if you are happy double clicking then why not. I hope you enjoy gimp. Terry100
I am unable to find where I can tick the current layer only box for the cropping part - please advise
You need to first click on the crop tool in the tool box, then the tool options underneath the tool box should be for the cropping tool. Current layer only should be the very first option. Let me know how you get on, Terry
Wait! My GIMP 2.8 doesn't have a layers panel on the right. How does one open this panel?
oops at some stage you must have closed it. It's a very common problem so this link should show you how to find it again and change your view to a single window so it doesn't happen again. ruclips.net/video/1dfaR8oiv7k/видео.html

Thank you, I hope you enjoy using gimp
@@terryow100 Yes, thank you, I was able to get my project done.
I just want to stitch two photos together for a before and after pic. Is it this complicated?
There are several ways
If you know the size of the photos you can create a larger blank
background layer before you open the photos. If you make the layer more than double the
width, and add a little to the height, you will be able to put a border around
the photos.
So for example if your photos are 4000 x 3000
Click on File in the Menu Bar
and on New
In the dialogue box make the width at least twice as wide plus
a little extra (around 9000).
Then make the height around 4000
Then open the photos as layers.
Move them on the background canvas and then crop it to
remove any unwanted canvas.
At the beginning of this video I open a new doc, but I stick
to the default settings.
ruclips.net/video/eWnXPbj7RzA/видео.html
Let me know how you get on, as there are other ways to do
it.
When I open first picture it shows me the whole picture. When I then add 2nd picture as layer it shows approx. 1/3 of picture. Usually middle section. I'd tried various things to correct this and nothing works. The first time I gave up and removed Gimp out of frustration. Decided to try again and reinstalled. Perfect. Then after 2 or 3 sessions it happens again. So now I just remove Gimp and re-install. Don't want to keep doing this. Can you help?
It could be that your photos are different sizes.
When you the first photo in gimp, it sets the size of the ‘canvas’,
or working area.
If you open gimp with a small photo, you will have a small ‘canvas’
then when you add a larger photo on top, it will over hang the ‘canvas’, and
you will only see the part of the photo which is within ‘canvas’.
To fix it if you open the small one first and the larger
second, you need to scale down the second photo.
Or- you can open the larger photo first, and then the
smaller one. You can then scale up the smaller one to suit.
This is the only explanation I can think of, please let me
know how you get on.
Terry
Thank you so much for replying and quickly. I've had this problem over and over again. Often with same two pictures. I'll open them and both will be full image. Then I "play around" with them, learning process, get tired, close gimp without saving my work. When I'm ready to continue my practice sessions I repeat as before and this time 2nd pictue shows middle third of the picture. I'm almost ready to give up. But I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks again.
Gosh, I don’t know the answer. When you open the first photo
it will usually look big, as gimp zooms it up to fit the image window.
To find out the size you need to read the size which is at
the end of the title (along the top.)
That first photo sets the size for the ‘canvas’ unless you
change it.
I hope this helps, but I am stumped. in the photo viewer I use I can hover over my photos and it will display the sizes
Terry
I do every step right, but when i go select and invert my whole picture deletes. I dont know whats the problem any tips? I need this for school.
Oops. this old you tube was done in gimp 2.8 and you are probably using gimp 2.10. In Gimp 2.8 the free select tool activated automatically, (started the marching ants), but I gimp 2.10 it doesn't.
After you create your selection, you need to double click inside it, press your enter key, or click on another tool BEFORE you invert it. That starts the marching ants.
I did a new selecting tool video and the second half shows how to activate the free select tool. ruclips.net/video/eWnXPbj7RzA/видео.html
I hope that this fixes the problem, but please let me know how you get on
Thank you very much i watched a video from the latest version of gimp and it helped me.
I am glad. I have just started trying to replace the old videos as the latest gimp does have a few changes.
When I combine the 2nd picture it is as large as the first. How to I overcome this
when you crop the top layer, make sure you click on current layer only in the options under the tool panel before you crop. Otherwise it will crop both layers. Hopefully this is what you mean, as it is a common problem
this is my same problem the Open as layer is a small can you make a lil video i don't get it
Hi Terry, for some reason, once I have clicked on invert and then delete on my keyboard (macbook, fn and backspace) both the background and the selected area disappear with just the perforated lines remaining. I have tried over and over again but no luck. I have downloaded the latest version (May 2019). Perhaps something has changed? Do you have any advice? Thanks very much. So much appreciated.
Felicity it is not your fault. In gimp 2.10 you sometimes need to activate the free select tool. Most times you would simply click on another tool as you do the project and wouldn't notice, but when you use menu or keyboard options you will need to activate it after you make the selection.
You do this by pressing the enter key on your keyboard, double clicking inside the selection or clicking on another tool. I've just started to do a couple more you tubes to help with this
This one is about the basics of the select tools

