Thanks everyone, for the comments. It's interesting to read through everyone's creative process. Like a lot of you, my best ideas come when I'm focused on something else. For me, it's running. I think the increased blood flow to the brain helps.
I love spending my free time just thinking and whenever I think of an idea i'll type it down on my electronic device in notes so whenever I do a video I have it. here are some of my ideas, if you think there stupid just keep scrolling. 1. Snap to the beat of the song and keep appearing in different outfits 2. "come out of the shower with a towel (wear clothes underneath) and drop towel into some nice outfit or something 3.blow sparkles into the camera 4. continue dance leaps in different places 5. come up with a dance routine 6. in sink dance routines 7. have someone record you while riding your bike or something. these are a few :-)
If its for a music video. I listen to the song over and over and over and picture it in my mind :)
I agree, but it's important to recognize both approaches, so you can get yourself out of a creative rut, if you're in one.
Everyday things give me inspiration to make videos. Usually if the idea sticks enough, i elaborate on it and we usually begin thinking about how to film. What kind angles, the setting, stunts, etc...and it usually develops from there. Lots of our planning for a shot is done right before we even shoot the scene. gives us a chance to tweak and see how we can make it better. Might seem off, and there is a lot more we can improve on. but its been working for us.
Griffin you've made a good point about getting too creative and then not being able to continue the project because its either as you say too expensive or you just don't have the resources. When eve i work on my projects i always write a film or a short piece knowing full well that i have access to those locations, have reliable people to count on and plan within my budget. I think this is something that a lot of people overlook and should look into it more to avoid disappointment.
I find the ideas usually hit you when you're not focusing solely on trying to think of one. You can be doing something else, with the knowledge that you need to think of a concept just lingering in the back of your mind (much like Dave driving his car), and a random thought, sight, overheard phrase etc can just cause a chain reaction of ideas!
In the video, Dave is using Final Cut Pro 7 (FCP7). I (Griffin) use FCPX.
I get my ideas whether it be listening to a song, playing a game or just walking down the street and I always say to myself, I'll keep this in mind or write it down for future projects and stuff to build off of"
thanks for the video.
eveybody is telling you how tomake videos but nobody tells you how to come up with ideas! wish there was more of this!
My approach to the creative process is fairly simple: I put on music and do chores. The best ideas (for me) tend to come with menial labor. An idea usually hits. I tend to see the end result by the end of whatever task and then begin figuring out ways to achieve that.
I liked this video because I love LOVE David Lynch!!!! he also got me into Transcendental Meditation!
My process is actually pretty unique I think. First I have a list of general ideas that I add to whenever or wherever I think of them. I pick and idea from that list, and begin tapping into my resources to plan the video. I think of possible locations to shoot, and I may even have to search for a new one. After that, I can do some kind of story design. Depending on the video, this varies between written summaries, scripts, storyboards, or shot lists. Then I find actors, and finally shoot it!
My friends and I are in high school and hang out a lot. We all make videos together and come up with a new idea probably 3 times a week! (good ones too) Most of them start out as jokes or stories that we like. I like to make comic strips of the funniest ones. I put all of my comics and ideas that I have wrote down in an idea box. Most of our recent videos have actually come from that box!
The voice in the 4-second intro clip? It's the same voice it's always been.
Wow, that really helped me a lot, thanks! I take my inspiration from everywhere, like strangers in the train and, maybe the most important one, other people's photography.
If I have to come up with an idea for a music video I normally see the video as I listen to the song, not sure why just can. So I write it all down. Original ideas just hit me like that. The only problem I have is I get really excited about the video for about a day and then go into a depresion about it 'no one will want to see it' 'it will be crap' kind of thing, so I have good ideas but I stop myself from doing it. That is why I hate myself sometimes. And this is a very helpful video thanks
Great info & advice, thanks!!!!!
damn iv been stuck on getting a good idea, this actually help.... A LOT !! lol now im ready to start on 5 music videos i have to do to this ppl, and NOW i know how ! thanx Dave Seger
I really appreciate this kind of input. I may never do much more than make videos for my "Askjerry" page... but it is great to get an inside scoop on the process. It will help me to make a better video... even if for my own enjoyment. So once again... THANKS!