When cropping I start at point a by the time I have reached part way around the cropping tool decides to automaticly return to the beginning before I have time to complete the task. Any advice would be helpful.
Yes, you are possibly clicking too fast, and gimp is reading it as a double click, or the click points are too close together. Or your computer is very sensitive.
You might want to delete the background in smaller sections and as you get more experienced the problem will probably quietly disappear. Let me know how you get on.
@@terryow100 Many thanks for your quick response. I think you might be right with clicking too close to each other. I'll have another go later. Thanks again for your advice.

Sorry I can’t do a new video to help at the moment.
im following the directions but im having trouble in the part when we invert the photo im doing that but it keeps deleting what i dont want to delete
Are you sure you are inverting the selection? if so you have managed to select the outside so try not inverting. I sure hope this makes sense.
Thank you. After free select to make the edges softer I click around the person picture. I go to Select and invert. When I click delete on the keyboard and picture and the background all disappear. The main layer remains. What am I ding wrong. I had it right once but not a nymore.
Hi Krishna
I think you might not be actually finishing your selection
and getting the marching ants running.
You need to finish the selection by clicking back into the
first click spot (as you hover over the first click spot you should see a
yellow circle and this is where you click)
Or you can double click.
This will animate the selection (create the marching ants). Then to select the background instead, invert the selection
(click on Select and on Invert).
Be careful you don’t click on none, or you will lose the
selection. You only click on None after you have deleted the background.
I hope this helps, please let me know how you get on, Terry
@@terryow100 I have it working now. Joiningg the starting point with the finishing point is critical. I used the Path icon to do the cut outline. Thank you so much.
This is a difference between gimp 2.8 and 2.10. In gimp 2.8 the
area activated automatically, but in gimp 2.10 you need to activate it yourself.
In gimp 2.10 you can see the selected area isn’t activated (marching
ants) as the edge appears normal, when it is active the edge will appear to run (marching ants).
You can do this by completing your selection then pressing
your enter key, click on another tool,
or double click the centre in the
selection, before you try to invert it.
Let me know how you get on
Hi Terry. Sometimes I can't remove the background in a photo. Does jpg or png have anything to do with it?
Yes it makes a big difference. Pngs delete to transparent, but Jpgs do not automatically delete to transparent. Jpgs fill the deleted area with your background colour. To fix this, you right click on the layer in the layer panel, and left click on "add aloha channel". However if you want to save an image with transparent areas you can't save it as a jpg, because again the transparent areas will be filed in with your background colour. To save an image and keep any transparent areas you can save it as a png.
Okay thanks!
Thanks a lot
I hope you enjoy using gimp, Terry
good video, when open as a layer, some photos not fully opened. part of the photo is open. pl let me know how to fix this problem.
the photo you are opening as layers is probably a different size. Try opening the project with the largest image if you can, then when you add others you can see the large photo to scale it down to match
Very good video. How I can set up the canvas and the pictures to fit everything on size screen?
Hi Rod,
I’m not sure exactly what you mean, but hopefully this covers it.
If you your image is too small, look in the top right corner
of the image window you should see a magnifying glass icon click on this once
or twice it will zoom your image up to the largest size possible to fit in the
image window.
If your image is too big or small you can place your curser
over the percentage number along the bottom of the image window (this is the
zoom percentage) you can either click on the drop down arrow and select a
specific percentage or you can place your curser over the numbers and use the
roller to adjust the zoom percentage up or down.
However if you ONLY want to see the image on your screen
click on WINDOWS in the MENU bar
and click on HIDE DOCKS, to check the box. You may still need to zoom it up a
bit
To reshow the docks
click on WINDOWS in the MENU bar again,
and click on HIDE DOCKS again to uncheck it.Please let me know how you get on,
Terry
@@terryow100 I mean for example, I would like to create a tattoo design with one photo and two images. I know the photo is big in pixels. So how I can do before I put all images together. Like set up canvas and lager and not loose quality. I want to print a design and is for my arms. I think from my shoulder to my elbow is like 12 inches x 5 or 6 inches wide. Any advice?
Do you mean you want to make a larger canvas than your photo,
so that you can arrange other images on it too?
You could simply open a huge canvas to crop later
To open a new canvas
Click on File in the menu bar
click on new and change the
width and height to suit
(Eg. If your photo’s 4000 x3500 you could try
8000 x 7000 (this is a huge canvas))
then using the OPEN AS LAYERS, add the photo and images as separate
layers, then crop the canvas down to
suit when you have finished placing the images.
You would need to make sure the finished size is the same
aspect ratio that it can be printed to the exact size you want