I actually just started making music videos. What I do is I listen to the song, try to find a few possibility's of the songs meaning and I pick one, add a creative story line so it's not boring and just go from there.
i actually believe in trying to come up with an idea regardless of what you can or can't do. i know people who have written parts in scripts that they thought were impossible. but than someone in the crew came up with some original idea to solve it
Boring? WHAT!?!?! This is educational. I learned a lot! Though a lot of it I some what knew, except those casting websites. Awesome!
Don't normally like awesome directors project, buuuut... This guy is great though, really breaks down his work flow. Nice work.
I think you've done what you can with Backyard FX (yes, I would love to see them again), but I realize there's only so far you can go with a particular format before it gets dull, worn out, too expensive, too time-consuming, or just not fun anymore. Also, life has a way of catching up with you and I'm sure you didn't intend BFX to go forever...sooo, what I'm trying to say is, "nice video." I found it informative and entertaining. I'm working on a web video right now and I'm using your technique.
Dave you are so clever! Griffin, keep up the great work!
Personally, I find that a tight deadlines and limited resources are the best ingredients for creativity.
INCREDIBLY HELPFUL!!
I try to see what's available within my reach and make ideas out of that.
Exactly. I thank you guys for this Video.
nice video, fascinating ideas which give me a lot to mull over
listen to the lyrics and close my eyes and in my mind i see whats going on
hellz yeah! I'm the same :)
A very useful video, it was good to see how all of your tips are actually things I do, which must be a good thing right? I am currently planning a short short film, I listen to soundtracks for films that are similar, and gain inspiration from them. I watch films that are similar, and get ideas for cinematography. I even do the 'casting' before I even have the idea, so I can base my ideas on what will be available with the certain actors (friends) and I sort of expand ideas from there

My process starts with the end result and I just try to figure out how to get there. Years ago, when I did my first video, I saw the end result before I knew how to edit video. I even shot all the footage before I knew how I was going to edit it. It just kept working toward the end result.
I digg it...great stuff your puttin' up Griffin
I do exactly that, well minus the finalcut color coordinating. I write my text down by, intro/verse/chores/bridge and so on.
I think the hardest process is interpretation. I do come up with specific ideas but it can be a challenge to write that action down the way it played out in my brain.
i use sony vegas pro to creat my music videos
i'm personally one of those people that just wants to tell an amazing story if theres somthing that will not work I MAKE IT WORK i rewrite touch up and find new ways to shoot and edit to bring my vision to life the only problem is i love writting but i'm super lazy i've been working on a comic script for 2 years and it's not even close to being done however i have the basic story laid out
THE beard is back
PRODUCTION VALUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I put on my cowboy hat and my mother's high heels. Then I get on my push scooter and ride in circles in my garage while listening to Kay Kyser's "Jingle Jangle Jingle"...
Ideas actually come fast.
when I looking for inspiration I listen to the song and mute the tv and flip around for a minuet or two tern it off and draw for a wile letting my ideas build, ask the band if they want to be in the movie get there point of view. set my idea up with planing seen by seen

If you're into film making, this isn't boring at all. And if you're not into film making, why are you subscribed to a channel about film making? Lol
make a indymogul minecraft called fillm craft and make a fillm called the Academy awards
I wont a bfx again :=(
GENERALLY most great ideas come from "bottom barrel" producers who have to be extra creative conceptually because of budget restrictions.. and if luckily a small time producer is "recognized" ideas are often stolen by producers with larger budgets and larger networking capabilities.. (( my 2 cents ))
The downside is when you're not high, those same ideas are usually terrible.
go for a walk
first..... awwwww....
ok
thumbs up if you breath air
First?
i will get incredible ideas from every second of life just by smoking pot
yea well that's okay I just get tied of seeing updates and don;t watch it. But really you have to ask yourself, who is the larger idiot, me, or the guy who reads my comment, and then starts feeding the troll? Really if you ignored my post we would be fine.
griffin you should change your background music, it sucks
BFX is dead, this show is about teaching your production skills to make better looking films. Not just making half-assed effects in your backyard.