Can I ask you a question about changing the color of a object?
try this www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dpZ0m 2cuc
Would you happen to have a video on how to combine two smaller images into a larger one?
I scanned a map but it was too big to fit on one page. I'm wanting to combine the two images, assuming that is possible.
Thanks for your help and for this video, which gave me some tricks I had not been aware of. I have used Photoshop Elements in the past and am trying to figure out how to use Gimp. They do things a little bit differently & I had mostly learned things via trial & error. It is helpful to see how other people do things, especially when there are tips and tricks I was not aware of.
Great idea. As soon as I get this new laptop set up I’ll
give it a go, but in the meantime I hope this helps.
Probably the easiest solution is to create a large canvas
first.
Find out the dimensions of the photos and create the canvas
so it is bigger than both photos together in the direction you want, (by that I
mean the width if you want to put then side by side, or the height if you want
them one above the other)
To create a new blank canvas
click on FILE in the menu bar
click on
Then open the photos as layers, and move them to where you
want.
Finally click on the canvas layer in the layer panel
(probably called background)
click on the crop tool in your tool box and crop the canvas to suit.
Now export it as a new JPG
When you export with a blank canvas as your first layer gimp
will default differently. Usually gimp will send it as a PNG file to your
documents. You might want to change it to a JPG and check where you want it to
go.
Near the start of this old video I show you how to open and
export a canvas which might help. ruclips.net/video/mD7k0COhYFc/видео.html

Thank you so much Terry for taking the time to give those instructions. I love how caring people can be in helping others like this. That attitude seems to be especially prevalent for open source projects but I see it quite a bit on youtube for all kinds of things.
That was the ideal for the internet when it first came out, and it is a great thing to see as an antidote to all of the bad things we see going on in the world.
Unfortunately, I have some family & work obligations for the near term, but hope to try it again later tomorrow or Sunday if I can. It's always great to learn something new & this will help out a group that needs this.
I tried experimenting with it and enlarged the picture, perhaps resizing it, I don't remember, but it wouldn't let me move the layers around like I had hoped. I think I must not have enlarged the canvas itself.
Thanks again for the help. It is much appreciated.
You are so right about open source. Some of us enjoy
learning or creating and passing it on. You can learn so much from the internet.
Yes, you probably just need a bigger canvas.
Watch the start of the other video, but this video might
help too. ruclips.net/video/-Bi-TlS4SMM/видео.html
Unless your images are extremely large I wouldn’t scale them
down though (as shown in the video). Computers can easily save much bigger
files now.
Cheers, Terry
